Well, you can argue that diesel is not subsidized. And that that hits the generators of the rich.

Also the wealthy at least in lagos are paying more for electricity via tiering. If you are on a higher tier you can get 18 hours of guaranteed light per day, which is cheaper and more reliable than a diesel generator
I didn't say rich like private businessmen who invested their wealth of experience, family/generational wealth, etc into the private sector to make money for themselves and co-investors. I said political office holders who obviously get into political office just to help themselves to tax payers money. People who don't face hardship but apportion hardship allowances to themselves steady because they can

Something has to give.
With the resumption of $ pegging, there's only so much subsidy they can pay before we become insolvent.
They'd play a game of hot potatoes with the different subsidies until something cracks or they maneuver their way to 2026.

The truly despicable development is dragging their feet on wage increase.
It's beyond scandalous now.

With that said, electricity subsidy has to go.
A country of 220m people wheeling a measly 4GW has no business paying electricity subsidy.
We can't clear gas debt of $1B, but we're to pay $2B per year on subsidy.
And unlike gasoline subsidy, they can actually stagger the removal and push the cost disproportionately to the upper class.

-Lord
The only reason I will ever agree to any end of subsidy is if the subsidy the rich and mighty enjoy ends as well. If government officials stop maintaining a convoy of vehicles that are mostly empty; if senators stop getting constituency allowances they don't accout for, if governors stop getting security votes they don't account for, etc.

If everybody will lose one form of subsidy or the other, then we will all face the new Nigeria together. It makes no sense that a country with so much resources as Nigeria has political office holders living large, the general people living in penury and more woes are still on the way

‘Electricity Tariff To Rise By 300%’

Power companies will be allowed to raise electricity prices to N200 ($0.15) per kilowatt-hour from N68 for urban consumers this month, the Bloomberg news agency, citing sources, reported Tuesday.

It was learnt that these customers represent 15% of the population that the government says consume 40% of the nation’s electricity, the agency said.

Bloomberg said Nigeria plans to almost triple energy prices within weeks.

It quoted people in the presidency with knowledge of the matter saying this was in a bid to attract new investment and slash about $2.3 billion spent to cap tariffs (subsidies).

According to the news agency, “Nigerians will now have to pay $2.42 per one million British thermal units from the previous rate of $2.18 MMBtu.”

Daily Trust reports that this revelation is coming in the wake of Monday’s announcement by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) of an increase in the price of natural gas, which is used to generate more than 70% of electricity in Nigeria.

NMDPRA had set a new 2024 base gas price for companies in the power sector and commercial users.

This was contained in a statement signed by Farouk Ahmed, the authority’s chief executive.

Nigeria had privatised generation and distribution in 2013, and tariffs are set by the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), a government-controlled body.

Bloomberg said, “Power firms aren’t allowed to charge enough to recover the cost of distributing electricity, with the government paying the difference as a subsidy to companies in the sector.

“The government has in the past said that electricity companies are short of an estimated two trillion naira in capital and need new investors to revive the industry.”

But activists who spoke to our correspondents yesterday expressed shock, saying it would be impossible for Nigerians to bear outright removal of subsidy on electricity, in addition to the removal of fuel subsidy, which had in turn made life unbearable

When contacted by Daily Trust yesterday, the General Manager, Public Affairs of NERC, Dr Usman Arabi, did not respond to calls and text messages sent to his phone.

But Bloomberg quoted Bayo Onanuga, a spokesman for the presidency as saying, “The regulator (NERC) will make a pronouncement based on its discussion with the distribution and generating companies.

“The presidency cannot say anything at this stage. Electricity sector is hurting.”

Nigerians overstretched – CSOs

However, members of the Civil Society (CSOs) have expressed deep concern over the recent reports indicating that the federal government is once again planning to almost triple the electricity tariff within weeks.

Speaking on the development, the Executive Director, Resource Centre for Human Rights and Civic Education (CHRICED), Comrade Ibrahim M. Zikirullahi, said that the proposed tariff of N200 per kilowatt, compared to the current N68 per kilowatt, highlights the lack of empathy within President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

“This move disregards the struggles of millions of Nigerians who have been pushed further into poverty as a result of the abrupt and poorly planned removal of fuel subsidies.”

CHRICED warns that the “bull in the China shop” approach to public policy implementation, will only worsens the economic hardships faced by Nigerians during the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.

He said: “Despite mounting tensions, the government seems oblivious to the growing impatience among Nigerians, paving the way for potential mass protests and social unrest in the country”.

Also, the Executive Director, Cleen Foundation, Gad Peter, said that the development was surprising, especially because when Tinubu government came on board in May 2023, the discussion of increasing electricity tariff came and it was shelved because of the difficulties Nigerians were going through.

“I remember the National Assembly saying that the timing was very wrong. So I am surprised that we are coming back to this conversation again and it is almost a 300 per cent increase.

