Phones / Oppo Reno 3 To Abandon Unique Pop-up Camera by beejayvince(m): 12:27am On Dec 10, 2019
The Oppo Reno 3 and 3 Pro are next in line in the Oppo Reno series. The Reno Series is known for its unique pop-up ‘shark-fin’ camera. However, this unique design is set to be abandoned on the Oppo Reno 3 and Reno 3 Pro.

This is indicated in new images posted on Oppo’s Chinese website. The Company’s Vice President, Brian Shen posted a teaser picture last month on Twitter showing the front of the device. Today, he uploaded a short teaser video showing the rear of the device.

Not much is known about the Oppo Reno 3. The details confirm include the use of a Snapdragon 765 Chipset, a 5G variant and the design of the device. The images show that the screen curves around the edges of the phone. The thickness of the device is 7.7mm. From the images, we can also see that the device should have four rear cameras at the top left corner.

There is no information available on the launch date at the moment.

Phones / Samsung Considering Using Mediatek 5G Chips by beejayvince(m): 11:55pm On Dec 09, 2019
Samsung is looking at joining the likes of Oppo, Xiaomi and Vivo in partnering MediaTek in the use of its 5G chips for their devices. The high-end Dimensity 1000, MediaTek’s recently unveiled 5G chip might appear the way for Samsung to go since the company is looking at outsourcing manufacturing for its devices except for the high-end ones.

This means competition for Qualcomm who have been the leading SoC manufacturer for years. MediaTek’s 5G solution could appear on the Samsung Mid-range devices such as the A series starting from next year.

As 5G is an emerging technology across the globe, it is expensive and still improving. The MediaTek 5G chips could be the key to affordable 5G devices and ultimately, the rapid development of the 5G technology.

MediaTek is also looking at two other budget-friendly 5G chips, the MT6885 and MT6873 which will make 5G devices less expensive.

Phones / China’s 5G Is Technically Not Ahead Of The US – Qualcomm CEO by beejayvince(m): 7:09am On Dec 02, 2019
China has been in the news a lot in the past couple of months for talks relating to 5G technology. No doubt the country is moving fast in this regard. In fact, Xiaomi has disclosed that all of its 2020 phones over $285 will support 5G. Xiaomi

However, there is still the question of which country is ahead in terms of 5G – China or the United States?

Qualcomm already announced that the fourth Snapdragon Technology Summit would hold from December 3 – 5 in Hawaii. The invitation suggests that the key point of the event would be 5G.

Now, in a recent interview with Bloomberg, Qualcomm CEO, Steve Molenkov, was asked: “Do you think China is ahead of the US, in terms of 5G?” This was his response:

"Well, I would say not from the technology perspective but if you look at the deployment, the speed at which base stations are rolling out, China is actually going quick fast. I think I made some comments about how it’s gonna be 130,000 base stations by the end of the year and a million next year in China alone. Those are tremendously large numbers if you put it in comparison with what you see in the United States. But that doesn’t mean the United States isn’t going quickly as well. It’s just that for the first time, China and the US are launching in the same calendar year. They used to be separated by two years or five years, depending on the generation."

This goes to show that Qualcomm CEO does not believe that China’s 5G is technically ahead of the US. Meanwhile, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 may launch this December with both 4G and 5G versions.

Phones / Samsung Galaxy A11, A31, And A41 To Come With 64gb Base Storage by beejayvince(m): 5:57pm On Nov 29, 2019
2019 has been a good year for the Samsung Galaxy A series. Samsung came up with the budget and mid-range phones to face the competition from Chinese rivals such as Oppo, Vivo, and Xiaomi. Just this year, we saw phones ranging from the Samsung Galaxy A10 to the Samsung Galaxy A90. Among these was the Galaxy A20s.

Even while looking forward to 2020, Samsung is already working on some devices to refresh the series. In fact, the company is ready to bring the Galaxy A51 in December. We have already seen the device in leaked renders. We expect it to come with a 5MP Macro Camera. Some other devices we are looking forward to are the Samsung Galaxy A11, A31, and A41. There is also the Galaxy A71. The Samsung Galaxy A11, A31, and A41 will come with model numbers SM-A115X, SM-A315X, and SM-A415X respectively.

There was an earlier report that suggested that the Galaxy A11 would come with 32GB storage. However, new information suggests otherwise. The base variants of most 2020 A series phones will have 64GB base storage. Some will even come with as much as 128GB storage. The Samsung Galaxy A10 and A30 both launched with 32GB of storage. So, the 64GB storage is a welcome development.

