Shell withdraws staff from Niger Delta - After attack on oil facility by militants Bolaji Ogundele, Port Harcourt - 16.09.2008 FOLLOWING an attack on its facilities at Alakiri, which claimed a life, Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) said it was reducing its operations personnel in the Niger Delta region for security reasons. The attack, which the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) said claimed several lives, including those of some soldiers and officials of the SPDC, was launched around 12:35 a.m. on Monday. But contrary to claims of the MEND about multiple deaths in its Hurricane Barbarossa attack, security forces under the Joint Task Force (JTF) Operation Flush Out 3 said they suffered no casualty in the Monday offensive. An SPDC spokesman, in a statement, confirmed that the company lost a community station guard in the attack, while four other workers who sustained injuries were receiving medical attention. The company, which expressed sorrow at the loss of the station guard, said it had reduced its personnel in some of its stations within the region for security reasons. “SPDC’s Alakiri flowstation, gas plant and field logistics base, south west of Port Harcourt, were attacked by unknown gunmen early this morning. Regrettably, a community station guard was killed during the incident. “SPDC is saddened by this fatality and our thoughts are with the family of the late station guard. Four other people are being treated for injuries sustained during the incident at the Shell hospital in Port Harcourt. “As a precautionary measure, SPDC has down-manned facilities in some field locations; for security reasons we cannot give more details. SPDC is aware of the difficulty the security situation places on staff, and continues to monitor developments,” the company stated. Meanwhile, the spokesman for the JTF, Lieutenant Colonel Sagir Musa, in a text message, informed of the attack in the early hours of yesterday. According to him, the militants attacked the flow station at about 12:35 a.m., but were successfully repelled, adding that the attackers were suspected to have suffered heavy losses, but that there was no casualty on the JTF’s side. “Militants in about 10 speedboats attacked our location at Alakiri Shell flow station by 12:35 a.m. The attack lasted for over an hour. Dynamites and bombs were massively detonated by the miscreants and the attack was heroically and successfully repelled by JTF on guard with heavy casualty on the bandits’ side as some of them might have lost their lives in the process. “It is, however, greatly feared that the flowstation might have caught fire due to crossfire during the encounter. This message is necessary to checkmate and avoid wild, misleading propaganda and disinformation by MEND and its cohorts. No casualty on the security forces. The situation is closely being monitored and is under control,” Musa said. The militants, however, claimed to have killed some soldiers in the shoot-out as others fled and that all workers of SPDC at the station were killed in the blaze that was sparked by the cross fire. MEND then warned that it would not take hostages and that any vessel found in the waters of the region would suffer a fate similar to what happened at Alakiri. “At 0200 hours today, September 15, 2008, Hurricane Barbarossa continued its destructive sweep through Rivers State of Nigeria when the eye of the storm struck a direct hit at the expansive Alakiri flowstation complex operated by the Shell Petroleum Development Company. The facility was still burning when we left. “Heavily armed fighters from MEND stormed the facility and have razed it to the ground as promised. The foolhardy workers and soldiers who did not heed our warning perished inside the station. “Resistance was non-existent as the soldiers fled their dug-in positions leaving behind their colleagues and the workers inside the facility to their fate. “A word is enough for the wise. MEND reiterates its previous warnings to ALL oil workers in the entire Niger Delta region to evacuate from oil facilities and halt production with immediate effect or they will have themselves to blame. “We call on the wives of soldiers to convince their husbands to abandon this duty of injustice to avoid becoming widows. Families of oil workers should offer the same advice.” source:http://www.tribune.com.ng/16092008/news/news1.html |
Anthonio With the exploits and technological advancements the Igbos achieved during the war, it was speculated that if the igbos had seceeded, they would have been a real technological superpower in Africa at least.Another deluded Iboman. that is how Ojukwu deceived all of you with sweet talk and empty oratory encouraging the Ibo's to die for Biafra, but when he was threaten with death, he ran away. Ewu Anthonio The Igbo (like the jews) will always be led out of captivity. Why is it that some Ibo like claiming Jewish origin, Some even speculated that they are the lost tribe of Israel. I once watched a video where a group of Ibos dressed like Jews with a rabbi observing the Jewish passover, incredible! There is no historical nor genetic connection between Ibos and Jews. Moreover, the Israeli government has never taken them seriously. Why are some Ibo people determine to scam their way into Israel and pollute the Holy-Land; God forbid , tufiakwa. |