“I think the federal government and the electricity distribution companies and all of their allies need to be more sensitive to the pain that Nigerians are going through.

“I am very much aware that you know that in the last one month or so, electricity supply has been very inconsistent, people are just struggling to survive.

“And even people that have alternative sources of power like generators are struggling to either buy diesel or fuel to be able to run it through the night or through the day to keep businesses and to stay alive by reducing the heat.

“I think that this is not the best decision considering the fact that we are still struggling with the negative effect of the removal of the fuel subsidy.

“We are still struggling with insecurity, with the level of poverty in the country, still struggling that people are paying high for fuel,” he said.

Efforts to reach the President of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, to get the official position of the organised labour last night proved abortive.

Ajaero, who did not pick several calls, did not also reply to a text message sent to him as at when filing this report.

In the same vein, calls to the Head of Information at NLC Headquarters, Benson Upah, rang unanswered, and he was yet to reply to a WhatsApp message sent to him.

How fuel subsidy removal, fx complicated electricity tariff

Experts have repeatedly said that the removal of subsidies on petrol and the floating of the naira by the current administration are two twin decisions that have complicated NERC’s 2022 Multi-Year Tariff Order (MYTO)

Although the power sector players have been unable to meet the threshold of supplying at least 5,000 megawatts a year after signing contracts with NERC, the commission’s current Service Based Tariff (SBT) was benchmarked on an exchange rate of N441/$ and inflation of 16.97 per cent.

Going by the NERC’s orders, in 2015, the average tariff across distribution companies (DisCos) and classes of end-users was N25 kilowatt, in order of 198/2020, which came into effect on September 1, 2020. The average tariff went to N60 per kilowatt; in the MYTO for 2022, the average tariff was N64 across classes of customers.

The foreign exchange rate used in determining the 2015 tariff was N198.97/$, N383.80/$ was used in 2020, while N441.78/$ was used in 2022. The inflation used in the 2015 MYTO was 8.3 per cent, 12 per cent was used in 2020 and 16.97 per cent in 2022.

Currently, the inflation rate is 31.70 per cent and some experts have projected that it would hit 35 per cent by the end of June[/b]
Source: Daily Trust.

It's about to go down. Pulling the lever on the electricity subsidy is another disaster waiting to happen.

All of these, please do not lose track of the fact that the daily trust news piece mentioned it that in 2015 when APC as a party took over leadership, the exchange rate used to determine electricity tariff was N198.97 and within 5 years it was N441.78. The inflation rate jumped from 8.3% in 2015 to 12% in 2020 and 16.97 under same APC government. Currently inflation rate is 31.70% and projected to reach 35% before end of June.

In all of these, Tinubu-led APC government is about to pull the lever on electricity subsidy.

Exactly.

Let Blueraydick and Jodera come and tell us that that defensive shape is our usual pattern.

If it is then I accept that Arteta planned to win. If not then he planned to draw.
I have already addresed this yesterday . Arsenal won City with same strategy in the 2020 FA cup semi final . Arsenal scored 2 goals in that match.

Except u want to feign forgetfulness , u know we've had series of discussions on this thread in the past arguing about Arteta's approach to matches in the past when he will go defensive . I remember vividly well, Arteta sure knows how to go defensive and we always have people here complain about it in the past

The bolded is a caveat. Remove that and see that it doesn't align with your point.

Mind you I am a proponent of Defence wins you league.

I listened to Alonso about Pep, he said, surprisingly, that Pep focuses more on his team's defensive shape during training than attack. So a good team that wants to win will both defend and attack.

Every winning team will both attack and defend. But when a team focuses entirely on defending then they plan for a draw. Simple.
Even if they eventually win which is possible it doesn't not change the fact that their plan was to secure a draw
lol.

I clearly put that effective attack knowing u will want to dwell on that . The good thing is Arsenal's attack is over effective cos we have scored gge most goals in the league this season till date .

That makes my point for me that Arteta actually didn't play to draw . He studied his opponent and neutralized them in every possible way in the books . He relied on his effective attack that managed 2 shot on target to city's 1 shot on target ; but were unfortunate not to have converted it.

Kapish !

When a team defends it means they are playing for a draw. You don't defend and say you plan to win. Simple logic.

However as Roland17 said, a coach can employ a less expansive tactics that allows him to stay compact while looking out for an opportunity to go all out. Arteta didn't do that, instead he when he saw that City had ran out of ideas he began to press higher towards the last 20/25mins.

My point is (mind you I am thinking in retrospect) if he had done that from the onset we would have beaten City because they weren't that good as I thought.
The bold is false . Athletico set their plans to be ultra defensive with an effective attack going forward once in a while under Simoene . They've won two La Liga titles under him and if u check the league table in 2014 and 2021 u will see that simeone's Athletico won more games than anybody in those two seasons .

