please explain the physics in terms we all would understand. I know a bird's feet has an outter skin that like rubber and therefore current can't pass through. but human is skin all through and therefore can be shocked anyhow.I will try and explain but I did physics in o level long, long time ago. I think for there to be an electric shock, current must flow through the body and it must be earthed. For this to happen the body must actually touch the earth (ground). There can also be a shock if there is flow in two directions (I think) A physicist or engineer can elaborate or correct me. But the bottom line is that the scales on the feet of the birds are not insulating materials. They are just like our fingernails too. If you touch electricity with your nails, you'l be electrocuted/electrified (whichever is correct). If a bird or human being touching an (one line of) electric wire happens to also touch the ground with another part of the body, it will be electrocuted/electrified. Likewise if the body touches two different wires at the same time. If you are able to jump up and get suspended without touching the ground and you hold an electric wire, you can not be electrocuted/electrified. If you hold on to two at the same time or your body then touches the ground or a conductor (something that conducts electricity) that touches the ground then you will be. (I will go and look for a physics text book and re-read the above before I can defend it properly but my faint understanding of Nelkon and Abbots is what I tried to explain above.) |
are you the marketing guy in glo? |
Ok, ok, ok, now I know. Then yes, there are 'spirits' of poverty. And one can pray to break the yoke of these 'spirits' of poverty. That means that poverty itself is the end results of the things that cause it, more or less like the symptom(s) of somethings more sinister, e.g bad leaders in government unemployment wrong investment plans inflation thieving public officers or even laziness etc I just wanted to be sure that poverty is not seen as something that one is born with; or family/generational disease or something that a pastor will need you to fast and pray for, to cast out because (in agreement with the proponents of brain usage), by using one's brain one can prevent, avoid or fight all the above causes. |
Leilah The only thing I want to ask you is are you banking on alimony payout as part of the deal? |
that one that clinged to high tension wire without being shocked can be expleined with physics just as birds also perch on high tension wires without getting shocked. But let me tell you this laughable one too. Many years ago, when that bank with big glass house in V.I opposite bar beach (i've forgotten the name now) still used to be one of the most solid banks in Nigeria, a friend of mine working there then told me that when the ocean waters first used to surge unto Ahmadu Bello way (is it?) some prophets with 'area of specialisation' in marine spirits and these 'under-water spirits' approached the bank and told them that the up-surge of the waters was due to the bank's glass house (new then) reflecting the rays of the sun into the water thereby blinding the water spirits. So they said they needed to do sacrifices (etutu) to appease those water gods and demanded 1 million naira (in those days o; I think it was early nineties). My friend actually said that some staff of the bank were actually believing those 'prophets'. ![]() Thank God there was no EFCC then, they should have arrested and jailed them all. ![]() |
Can someone define this poverty we are talking about before I comment? |
I don tire for all this kind of topics for Nairaland o! The other time someone was asking " What is your GPA?" or "Did you make a 1st class, 2.1 or 2.2?" or "How many times did you write JAMB?" etc, etc. Let me use myself as an example. I wrote my WASCE and JAMB at the age of 16. Got Distinctions in all the Sciences and even an A2 in French. I also passed JAMB qualifying to go and read Medicine in one of the Western Universities the same year. Got into the university and saw Medicine wasn't for me. Changed to Microbiology and spent more time in the pub more than in the Laboratories. In final year, realised I can't live as a Microbiologist, so got disterested. Got an extra semmester( rain) because I did not write a prerequisite for Microbiology in year 1, so ended up spending extra year. Dyring NYSC, I developed interest in Accpounting because I saw a future in it, so I wrote ICAN after service. Passed Foundation first attempt, PE1 first attempt, PE2 after a re-write, PE3 failed first attempt, got a most fantastic job, was making hell of a money and never bothered to re-wrte PE3. Lost interest in the Nigerian System after getting married. Hated London (all my friends and cousins are there); Does not want America (Brothers are there for over 13 years) wanted somewhere neutral; therefore came to South Africa. Did Advanced Diploma in Financial Accounting and got Distinction; Worked in one of the Top Financial Institutions for two years decided I needed to be an employer, not an employee. Changed career into Real Estate. Passed all the Certifications and stuff, Got licenced to practice, Worked for one of the top three Real Estate Firms in SA. Was nominated Top Performer thrice in Six months. Started my own Real Estate Franchise of the Company; very successful and I enjoy my job so much I wonder why there were no career introductory stuff in Naija to guide us into the Universities because this is what I should have been doing all my life. Looking back at my career path, I realised what you read in the university, your grade, and your GPA or number of times passed does not have any bearing on your DESTINY. It is in the hand of God. I'm sure HE knew this when I was filling out my JAMB forms for Medicine and was cramming all those Archimedes Principles, Pythagors Theorem, Newton's Laws of Motion and those silly molecular formulae. Dear posters, lets pray to God to take us to our destinies, and on time. |