why are they kidnapping Ibo traders, why don't they kidnap their own brothers small time now, aboki people go collect batton, begin kidnap for Kano |
Planner No. You know why? The Yorubas (including Edos ) and Hausa wants to obliterate the Igbo people (to no avail). They will not stop trying, therefore it is better to break up this country. The greatest enemy of the Ibo people are the Ibo leaders. Your leaders think politics is trading, all they care about is making profit. They are always supporting every government in power and a constant visitor to Aso rock to collect their personal share of the national cake at the expense of their people who are wallowing in political wilderness. Politics require ultimate sacrifice, you lack leaders with that attribute A child who refuse to learn the history of his family at home, is likely to be told the truth outside |
Rhino i Personally think breaking nigeria will be the biggest mistakes we cld ever make, nigerians are not that easy to rule, because the break of nigeria into 3 wll surely be the beginning of further disintegration into small units as wellRhino you are very interesting, l ve read most of your post, they are level headed. You talk like a real diplomat. Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called the children of God Sorry , l stand to differ; Nigeria foundation is built on injustice, and is bound to collapse by the weight of truth. Many people are hurt and the perpetrator of the evil are refusing to admit nor apologise for their deeds: How do you appease the Ibo for the pogrom in the north prior to the Biafra war How do you appease the minority in the east for the war crime committed by the Biafra army What about the war crime committed by the Nigeria Army Odi - Army went in and massacre innocent children, women, elderly Benue - Army massacre June 12 - Unknown numbers of people killed by Abacha regime Abiola, Yaradua, Ken Saro-Wiwa - murdered by Abacha regime Religious riot - Every 2 years northerners kill southerners for fun for the sake of religion (kano, Bauchi, Kaduna,) Manipulation of power and resources by certain part of the country The exclusion of the Ibos from power and denial of fair share of national cake Corrupt government, incompetent police, army, and , the list goes on How do you solve the problems, do we just sweep it under the carpet and tell everybody to forgive and forget; when the perpetrators are the power brokers. They neither admit nor apologise for the crime. Infact most of the crime still continues up to this minute The country is Doom!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
Varsity workers begin strike tomorrow Soji-Eze Fagbemi, Abuja - 15.09.2008 University workers across the country will from tomorrow begin a nationwide strike over the issues of monetisation arrears, 65 years retirement age and the unresolved new salary structure. Already, the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has directed its members to stay at home as from tomorrow, following its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held at the University of Abuja, at the weekend and a letter to the Federal Government to this effect. SSANU said the first phase of the strike in all the universities across the country would begin with a three-day warning strike on Tuesday, so as to press home their demands for the payment of the two-year monetisation arrears, resolve the already negotiated issues of their new salary structure and 65 years retirement age. In a letter with reference number SSANU/NS/SGF/45/06, entitled “3- Day warning strike,” and addressed to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Alhaji Yayale Ahmed, the association said the strike would take effect tomorrow and affect all administrative processes, including registrations, bursary, accounting, admission and new intakes, those going on NYSC, as well as examinations and records. Signed by SSANU President, Comrade Promise Adewusi, copies of the letter were sent to the Minister of Education, Dr. Aja-Nwhachukwu; Minister of Labour and Productivity, Dr. Hassan Lawal; Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC); the Senate President, Speaker House of Representatives, and all the vice-chancellors in Nigerian universities. The letter, dated September 12, 2008, read in part: “Following our notice of strike action dated August 19, 2008, addressed to the Minister of Education, we regret to inform you that as a result of the insensitivity of government officials and agencies to the plight of our members and their inability to resolve the issues in contention within the notice period, SSANU-NEC at its emergency meeting of September 12, 2008, resolved to go on a three-day warning strike with effect from Tuesday, September 16, 2008.” source:http://www.tribune.com.ng/15092008/news/news4.html |
