in as much as piracy is hated with venom by software developers, its is what has kept Microsoft in Dominance over the years especially in developing countries , i went into a real IT store recently and i was an original copy of xp professional which was priced 25,000 k , i was wow , is this still the same thing i could get for free via torrent and for 150 in otigba , i just cant imagine myself buying xp for that amount , one its not worth it , two i dont even have the money , but in an ironic way MS prefer pple use pirated windows than use Linux which on must occasions are free , that is why MS is doing little to stop piracy in places like china, the number exported of pirated windows , the best way to stop piracy is not to buy/ use pirated product , when this is no market it wont sell , but we all no that cant happen , how many pple in this country can realy pay for the photoshop, dreamweaver, coral draw autoCad they use , yeah not many , so i guess the issue of piracy with its many advantages and disadvantages has come to stay , |
check out naija premier phone trading sitepls stop spaming the forum , what kind of business do u run when u can not follow simple rules , there is a technology market section were u can easily sell ur wares without problem , look at the title of this thread , does it say anything about selling phones, pls show the world that ur business has some credibility and that u are not a desperate quark , follow the rules ![]() |
simply awesosme , good to see that u are feeling at home eith ubuntu , sorry i didnt reply ur mail , i get quite a lot and i most have missed it , am very sorry , pls mail me again , this time i will reply , |
between, one of my headaches with vista is all th ish they copied from linux and mac . UAC is basically an advanced form of what is used in MAC. with UAC on, too many of my apps will not work right . in the same way, too many tweaks in vista now have to be run through the command line,(linux style - i think) or in the registry.the UAC bleeped up with vista cus , it was poorly implemented, the windows kernel needs to the rewritten for such things to work well , the reason for their success on unix based systems is because they have been built from ground up to be that way, windows is flawed , on linux we have the kernel with is compiled differently from the gui and other libs , so a problem with one wont affect the other , on windows, both the kernel, the gui, internet explorer, windows explorer were all compiled together , so if u hack the explorer u can reach deep into the kernel and cus havoc , that is why the biggest hole in windows in the internet explorer , windows has a long way to go b4 it can attain the security level of linux, under xp, i can determine how much hard disk space i'm allocating to system restore from the gui, in vista, it has to be from the commandline. thankfully, the third party vendors are now releasing apps that enable you to do stuff like that via guii think the fact that winodows now allows u to use the cmd is a blessing in disguise , the cmd is a very power tool that many window user should learn to use , some of my grips with windows is the over simplication of things that should not be made that simple , yeah its good to have gui, but some times talking to the computer in the best language they understand gives the best result , most problems pple have on windows can easliy be solved with a cmd line post, |
No problem mahn , , i guess we have sorted that out, about the autocad and their alternatives, the key word is market share , and has Linux gain more of the from the Desktop front it wont be long b4 they all make port for linux , forget their stupid stats once they is a will there is a way, the issue is this maybe i didn't quite put it properly, in an office, you take what works , so you can maximize efficency. too much commercial software does not run on linux for the reasons mentioned above. the same thing which makes linux secure - the fact that it is not used by enough businesses to make hacking it viable - plays against it, it is not used by enough businesses to make porting popular commercial software to it viable.u are quite right mahn , the commercial vendors , its al about the money and windows gives them all the customers there need, , but there are still some power Open source programs out there , maybe not for CAD but in areas of Graphics, Video Editing ,acounting , even then some commercial vendors like maya have native linux port , and google is working on a Linux port for photoshop , on a whole though , the biggest freedom in life is freedom of choice , and u use what works for u, i have be doing all my business on Open source programs and i have not problem, am sure u too have little issues running ur own programs, so we are both happy with what we use , ![]() about esquire , he too is a good friend , (actually was one of the guys that broght me to Linux) what u had was a misunderstanding , i understand ur view and his view , u guys should just work things out , i hate being put in the middle when my too good friends are in a misunderstanding , cheers N.B the same thing which makes linux secure - the fact that it is not used by enough businesses to make hacking it viableno that is not true, do u know how many hacker would make serious money if they were able to hack say, first bank's database , or western union mysql powered data base , Linux's is not easy to hack cus it is secured from ground up, it was built to be secured, built by hackers , in a 3 days hacking contest recently it took 2 min to hac the latest mac, 1 day to hack vista , ubuntu the least secured linux was never hacked , they couldnt do it , windows get easily hacked because of gapping holes in the system, it doesnt take a guru to hack windows and it relies on 3rd party suit for security, believe me there is no joy or rep in hacking windows , the system maks it easy for u, hack a linux system and u would be made president of the hacking world , (if there is ever any post like that) |
