MEND arrests 20 suspected robbers Written by Dayo Johnson Sunday, 21 September 2008 * Recovers 15 guns AT least, twenty suspected robbers have been apprehended by the Movement for the Emancipation of Niger Delta MEND in Ondo State two weeks after they allegedly invaded a divisional police station in Irele local government area of the state. It will be recalled that some youths suspected to be militants from Akotogbo in Irele local government area of Ondo had two weeks ago invaded a divisional police station in Irele and carted away all the arms and ammunition found in the police station. Speaking with newsmen, the spokesperson of MEND in the State, Mr. Ajija Bounanawei in a telephone conversation in Akure, said the group had also recovered 15 AK 47 guns and a large number of live ammunition from the suspects. Bounanawei said they were arrested on Monday in the riverine area after a tip off from Ijaw youths and leaders from Arogbo. He vowed that the suspects would be left off the hook after due consultation with security operatives in the state. According to him “We MEND members are ready to release the ammunitions and the suspected robbers to the relevant security agents to face the law after thorough consultation.” He described as unfortunate government accusations that MEND always master mind criminal activities in the coastal communities in the state. According to him “the arrest of the suspected robbers had vindicated MEND members as law-abiding citizens in the state. “The presence of MEND in Ondo State and the country at large is to ensure justice, fair play and equity, we frown at criminal activities.” The spokesperson, however, blamed the high rate of robbery operations in the coastal communities in the state to invasion of criminals from other neighboring states. The police image maker in the state, Mr. Aremu Adeniran confirmed to Sunday Vanguard the invasion of the police station at Irele two weeks ago, but said he was yet to be briefed about the arrest of the hoodlums by any group. source:http://www.vanguardngr.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=17423&Itemid=43 |

Yar’Adua might not attend UN Assembly By Festus Akanbi, 09.21.2008 Add To Favorites Print This Article Post Comment Indications emerged yesterday that President Umaru Yar’Adua might not attend the 63rd Plenary of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly in New York on Wednesday owing to pressing domestic issues in Nigeria. According to the UN Schedule, the President was slated to address the world body as lead speaker at the assembly afternoon session on Wednesday September 24,2008. However, a Presidency source hinted yesterday that the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Chief Chief Ojo Maduekwe has been mandated to lead the Nigerian delegation to the event on behalf of the President. THISDAY findings showed that the minister and his delegation would be leaving Abuja on Sunday for New York, venue of the meeting. The source disclosed that the President would be staying back in the country to attend the Federal Executive Council Meeting, which coincided with the UN event on Wednesday. According to the source, the President considered the Wednesday edition of the FEC meeting a very crucial matter that demands his physical presence considering the importance of issues slated for consideration, hence his resolve to stay back in Nigeria. The President is expected to receive the report on the harmonisation of the restructured ministries from a committee mandated to determine the new mandate of the ministries, their roles and relationships. It was also gathered that the President intended to approve the list of his new cabinet after weeks of anxiety among the people. According to the UN schedule, President Yar’Adua was to deliver his speech before a gathering of world leaders and observers at 3pm New York time and 8pm Nigerian time. Issues he was expected to focus on included those affecting Africa, as well as other global matters, including climate change, developmental issues, peace keeping and security. He was also scheduled to hold bilateral and multilateral talks with some world leaders and prominent personalities on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. The President was also expected to participate in the high-level meetings on Africa’s Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) on September 22 and September 26. The meeting was convened by the UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon and the incoming President of the 63rd UN General Assembly, Fr. Miguel Brockmann of the Republic of Nicaragua to review progress and challenges facing Africa and the MDGs. Yar’Adua had addressed the assembly in September 2007 for the first time during which he emphasised the role of Nigeria as a promoter of African interests on the global scene and called for a fundamental reform and expansion of the UN Security Council source:http://www.thisdayonline.com/nview.php?id=123080 |
The Nigerian army claim to have killed several militants, arrested many more , repelled attacks , without any casualty recorded . The militants meanwhile, claim to have killed several soldiers, took hostages, sabotage oil installations and admit to some casualties. Shell on the other hand, have evacuated some of their staff and declares force majeure: I wonder where the truth lies, what is really happening in Niger delta? |
Shell declares force majeure Sulaimon Olanrewaju, Lagos with Agency Reports 21.09.2008 Royal Dutch Shell was forced to declare another force majeure on Saturday on crude oil shipments from Nigeria sequel to incessant attacks on its facilities in the Niger delta region. A force majeure is a clause in contracts which essentially frees both parties from liability or obligation when an extraordinary event or circumstance beyond the control of the parties, such as war, strike or riot prevents one or both parties from fulfilling their obligations under the contract. Shell had last week extended a force majeure on Bonny oil exports from Nigeria following a militant attack in late July. It said it declared the second force majeure on Bonny Light shipments following further attacks by militants this past week. The recent declaration of force majeure might be a confirmation of attack claims on Shell facilities by Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) which on Saturday said it had destroyed a key pipeline run by Royal Dutch Shell in the sixth attack in six days. Shell has refused to make comments on the attack claims by the militants. source:http://www.tribune.com.ng/21092008/news/news4.html |

