FamilyRe: Is using The Bible As A Moral Guide To Raise A Child Harmful? by Blonchilli(m): 7:48pm On May 12, 2017
Trudax:
I am not questioning the validity of anyone's religious beliefs, I am just examining the act of using the bible as a guide to instill moral values in a child through reading the texts to the child and allowing the child access to it.

I don't think the bible is the best foundation for developing a child's morality. Like I said in my thread title, I think it's dangerously harmful.

Now I am not saying the bible isn't an efficient mechanism to imbue good moral values in a child, I am just saying it's not the best and it's also not the most efficient.

First of all, the bible is very instructive. It dishes out morality on the table of transcendent authority. It tells you that you must do something because god wants you to. This is also what parents tell their kids. They tell them not to steal or lie because god forbids them to lie. I believe it's more effective when a child does something because he understands the reason for doing that thing, than when he does that thing because he's been commanded by an invincible being not to do that thing.

Secondly, I think introducing a child to the notion of hell is terribly bad. This could have devastatingly harmful effects on the mind of the child. Imagine the mental trauma a child could go through when he contemplates the possibility of going to hell for committing even the smallest of crimes.

Thirdly, the bible is replete with stories that purport to espouse moral values, but actually convey the opposite of progressive moral values.
Example is the story of Abraham and Isaac. What moral value does this convey besides the ethics of committing murder? How about the story of Lot's wife? I don't see what else it can teach a child besides imbuing the child with a maddening amount of fear and crippling submission to every ordinance of God, despite what those ordinances are.

Finally, in my opinion exposing children to all the death and killing in the bible, at a young age, can have devastatingly bad effects on their mental and moral growth.
Bro don't waste your time. Choose whatever material or book you wish to raise your child with. Moral objectivity is the best. The blind religious fools on this page are same people who walk on the street and has morally deluded preachers for gods. Religion is not entirely wrong but using it as a tool to raise and manipulate people is what is wrong. Look at how they swarm and attack you like ants around sugar. Religion is the bane of the poor and the rich only use it to control the masses. Please raise your child to be able to judge what's right or wrong without having to fear for hell or being scolded by a priest who does much worse. And for the guy arguing earlier by insulting you, can't you see Nigerians can't give any argument without attacking your personality? Peace

My brother-in-law was extremely lucky today. During the Manchester United vs Chelsea match Nepa took light and we decided to turn on the generator. We didn't know a green snake was under the generator and slithered in between my brother-in-law's legs. We were able to kill it before it crawled into the house. The tile made it impossible for it to crawl faster. After killing the snake we proceeded to enjoy the match as we officially welcomed Conte to the theatre of dreams grin grin

Your dad might have issues but the real issue I can deduce here is that you are a fooolish young man. Why? see the the parts I emboldened, do you expect you and your ELDER brother to be at the same level? Instead of breaking his nose if you hit his neck and he dies will you tell the judge your father caused it? Why cant you focus this energy you have into your studies so you can achieve something for yourself? The fact that you even had the audacity to raise a hand against your elder brother shows the type of person you are and maybe you really deserve how your father treats you.
Hitting his elder brother was wrong, infact hitting your brother/sister irrespective of age difference is wrong but the father is to blame for this. Who compares a Toyata camry with a Rolls Royce. One has gone far in life and the other is barely starting. Parent like that turn brothers to enemies

Recently I got into a fight with my elder brother..nd I broke his nose..it was a very bad thing for me ..but its jst d end product of wat my dad has been planting inside of me

It all started THUS

My dad is a master comparer ..wen we wer younger ...
he wuld compare us (me nd my brothers) to anyone he deems fit even if dat someone is worst Dan us..

.comparisons like

*--.why are we not leading d youth choir in our church like d pastor's son
*--why can't i take d first position in my class like Camoru Omo Iya alata
*-- why cant I win d scholarship like lagbaja even if my school is not offering any

I could remember last two years..a relative came visiting..dis guy recently came back from Obodo oyibo..nd he was forming all single nd holy..

here comes my dad again..comparing us to him..saying d guy has gone to a foreign land nd he was successful all because he was holy nd he abstained from women..

nd all we do here is think and gist about women(we are 6 boys)..we didn't take it lightly wit him..but we let it slide.

