Na that time the HODs secretaries dey play God. Your class governor can collate the whole class's course forms and exam dockets for submission and the HOD secretary will ask for bribe before signing. If you happen to be indisposed and didn't go to school that day, Ur own bribe might be x4 because you have to go relate with the secretary on an individual basis.

When i was in university my dad admonished me not to stand out [don't be a fine boy].I took my daughter to unilag for an exam on Saturday and i was telling her the exact same thing. Don't stand out. don't let any bad belle /frustrated lecturer or staff pick you as an outlet for their bitterness.

UNILAG is actually a good school with most of their lecturers taking advantage of the fact that they are in Lagos to make the best out of life for themselves. Most of their lecturers are not as frustrated as lecturers of other public institutions.

UNILAG lecturers dey get good rapport with their students wella. Most of them are exposed, they've gone abroad to do one or two courses and they see how things work over there. And dem dey encourage their students to strive hard to make good grades because of the enermous opportunities made available by their alumni association and even scholarship opportunities they gatekeep for academically bright students. That's why it's easy to come across profile of UNILAG graduates working with J.P Morgan, Bank of America, Google, etc.

Nigerians don't drink responsibly from the well of power. That is why most (including the freedom fighters and activists) become power drunk when they are in any position of authority/power. There is an oppression codon in the Nigerian genome.

The thing is I've met nice lecturers, courteous bank tellers and doctors. I can't label all of them as having bloated egos.

You see non-teaching staff, most of the one's I've interacted with are just a mess; right from my secondary school days to university. Personally, I feel their callousness stems out of inferiority complex.

Like I said earlier I am not making excuse for the lady because I had my fair share of issues with non-teaching staff in departmental & faculty offices while I was in School , but we can both agree she's a typical short tempered Nigerian who gets angry easily because "you dey carry her play". Doing guess work over something u are not sure of in that environment is a No No; it is a recipe for u to get the lady all livid.

Maybe because personally as a person I am used to saying things I know and will tell u "I don't know" when I am not sure of something......I don't see reason why u should be doing guess work on top wetin u no dey sure of. Right from young age if a teacher ask a question and I don't know the answer I will just say I don't know it. I always get amused when I see people making wild guesses that are way off the mark. So maybe that's why I think he should've just told the lady he can't remember and let's see what would've happened instead.

Nobody forced them to join the Nigerian military, they knew the pay/renumeration is poor before joining, so if the poor renumeration is messing with their mental health, shouldn't they either resign from the military or take it up with their superiors?

Remembered when i was meant to collect one receipt like that in my year 1.
The lady that was in the office with the computer where I was meant to collect the receipt, after I came there, I sat down there for like 1hour waiting, this lady was gisting with her colleagues instead of attending to me.
After the gist, it was time to attend to me

He asked me the date I paid the money so she could print the receipt.

This ladies office is in charge of those paying for loss of receipt.
Actually I have loss my receipt , so I have to pay for loss of receipt so I would be issued a new receipt covering the one I lost.

Now this lady asked me the date I payed the money, I couldn't remember the date, I called one date like that, the lady inputted the date and my name didn't show, she asked me again what date it was, I guessed again and this time it was wrong again.

This lady shouted at me to leave her office, that shed call the security on me.
As per year 1 student, I started begging, but all my begging fail on deaf ears

After leaving her office and hanged around the premises for like 3-4 hours, she came out and saw me,
Then told me to come inside, as I came inside, she asked me my name, I told her and she inputted my name in the search field and book, my details appeared

It now downed on me that she could have used the search feature all along but she decided to flex power ..

That's one in mamlny scenarios..

The difference is the police and soldiers has access to guns and those ones doesn't

I'm not making excuse for the lady's harsh behaviour towards you, but I think you should've been truthful enough to tell her you can't remember the date of payment. If you had done that, she would've used the name to search instead of date of payment.

She probably got pissed that you allowed her search 2 wrong dates when you are not sure of those two dates from onset.

