NERC.

If Cadbury is in Band A and you increase their tariff by 300%, the price of Bournvita will go up and those in Band Z where there is no transformer will buy at the increased price.

If they buy at higher price, they are the ones paying the 300% increase, not the manufacturer who you want to tax.

If consumers don't have the purchasing power to buy at the new rate, Cadbury will close down.

If Cadbury close down and others too follow, unemployment will increase.

If unemployment increases, insecurity will take a jump.

If insecurity jumps, the money you thought you're making will be diverted to security and it won't be enough.

That is why US, UK, France, Germany and all developed economy support their factories with billions invested in power subsidy.

Izzou have u heard latest about the coastal highway ?

So Lagos state has been issuing notice to people with properties along the corridor where the road is to pass and Landmark resorts has been given a quit notice notifying him that the $200m resort will be demolished .

The man has come out to plead with the government to reroute about 1.5km out of the 700km so the property won't be destroyed . He mentioned how he got the land in 2007 long before there was any plan to construct any coastal highway so it's not as if he bought a land knowing fully well the government will demolish it one day.

The business employs 4000 Nigerians directly and 12,000 indirectly . Even if FG gives him compensation for demolishing his property ( which I doubt they will ) ; what happens to those people working for the company that are about to join the ever growing unemployed pool in the country ?

And I don't know about where you live, but the nepa officials in the places I live respect themselves. What I mean is that any month that the power supply is extremely bad, they don't bother coming to ask for money.
grin grin

Now this explains ur stand on this whole issue, u guys have things easy over there.

Here in Lagos, if ur transformer gets faulty and NEPA take it away for repairs for let's say 6 months, for those 6 months u will get regular estimated billing which u are expected to pay. If u don't pay, when ur transformer is back and u want to start enjoying light they will come to disconnect ur light. U will be forced to pay the crazy bill in the long run or resort to bribing NEPA officials.

In fact let me tell u about the area where I grew up. Not far from our house , there's a building that has always been empty. I never saw the owners of that building until I was teen . My parents said before I was born the owners of that building travelled abroad but they kept the building with their properties in it intact without anybody living in the house

Despite knowing nobody lives in the house, NEPA kept on dumping estimated billing on them. Meanwhile, NEPA had long disconnected their light o. When those people came to Nigeria, they had to go to NEPA make a deal to pay a substantial part of the crazy estimated bill over the years before their light was reconnected. The family stayed for less than 6 months before they travelled back . Then NEPA continued their nonsense.

Estimated billing passes the cost of energy theft to the consumers.

The transformer has a meter. what the discos do is they calculate consumed power, deduct it from metered power and spread the difference among those without meters.

Estimated bills are always dubious
Estimated billing is just a lazy attempt at cutting Discos' losses on energy theft. If the Discos are serious, they should provide meters and watch their business prosper.

Even if they're not getting 20hours/day light, the prices seems fair to me.

People want nepa to give them 24hours/day light for peanuts.. If you run generator 24hours/day for a month body go tell you.

Even if the light is for only 10 hours, it'll still be far cheaper compared to when you run your gen for same 10 hours with fuel or Diesel.
See ehn, Let the Discos meter everyone and then charge tariff that reflects how often they supply electricity. U will be surprised that people will have no choice but to pay.

I know people who live in areas where they struggle to have 4 hours light daily and yet NEPA always give them crazy estimated bills regularly.

Hmm
Be careful before u receive fine wey fit don reach N1m by the time u want to renew ur vehicle license grin. I read they installed speed camera on the bridge and the speed limit is 80km/hr

The Federal Controller of Works, Lagos, Mrs Olukorede Keisha, announced the unofficial re-opening of the bridge on Thursday, in Lagos. She said that the speed limit was being done in conjunction with the Federal Road Safety Corps.

The Federal Government had on Jan. 9 begun comprehensive rehabilitation on the bridge due to several failed portions on it.

She disclosed that the speed cameras would be displayed conspicuously at the median to capture motorists who would exceed the limit.

She explained that anyone caught exceeding the speed limit would not face immediate penalties on the spot.

