Family › Re: LETTER TO NIGERIAN PARENTS by blackpanda: 12:54pm On Sep 22, 2011
I Fully agree. Nigerian parents are part of the problem facing our youths today. They encourage laziness in their children, all in the name of showing love (or class). Most parents are also too controling, and find it hard to allow the child to think and experience life for his/her self. How many parents will allow their 18yr old to work in a filling station or at a grocery store or in mr biggs. The mentality they have is that such work is for the less fortunate.
The result- lazy kids with no working ethics whatsoever.

But you are not ur sister. You are not the one that was raped, ur not the one that will carry the child for nine months, or breastfeed the child, or worry about its health or wellbeing. The child may not even bear ur last name.
So dont you think it is wise that the decision shld be left to ur sister?
Family › Re: Can Abortion Ever Be Justified? by blackpanda: 4:25pm On Sep 21, 2011
In most advanced countries, including South Africa, it is the sole prerogative of the mother to choose whether or not to keep the pegnancy.
While yall can keep chatting on the reasons for condoning abortion, the sad fact is that the law can not provide for every single individual situation.
So, in my view, abortion should be left to the mother to decide. Rather, govt can create incentives to disuade pple from unnecessary abortion. E.g in SA, mothers benefit from child welfare scheme.
On the other hand, Nigeria shld also allow abortion, especially as a means of controlling our population explosion!

With regards to fighting corruption, GEJ's administration is just a BIG FAT JOKE!
Whatever happened to the case against Dimeji Bankole? Instead of allowing the law to run its course, he quickly stifled the investigation and instructed his AG to curtail the power of the EFCC to try public officials. Now EFCC is nothing but a toothless bull dog against corrupt public servants. Without support from the minister (by implication GEJ), Waziri can do nothing. Infact, it is only the minister that can prosecute public officials that have stolen funds.
So when the minister loots, i'll like to see how he will be made to face the law, mtscheeew, nonsense!

Family › Re: For The Ladies: Moving Out Of Your Parent's House, Yay Or Nay? by blackpanda: 7:32am On Sep 16, 2011
It is natural for every parent to want to protect their child for as long as possible. Looking at it from ur parents point of view, i can understand their concerns and the desire to want to constantly monitor you. This type of upbringing is quite peculiar to most cultures.
But the reality is that if you feel it is time to be on your own and can cope independently with the outside world, then u have to convince ur parents and make them see reasons why u must be allowed to start living ur own life.
If they resist, i suggest u persuade them by striking a compromise. Promise them u will visit often and will constantly keep in touch with them.
The truth is that no matter how old u are, u will always remain a child in the eyes of ur parents. Parents just have that instinct to be protective, especially in today's society. But to allow them to deprive u of ur independence is like putting ur entire future in their hands. Which is not adviceable. You have to explore and see the world for urself, have ur own experiences and enjoy life.
Just engage them in conversation and try to convince them. Also getting a flat mate is a welcome idea. Find someone that they can trust and who is dependable.
Goodluck

Family › Re: Why Cant A Lady Return To Her Parent's House After A Fight With Her Husband? by blackpanda: 10:54am On Sep 08, 2011
i was very interested when i read this blog because i am currently doing a research on women's rights in africa.
In my humble view, i believe one of the chief reasons why women can not go back to their parents houses, and also why the parents are often unwilling to accept the daughtser, stems from the issue of payment of bride price. Bride price in African culture more or less refers to the girl/lady being sold off to her husband, for some form of benefit or the other. Once sold, it becomes difficult for the product to be returned. (pls pardon my harsh language).
This system is also linked to the fact that in African culture, women are regarded as second class. A father would normally rejoice at the birth of a son, but if he gets a daughter it is usually with an air of dissappointment of remote tolerance. Africans put a high price on men over women. And what is worse is that even women have come to accept their own fate as "normal".
so, to answer the question, in traditional african society, a woman who has been abused by her husband can not run back to her own family home because that would open her family to public ridicule and disgrace.
However, the situation may be different in modern families, where both parents of the bride are well educated and exposed to other civilisations.
there is currently an international outcry to ban the payment of bride price as it leads to the discrimination, torture and unfair treatment of women.

