Their insurer will pay the families of the deceased staff x3 of their annual salary as death benefit. That is the standard for any company that has group life insurance on their employees.

However, due to the circumstances of their death, the families of the deceased should approach the companies and demand further compensation. Hopefully the company will do something extra for them from the company's purse.

The official death toll has now increased to 10. FIRS lost 4 employees while United Capital(A subsidiary of UBA group) lost 6 employees.

They don't necessarily need to seal the building . As it stands the building cannot be put to use and it will require some time for them to put it back into shape. So, by the time the dust settles down they will renovate the building and continue its usage.

Even if they announce sealing of the building, it won't take them more than few weeks or months before they reopen it. They will claim integrity test has been done on the building and the building is fine but only requires renovation.

Unfortunately, we are in Nigeria. Even if they decide to go to court, before the judge hear the case and pronounce judgement it may take more than one year. Then the bank can decide to appeal the judgement if it doesn't favour them and that one will take another long period. The bank can still disagree with the appeal court verdict and go to Supreme court.

Before the whole circus ends, the employees and their families would've been frustrated sef . We don get court case before in our family fighting for an injustice done to our parents and I know how exhausting the court process was on all of us. Even me wey no dey follow them go court, I suffered exhaustion too.

With the personality of Tony Elumelu, I doubt if the employees will get fair judgement. As it stands, they are most likely at the mercy of whatever financial compensation the bank decides to award to them.

It's just so sad.

One woman called in on a radio program I was listening to earlier this morning; she said they went to visit a family friend who lost his wife in the incident. The deceased wife drove her husband to the airport in the morning for him to catch his flight to Abuja after which she went to work at Afriland towers.

The man was called in Abuja that there was fire in his wife's office, so he had to rush down back to Lagos. He was directed to UBA head office where the news was later broken to him that his wife had died in the incident. The woman left behind 2 kids and her husband. She said the husband is still in shock till now .

The caller claimed the building had emergency exit but that it had been rented out to another tenant.