Largely i have often said , Use what works for u, if Xp does , fine , if Vista does , ok , for me and many others it is Ubuntu that work for us , i don't want to go into any debate with which OS is better or not , i believe my position on that matter has been made known on many occasion in this forum , just check back on some of my post u would see , what i just want to correct is your mis informed opinion that Linux is not meant for professional use , believe me i could not believe that Oyb could say a thing like that , ( if are one of the few people i have respect for on this forum) check novel and redhat , this two comapnies thrives on the enterprise market and over the years there have made strong returns in profits , why cus they deal with big business . ( am always busy on my system just tot i should make a quick reply to correct your impression). iam sorry i can't give u links but then u have google , professional and the enterprise market is where Linux truely shines , check many banks today , yeah even in Nigeria , the core of their business is run on Linux , most of your celtel mtn and co all have run linux severs , oracle works best with linux , even in the hollywood 90% of animation is done with Linux workstations , the Newyork stoke exchange, the french parliament and police, dreamwork studios, and whole lot of cooperations have the core of their business running on Linux , tell me how many professional organization run Vista , the saying has aways been that Linux is not ready for the Desktop ( i.e for home users) -Linux is a big player in the enterprise world , be it servers, workstations, embedded devises-, but even the notion that linux is not meant for home users is changing , with the success of the eee pc, and the lunching of msi and xo , Linux has virtually taken over the ultra potable market , i have installed Ubuntu for numerous people ( 3 out of 4 people today alone) and there find it very easy to use , things are not perfect .. issues still persist , yeah the compatibility problems are still there , but u can't blame that on Linux, because windows has a better chance of being perfect than Linux , why , most hardware vendors write drivers for windows , the case is not so for Linux , on many occasions Linux devs have to blindly write the drivers for most hardware for Linux using reverse engineering cus the hardware vendors have refused to write their drivers for linux, i know a guy who hav written over 200 webcam drivers for Linux even though he doesn't work in a webcam company and they all work , the webcam driver for my sony vaio in Ubuntu works better than the driver that came with it in vista, yet many of linux developers are mere volunteers who code in their spare time , but have full jobs as lawyers, docs construction workers etc , compare to vista which M$ spent a whooping 6 billion dollars developing Vista, ( the amount it took to make the atomic bomb) , oh shit , this post was suppose to be short , oh well , i guess i will have to stop here , about the linux version of Autocad , i just opened add and remove on Ubuntu typed CAD and see what it came up with , , a yeah and their all free and open source , maybe not has good has your over $600 windows version , but it get the job done ,

awesome good to see another Linux dude in the house , i have the puppy cd though i dont use it much , i find the default icewm to be very ugly for my liking , but i can see that u have install xfce on it which is cool , i even though i love keeping things light i have been doing a poor job at it cus am addicted to gnome ( i have tried xfce, kde, icewm, enlightenments, and lxde ) but which time i keep falling back to gnome , u can see some of my screeshots here http://flickr.com/photos/8383774@N06/ , on idle mode my system eats a whooping 255mb out of my 2gb ram which is much by linux standard but heck , BTW have u tried LXDE its a very cool Desktop environment kinda a balance between keeping it light and beautiful , if u use ubuntu u can add the repo to ur sources http://people.linux.org.tw/~pcman/ubuntu , cheers U like the Vista Look I prefer the Mac LOok

sorry bro i have not tried to install any ubuntu on a flash , the closest i came to installaing a linux distro on a flash was when i tried puppy , but what the heck take the plunge and tell us how it went , if u ever get jammed up, there is always google |
