Initially, I thought you are an abrodian. If you are in Nigeria, you should know how retailers operate.

While supermarkets rely on making huge turnover daily, retail shops rely on strangling their customers and using emotional blackmail to attack them when they stop buying.

In 2022, a pack of fearless energy drink was sold 1,800 at wholesale price. Cost price was 150, so while Supermarkets sold 170 per one, retail shops sold 250 per one.

Shockingly, the wholesaler who invested millions in his business makes 20 to 30 naira profit on a pack of drink. He supplies to these retail shops hoping that those one will add a reasonable profit margin and sell off quickly so that he can supply again to them as he relies on making bulk sells to get by.

These retailers add stupid profit margin, then take ages to finish selling while the producer and wholesaler suffers.

Another example, a friend who makes and supplies duvets to his customers in Enugu told me that those retailers took ages to finish selling his duvets. He had to go there to find out what was happening. He realized that after selling to them at 12,800 per one, those thieves were selling between 26 to 28k per one.

He had to rent 2 shops in the same market, employed a sales girl and sold himself at 15k per one. They have been fighting him ever since.

This is exactly what these retailers do to producers in Nigeria and we can't progress as a nation until all of them are closed down completely to give way for organized retailing.

I get u. Unfortunately, we are at the mercy of these retailers because there are so many spaces the organized retailing arrangement cannot reach. If u don't live in a major city in this country where u have superstores like shoprite, spar, jendol, justrite, Grocery Bazaar, Globus, Blenco, and other new ones, u will have no choice but to buy from those retailers.

I am based in Lagos and I buy from some of these retailers too when I don't have a choice due to circumstances. There's little consumer protection can do sef cos they will be spread thin to even cover one Local government.

One thing I believe is that if this reduction in naira-to-dollar exchange rate is sustained over time, the retailers, wholesalers, distributors and producers will have no choice but to lower their prices. Let's hope that happens for real

Well, I don't know how much they sell pure water and coke from factory now but I know certainly that the prices increased due to increase in cost of production majorly the polythyne and PET bottle used for their packaging ( I know these things cos I have access to the prices of raw.materials of these items in Naira last year and this year )

It's a given that typical Nigerian retailer while adjusting their selling price due to increase in cost price would always look for ways to make more profit since they know the reipple effect of the hike in price will affect other essential commodities they will be buying themselves .

U should also consider that those selling in traffick have to ice the drinks either by buying ice block or buying already iced drinks which they will add their own profit margin o. And he icing cost follows diesel price since electricity has been poor recently nationwide

Now to your question, I am certain that the same 250 litres hisense freezer I saw at Fouani with a price tag of 258,000 is the same one I saw for 391,000 when dollar got to 1,800 per naira.

Went there last week, I still saw the same freezer with the same price tag.

I'm not justifying anything . All I told u up there is that supermarkets get their supplies directly from the producer or their major distributor at ex-factory price and they sell their stock out faster cos they have people patronising them on a regular basis . So it's possible for them to have adjusted their retail price to reflect the reduction in price effected by indomie .

Retailer on the other hand buy from wholesalers who may have stock up in large quantity while the price was high and u won't see them reduce the price until the wholesaler restock at the new reduced price .

Now I'm not ruling out the possibility that some retailers may still want to cash-in on the whole thing to make exorbitant profit; but I'm only telling u that a retailer do not directly control the price as much as the suoearket does.

As regards the fouani matter , it appears we were discussing 2 different things. Somehow I missed it point on that.

Except that things in market square are not cheap. Ideally, you get things cheaper outside than in market square. When market square was selling indomie at 18k, the woman that supplies my wife was selling 16,500.

That's where economies of scale comes in Na . They spread the total cost over a large number of goods . Some items will be seen as cheap by their customers while some will be seen as expensive . They may be making a kill selling bread at a cheap price , while their frozen foods are perceived to be expensive .

This particular products we are talking about are FMCG : FAST MOVING consumer goods . As u dey buy u dey sell.

Mai tea sells indomie every blessed night; so he will need to restock often. When restocking he will be buying from wholesaler who gets supplied by major distributors either twice a month ; monthly or quarterly .

The wholesaler who was supplied when Dollar spiked up will not sell to Mai tea at a reduced price the following week cos dollar has come down Na. Until when next she gets her supplies, the wholesaler cannot change her price

One day I wanted to buy apple, the woman told me it was 500 naira per one. The apple was smaller than what I usually buy at 400 naira in market square.

Had to ask why her apple is more expensive than market square when market square pays staff, probably has a loan they are servicing and sometimes run 24/7 on diesel. She didn't have any reasonable response apart from the normal cock and bull story of how she bought one at 499 naira and one naira is her gain.

Another instance, my son wanted to celebrate his birthday so we had to prepare a party pack for his classmates. I went to the store someone directed me to. I'll point at one thing she will say it's 1500 per one. I'll point at another and she'll say its 2500 per one. Even the pack itself she said it was 500 naira per one. There are 22 children in his class. If I put gifts of 5k in one party pack, I'll spend more than 100k. I left her shop and went to mile 3 market.

The pack she told me was 500 per one, I bought dozen for 1000. To think she will even buy cheaper than me because I was so shocked at the price that I didn't even bother to price it.

That experience really opened my eyes. When next I have things to buy in bulk, I head over to mile 3.

Apple is imported and not grown in Nigeria .

Market Square is able to sell at a reduced cost due to economies of scale. Market square's cost of operation/production is spread over a large number of goods.

I saw her post referencing supermarkets bringing down price of their indomie almost immediately after indomie reduce the ex-factory price . That's because those supermarkets get supplied by the producer or their major distributor right from source Na .