Heavier people have heart attacks earlier By Agency reporter Published: Sunday, 14 Sep 2008 The fatter you are, the more likely you are to have a heart attack earlier in life, a new study shows. ”Basically, it is showing that as people got progressively more obese, the rate at which they had heart attacks early went up dramatically,” said Dr. Eric D. Peterson, a professor of medicine at Duke University Medical Center‘s Division of Cardiology and a member of the group reporting the findings. Cardiologists at several institutions studied data on more than 111,000 people who had heart attacks, looking specifically at body mass index (BMI), a measure of obesity. Someone with a BMI of 30 or above is regarded as obese; a person 5 feet, 7 inches tall who weighs 192 pounds has a BMI of 30. The average age of a first heart attack for people with a BMI of 18.5 or under was 74.6 years. For people with a BMI of 40 or over, it was 58.7 years. The age at which a first heart attack occurred went up steadily with increasing BMI -- 3.5 years earlier for a BMI of 25 to 30; 6.8 years earlier for a BMI 30 to 35; 9.4 years for a BMI of 35 to 40; and 12 years earlier for a BMI 40 or higher. ”That is a pretty profound difference,” Peterson said. One reason for the difference is that obese people are more likely to have other risk factors for heart disease, such as diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure. ”But even after adjusting for those factors, just being heavy added considerable risk,” Peterson said. The findings are published in the Sept. 16 issue of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. Another study in the same issue of the journal provided evidence for a mechanism by which obesity increases cardiac risk. Researchers at Leiden University in the Netherlands had obese people with diabetes practice ”prolonged calorie restriction,” or dieting in layman‘s terms. BMI went down. But sophisticated tests such as magnetic resonance imaging and biochemical studies also showed that their bodies were better able to manage blood sugar levels and that there were beneficial effects on heart muscle cells. ”The news here is that heart muscle in obese diabetic individuals can be mobilised by eating less,” said Dr. Heinrich Taegtmeyer, professor of medicine in cardiology at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in Houston and co-author of an accompanying editorial comment. To be sure, the mechanism by which dieting helps heart cells ”is only vaguely understood,” Taegtmeyer said. ”It gets very biochemical and very molecular.” A simple explanation is that caloric restriction activates an enzyme that prevents fat from being deposited in heart cells, he said. Whatever the mechanism, the new research provides ”one more reason not to be fat,” Peterson said. Some obese people have taken comfort from studies indicating that they‘re more likely to survive a heart attack than thinner people, he noted. The new study indicates that the reason for that better survival is the heart attack in fat people occurs earlier in life, when people are otherwise sturdier, he said. ”If you had your choice, you would choose not to have a heart attack in the first place,” Peterson said. Both Peterson and Taegtmeyer cited animal studies showing that strict caloric restriction lengthens life. ”It has been shown in virtually every organism, from yeast to flies to worms to mammals, that caloric restriction heightens life expectancy,” Taegtmeyer said. ”The heart functions better with caloric restriction.” source:http://69.64.47.149/Articl.aspx?theartic=Art200809144331371 |
Militants set to destroy oil facilities - After battle with military - Give oil workers 24 hrs to leave Niger Delta Bolaji Ogundele, Port Harcourt, with Agency Report - 15.09.2008 MILITANTS in the Niger Delta on Sunday declared war on oil facilities in the region as they reportedly suffered fresh heavy casualties after an exchange of gunfire with soldiers guarding two oil facilities at Soku and Robertkiri in Rivers State. The militants had earlier before the attack, on Sunday, warned oil firms in the Niger Delta to withdraw their workers within 24 hours or face a ‘hurricane’ of retaliation after a major gun battle with security forces on Saturday. Apparently in response to the heavy loss, the umbrella body of the militants, Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), said in an electronic statement that it had declared an “oil war” on the oil industry in the Niger Delta. The militant group said the oil war was “in response to the unprovoked aerial and marine attacks on a MEND position in Rivers State of Nigeria on September 13, 2008 by the armed forces of Nigeria.” Spokesman for the Joint Military Task Force III, Lt. Colonel Musa Sagir, told the Nigerian Tribune that the militants had earlier confronted troops on marine patrol at the Elem Tombia creek in which a number of militants were killed, noting that the attack on Soku and Robertkiri facilities was a fight back by the armed group. He claimed that the militants met active resistance from the troops guarding the facilities, as the soldiers “heroically and successfully repelled the attacks with casualties on the side of the miscreants.” Sagir said that one soldier was wounded, while no death was recorded on the side of the Nigerian military. But MEND’s statement, signed by Jomo Gbomo, claimed it killed over 22 well armed soldiers at Soku Gas Plant and Chevron Platform at Kula, while a major crude trunk pipeline at Nembe creek was blown up at several points. The group said “about 0100 hrs on September 14, 2008, Hurricane Barbarossa commenced with heavily armed fighters in hundreds of war boats filing out from different MEND bases across the Niger Delta in solidarity to carry out destructive and deadly attacks on the oil industry in Rivers State.” It warned that “the operation will continue until the government of Nigeria appreciates that the solution to peace in the Niger Delta is justice, respect and dialogue,” noting that the “military-style bullying belongs to the past 50 years when the Niger Delta people