The minister is right. Terrorism can not be fought by govt alone, we all need to join hands together.
i see most of us are quick to point accusing fingers at govt officials wen things go wrong, because in our mentality we assume govt must do everything alone.
The minister, sadly, can not be evrywhere at everytime. Govt requires our assistance in the form of intelligence in order to fish out these evil doers.
A succesful nation is not built by a committed govt alone, citizens must also play their part.
How many of us really pay taxes? How many of us have any regards for public utilities? How many of us potray the country outside as a great nation.
its always easier to criticise than to act.
Think today of what you can do to make the nation a better place. Stop waiting for govt all the time.

Its true sha. What is good for the goose should also be good for the gander. Women are fighting for equal rights, but the forget that equal rights comes with equal responsibilities. Couples should exchange engagement gifts and not one slavishly waiting for the other to shower him/her with gifts.
if u dont give ur man any material gift, then be ready to CONSTANTLY supply him with the immaterial (i.e sex, food, washing his clothes, cleaning the house etc)

Family › Our Parents Have Failed Us ! by blackpanda(op): 2:04pm On Aug 27, 2011
There was a time when people still had good morals, when to steal or even look at what does not belong to you was a grave crime upon which parents never failed to exercise appropriate disciplinary measures. There was a time when parents preached not only the love of your fellow brother but also the supremacy of national interest. When they taugt us to speak in our mother tongue and to be proud to be called nigerians.
There was a time when going to farm was not seen as being poverty stricken and parents emphasized the importance of hardwork and integrity. If you told my great grand father that my grand father was a thief, he would vouch for him with the last drop of his blood because he was 100% sure of the kind of good morals he had instilled in his son!

But today, what do we have? Parents assist their kids to cheat in exams. How many of us can still speak in our native dialect? When you become a "public servant" the first person to knock on ur door will be ur father, demanding that u build a house in the village and loot as much public funds as you possibly can. The worst part is that the cycle continues, each generation keeps teaching the next how to be corrupt. Infact, we are at a point now, where if u decide to be clean, people will think you have gone mad or will start calling you "enemy of progress"- looking for ways to plot your downfall.
its such a pity. Everyone is busy blaming government for corruption, but in actual fact there is something fundamentally wrong with our roots!
The dream every graduate has these days is to either work in oil company or enter government and steal (with most preferring the latter).

If we are ever to get out of this pit of woes, we must retrace our foot steps. And it all starts from the home, not the government.

I ALIGN MY THOTS WITH UR REASONING. WE SHOULD NOT ALWAYS BLAME THE WEST FOR OUR DOWNFALL. THE FACT IS, WITH ALL THE RICHES IN AFRICA, WOT HAVE WE REALLY ACHIEVED FOR OURSELVES? IF GHADAFI IS SO RIGHTEOUS, HE SHOULD HAVE FOUND A WAY TO TACKLE THE WIT OF THE WEST BY SIMPLY AND QUEITLY EXITING THE SEAT OF POWER, AND THEN ALLOWING ONE OF HIS DISCIPLES TO TAKE THE REINS. (LIKE WOT OBJ DID) INSTEAD HE CHOSE TO WAGE A USELESS WAR AGAINST WESTERN FORCES, WHOM HE KNOWS WILL EVENTUALLY OVER POWER HIM. I FEAR THIS WAR IN LIBYA MAY END UP TEARING THE CONTINENT FURTHER APART.
SUCH A SHAME!

The basic reason why Africans are seen as fools. Asians are progressing you guys keep spitting out what you don't know. Do you think Nigeria and Libya oil reserve added together is as huge as that of Norway or even Canada? What happened in the case of Cote D'ivoire, Tunisia, Egypt, do they supply USA oil. Go and examine your brain guys you must be hallucinating.

Getting rid of terrorism has now become a lawless act because you think the West is always about your downfall. Has Africans use their heads to develop the continent? Even SA that is acting as the giant what has it got to offer for the development Africa?(The development there is the handwork of the white man - you can't escape from their help).

For somebody to have called Gaddafi a strong man said it all. A man who sponsored terrorism, several coupe in West Africa and Central Africa only to be seen here as hero, tells how unreasonable most views about West by miserable Africans are. Fold your hands and keep crying for aid. The worst case scenario is in Somalia and more are still yet to come while Asia progresses - for you guys, it's also the handwork of the West. Stop blaming the west for your failure. The Libyan leader has always been a tyrant who always knew that Africans are easy prey and he did all it could to buy their support only to the detriment of his people. I think some factions of Libyans are angry with some Africans - from what I saw on the news - they said some Africans are serving the interest of Gaddafi as mercenaries.