.only to get invited to a party by dis holy obodo oyibo guy..nd we met him rocking d biggest ukwu we've ever seen..Chai!!..God punish devil

Back to my main reason for writing dis..
My dad ridiculed me so much with my brothers success.. he wuld use every opportunity to compare me nd him

my brother is a graduate nd works for a big tech company.. while i'm still a 300level student

The comparison got so bad I started hating my brother..not because he's already successful Dan me...but my dad rubs it on my face always..like I should jst graduate sharp sharp nd start working

long story short.... we fought nd I broke his nose
NOW MY QUESTION IS
I know my dad wants to motivate us with d comparisons
But is it ideal to motivate someone( brother.. friend..anyone) by comparing him to another person..

nd if ur a victim like me..talk ur story
It's sad when parents do that. Mine was more terrible. The best thing to do is ignore and apologise. Taking actions could lead to unnecessary fights. Mine got me kicked out from my parents house when if you look at it from a better perspective I should be the one they compare to. But I believe everybody has his/her own fate and trying too force someone to be like the other becomes disastrous. Apologise to your family and avoid such scenario by any mean necessary. They're family and no matter where you run to fate will make you need them

The serious problem is you are not a Christian. This white lady is a witch. A true Christian can discern this in her manner of dress and the symbols in her tatoos. If your mind is canal you cannot see the evil in her heart. She is sheltering sheltering Satans children and turning the minds of African people away from righteousness. She is a deceiver.

When you see a photo of this woman never look at her eyes. And never look at your own reflection immediately after. Evil will befall you and your family within one hour. She bad for Nigeria and Nigerians.

I can't imagine you're saying something like this? That's why we are backward! We can't even support ourselves against our government! In Britain a young man was paid 20 million pounds because of a botched surgery! If this happens in the us the government will not only pay an enormous fee but heads will roll! Because you have access to cheap data you're here talking rubbish! If it's your sister/daughter/wife will you spill this rubbish? Yet we complain of oppresion when there are mentally unstable people like you roaming the streets and planning on raising kids! People that know better will know that the money is too small sef! They should've start from 1billion because even if the government pays it will be half the price! My friend run back to your mummy's womb

What constitutes 'practicing homosexuality'?
Up until the 80s homosexuality was seen as a mental disorder. You do know they're are homosexual today who are into it just because they want to not because they're not sexually compact able with the opposite sex

Most people are heterosexual, therefore most the influences that we absorb as children are heterosexual.

But even then, you cannot make someone engage in homosexual activity unless that is their proclivity.

I've had internet access for over 20 years, never once have I ever wanted to watch homosexual porn.
You're correct but I've seen young kids caught practising homosexuality and their reasons was they saw it on TV

That's funny but I don't think you can make anyone who isn't already gay want to try gay sex.

For a heterosexual it just isn't appealing.
About 100 percent of the things we assume right is because society and norm made it so. Remember the stories of those children raised by animals? Some couldn't adapt to society again and died while some ran back to the jungle! Kids would always try things out so nothing stops them from trying gay porn if they stumble on it on the internet

Mine was worse when i was in K.G 3 I touched females private part like(I "Fingered"wink if you know what that means, but I didn't do it willingly, someone led me to do it.
What is more shocking is that this kid that led me(partner in crime)

Had seen that act performed b4 to someone, that's how he was able to do the same to someone else!!!
The memory still haunts me!!
If you had older ones or parents that just don't warn you about these things but tells you how it works all these wouldn't have happened. I don't need to tell you what happened after seeing my father's playboy magazine. As a kid then barely 10 I had a lot of female friends that were ready to 'try it out'. This is the best way to protect our kids rather than try and hide it and when they discover it the result could be disastrous! Your kids could pick up your phone and stumble on gay porn and I don't need to tell you how kids like to explore

Guy are you serious?

Chai why are some parents careless na,shuoo!!!
I swear bro! I got exposed to a lot of things that shouldn't be at a very young age so if the school are teaching them sex education then it's a bold and good step. Most parents especially Nigerians don't have the time and would scold their kids if they ask questions. The best we can do is when our kids come home we ask them questions and try to explain better because they will be other kids or worse perverted teachers who would try to take advantage

You cannot stop children learning about sex, it's how we all got here.

What you can do is gradually introduce them to the biological facts of life and to encourage a healthy approach to sex. Making sex taboo is foolish and destructive. It's why AIDS/HIV and other venereal diseases are able to take hold.
Best comment on this topic. Nigeria is where it is because we became hypocrite. When was the last time Ahmed or the op had a matured conversation with his son/daughter about sex? The school's helping you and you're complaining. I know a lot of my friends that got exposed to sex by stumbling on VHS sex tape or magazine by their parents, that's up to 20 years now. I too first started knowing anything about sex when I discovered my father's playboy magazine and sex magazine!!! I learnt sex from the street not from my parents or school. I don't think the school will completely tell a kid to start having sex without understanding it should be between to people that want it and with protection. It could reduce unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted disease!!! If they're adding sexual education in the curriculum then they have the go ahead! Most parents are either to busy or feel it's an abomination to talk about it with their kids, not until their daughters get pregnant or worse get infected by Aids