responded only with their mouths, pens and placards. “All international oil and gas loading vessels entering the region are warned to drop anchor in the high sea or divert elsewhere until further notice. Failure to comply is taking a foolhardy risk of attack and destruction of the vessel,” Gbomo summed. “Oil companies are warned to move out their workers within the next 24 hours because a hurricane is about to sweep through oil installations in the entire Niger Delta region," MEND said. Royal Dutch Shell, ExxonMobil, Total, Eni and Chevron are among the numerous oil companies that operate in the restive Niger Delta, the main source of Nigeria's two million barrels per day output. A Shell spokesman in Nigeria said the company did not comment on security matters. However, the Pro- National Conference Organisation (PRONACO), on Sunday condemned the orgy of violence on the Niger Delta region and charged the 40-member Technical Committee on the Niger Delta to be focused and unwavering in the urgent task of laying the ground for the stability and development of the region. PRONACO said that the Niger Delta could be on the verge of recovery if the technical committee was allowed to do its work without distraction, but with utmost concern for the impoverished masses of the region, who deserved urgent attention if the region must survive its present pressure. source:http://www.tribune.com.ng/15092008/news/news1.html |

Obasanjo hates Ige, even in death –Adeyeye By Akin Oyedele Published: Sunday, 14 Sep 2008 The 78th commemorative birthday lecture of the slain former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Chief Bola Ige, again provided another platform for the denunciation of the eight-year rule of former President Olusegun Obasanjo. Skip to next paragraph Photo file Former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Chief Bola Ige The gathering of eminent personalities from the academics, different political divide, as well as associates, followers, friends and family of the late Ige, would attest to his greatness, even in death. Setting the tone for the invectives poured on the Obasanjo‘s administration by speakers at the forum, the guest lecturer, Prof. Sola Adeyeye, said that Obasanjo was one of the detractors of Ige. The President, Nigerian Bar Association, Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN), who also came hard on Obasanjo, described the ex-President as a self-centred leader that could not be dealt with. Blaming the brutal murder of Ige for the present predicament of the Yoruba nation, he said that the late AGF made a mistake by accepting to serve under Obasanjo. He, however, vowed that the NBA would ensure that the murder of Ige, as well as other politically-motivated killings, was not swept under the carpet. Akeredolu said, ”The Bar has a role to play. Ige‘s death should not be consigned to the dustbin of history. We must pursue those that killed him until they are caught. ”The Bar must force the present administration to set up a judicial commission of inquiry into Ige‘s murder as well as other unresolved murders. This country is gradually slipping into a failed state. ”We must come together to rescue this country. The problem we have is that the progressives are not consistent and united. ”Why for instance should the progressives in Oyo State not come together during the governorship election? Why did we have so many candidates among them? That was responsible for what we have on hand.” Even in death, Adeyeye said that Obasanjo never hid his alleged hatred for the former AGF by blaming Ige for the failure of the energy programme of his administration. Out of the four ministers that held sway at the Ministry of Power and Steel during the Presidency of Obasanjo, he said that it was only Ige who served for11 months that was singled out for vilification. In death, he said that Obasanjo knew that Ige could not rise to defend himself; hence he decided to denounce him as a minister who did not know his right hand from his left. In his lecture titled, ”If Bola Ige were alive,” Adeyeye said that Bola Ige could have maintained a studied silence to the tantrums of the former President if alive. Rising in defence of the late Ige, the lecturer maintained that the former President should have corrected within 85 months the lapses that occurred during the 11-month tenure of Ige. Describing Obasanjo‘s presidency as inept and corrupt, Adeyeye asked rhetorically whether it was the late AGF that committed hundreds of billions of naira on road projects without results. In a sarcastic tone, he said that Obasanjo could as well blame the late Ige for his botched and ill-conceived third term agenda on which huge resources, energy, time and emotions were wasted. In a departure from popular belief, he said that the Peoples Democratic Party could still have manipulated the 2003 election in the Yoruba nation if Ige were alive. He stressed that those who allegedly deployed repressive apparatus of the Federal Government to subvert the wishes of the electorate in 2007 were those that lost in previous relatively free and fair elections. But for his death, he said Ige would have been bemused at the cadre of self-styled Awoists who allegedly rigged themselves into power in 2007. Adeyeye said Ige would have been dismayed by the action of the fake Awoists whose party members made the destruction of the statue of Awolowo a priority on assumption of office. He said, ”By now he would have expressed his sympathy for President Umaru Yar‘Adua as another good man who appears destined to fail as President of Nigeria. ”Ige would have been reminding Nigerians that being a good man is not sufficient qualification for leadership of a country. ”He would have cited Alhaji Shehu Shagari as a good man who was a miserable failure as President. source:http://69.64.47.149/Articl.aspx?theartic=Art20080914331832 |
