man u might not know it but if u are using an intel card then compiz ( the 3d stuff) is already activated bcus the driver for intel cards esp intel GMA 954 is embebded in the ubuntu os ,  but if u use other cards like nvidia or ati then u gave to download the driver , there is a utility called restricted driver under system/administration which would show u all your restriced drivers ,  u just check them and it would install the drivers and configure them for u ,  any case sha just let me know your graphic card cus compiz will not work unless u have a graphic card

Good job. Issues however are as follows:
[li]what if my device connects through PCMCIA port and not usb?[/li]
[li]how do I build my own driver if the OS doesnt support the hardware?[/li]
Thanks.
it would still work if ur evdo connection is thru a usb mode , bcus in reality the pcmcia card is recognised as a usb device on ur pc , so u wouldnt have any problem , if u use linux all u have to do is follow the above guide and u would be home and dry ,

ComputersMicrosoft Pulls Vista Sp1 Prerequisite Update: Reboot Loops, Data Corruption by bigrovar(op): 9:16pm On Feb 25, 2008
reboot loops, data corruption
22nd February 2008 James Bannan Microsoft, Vista, Windows

In the approach to the pending release of Windows Vista SP1 via Windows Update, Microsoft has released a couple of prerequisite updates, designed to prep a system to receive SP1 and without which SP1 won’t be made available.

According to Microsoft, one of these patches – KB937287 – is “… the component that handles the installation and the removal of software updates, language packs, optional Windows features, and service packs. Update 937287 is necessary to successfully install and to remove Windows Vista SP1 on all versions of Windows Vista.”

If you’ve downloaded the full standalone SP1 install package, KB937287 is installed during the update process.

However, within the last couple of days Microsoft has pulled this update from Windows Update after some users complained of their machines behaving erratically, getting stuck in a reboot loop, or in one users’ case, “data corruption” which was “resolved” by wiping the hard drive.

In the Windows Vista Team Blog, Nick White commented that “…immediately after receiving reports of this error, we made the decision to temporarily suspend automatic distribution of the update to avoid further customer impact while we investigate possible causes.”

“So far, we've been able to determine that this problem only affects a small number of customers in unique circumstances. We are working to identify possible solutions and will make the update available again shortly after we address the issue.”

So far there hasn’t been any information released on what it is precisely which triggers the fault, but there have various suggestions made by users and Microsoft technicians on how to get around the problem. Indeed, it was suggeted that the one user who reported data corruption and claimed that he had to wipe the hard drive (losing data in the process) acted prematurely and didn’t need to take such drastic steps.

There are a couple of fixes suggested for the reboot loop, which reportedly work well. More information on that here.

Bear in mind that KB937287 is not a component of SP1. Additionally, there’s next to no evidence to suggest that this is a widespread problem. Personally, I’ve installed SP1 on around nine machines, all different hardware platforms, running a mixture of Vista Enterprise, Vista Home Premium and Vista Ultimate (32- and 64-bit) and haven’t had a single issue.

so beware when uodating ur vista to a new service park

ComputersRe: Linux or Windows Operating System? by bigrovar(m): 6:45pm On Feb 22, 2008
Did you even read my post at all?
I'm clearly replying what Niggy wrote, and to help you i even quoted (obviously) him dissing Windows users.
Checked the last 4 posts, did you? Was it too difficult to read the posts on the same page before sermonizing?
am very very sorry like oyb said the post is quite old infact it has been there for eternity (august 2007) that didnt quite think that anybody could be making refernce to it, but am sorry,

unfortunately, despite influential people like Torvalds calling for respect for Windows and Windows users you've got linux geeks around the world bashing people who use Windows.
mahn OS bashing goes both ways , and no particular os can claim that its users are innocents, windows users call their linux counterpart geeks, communist, opensource hippies and all sort of names, even u used users to qualify people that run windows and geeks to qualify does that run linux

