Nad95: Hi, medics and aspirant in the house. Please help me as to what school to choose. I'm thinkin of choosing unical for dentistry and oou for medicine and surgery. I'm preparing to write jamb this year however medicine and surgery is my passion. I'm just choosing dentistry in UNICAL so I I can increase my chances of getting admission come 2019. I just hope I'm making a wise decision or what state admission is easier to gain admission into given that I get a very good jamb and post utme score Thanks, Nnamdi. Chairman, I'd advise you not to pick dentistry if you don't have the drive for it. And don't see it as a Substitute for Medicine.. to prevent stories that touch. Some 500L students here that couldn't cope anymore voluntarily withdrew from the faculty due to frustration. Its very very wrong to choose a course because of your "chances of gaining admission". If Medicine is your *PASSION*, just choose a good school that might favour you in terms of catchment too, and channel all your efforts into it. Second choice slot is as good as empty; unless you apply to a Private university. All the best Sir |

RoastedCorn: Hello,
In the rush of entering 200level and getting medical textbooks I bought keith Moore, I had only read humerus in upper limb and could not remember most things. When I tried reading a textbook written just like chaurasia (textbook of anatomy by vishram sighn) I found out I could grab more things with smaller effort in reading and very little revision. I dashed my textbook out to a fellow classmate who wants the Keith Moore and continued reading the chaurasia like textbooks with small small class notes to confirm figures (stuffs like what you lecturer says on "how many ossifications centers does so so so bones have and what the textbook says about it. Cos they might be different since vishram is an Indian textbook).
The thing about Indian textbooks is that it is very student friendly, perfectly arranged for easy assimilations and contains mnemonics for you to learn things better (things like " girl between two surgeons", "lady between two majors", " Lucknow medical college, medical college Lucknow etc). I must also admit it has many stuffs you don't need, hence the need for your note as a guide.
Guyton has a lot of hyperstuff in it, so just read sembulingam and your class note but if you aim to have a distinction read guyton.
MN Charttajea is very good for biochemistry.
Saddler and BRS is good for embryology.
In medical school read when you should read, play too, do extracurricular stuffs to develop yourself, its what would keep you sane and most importantly read smartly.
My BDS part1A results was out today and I passed Anatomy, physiology and biochemistry without reading everything
Goodluck. Congratulations Chief |

Mandeyy: Bro, i am a UNN dental student. The only problem in dentistry is passing the exam. It's a very hard course. Before i got admission into it, i used to think it's easy and that it's all about pulling teeth. But now that i'm into it, i now know my previous perception of it was wrong. In fact, both medicine and dentistry do the same courses from 1st year to fourth (4th) year before going their separate ways in fifth year. As if that's not enough, 5th yr dental students will thereafter join final yr medical students to do their final yr courses with them which will require them going to clinical posting together with these final year medical students and then write the same exam with them for these courses, despite the fact that dentistry is for the oral and maxillofacial region. Then in final yr, they will focus on their core dental courses....... Well delivered Chief. The holybook has said it all. "My people perish for lack of knowledge" Some UI final yr Dental students paid us (100L students) a visit yesterday and they said almost everything you just typed out. I think those who will suffer more are those who have access to knowledge but refuse to tap into it. good evening |
