When I served, I heard the stipend paid to corp members was different from the actual amount federal govt paid. So there were Ogas chopping part of the money.

It's a very big racket. Even banks follow join sef; those ones will always make sure ur allawee is not complete by the time u receive alert.

Normal N19,800.00 dem go pay u N19,500 instaed; God knows where the N300 difference always end up sef.

I've always known it was one huge racket even back then but as times have changed there should be a push to make it optional, after all it would also save them having to pay allawee to the people that do not want to partake.

I'm sure there's people that see value in the program as they might have problems finding fulltime jobs moving forward let them do it and allow those who want to opt out opt out.

Truly believe it should be optional instead of mandatory, at least we would have fewer people going through the hassle of forging certificates for a useless program that doesn't even guarantee competence anyway

As far as I'm concerned, it's a waste of one full year of an adult's life. Apart from affording one the opportunity to know more about the culture & traditions of ur host state, I really do not see the value the scheme offers.

Even before I served, I've been calling for the NYSC service year nonsense to be scrapped. It was during NYSC I realized they won't scrap simply for the following selfish reasons:

1. The vendors/contractors who supply uniforms, jungle boots, books, orientation materials and even food on camp are powerful people.

2. Most of the state government and federal government schools are under-staffed. Some schools don't even have permanent teachers for important subjects like English, Physics, Economics, Financial Accounts, etc. Year after year they use NYSC members to run those subjects.

3.Some private organizations in places like Lagos, Abuja etc prefer to use NYSC members for cheap labour. They use them to handle graduate jobs and pay them stipends without any commitment to employ them permanently after the end of the service year.

This country is quite unbelievable. NYSC went to court with evidences to show that the discharge certificate being paraded by the Enugu state governor is fake and not issued by them.

SaharaReporters had reported that Governor Mbah, in his court filings, claimed that he duly completed his national youth service and was given a certificate of discharge.

The governor earlier sued the NYSC, claiming N20 billion in damages for what he described as conspiracy, deceit, and misrepresentation of facts.

Mbah is also seeking a declaration that he participated in the NYSC scheme for one calendar year via a call-up letter numbered FRN/2001/800351 with the Lagos code LA/01/1532.

He argued that the declaration must state that he was issued a certificate of national service numbered A808297 upon completing his service year in 2003.

But contrary to these claims, the NYSC, in its deposition, which SaharaReporters sighted on Sunday, insisted that the Enugu State governor did not complete his service year and that the certificate of discharge he parades was not issued by the body.

To prove its claim, the NYSC filed as evidence, the data sheet where Mbah was to have signed and collected his discharge certificate, saying that while the certificate presented by the Enugu governor bears the serial number - A808297, the one prepared for him, but which he did not collect, bore the serial number - 673517.

In what looks like forensic evidence, the NYSC made reference to the calligraphic writing on Mbah’s certificate and stated that the style of the writing on the governor’s certificate was quite different from the one on all other certificates issued to discharged corps members during his batch.

Stating that the corps directorate hired one person for the calligraphic writings on all certificates, it insisted that there was no way Mbah’s own could be different from those of other corps members that passed out during the same period.

“The 1" Respondent's (NYSC) National Directorate Headquarters issued the Certificates for the Members of the Service Corps in Lagos State, including the Certificate of the Applicant, using a Certificate Issuance Register.

“The register indicated the basic data of the Members of the Service Corps, including their State Code, name, Call-Up Number, and Certificate Number in serial form. A copy of the relevant page of the Certificate Issuance Register at the National Directorate Headquarters, showing the Applicant in asterisks with Certificate Number 673517, is attached herewith and marked as Exhibit ‘NYSC 5,’” the NYSC said in its deposition.

The NYSC also stated that contrary to Mbah’s claim that his probable date of discharge was September 15, 2002, his probable date of discharge upon completing his programme at the Nigerian Law School, was September 15, 2003.

It was further averred that Peter Mbah was not issued any discharge certificate by the NYSC because he did not complete his service year, even when he was mobilised for the same.

The NYSC further noted that the discharge certificate prepared for him was later returned to its headquarters, along with other unclaimed certificates, after which it was destroyed along with other unclaimed certificates, in the presence of security operatives.

“Following the 1" Respondent's Top Management's directive on 18th August 2021, all the outdated, unused, and cancelled Certificates of National Service and Certificates of Exemption, Certificates of absconded Members of the Service Corps, including the Applicant's Certificate Number A673517 which he was not available to collect, have been disposed of by incineration,” the NYSC further said in its deposition.

Yet somehow, the court there's no enough evidence to conclude the certificate is fake

A Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday dismissed the allegations of forgery of a discharge certificate brought against the Enugu State Governor, Barrister Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, by the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

Justice Inyang Eden Ekwo threw away the allegations following the inability of the Corps to prove and defend the allegations as required by law.

The judge, in a judgment in a suit by the Governor against the NYSC, imposed a fine of N5 million on the Corps to be paid jointly to the plaintiff for suppressing facts and conspiring against him in the heinous allegations.

The court held that with the unchallenged evidence of the plaintiff on how the discharge certificate was issued to him in 2003 by NYSC after serving in a law firm in Lagos and the inability of the Corps to come up with counter-evidence, it was crystal clear that the plaintiff served the mandatory one-year service.

Among others, Justice Ekwo held that while the onus to prove forgery allegations lies heavily on the NYSC, it failed, leaving Mbah’s evidence heavier and more believable.

Mbah had sued the NYSC and its Director, Corps Certification, Ibrahim Muhammad, for publishing a disclaimer, denying the issuance of a discharge certificate issued to him on January 6, 2003.

The NYSC had, on February. 1, written a letter signed by Ibrahim Muhammed saying that the Corps did not issue the NYSC certificate in Mbah’s possession

What the author of the article did is poor journalism. The journalist never stated the conclusion of the case....Like what was the judgement pronounced at the end of the trial?

At least the case was taken before a judge in 2018; its already 5 years after. Did the EFCC eventually recover the funds? Has the the court unfrozen the 10 bank accounts linked to the woman?

The only item on the list I have issue with is corporate car parks. So they mean If I have an office building that has parking space in the compound I will have to pay to park inside ? It makes no sense. Why ? because the same building owner pays Income tax and land use charge; it amounts to multiple taxation asking the same person to pay for parking space in his own premises .

As for commercial car parks and public places like setback & in-street parking; I think it's normal for people to pay to park there.