There's a choice to be made and at this point it's far more comfortable for me to use Windows. I've got no internet access at home (waiting for broadband) and thus i've no patience with tutorials telling me to download this codec, this library or that dependency. My Windows just works for what i want to do and that serves me ok.
neither do i have an internet connection at home , but just like windows u have to be online to download codecs that are not preinstalled with the os, this is standard , on vista i had to go online search google on how to install codecs for aac,vob,ogg,rm,mp4,mv,avi, and so many others, i ended up with a program called
vista codecs
which caused windows vista to give an error called "cum surrogate error" it was until i "paid for " and downloaded nero that the problem stoped, even then i have to use itunes to play aac files since windows media player library doesnt see it, and where do u get itunes from, u guessed right, so my library is split into windows media player if i want to play wma files and itunes if i want to play aac files ,
on ubuntu gutsy all u have to do is attempt to play a file and ubuntu would offer to download the codec for u if u don't already have it installed, u don't need a tutorial for that but just like windows u need internet for the download, even when u install ultimate edition all the codecs u ever need is preinstalled and u wont have to install anything, i have the iso i can burn it for u if u want,
too much as been made about the over dependence of ubuntu on internet, when it is windows that needs all your drivers to be downloaded when u install a new system, abi where do u get yahoo msger, office, idm, photoshop, the aformentioned codecs , etc, all this comes preinstalled with ubuntu, at least their open source equivalent, yes u still need to get additional stuffs online but then so is windows, ubuntu installs 90 % of your drivers by default in most cases 100%, try installing vista or xp on a lappy like a fairly used own esp one with no recovery disk,

I personally have no problem with linux. i took the step of installing ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon on my playstation 3. I had gentooX linux running on my xbox long ago. I follow up progress on numerous PS3 hacking sites to find out when they'll be able to enable hypervisor (3d GPU support) for the PS3 version of linux. I've been able to install VLC and Mplayer on my PS3 to play VCDs. Currently i've got my PS3 hooked up to my TV, running at 1080i resolution, with a wireless keyboard and mouse. In short, a full fledged Linux PC.
like i always say ubuntu and linux in general work best on a destop/laptop , mehn so u used gentoo, even me dey fear that thing, it is very notorious even in the linux community, it is used by the guruiest of gurus , the desktop version don't even come with a gui on an installer u have to compile everything u need,

What i have a problem with is an idiot babbling about windows users having 'shallow computer minds'. Simple as that.
i don't say things derogatory about people who don't use the same as as me or disagree with my point of view, u can't always control what people say, but that is a wrong thing to say , if u was not quoted out of context,

Want my advice? get matured.
thanks mahn , i never feel that am matured enough for my liking but i always try to be more matured today than i was yesterday

open a post giving tutorials to people how to use linux, instead of this silly privates measuring contest here. In the first 15 posts here in the computers section not one is about Linux.
mahn your adverse came late, i am founding member of ubuntu nigeria and we have members all over Nigeria the purpose of the group is to help people how are new to linux with guides ,supports and cd/dvds , we have a blog www.ubuntunigeria. which is full of tutor guides many of which were writing by your truely , covering many aspect of ubuntu from dual booting to connecting to the net via dialup/evdo etc and many more, i even droped my number that and i tell u i can't count how many people have called me asking for help on how to install ubuntu , if they are in lagos i invite them to my house, i have install ubuntu for countless of pples. i don buy over 100 dvds of high quality which i burn ubuntu and its applications just to give out freely to people , i have sent cds to abuja ,uk and the middle east on request, hardly a week goes by without me giving a guy an ubuntu cd or assist in its installation, add that to my windows blog www.bigbrovar. which is stocked with tutors and guides and my vista problem thread here on nairaland, mahn u have to gave me little credit here at least i can say i have tried, but then i can't help every tom privates and harry on nairaland , abi is it every window guy that has a problem that u help?

There's a Post somewhere a guy was asking for help after installing Ubuntu. it's near the bottom of the 'Computers' section. It's a crying shame people like bigrovar didn't stop by to help the guy out instead of making time out to attack me.
like i said am not always online and i might have missed it but then i have a blog and many of the tutors are there ,

n the first 15 posts here in the computers section not one is about Linux.
the benchmark for how good linux is , is not based on how often it is talked about on nairaland, even with that 60% of post in nairaland are from people seeking help for one problem with windows or the other,
ComputersRe: Linux or Windows Operating System? by bigrovar(m): 10:52am On Feb 22, 2008
mahn am starting to feel its either u are obsessed with dissing linux , or u feel insecure anytime u see someone make a post about linux , gee i checked the last 4 posts and no body made a derogative remark about windows, yet it seems to sparks a plug in ur brain anytime u see a post about linux no matter how innocent it may be, wetin be your problem now, u cant use ur own experience with linux as a benchmark for judgiung the os in general, habba , i and millions of other pple that use do so becus it works for us, so do the billions that use windows , many of them use it becus it works for them , so u see every os has its pro and cons , as i write this a window user is on his way to see me leaving his work and everything that u has planned for the day just to fix is laptop that can preinstalled with windows, yet there are millions out there u dont have any problem with their window box, so mahn if windows works for u, use it, but leave linux users and their and their problems alone, its what i use and i greatly enjoy it,

