PoliticsRe: 85% Of Diasporean Nigerians Are Crooks by bidemi12(m): 12:29pm On Oct 27, 2010
I pray to God that one day Nigerians will open their eyes to the true damage our leaders have done to the country. It is not stolen wealth that is the problem but the gradual degradation of the nigerian mentality so much so that he/she cannot comprehend properly anymore. You think it is easy to be a crook here? I beg you please come and try it. Where is it easier? In a country where laws are effectively policed and enforced or where there is none? (nigeria). If you live in an environment where you have to bribe your way constantly and on a daily basis then you are a crook. I am guilty of that crime too when I was living there. . . .why? Because the nigerian environment encourages it, fertilizes it. . . . But please come and demand or give bribe here and see the consequences. If you like deny that you don't do it and I will remind you that if at anytime you use these words this week and are living in nigeria then you are a crook, settle, arrange, give am something, drop something. . . . . grin

what are the details of her employment contract? is it the banks policy to fly their staff abroad for medical care? Are they obligated to? Much as I sympathise with the family of the deceased, nigerians are too emotional and look at issues from a weired perspective. If you have to petition then petition your legislators to make laws that will force companies to take health insurance on their staff. That is how it's done. There is no emotion when it comes to business. What you rely on are laws to protect you because every company exist to make money and shaft you at every opportunity. The sooner we realize that life is about rules, proceedures, guidlines, the law and less about emotion the better for us. Think about it, if it was the law to have insurance on staff and the bank did not, do you think we would be talking petition or lawsuit. I don't think the bank has any fault here but government for not looking out for the working class. Fracking country. Anyway, may her soul rest in perfect peace. . . . . .

The problem here is that all too often these naturalized yanks often develop a concommitant contempt for their country of origin again no thanks to dumbed-down simplistic Yankee TV networks.
Being perfect? nope, not at all. they still have a long way to go. and guess what? they are always finetuning ways to be perfect. and yes they are the number one country in the world as far as i am concerned. wait until you experience true freedom then you will understand. i am not talking about the freedom to throw trash on the streets or loot public funds but to live as a human being.

anyways @ topic, nobody said nigeria was perfect but we should ask ourselves what is BBC's aim in trying to show a "law and disorder" film about nigeria to their citizens?  The media has always existed as an outlet to shape people's opinion. How do you think this documentary and other news about nigeria will shape the average British person's idea of what nigeria is and what a nigerian is? Is this film benefitial or detrimental to us as Nigerians? How? What are the intent of the filmmakers?
Typical Nigerian. never wants to admit the obvious and the glaring truth. hoping christ will come one day to deliver the situation. why ask so many questions knowing the answers to them. i hope and pray for your sake that you are "indoctrinated" too, as you call it, so that your eyes will open and realise how fracked up life is in nigeria. There is nothing okay about sleeping with one eye open at night, giving 20 naira to police openly at every intersection, applauding corrupt politicians, voting and knowing full well your vote wont count and living life just to survive in the midst of plenty. worse still, denying your problems and castigating anybody who tries to make you face them. i wish everybody had a father like mine. one of the most important lessons he taught me was to open my arms to critisisms from others, digest them, discard the ones i believe dont apply to me and rectify the ones that do. you'll be surprised how fast and far you'll grow as an individual. to further the point, i was plesantly surprised to find out that in my proffession you get a monthly criticism from your chain of command called a monthly counseling. This is done to make you face your flaws, commend you on your achievements, help you sustain them and lastly set goals for the next month. This type of leadership style is now very typical in most establishments here. What will we become as individuals, organizations, or society without criticisms. That’s the difference between us an them. They do not like to deceive themselves too much. You should be thankful that bbc is doing this since nobody has the muscle to do it in Nigeria and make government sit up.

why r u guys tearing your pants over the documentary, you piece of cu#t heads.