After Samsung launches the Galaxy A51 in December, the others will likely follow in the first half of 2020.

Science/Technology / Facebook For Android Finally Gets Dark Mode by beejayvince(m): 9:10pm On Nov 25, 2019
The Facebook app for Android now has a dark mode. Already, a number of users of the app have been able to switch to the dark mode. This may however only be a test rollout for now.

Facebook is reportedly currently offering the feature to some Android users. There have been testimonials on Twitter, Reddit, and other platforms, that show that some Facebook app users already have access to the dark mode. Testimonials are available especially from India, Malaysia, and Italy.

Already, some of the other applications of the Facebook brand have gotten dark modes. We see it on Instagram and Facebook Messenger. Now, Facebook has it. WhatsApp’s dark mode is still in development.

It is possible that this rollout is only a small-scale test for now. Facebook is probably only testing what the outcome of a global deployment would be.

A while ago, Manchun Wong located some traces of a dark mode in the code for the Facebook Android app. Later, Facebook introduced the dark mode to the platform’s desktop version. At the moment though, Facebook has not announced when this feature will be available for all Android users.

Phones / Nokia 9.1 Pureview To Launch In 2020 With Snapdragon 855+ Chipset by beejayvince(m): 2:52pm On Nov 25, 2019
Nokia is back in the game of smartphones with many of its new releases. The Nokia 9.1 PureView has been on the news a lot lately. Nokia started working on this sequel a few months after the launch of the original penta-camera smartphone.
The new Nokia 9.1 PureView was supposed to launch this year. However, the launch will now take place next year.

Nokia started working on the original Nokia 9 PureView back in 2018. One of the main highlights of the device was its penta-camera setup. It came sporting 5 Zeiss camera lenses. The device launched with the Snapdragon 845, 2018’s flagship chipset. However, the Nokia 9 PureView eventually only launched earlier this year. This means it launched with an outdated chipset, as other devices were already running on Snapdragon 855.

Now, it appears that the Nokia 9.1 PureView will launch next year with the Snapdragon 855 or Snapdragon 855+. At that time, many phones will already likely be working with the Snapdragon 865 SoC. The Snapdragon 865 chipset will launch in December.

HMD Global has disclosed that the next handset will use Carl Zeiss powered cameras. However, the penta-camera setup will not be unique to Nokia by 2020.

Phones / Visionox Unveils Rollable AMOLED Display And Foldable Clamshell Phone by beejayvince(m): 8:31pm On Nov 24, 2019
This year has definitely been a year of foldable phones. We have seen the Samsung Galaxy Fold, the Huawei Mate X and the Motorola razr. All three device have their own peculiarities.

We expect that by next year, more phones will join the foldable smartphone train. However, even as we wait for these to unfold, Visionox has brought us something interesting.

Visionox Rollable AMOLED Display
According to Visionox, rollable AMOLED displays will be the next big thing. In fact, the company has showcased a rollable flexible AMOLED panel. Visionox unveiled this at the World Conference in the Display Industry which held in Hefei, Anhui Province of China.

Visionox claims that the rollable display will reduce the area taken up by the display. This technology may be an upgrade to the current foldable phone technology.

The rollable display that Visionox unveiled has a dynamic curl radius of 7mm. It comes with pretty interesting features such as an on-cell display integration technology, and self-lamination.

It may take a while before such features become commercially viable. So, Visionox simply showcased the display itself and not a smartphone featuring the technology.

Visionox Foldable Smartphone
Visionox still left us with something that can be ready soon. The company also unveiled a foldable smartphone with clamshell design, just like the Motorola razr. The device looks like a standard modern smartphone that can fold in the center. However, when folded, it does not have a secondary display like the razr.

Visionox’s foldable smartphone features a 6.47-inch flexible AMOLED display with on-cell technology. Interestingly, the device has a traditional notch at the top. Visionox says that there’ll be no crease at the center of the phone when it is folded into its 13.3mm form factor.

All of these point to Visionox positioning itself as a major player in the display segment. Already, the company is supplying displays for Xiaomi’s Mi Note 10.