ComputersRe: Post Your Vista Problems Here by bigrovar(op): 5:10pm On Feb 11, 2008
First question i would ask u is, did your system come preinstalled with window vista business, i.e is it an OEM version of vista business or vista was installed on it, if the answer is yes then the problem of always requesting for an activation key is a bug in vista that has been fixed by a particular update, which i uploaded some where on this thread, 2 if no, then mail me so that i can send u a vista activation crack (although my system came preinstalled with vista home premium, the activation crack am talking about is soo good that i installed vista ultimate on my system and i use it without any activation problem, am even able to install updates from MS sites, -- about your problem with vista basic all i can say is that maybe the disk u are using for ur installation is faulty maybe u should try another disk,
ComputersRe: The Best Desktop Or Laptop Screenshots! by bigrovar(m): 12:52am On Feb 09, 2008
Hey man, every one knows there's no such thing as the "Best Desktop". What may appeal to you may not appeal to the next person. Some like clear empty and organised desktops while others enjoy having every last file and software to cover every inch of their desktops. Sad

Some don't even believe it's possible to work with a clear desktop free of untidy icon arrangements and stuff. Lips sealed
well said , for me i hate to having a spec of file or link on my desktop, i love it to be very clean and organized, my desktop is my virtual living room, so i like it clean and tidy (everything that my room is not) i also love to use dock programs and widgets, most importantly, i love and am a sucker for a Free and Opensource Desktop, cus with that there is no restriction to what i can do with it, i own my desktop and i can bend it twist it and make it look just like i want,

am using just 350mb or ram out of the total 2gb i have on my system, but i don't know what the memory requirement on windows would be like, since windows run something that is quite different and might not be well intergrated into the windows shell because its a 3rd party app which is not supported by MS, However i have seen Cube on windows and it quite good, just not as seamless and smooth as it is on linux, but with time it improve, the guys working on the project are doing an awesome job, compiz on linux --- is very minimal on resources

@anusule
My My Sony Vaio laptop is Core 2 Duo, 1.666Ghz and 1gb memory and it's still fast even with the vista and 100GB HDD, i'm realy suprised with these comments
u think ur system is fast abi, why dont u load xp on the same specs then u would know what we are talking about, i use sony vaio fz21e 160gb,2gb ram,core2 duo 2.0ghz on nvidia graphic card 8400 , definitaly not the best system out there when it comes to configuration, but u cant call it low either, but vista drags on this system, and please dont tell me that i over loaded it with apps, i know windows well than to load it up with irrelevant 3rd party apps infact i had to disable all my startup programs except my AV even with that vista acts like a Bitch, draging and slowing me down, although i read some where that the new SP1 for vista has addressed the issue, but i havnt tried it out
ComputersRe: Whats Actually Wrong With Vista? by bigrovar(m): 11:24am On Jan 03, 2008
I used to think that vista was tha Bomb too, until i found out that that shit is just a stupid memory hug, the problem of vista are so numerous it cant all be discussed in one reply, i setup a thread a while back to help pple with vista problem and it had over 3000 views and about 200 post https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-58218.0.html all kind of problems, u can check it out to see what some of the problem is , for me my first beef with vista is the fact that it uses soo much memory, i mean on idle mode vista uses about 650MB of ram, mehn that is crap so i use 40% of my 2gb ram to run an OS where as Xp less than 200mb on idle mode, now try runing internet explorer, windows media player, or some memory intensive app like corel draw or photoshop u will find out that u are consuming about 1.5gb of ram, so if u dont have the money to buy a system came with 2gb of ram, then u will have to be ready to shell out 50,000 Naira just to buy ram for ur system, it doesnt make sense, withg xp u can use 512 of ram without whahala,
Vista is also very slow, compared to Xp, U cant just compare the response u get on vista to what u get when u are on xp, believe me, this is my 3rd vista machine so i know what am talking about
add the driver issue and the fact that it is almost impossible to customize except u want to buy a 3rd party app like window blind.
i usually envy my friend using xp cus i cant do most of what he does ,

yeah yeah i know many of u would write back to say that am wrong, just wait till all the Glossiness wears out , then u too would be posting ur problem at my vista problem thread.