what is it about this Muslims that make them blood thirsty, every one of this crazy militant group want the poor old man dead. the poor old man has done nothing wrong nor has he committed any crime. No where in the Quran or Hadith where death is prescribe for somebody who marry above four wives. This is simple and pure injustice. I'm advising all southerners who has relatives living in the north to warned them to be very careful and be prepared to fled at a moment notice. The whole thing could snowballed into a religious riot and our northern terrorist could embark on their cyclical Dracula carnage. Even issues of less importance has led to the death of hundreds of innocent southerners. |
Man with 86 wives: Northern human rights groups accuse Niger Govt of persecution HUMAN rights groups in the north have faulted the trial of Islamic cleric, Bello Masaba, under the Penal Code law instead of Islamic law saying that the case is not genuine and accused the Niger State Government of persecuting the 84 year-old man, for marrying 86 wives. Lead counsel to the Coalition of Human Rights, Mohammed Sanusi, who made their position known at a news conference in Kaduna, weekend, also faulted the non-admission of Alhaji Masaba to bail as the offences which he is alleged to have committed are bailable. Sanusi said the legal team would file a motion tomorrow, for the case to be struck out as the government has no genuine intentions in prosecuting Masaba source: http://www.vanguardngr.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=17425&Itemid=43 Meanwhile, Muslim youths in Bida, home of the octogenarian, Alhaji Abubarkar Belo Massaba with 86 wives and over 100 children, took to the streets of Bida on Friday with placards not only to disown his action but to pass a death sentence (Fatwah) on him. Association of Muslim Lawyers of Nigeria, in a press conference in Minna, yesterday, also vowed to give free legal service to the Shariah commission in the on-going legal battle between the commission and Alhaji Massaba. In Bida, after the youths had embarked on the peaceful demonstration carrying placards with inscriptions such as, “Massaba must die”, “Bello is not a Muslim”, “Bello must vacate Bida town”, ended up at the Bida local government secretariat to exhibit their anger to the chairman of the council who was represented by his vice, Alhaji Bako Ndayawo |

Riot after Africans shot in Italy Police are investigating whether the two shootings were linked Immigrants in a southern Italian town have rioted after six Africans were killed in a suspected mafia attack outside a shop. People smashed windows and threw rocks in Castelvolturno, north-west of the city of Naples. The six men from Ghana, Liberia and Togo were shot dead late on Thursday. Police say the attack may be linked to a row between the Casalesi clan of the regional Camorra mafia and immigrants involved in drug-trafficking. Two other men were injured in the shooting. Television footage showed men wielding metal bars and forcing traffic to stop on Friday. In a separate incident in Castelvolturno, a man, believed to be an Italian national, was gunned down near a local games hall. Police are now investigating if the two shootings were linked. They say the murders may be connected to drugs-trafficking in the town, where African immigrants have recently begun dealing autonomously, the Italian news agency Ansa says. The Casalesi clan - one of the most feared groups in the Camorra - is believed to control drug-trafficking and prostitution in the region. source:http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/7626099.stm |
I believe Niger Delta will like to go it alone, but what do we do with the neighbouring Ibo , breathing down our neck. the north will certainly be a landlock nation, forget any access to the sea. there is no guarantee that middle belt will go along with the north, there would be nothing for them to gain in the relationship. |
Maasaba’s 86 wives, children protest, invade House of Assembly - Husband asks court to upturn Fatwa From Dipo Laleye and Lanre Adewole - 19.09.2008 A new twist was added to the case of the Islamic scholar with 86 wives, Alhaji Bello Maasaba, when all his wives and some of their children on Thursday embarked on a peaceful protest to the Ministry of Justice and the Niger State House of Assembly, seeking the release of their breadwinner. The women were led by Afusat Bello, who was said to have been involved in the suit filed last Monday challenging the right of Maasaba to marry more than four wives. The women, 11 of them pregnant, who were accompanied by 42 of the 104 children of the Islamic cleric, were conveyed to Minna in two buses, while the children were driven in eight cars. They carried placards which read ‘Release our husband because we’re suffering’, ‘Don’t render our unborn children fatherless,’ ‘We don’t want to go into prostitution’. source:http://www.punchng.com/Articl.aspx?theartic=Art200809182322395 |