Phones / Samsung Galaxy A81 Might Have S-pen Stylus Support by beejayvince(m): 8:41pm On Nov 23, 2019
There are reports that Samsung is set to release a new Galaxy A smartphone with S-Pen stylus support. The Galaxy A81 is supposedly the smartphone that will use the S-Pen stylus. The Galaxy A81 will be the first smartphone (aside from the Galaxy Note series) to have S-Pen Stylus, if the rumor is true.

Typically, the Samsung Galaxy Note series have model number with the format SM-Nxxxx, while the Galaxy A series has the number in form of SM-Axxxx. Meanwhile, a new smartphone with the distinct SM-AN815F model number has surfaced online. This smartphone has a model number different from the usual Samsung model numbers.

It’s likely that the SM-AN815F might be the Samsung Galaxy A81 with S-Pen Stylus feature. The N in the model number could be the indication of it having S-Pen Stylus support. However, there is no further information regarding the software of the Galaxy A81, since it is still in its development stage.

It would be interesting to see what plans Samsung has for the Galaxy A81 design-wise and in the Camera department, if there will be notable changes from its earlier Galaxy A devices.

Phones / OPPO Is Working On Its Own Mobile Chipset, The OPPO M1 by beejayvince(m): 6:55pm On Nov 22, 2019
OPPO is not a newcomer in the world of smartphones. In fact, the brand is winding its way to becoming one of the most popular in the world.

Back in April, OPPO introduced the Reno series. We got the Reno 2 series in August. Already, the OPPO Reno 3 series is set to launch in December with 5G support.

OPPO is now taking things a step further by developing its own mobile processor. This processor is called the OPPO M1.

OPPO Mobile filed a trademark application at the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) on November 20. According to the description of the filing, the trademark is for or related to a mobile processor.

With this, OPPO will position itself in the league of Apple, Samsung, Huawei, and Xiaomi. All of these companies have their own mobile chipsets. According to reports, OPPO has poached several Engineers from MediaTek and Unisoc to achieve this feat.

While we do not yet have details of the specifications of the OPPO M1, there are speculations of when OPPO may reveal the chipset. The company may choose to announce it at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2020. If not then, then maybe at Semicon China 2020 which will take place in March. It may also launch later next year.

An unnamed Xiaomi phone has just passed through 3C certification. Even though the listing does not state the name of the device, we believe it is a Redmi K30 series device.

Xiaomi founder and CEO, Lei Jun, earlier said that we would get the Redmi K30 smartphone this December. He disclosed this during the Xiaomi Developers Conference.

Phones / Android 10 Update Causing Wi-fi Issues On Pixel 2 Devices by beejayvince(m): 7:33pm On Nov 21, 2019
With big Android updates, we have seen phone owners complain about various issues. The latest now comes from the Android 10 update for Pixel 2 devices.

The full Android 10 update has been available for the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 devices for a while. However, there is information suggesting that the update has caused some issues. One of these issues is that the update has broken Wi-Fi functionality for some people.

As seen on an in-depth Google Support thread, many users have dropped complaints. Many of the complaints center around Wi-Fi no longer working properly after the update to Android 10 on their Pixel 2 devices.

Some people say that they are unable to connect to Wi-Fi consistently. Some others complain that they are able to connect to Wi-Fi but do not get internet access. In fact, it appears that there are issues with Bluetooth too.

The only solution for many users has been a factory reset and downgrade to Android Pie. But even this does not guarantee a fix to the issue. Google has also sent out replacements running Pie to some people who do not have the means to restore and downgrade to Pie.

Google has not yet officially responded to the complaints.

Phones / Xiaomi Working On 'clamshell' Foldable Phone Design; Competition For The Razr? by beejayvince(m): 9:58pm On Nov 19, 2019
The Motorola razr 2019 foldable fone is currently the talk of the town in the smartphone world. After months of hype surrounding the device, Motorola made it official last week. The Motorola razr 2019 has a sleek design but specifications that are quite underwhelming.

We recently reported that the razr may be rivaled by Samsung and Huawei. However, it appears that Xiaomi may also be in this competition. New reports suggest that Xiaomi is also working on a device with the clamshell design.

Xiaomi has gotten a patent for a vertical clamshell folding phone with two front cameras. Popular leaksters Tiger Mobiles revealed this while providing a look at the device. According to Tiger Mobiles, Xiaomi’s clamshell foldable phone will come with two front-facing cameras.

It appears that Xiaomi’s design also has a hinge in the centre-back of the screen. This is similar to what we see in the Motorola razr. There is also what looks like a dual-camera setup on the rear. When unfolded, the device has a top bezel that houses what appears to be a dual front camera setup.