Take some pills man and wake up to reality!

Well, i am assuming u are a nigerian. So before you begin to chant your obvious disdain for your country, ask your self, How many other countries are wholly dependent on oil like nigeria? Are you prepared to face reciprocal sanctions from the US, what with your population of over a hundred million mouths to feed?
And how dare you question nigeria's peace efforts in African countries, which is very much widely known and commended by the entire international community? Maybe if you had loved ones who had sacrificed their lives to end the war in these countries then you would appreciate what i am saying.
And with the issue of no fly zone, i am shocked at ur level of daftness. You obviously have never experienced war before. Pple like just sit in the comfort of their homes typing rubbish online. We are talking of hundreds of civilian lives perishing, and you busy raising issuing of no fly zone. Today the pple of libya are jubiliating at their final freedom after 42yrs, and people like you are, yet again quick to chastise international efforts in ensuring such freedom.

Maybe u should take some time to pay a visit to one of these waring countries, then you will understand the kind of sacrifice we made, and are still making as a country.
You think the title of "Giant of Africa" is for nothing? Nigeria has proved itself time and time again as a force to be reckoned with within the African continent.
So please try and be patroitic for once!

cap28:
this assistance that you are talking about - how come it did not extend to libya or ivory coast ?

who voted in favour of the no flyzone over libya?

who assisted the north atlantic terrorist organisation with the invasion of two african nations?

nigeria is one of the most cowardly nations in africa - in the 1970s opec imposed an oil embargo on america which almost lead to the collapse of the US economy - nigeria under gowon was the only oil producing country which agreed to continue exporting oil to america - instead of forming an alliance with their fellow oil exporting nations they submissively gave in to their oppressors.

so i dont know where you are getting this your information about nigeria playing big brother to the rest of africa from.

ZIM DRILL:
dont confuse people

nigeria never assisted south africa in financial aid during apatheid, yes assisted ANC or political parties in  the fight of democracy

learn to separate SA and ANC or other parties

Vorster's attitude towards other African countries was not so much a modification of strategy as a continuance of Verwoerd's approach. Vorster's forerunner had already become aware of the fact that cordial dealings with as many black states as possible was of paramount importance. As more and more African states acquired statehood from their colonial rulers, bitterness towards South African apatrheid system increased. If South Africa did not wish to become completely cut off from the rest of the African continent, she had to sustain gracious associations with it, starting, of course, with mutual economic support. Vorster persisted with this strategy and built good relationships with a number of independent African states.
In 1967, Vorster proffered technological and fiscal counsel gratis to any African state prepared to receive it, asserting that absolutely no political strings were attached. He gave great attention to financial facets, aware of the fact that many African states were very run-down and would require financial aid in spite of their rebuffing of South Africa's racial principles. Malawi and Lesotho were the first countries to enter discussions with the NP government. Angola and Mozambique soon followed.
One of the first steps to take in initiating dealings was to convene with the heads of these African countries. Here Vorster worked decidedly contrary to Verwoerd's policies. Where Verwoerd had declined to get together and engage in dialogue with such leaders as Abubakar Tafawa Balewa of Nigeria in 1962 and Kenneth Kaunda of Zambia in 1964, Vorster, in 1966, met with the heads of the states of Lesotho, Swaziland and Botswana. There was still mutual suspiciousness, however, particularly after Vorster's denunciation of the Lusaka Manifesto in 1969. Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland stayed candid critics of apartheid, but they hinged on South Africa's economic aid. This was inclusive of pecuniary credit and the fact that many natives from these states worked the South African mines.
Malawi was the first country not on South African borders to accept South African aid. She identified the monetary benefits of such a deal, for there were also many Malawians working in South African mines. In 1967, the two states delineated their political and economic relations, and, in 1969, Malawi became the only country at the assembly which did not sign the Lusaka Manifesto. In 1970, Malawian President Hastings Banda made his first and most successful official stopover in South Africa.
Associations with Mozambique followed suit and were sustained after that country won its sovereignty in 1975. Angola was also granted South African loans. Other countries which formed relationships with South Africa were Liberia, the Ivory Coast, Madagascar, Mauritius, Gabon, Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo), Ghana and the Central African Republic. These African states slammed apartheid (more than ever after South Africa's denunciation of the Lusaka Manifesto), but fiscal reliance on South Africa, together with fear of her armed potency, resulted in their forming the aforementioned ties.