Setting up ur team to defend is certainly not 100% proof that u play to draw

The bold is exactly the reason why I made that post u quoted ; ordinarily I have no business quoting u or anybody engaging u over ur imaginary online beefs .Simply because when this place is finally overrun with incessant squabbles that degenerate to personals being splashed everywhere ; thread may get locked .

As much as this place is a beer parlor where we discuss all forms of topics and joke about many things, u should know this thread serve as a meeting post for great minds . Different people in different parts of the world who share ideas and knowledge . This thread affords some of us opportunity to connect with others who have turn out to give us ideas/knowledge and advice that worked out for us on personal , professional and financial level .

Afrodoc not quite long helped me with an advice that assisted me in achieving a career-defining move. Recently egbon olowuni mentioned how our discussions on real estate/housing project aided him in making up his mind on a real estate investment which he hasn't regretted till date. I'm sure different people have one or two things they've gained by the continued existence of this thread.

This thread is not a playground to settle beef and squabbles u have with people all over nairaland . The fact that it's called a chatroom doesn't make it where u want to clap back at trolls and then make it impossible for other important discussions to be had.

U can always report anybody that trolls u or invade ur privacy by posting personal details about u on any thread they do that. Stop importing beefs to this thread. If u have issues with someone on this thread regarding trolling , there's always the option of "mail the mods " on this board . U can write as much as u want in ur mail to the mods. I know the mods on this board read those mails cos I've gotten antispam
bot ban lifted early through those mails at different times .

Talking about giving it back in full measures to every subs and insults...etc ...... I believe u will one day realize the wisdom in a saying that's credited to Winston Churchill which goes: " You Will never reach your destination if you stop to throw stones at every dog that barks "

One Year After Being Commissioned, Over "36 Billion Naira" Ebonyi International Airport Yet To Start Operation (Photos)

By Wisdom Nwedene

One year after the commissioning of the Ebonyi International airport, Local airlines have boycotted the airport due to its defective runway.

Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi had mapped out 13.7 Billion Naira to repair the airport which reportedly gulped 36 Billion Naira, barely six months after his predecessor, David Umahi commissioned the Airport.

Recall that in April 2023, the Ebonyi airport was launched with two inaugural flights of Air Peace aircraft touching down on the runway of the airport.

The epoch-making event was well attended by top federal and state government officials as well as dignitaries across the country.

However, a few months after the inauguration, reports had it that the Ebonyi airport runaway had developed problems.

The airport which has gulped over 40 Billion Naira of the state resources is yet to yield any revenue into the coffers of the state government which needs revenue to pursue its growth and development agenda.

Ebonyi State International Airport is an airport located in Onueke, Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, Nigeria, along the Abakaliki-Afikpo Expressway.

The airport is meant to service Ebonyi, Abia and Benue states.
Dave Umahi just run them street for this Eboyin International airport project. Smh.

He said it in pre match interview tgat he will beat arsenal.

Do u know that even with our plan.
They almost succeeded.

If u came to win and your opponents are creating chances upon chances....u will be forced to defend.

But u see this Mancity game...Pep just wanted to score a goal and control the possession to the end....if we try to do anyhow ...he will unleash more goals.

We had the better chance.

Arteta did not come to draw.
He knows Pep meant arsenal on Sunday.

Arteta read it well.
Once Pep saw that he was nullified...he began to play his Mancity normal game.
Then reverted back to his between lines game again.

Arsenal players aside coach were playing with their life depend on that game. If not we for loose.

Once I saw that 1st 10min, I knew that we'll naturally default to play that pattern cos Man City really pressed and counter pressed us. Not only that, they practically block off all passing lanes. I mean, look at Raya playing long balls during goalkicks, if you look well, City block of all passing lanes to prevent us from playing at the back and at such moments, it'll be very very foolish to play at the back.

Arteta always talks about "living the game" or you try and live the game mostly in his pre match and post match press.

I dunno if anyone is conversant with it but if you don't and you really want to know what it means, then you can read this article at your spare time

https://www.google.com/url?q=https://theathletic.com/4102887/2023/01/19/mikel-arteta-arsenal-living-games/&sa=U&ved=2ahUKEwj67f7QmaOFAxWdQEEAHdMcBAAQFnoECAoQAg&usg=AOvVaw3BlGD3sxL0wo6s-LvESNZE

Immediately I saw that 1st ten to 15min and I knew Man City came for blood. I just immediately know that that's how we'll play out (thereby living the game).
This is why I kept refrencing how Pep choked up the midfield. He knew what he was doing and wanted to snuff life out of us from the middle to the final third.

If Raya had been trying to force play from back along with Saliba, Gabriel and Kiwior we for don collect in that 1st half sef cos City too were passive aggressive in closing us down ASAP from back.