Earlier this year, Xiaomi teased a phone that folded twice. The device transitioned from a tablet into a smartphone with a wraparound screen. So, this is not the first time we are seeing a Xiaomi folding phone concept.

Only time will tell if Xiaomi will release either phone. But the concepts definitely show that the Motorola razr may be in for some serious competition.

Phones / Samsung Galaxy S8 May Get Android 10 Update Soon by beejayvince(m): 6:57pm On Nov 19, 2019
The Samsung Galaxy S8 may be getting the Android 10 update very soon. The company’s customer care reps have raised hopes that the device may get a third major Android OS update.

A disgruntled Galaxy S8 user reached out to Samsung, asking why their phone was not getting the Android 10 update. In response, a customer care rep told the user that the device had a planned Android 10 update.

This is not the first time a Samsung customer care rep has said something like this. Apparently, they said something similar about the Galaxy S6 getting Oreo sometime last year. This will probably make it hard for S8 owners to believe the words until they actually get the update.

Samsung has been known to provide its devices with only two big Android updates, especially flagship devices. This makes it more unbelievable that the Galaxy S8 will actually get the Android 10 update. It is only a matter of time before we find out.

Phones / Xiaomi’s 100W Fast Charging Ready; To Charge 4,000mah In 17 Minutes by beejayvince(m): 6:48pm On Nov 19, 2019
Oppo Reno Ace, with its 65W charging power, is the current fastest charging smartphone. That might change soon, as Xiaomi are working on a 100W Charging power technology, which is called the “Super Charge Turbo”.

Information about this fast charging system developed by Xiaomi was shared earlier this year when through a Video on YouTube. Now, we have more insights into the 100W fast charging system, via a promotional image on Weibo. This fast charging feature will be able to charge 4000 mAh in just 17 minute. This charging speed should be achieved using the right smartphone with the appropriate charger. Interestingly, the “Super Charge Turbo” is faster than the charging system of many laptops.

While Xiaomi appears to be ready to market this new feature, it remains unknown the smartphone that will receive this feature first.

Phones / Data Shows 10 Million Iphones Shipped To China In September And October by beejayvince(m): 8:09am On Nov 19, 2019
The iPhone 11 has been a success so far for Apple in terms of sales figures. Bloomberg data puts a figure of 10 million iPhones sold between September and October in China. This is an increase of iPhone shipments by 6% from last year, according to China Institute of Information and Communications (CIIC).

These figures indicate that the latest iPhone (iPhone 11 series) is more popular in sales than its predecessor at the moment. This is particularly encouraging for Apple, having lost market share to the likes of Samsung and Chinese brands, Huawei and Xiaomi, whose devices are less expensive, and have good design and specs.

It is not entirely coincidental that during the same period that iPhones sold 10 million units, overall Chinese smartphone shipments dropped by 5% (according to CIIC data).

Apple’s Chief Executive Officer, Tim Cook, said New Pricing, trade-in policies and monthly payment program have improved iPhone sales in the Chinese market.

Phones / Redmi Note 8 Pro Will Not Have A Snapdragon-powered Variant by beejayvince(m): 9:39pm On Nov 18, 2019
Xiaomi released the Redmi Note 8 Pro a couple of months ago. The Chinese tech giant released the device with the gaming-centric Helio G90T chipset.

Over time, rumors started springing up that the company would release a Snapdragon version of the device. However, Lu Weibing, the General Manager of the Redmi brand, has put the rumors to rest. This means that there will be no Snapdragon-powered variant of the Redmi Note 8 Pro.

Weibing disclosed this in response to a post on Weibo. A user posted, “I heard that Redmi Note 8 Pro has a Snapdragon version, Snapdragon 730G, 27W fast charge, and an on-screen fingerprint sensor”. In response to this, Weibing said “No.”

Earlier this month, a new Xiaomi model, M1912G7BE, passed the 3C certification. The certification shows the device coming with the same charger as the Xiaomi Mi 9 and supporting 27W fast charge. There have been rumors that this device belongs to the Redmi series. However, Xiaomi has not confirmed this.

Meanwhile, Xiaomi’s CEO, Lei Jun, earlier said that the company would release more than ten 5G smartphones next year. Just last week, he also disclosed that all of Xiaomi’s 2020 smartphones above 2,000 Yuan (about $285) would support 5G.