Keisha said, “Today we are fixing the speed limits. It is in conjunction with the Federal Road Safety Corps and they are on the bridge now doing that.

“The speed limit has been designed to be 80km/per hour. So, if you speed past 80km in the next few weeks, your honourable Commissioner will have you to contend with. “And at the renewal of your vehicle license, you will be surcharged. So it’s no longer going to be business as usual.’’

Immediately that is done, they swoop in to mine lithium.

20k for a whole month? In a way the light is kinda cheap. I use 7k fuel every night. If you can give me light for that same hours for 50k a month I'll dive at the it.

No matter how you look at it, nepa light is still cheaper than running generators.
I never said the 20k a month will last them; I was only giving an illustration that even if the family decides to ration N20k it will be almost impossible with this new tariff.

It depends on the electrical appliances u have at home like AC, Microwave, etc.

Saying NEPA is cheap is the reason why they keep treating us like trash and getting away with it. U can visibly see people contesting the claim that they enjoy 20 hours light daily which is the lamba NERC has used to jack up the rate.

I know u will want to use the tariff in other countries like UK, USA , Swedeen, etc to compare naija, but remember they have 24/7 light there.

IPP are the way to go, but when you look at Nigeria, you will know the country is already a weapon fashioned against prosperity.

In all of these energy challenges, the Ministry should be looking at how to generate green energy. China and India have generated Gigawatts from the Sun. Why isnt it possible?

Yes, Solar is expensive, but the raw materials are here. Why not we find a way to produce these things here, and it becomes cheaper for us to use, without the burden of FX?

Instead, state governments will be giving Chinese the licence to mine lithium here for peanuts. Those ones will carry the lithium to China, design batteries with it, and come and sell it to us in USD.
That's why I've always maintained we have leadership issues in this country; the entire one year I spent in the north made me realize that.

The sun in the north is so harsh, but less than a week over there it got me thinking : "why are we not tapping into solar to power houses and factories in the north?"

When I got to my PPA, I was surprised to see a full ICT center that was constructed by the Federal government which is powered by Solar. Like if there's no NEPA light for 3 days , some of us corpers literally relocate to the ICT center to spend our days there while we only go to our lodge to eat only to return there.

Then I was like, if this thing is actually possible , then why do we have the north on the national grid? Like rain might fall for as much as 275 days out of 365 days in a year. Why is the federal government and the state governments not figure out a way to gradually take this people off the national grid by investing in Solar energy over time. Why does everyone has to rely on the hydro electric?

Why is the FG not thinking of how the gas deposits in the Niger Delta can be used to generate power for Niger Delta states? Why is FG only pumping into NDDC money that will be looted by their appointees?

Like why do we have simple and obvious answers looking at us in the eye and we just choose to ignore them?

Those ones would just stop paying bill and face bribing IKEDC officials fully.

When u give someone in a 2 bedroom like N60k bill what do u think he will do? If he pays N20k out of it , dem go still cut him light cos he still have N40k unpaid. But if he bribes IKEDC with less than N10k nobody will cut his light for the month.

That will go on and on ;and Discos will still come online to continue to groan that they are not making profit.

Independent Power plant would've been more beneficial to them, but those stuff are very very expensive considering the exchange rate now and when it's up u will be paying serious money to keep ur engineers motivated to work.

Omo! But now with this tariff rate, fight go dey happen between families on rationing units o. Imagine make wife commot house forget to switch some power source while the husband is looking at how they will ration 83 units @ 20k for the whole month.

This scatter gun approach this administration is doing with their policies is strangling the productivity of the private sector. If you don't want to help the masses, why not create a conducive climate for businesses to thrive, rather you're dishing out policies that are counter productive.
Most companies like MTN, Nigerian breweries, Nestle, Cadbury declared losses for the 2023 financial year due to exchange rate wahala and fuel subsidy removal.

Okay fair point. I was thinking generally about people that don't have the generators before now.

But even if they disconnect from Discos and opt to rely on generating set 24/7, I don't think their generator will work round the clock. They may have to get a second generator as backup. Also the cost of fueling may not reach 40m but it will certainly go higher than the current N14m