More over we played 3 at the back with inverted full backs that form 5 or load the attack sometimes

This one saka and jesus defended with the full backs leaving only kai to roam
Sometimes odegaard join the DMs to neutralized any assault
That's because we practically played 5 man defence that day . We played 3 CB's and 2 WB's. Mitland-Niles and Bellerin were practically defenders coming back to help defence so there's no need for Auba and Pepe to go beyond the half way line when defending .

Saka and Jesus on the other hand had to join our defense in this Sunday game cos city overload midfield and would've run us over if we let their combined attack and midfield run riot on our 2 CB's and 2 Full backs while Saka and Jesus are holding position.

The game is a tactical masterpiece in which Arteta came prepared with all the answers to the Pep problem

So what did Arteta play to do in 2020 FA cup semi final when we played the same pattern and won city 2-0?

Just take a look at the stats of both matches ; u can see that stats are very very similar. The only major difference is the fact that our attack took more shots at goal and they converted 2 while we didn't convert any in this Sunday match .

I don't think Arteta played to draw at all. Instead I think he came with a pattern to prevent city from playing and his own team making the best out of any opportunity that presents itself . It's simply cos he knows going all out against city is suicide

What the lady did can best be described as a defamation. Defamation is a civil issue not a criminal issue. Fines should be appropriate in this scenario, jail term should only be considered if she fails to pay said fine. This is how it works in the societies where the people that wants the woman to be hanged live in.

In the US, and UK for example people don't get hanged over defamation.

Omo it's like most of these people would be worse than our politicians if given the opportunity of.
Actually , In Nigeria defamation can either be both civil and criminal wrong ( which is an anomaly )

This is one of the reasons why people have been calmouring for the useless 1999 constitution to be thrown into the trash can. The 1999 constitution was a constitition that had the trauma of military era written all over it in many ways.

It was the era when making a statement like calling a governor a thief can get u locked up for "defamation " under the penal code.

If u read the attached document u will see that most forward thinking countries u mentioned up there have since had criminal defamation expunged from their laws .Even the USA where few states still have criminal defamation law, they rarely prosecute them.

In Nigeria, influential people use their contact persons in the police force to activate the criminal defamation law and start hounding u here and there. Even when Administration of Criminal Justice Act prohibits police from interfering in civil disputes .

Ideally defamation should be a civil dispute but since criminal defamation is still regarded as a crime and the cybercrime las sef still dey one side, it's only advisable one be careful and not step on big toes when making a claim about a big man or woman o.

Jesus played like he wanted to prove a point to apari

I think we score more without him
The funny thing is Jesus has always been like that . The only reason people are angry is because we didn't eventually win the game.

If u watch Jesus well , u will notice that due to the fact that he's skillful and can work his way round tight spaces ; he doesn't like to shoot to hit any opponent for deflection . He always likes to take direct and clear shot when the road is finally clear .

Immediately he had the ball yesterday I knew he was going to try and dribble himslef out of that position . I was not really agitated he didn't hit the target eventually cos I know his game

Bros I already addressed this. Effoing wasn't her initial lawyer, her initial lawyer was smart enough to know settlement was the better option. Watch that man video again, he said Chioma herself was the one that offered to write an apology letter.

It was when Effoing came into the picture that we started hearing illegal detention and all.

The police tried to rearrest her in January because she jumped bail which is a crime in itself but they didnt and till now the lady is still walking free so I dont know what point you want to make from there.

All the best to both of them.
Lolz . The police tried to arrest her because she jumped bail, then they didn't arrest her again because she has un jumped bail Abi ? grin

It feels so refreshing seeing that everybody suddenly feel believe the word of Nigerian police and everybody suddenly assumes Nigerian police is the best behaved police force in the world that will not engage is anything like illegal detention .

It is well with all parties concerned . All the best to them .

Bros, Effoing wasn't her initial lawyer from the beginning. Of course hes going to say anything to defend his client even if it's not right.

I'm just telling you that arresting her on Sunday and releasing her on Tuesday cannot in anywhere be termed illegal detention.

Theres a reason why they are trying to make it look as if the Erisco man is bullying her or using the police to detain her illegally. I've asked you to show anywhere the police detained her illegally and you cant show any because it doesn't exist.

Anyways, it's all good and I wish both of them the best.
U are still back at "if's " , what if and what not. Somebody was arrested and later released .

Her lawyer instead of signing off on her releasing an apology letter has sued for her illegal detention ; yet u are asking me to show u how she was detained illegally ? How ?

I also noticed u sideline the attempted rearrest in January .

I don't recall me telling u at any point Effiong was her initial lawyer. People change lawyers for varying reasons . The Kano state governor changed his lawyer after losing his preliminary hearing .

I also wish both parties well at the court proceedings . I don't have any attachment to both parties ; may the best team win.