That being said, I think non teaching staff of public secondary schools and public owned universities have this over bloated ego that always makes them want to oppress students at the slightest opportunity.

In the last one to two months I've been seeing social media content of Nigerians and other nationals who joined American army as regular soldiers (not commissioned officers o). They document their journey how they bought their own house for rentals within 2 years of joining the US Army.

How many Nigerian soldiers who are not commissioned officers can buy a property from their legit earnings within 10 years of serving in the military? I mean buying houses with their earnings not proceeds from ekelebe duty, bunkering or any other illegal jobs.

The US Army has quality free Healthcare available to active soldiers. Do you have that in Nigeria?

You see there's a whole lot that can mess up with the mental health of a soldier which is not being addressed in Nigeria. So I don't see why you should be comparing the Nigerian soldiers to their US counterparts

Most times when a soldier likes to make trouble, it is the personality of the soldier shining through. Unfortunately for the public, when a soldier makes trouble and he's about to be overwhelmed by the trouble he caused, espirits-de-corps will make fellow soldiers join him so he doesn't get disgraced. Let me share a recent experience I observed.

Early August I was in PH for official assignment and I happen to be in a security convoy with some Nigerians and some expatriates. Our Lead vehicle is a military hilux that has about 6 soldiers on board. The escort coordinator was sat in the vehicle I was in (Which followed closely behind the lead military hilux).

There's a particular soldier in the lead military vehicle that would always jump down at junctions with traffic bottlenecks and be fighting with either a 3rd party truck driver or whipping a PH keke guy. The guy jumps down at every opportunity to "deal " with "bloody civilians". Now, the thing is the escort coordinator is always pissed by this particular soldier's action. The escort coordinator will always speak to the driver of the lead military hilux on walkie to call the overzealous soldier to order.

I understand the escort coordinator's concern tho; In our vehicle we have 2 Germans and one American whom you don't want their memory of Nigeria to be of soldiers whipping other road users just for them to get to their destination early.....But those of us who are Nigerians also understood that some of the truck drivers, keke riders and korope drivers are goat that won't do the right thing till they are either whipped or viciously treated like animals.

The escort coordinator made a statement which resonated with we the Nigerians in the vehicle. He said "When these boys don spend like 1 to 2 years in Sambisa forest fighting terrorists, it is difficult for them to adjust when they are back amongst ordinary civilians"

Personally, I think that particular soldier that was always jumping down is a very aggressive person with anger issue. I also think posting those guys back into the society after over a year at the war front (without any proper evaluation of their mental well-being) is a danger to the society nobody is talking about. The guy has a loaded rifle that he points at Keke guys before whipping them; what if those ones say the "wrong word" and he pulls his trigger ?

My mum says this too. She said all the time she's travelled to Ibadan, she always admires how outspoken the drivers there are especially when they see any uniform personnel board their vehicle . The drivers would bend their inner mirror starting at the passengers at the back and would say it loud and clear in Yoruba : " All passengers should come in with their exact fare with no exception. I repeat all passengers should enter with their change o. No be government dey fuel this vehicle o "

She said almost all the time the uniform personnel will always pay without making any fuss. The ones that don't will get embarrassed and cussed at.

It's always a culture shock for her anytime she sees this happen

It took hues and cries of the citizens in the last 3 to 4 months for Sanwoolu to start promising deployment of 150 units of compactor truck.

Guess what the government prioritized in Lagos State 2026 ? N20.6 billion for House of assembly members vehicle, N212 million for just 20 office tables and chairs, N4.5 billion for just 40 units of 50kva generator, N4.2 billion for the office of Deputy governor, and other frivolous spendings that do not directly solve any problem of the state.

Except you are benefiting from the current state of things, I sincerely don't see any reason why you should be making excuse for the government. The government actually owes us accountability as citizens, at least if not everybody those of us who pay our taxes deserve better bro.