Over 70m Nigerians are illiterate — Official Written by Tordue Salem Monday, 15 September 2008 DR. Kutara Elisha, Director of Inspectorate Division of Federal Ministry of Education, says in Abuja more than 70 million Nigerians are illiterate. Elisha, at the education summit organised by Bwari Area Council in the FCT, noted that school dropouts constituted 22 per cent of that figure. He said that the Federal Government would soon introduce a new curriculum for schools to boost the quality of the products of the nation’s education system. He, however, said that the phasing out of the old curriculum would be a gradual process, while the new one would also be gradually introduced. He called on teachers to rededicate themselves to their profession, adding that efforts were being made to motivate the teachers to enable them to give quality service delivery. “The 6-3-3 program has been dropped and the nine-year primary-to-junior-secondary-school education system is now in place. It will be universal, compulsory and free,” he said. He said that unlike in the past, when certificates were awarded at the end of Primary Six, certificates would now be issued after the completion of the nine-year basic education programme. Earlier, Alhaji Isa Dara, Chairman of the Council, said that the summit was organised to address the declining of standard of education in the area. “Out of 279 candidates who sat for JAMB, between 2005 and 2007, only 50 candidates passed, representing a mere 18 per cent. “This is a great concern for us,’’ he said. source:http://www.vanguardngr.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=16973&Itemid=42 |

They paid a high price for it; in blood. The Abacha must stay campagn were able to organise demonstration in support of Abacha all over the country, except in Yoruba land, were they were thwarted by the raw determination of the people. After the death of Abacha, all the political parties nominate a Yoruba man as their presidential candidate. This has never happen before in the history of Nigeria. Politics is not about having a shop in Onitsha market, its about total sacrifice and determination, which happen to be in short supply among traders. |

QuotaSyste Yorubas? I don't know what to use to qualify them. I have never seen cowards and chameleons like those people. Never to be trusted, going by history. As huge as they are in population and claims to be widely educated, (man power advantage) yet are even afraid more than the Ijaws to go it alone and form their own country and manage what ever they have by themselves. (What are they fearing? You will never know)How would you qualify Ojukwu, that water leaf who ran away before the end of the war only to come back and join NPN after receiving bribe from the shagari administration. Your Ojukwu is a coward and a quitter. He his solely responsible for all the misfortune that has befallen the Ibo people. If he had stayed and fought till the end , he would have been able to negotiate a better settlement for the Ibo. Ewu, tufiakwa. At least people like Pa Adesanya, despite the threat to there life fought till their last breath and their struggle paid off , with Yoruba 8 years presidency rule. The woman then carried the fertilised egg in her for 9 months , feeding, nurture, Maritain and protect. After birth the child depend on her breast milk for survival and she sees him /her through the tender years. All this while the man is just a passive observer. If the child were to be a company , the woman ,by virtue of her contribution would hold the majority share , over 70%. Royal and majestic are the best words to describe his homes in Lagos and Ijebu-Ode. And for those who have been opportuned to have a glimpse into Chief Kuku's Ikoyi residence located on old Waring Road, since renamed after him as Bayo Kuku Road, you'D marvel at the luxury of his taste. Chief Kuku has been around for decades, yet his wealth and energy haven't waned a bit. He can compete favourably with today's emerging billionaires. Otunba Olasubomi Balogun Otunba Subomi Balogun who is regarded as one of the foremost bankers in Nigeria today having established the first indigenous bank, doesn't need introduction. Born in Ijebu-Ode Ogun state, Otunba, as he is fondly called, read law in England and happens to be the first Nigerian to receive special training in Legal Drafting. He is a trained lawyer whose tremendous success in the financial sector has since overshadowed his law profession. In 1982, he founded the First City Merchant Bank (FCMB). After 18 years of unbroken success as a merchant bank, FCMB widened its doors to retail customers in January 2001 and adopted universal banking. The bank has since changed its name to First City Monument Bank and is one of the leading post-consolidation banks in Nigeria today. There is no doubt that today he is a man with plenty of cash. His eye popping edifice in both Lagos and Ijebu-Ode, his home town, further confirm his style and taste as a man of means.