who dear insults bbc2 or members of its press team, you cu#t should understand atleast some countries take their job seriously,

sometime ago i watched this documentary on one of them korean countries dont know which it is south or north cant effing remember but one of the two has an effing closed system,

the bbc sent their white biatch to go document even despite her efforts to document sh#t about the country she had nuthin cause the govt had such high regard for its citizens, first the silly woman was told she could film certain things, also if she crossed a particular line they wouldnt hesitate to shoot her white ignorant backside and their were certain places she wasnt allowed the go,

man the bloody woman left with nothing,

but in our own case this bloody bastards are allowed inside the country illegally first of all, i can bet u this pple dont even take legal permission from the govt of nigeria, they just land with their cameras, whoop that sh#t out and start to film, why wont dey document sh#t like the law and disorder in lagos, cmon pple use your heads, a country that has no law atleast i knw i have friends in media skools and i know permission should be taken from the state before filming, what a silly country with idiots as leaders,

i mean their last documentary THIS IS LAGOS was a global hit with thousands of hits on youtube and viewer when it aired on t.v( which is what oyinbo wants na, good t.v ratings and millions of viewers tuning in to laff at us), i wasnt mad at the bad press on this is lagos cos i know the british press never says and will never say a good thing about africa and they have their reasons which i totally understand but the only poo that i got upset with was this ignorant, bloody silly cu#t d#ck head nigerian saying to me that the documentary was good and it would boost investment within the nation,

i mean common what business man or country would want to invest in an unstable economy,

anyways blah blah blah, u guys can effing debate all you want but i do blive we av media skool graduates, the problem isnt them it is us and we as nigerians simple,

first the govt should but a check on what is been documented, secondly our fu#king media should step up to the plate.
can you please summarize what you have just posted. we cant understand it. too long and disjointed. undecided

NEWSFLASH!!!!BRIBERY EXISTS EVERYWHERE IN THE WORLD
No doubt. Not just bribery but much more. the difference is what percentage of those crimes and vices compared to the population, how rampant, what is the mentality of the citizens of those countries towards these crimes, what security agents do to prevent, pursue and punish offenders of these crimes when found guilty. do you see my train of thought? Nigeria is a country where people openly applaud corruption. before you'all start bashing ask yourself; have you given bribe this month (given any kind of gratification before services or entrance is rendered to you) or seen a situation where bribe was given? anybody living in nigeria who says no to this is a liar.

when was the last time you turned on the tv and saw anything positive aired in the western media about africa?

when they tell you africa is run by corrupt murderous dictators do they tell you that they are the ones who finance the coup d'etats that install these people, the likes of Mobutu Seseko of Zaire, IBB of nigeria, OBJ of nigeria Idi Amin of Uganda to name a few who do you think assisted them into office?

When they tell you our economies are basket cases they forget to mention how they collude with these same dictators to devalue our currencies , sell off our public services so that their foreign companies can come in and buy them up for next to nothing, dictate to us how much we should sell our oil to them, impose so called structural adjustment programmes which stipulate that our govts shoudl cut spending on education, health care etc

Are you aware that it was during Buhari's tenure in office that our debt was almost paid off and it was because of this very reason that he was overthrown by way of a coup d'etat and replaced with IBB who implemented IMF and world bank SAP programmes.

Let us face facts, most places in lagos are crappy, you can't always expect them to show us the Ozumba Mbadiwes and the lekki extensions.
The real Lagos, is that which is overrun by area boys, infested with LASMA and KAI and inhabited by 2 groups of people, the minority rich and the overwhelming poor.
We hate it, but it's true, as for focusing on Nigeria and not  mentioning other african countries, well its a fact that NIgeria is perhaps the most prominent country in Africa, you wont expect them to start airing documentaries about countries with a population less than lagos except of course something drastic happens there so forget reading about gabon, ghana etc. . . . nah, not that catchy or colourful.

And when we target them make sure we take out their oppressive security detail too. So to be sure all 36 governors must go and their deputies, IG of police, Heads of Service, all senators but not all House of Rep, just heads of committees, I think that should be enough to shake the establishment

@bidemi12 so what's your solution?
It is already happening. the ideology is starting to take root. what is the crutch that the elite is relying on? the belief that there is nothing we can do. They say "we have taken away their vote, the police is in our pocket and we have the assembly too" so if one by one, known and corrupt politicians like igbinedion are bombed sporadicaly or sniped you will see others sitting up. a society which exist where actions have no consequence is bound to collapse. obviously, Nigeria can never go to war again. (too many tribes and ethnic groups and the civil war has thought us that it would be the govt against a minority) but brute force from special interest groups fighting for their individual demands will force government to realize that good and equitable leadership for all is cheaper (not to mention safer) than the alternative. Mend is a prime example. See how government treats them like eggs; very carefully.