I am filled with deep pity, regret and anger on how Nigerians abroad, and indeed the entire country are being treated by other African Nations. Its as if our govt derives pleasure in playing 'mugun' to them. Whenever any African country is in trouble, the first country to the rescue is usually Nigeria- we did it in liberia, in sierra leone, in sudan and especially in South Africa. Yet, immediately these countries have their problems resolved, they quickly find all means of ensuring that our efforts are blotted out of history, and then turn around to show hate, distrust and animosity towards us.
i have witnesse the way Nigerians in South Africa are being treated, despite the fact that one of the reasons they are enjoying democracy today is because of the Nigerian govt's aid and assistance during the apartheid regime. Nigeria aided them heavily with finance, political assistance, granted more than 300 passports to people fleeing and even free education to them. Yet today, you need to see how the South African govt continues to spit on Nigerians, from even their embassy here. Similar stories are being faced by our citizens in other part of the continent.
Its like wenever they are in trouble, then they remember that somewhre in the continent lies "the mesiah", but as soon as the going gets smooth, they quickly tag us as 'criminals' afterall.
But who is really to blame in all this? It is both the Nigerian govt and its citizens, in my own opinion. They way we tarnish our image before the world wherever we go is so disheartening. I am currently in Sa, and i can tell that the level of criminal activities here is hundred times worse than that of Nigeria. In nigeria, our biggest problem is simply corruption and greed. But in SA, people are virtually being murdered on a daily basis, the cases of rape are astronomical, lets not even venture into hate crimes, theft and vandalism! But inspite of these, you will rarely hear the average south african speaking ill of the country. Their news agencies have mastered the art of sugar-coating the ills of the society, while at the same time blowing nigeria's trumpet of attrocities.Anyone who is caught doing anything criminal here, quickly pushes the blame to "a nigerian". A south african woman was caught using stolen credit card few weeks ago, and her only defence was "a nigerian" gave it to me. our govt must wake up and stop wasting our resources on these ungrateful and useless countries!

This is so pathetic! Our government must wake up and stop spending our limited resources on these useless countries!

pls there is no basis for comparison. Permit me to generalise here- Nigeria is not churning out graduates, but only liabilities. If u ask a typical graduate in Nigeria what his/her hopes for the future are, u will normally hear "I want to work in oil company!". Question: how many oil companies are there? And how many spaces to cater for the millions of graduates coming out from our universities evry year.
On the other hand, education abroad goes further than ensuring the student is able to make a future living, it encourages personal contribution to society. This is why they often make room for permanent residency for students who have something substantial to contribute in most western countries.
Wen it comes to research facilities, mode of lecture, syllabus, teachers, practical training, etc. There simply is no basis for comparison at all. In all the years of our university's existence, how many things can u point to that has been a product of university research?! Meanwhile in the US and Europe, most of the world's breakthroughs are discovered in the four walls of the university.
The point is that the Nigerian university is simply a place to while away time, and collect as much pocket money as u can frm ur parents, before u join the long queue of unemployment in the real world !!

I totally support it
The law may seem dumb just reading it here, -but trust me, if you have ever spent a night in police cell for a crime you did not commit then u will understand the need for this protection
The fact is that our police usually have little or no training, coupled with the fact that they dont need any form of warrant to arrest or detain any person (an initiative borrowed from our dictatorship govt), it's obvious that the common man is prone to being humiliated and abused both psychologically and physically.
The nigerian police has no sense of procedure. And what is worse is that our judicial system is often too lax to tackle the problems. We often forget that our constitution declares all persons innocent until proven otherwise.
For instance, even look at the mere mention of this law, most of the posters have already assumed that the person fleeing is guilty. We seem to forget the incessant police extra judicial killings that are being reported in the news everyday.
If u have ever been humiliated by the police at any checkpoint, then you will understand the need to at least have some form of protection!