Posted by: lynxnoonFirst thing i must tell u is that wine as awesome but it is can does not work with every Windows application , the reason being that MS did not release the API of Windows to the wine developers and the must time have to use reverse engineering to guess how this APIs works , it works sometimes , other times it doesn't ( but u just have to give it to them their are doing a great job) , however i must say that even though i have wine installed i hardly use it , cus i have native ubuntu programs for everything i need , and even realpayer and limewire have have Ubuntu versions , and must of all there even are better alternative programs that are open and work way way better , to get the Ubuntu version of limewire , go to their website (google it "say limewire for LInux Download" but i tell u there is the program called frostwire its open source and it is way way better than Limewire , however u need to have Java runtime installed on your system bcus both lime and frostwire are java programs that need java to run , to install java just go to add and remove under Applications/Add and Remove set it to all available applications , then type java amongst the options u would be given u would see sun java 5.0 runtime and ubuntu restricted extras install the both of them , and u are done , u can now go and install either lime or frost which ever u like , as per the realplayer , , let me start by saying that realplayer is very useless in linux , and there are better alternatives in vlc, kaffeine , and xine , but if u still want to install it just type helix player in add and remove install it and u are done , hope i was able to help

welcome , hope u do make some positive different here , enjoy ur stay |
@ Namdi the conky guide u have to create a text file in your home folder , so open gedit , and copy and paste the fllwing code inside it ,
save this in your home folder and name it .conkyrc don't forget to put the fullstop in front, it makes it invisible , now in other not to make it flicker u have to add this to your x.org file open your x.org file sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf find the section titled Section "Module", and add Code: Load "dbe" to make it start with your system u need to create to creat a startup scrit which would be saved in your home folder open your gedit and paste this code inside #!/bin/bash have it in your home folder as .conky_start.sh Make sure the script is executable: by running this in terminal chmod a+x .conky_start.sh and add it to your startup programs (menu: system->preferences->session->startup programs browse to your home folder and choose the conky_start.sh script u just created, if u don't see it right click and check show hidden files , there u have it , your own conky , here is mine u can see it on the right side of my screen , its a text based system monitor

from what i have heard (and i have not done any research of my own to comfirm this, the thing is caused by a virus , appearantly undetected by ur everyday AV (for now) and the main target seem to be yahoo msger , as alternative u could download and install pidgin http://www.pidgin.im/download/windows/ its not are featured filled as yahoo , its quite simple and a good substitute for yahoo msger at least till the problem is fixed, its also a multi login clients that supports msn jabber and other stuffs , u can also install trilian google it. |
i think i now get ur drift , |
come oga! why u still dey opress boys with your crazy/brilliant desktop images? Grin u better stop ooooo! otherwise BAN! Grin Tonguethanks for ur comments i agree some hardware can be a bitch with linux, just make sure u check the ubuntu forums for compatibility b4 u buy an hardware if u intend on using it for linux, bout my blog, am just waiting for the hardy release to settle down so that i can update , here is the latest look of my desktop
|
i seriously doubt the sincerity of those RAM figures - unless y'all PRECONFIGURED the ram on the manufacturer's site/or upgraded by yourselves.that is sooo not true , most latops now ship 2gb ram has standard especially with the release of vista , which requires a recommended ram of 2 gb to work seamlessly , infact i have seen system that came with 4gb of ram by default, though it most be said that it would be quite a waste since vista 32bit can only recognize 3.5 gb ram maximum , how ever a lot of 64 bit vista systems do come shipped with 4gb ram , now adays 512 mb is the lowest ram u would ever see in a new lappy with was 256 a while back |
@ mmonwuba since it seems u have tried everything , let me just add my 2 cent , first disable all firewall, disable all AV programs (dont worry we are just trouble shooting the problem ) , go to ur internet options and make usre that u are connecting directly to the internet , u can also check ur TCP/IPV4 properties and make ur that u addy is automatic or static (with the manual config) as the case may apply with u , if all said and done u still cant browse then my addy is to get a storage drive, backup the system and reinstall the bitch, from scratch , u would be surprised what a reinstall can do , @ Neoteny how is ur hardy experience going, i had to downgrade back to gutsy due to some yet to be resolved issue that is being experienced on hardy , hope to hear from u soon , ![]() |
just another day on my desktop , although u dont have to there are more easier ways to install things on Ubuntu , i still prefer compiling my softwares from source , that way i learn linux better , and it also works better for my machine below am compiling a psp video converter while chating with a friend
|