The funny thing is you are benefiting from sacrifices of others but are scared of the notion of physicaly making that same sacrifice. Do you think the world would be the way you think now if the allies waved placards at the germans instead of meeting them toe to toe? You want Nigeria to remain one right? @Cap28 In civilised countries people are allowed to have different ideologies without killing each other, I respect your socialist views even though I don't agree with them. I am an entrepreneur I employ over 30 staff in Nigeria and a few in UK, so I guess I am a capitalist.

but remember this thread was on the efficacy of violence. I reiterate my fear that your views on violence are very similar to the views expressed by Stalin and Mao TesTung which killed millions and both Russia and China now have serious capitalist tendencies if not democratic government, I am trying to discourage you from thinking that only violence can solve Nigeria's problems.

I for one I am hoping for the day western companies come to Nigeria and bring FDI in areas other than oil and gas. I want unilever to open factories and shops, I want Taiwan & Korean factories to open factories in Nigeria, I want General Motors to open factories and showrooms in Nigeria. But with the current bunch of corrupt, blind politicians we have , the anti investment culture in the this country, this is not going to happen for a long time.

For the record the first and second world wars were not fought between left and right, but much more complex than that, I suggest you read your history.
Name one civilized country that did not fight a war to instill the ideologies you so proudly associate with. You are a capitalist right? Guess who fought  for all of us to ensure that ideology was intact. (cold war) They did not wave placards for this to happen because the enemy was as ambitious to instill theirs (communism, Russia) on all of us.

@Cap28 Now you see why violence is not the answer? I am a capitalist, you sound like a socialist, by the time we both look for change in the country through violence, both of you & I will kill the so-called elite (I see you didn't address that in your reply) but anyway we take over power, we get rid of corruption, then what? me and you fight each other because I am a capitalist, I want a free market, I want to encourage investment and foreign trade, you other hand appear to be a socialist, you probably believe in government or state control of industry (bring back NITEL I hear you cheer).

so we have different ideologies, that's no bad thing but how do we settle our differences, we are now used to violence, so we go to what we know best we start killing each other.

How does that help the country?

Remember this thread starting as whether we cheer the bombers in Abuja or not, you if I recall correctly said type of action is good, I say it isn't. But unlike civilised countries we would likely to settle our differences through the barrel of gun, rather than ballot box, people power or civil disobedience (which is how apartheid in South Africa and Segregation in the Southern US States ended).

PS
I said western investment in Africa is extractive industries oil & gas, mining. You have supported that with your own stats. Real FDI is when foreign investors build houses, hotels, factories, telecoms in another country because they can make a profit, by they same token develop the country they are located and give jobs, apart from Lebanese and Indians do you see any new foreign factory or business in Nigeria apart from OIL & GAS? We have an inflated opinion of Nigeria. Even our African brother Obama didn't think it necessary to visit Nigeria
With all you have postulated so far you have not itemized what to do when Nigerians confront their local government chairmen as you say and demand how their taxes are spent. Please remember that the realities on ground is that you will most likely be sent back or worse still beaten up by thugs for being nosey. And when you report the situation to the police they will look the other way because the chairman is a ‘’big man’’. The only weapon left to you is your vote, but guess what? Your vote doesn’t count. You have been citing some great countries so far; china, US, france, etc, but you forget that these countries went through the same problems we are facing right now (bad leadership), and guess how they began to solve it? BRUTE FORCE. Let me not go too far. Lets use Liberia as an example. They had the same problem and fought it out. Now they are at peace and anybody who might have the notion to take them for a ride would think twice before attempting it. Some countries are blessed with great leadership from the onset and do not have to fight it out and some have to.  Let me use another example, Ghana. In accra Ghana there is a beach near a hill and on that hill are stakes still there that were used for firing squads (they took out all the old farts in government that were holding them to ransom). They are still visible to all as a reminder to anybody who might want to take them for a ride again.