Meeeeeeen, Can you guys believe that I have been seeing this topic on Nairaland and never opened it until yesterday. I actually read all the contributions one-by-one, I don nearly die of laughter. This is the most interesting thread ever to be posted on Nairaland. I have never laughed like this in my life. In fact people in my office no just understand wether I don dey craze. Under seas ko, Under moon ni. |
@ English-teacher (Dis Guy) ![]() Thanks. Now I know!!!!! ![]() |
@Dis Guy what the Bleep is wrong with you read properly! on resumption as in after coming back from the hospital! he didnt fall sick on the first day of work, he is working there already! You need to read properrly or moshoodn needs to rephrase the topic. "If You Fall Sick And Gets Fired On Resumption" MEANS you fall sick when you START work. If it is your own interpretation; the topic would have been: "If You Fall Sick And Get Fired On Returning (to work)" |
@Dis Guy he said he fell sick (once), even with a certificate you can fall sick in the future duhhhh! When you start your own business, and your employee falls sick on the resumption date, send him flowers and go to the his/her sick bed to sympathise with him all day! The issue is not the truth or otherwise of the sickness, but your commitment, seriousness and attitude to your job. At least you go on the first day and can then ASK for sick-off. To me that simply shows the kind of trend I will have to deal with even after he/she resumes, and it is called absenteeism. Not going to work at the slightest excuse. What if it is a position in the office where a lot depends on you? What the f**k? How can you miss work on the first day of resumption? So after resumption, you will fall sick the more and still try to justify it that 'shebi its only once, or is it now twice?' |
I was thrilled by an action from a security girl one day.she was in the banking hall and saw a big bundle of N500 note, nobody was watching, but she picked it and took to her superior.Shortly after, a man came spitting fire that his driver he sent to the bank was underpaid by close to N200,000Was the security girl rewarded? by the bank or customer? In any case it happened to me once although it was office money. I was once sent by our office to draw 35,000+ naira from Credit Lyonnais bank down the road in 1998. The cashier wrongly paid 53,000+ (maybe she read the figures the opposite way). I did not even count but took it straight to the office and handed it over to the cashier. After making some petty cash payments she realised I brought back more money. She called me, we reconciled and realised the mistake. I had to take it back to the bank and also the teller did not even say thank you. She was heavily pregnant though, so I never minded. But I still ask myself what would I have done if na only me realise that error before delivering the cash to the office? That time I still dey below the poverty line o! But as at now, I'm sure I will return it. |
Good Day, I live and work in Johannesburg, South Africa. I am an successful Estate Agent working with one of the top 5 Real Estate companies in South Africa. Due to my success over the past one year, I have been offered the opportunity to buy and run my own independently-run franchise of the company. However, I am unable to raise the franchise fees and initial working capital of about 100,000 rands. I need help on this and I am able to pay back with good interest. Can you help? Best Regards. I need a lender to help fund a project. I am willing to repay at 50% (or more) interest guaranteed on or before six months. I am into real estate in SA. Is anyone interested? I can e mail you more info. |
here it means let's get drunk!!!!! thereafter anything can happen!!!!! |
@all the replies. You are all looking at this from the point of view of the employee. What if you're the employer? Will you hire someone who will be falling sick and play absenteeism on the job. Remember you are running a profit making organisation and not a charity/philanthropy. That's why employers should demand for health clearance certificate from doctors b/4 recruiting. ![]() |
time will help you get over him, and then you'll look back and wonder what you saw in him in the first place. On a lighter note maybe you should look for a richer guy, that will take your focus off this guy, and his money. |
u see why i like nairalanders, seun? |

@ topic Are you talking about marriage as instituted and ordained by God or marraige as insituted by the present day society and societal norms? If you go into marriage in accordance to the instructions of He who instituted it then you can be sure that you will get the best out of it; but if you base your opinion about marriage on how present day men and women (many of whom have contributed to this thread) see it; then I can assure you it will not work! Just as an example:- In this country where I live, there are three types of marriages: 1. Marriage in Community of Property - C.O.P 2. Marriage with Anti- Nuptual Contract - A.N.C with accrual 3. Marriage with Anti- Nuptual Contract - A.N.C without accrual The first one stands for the marriage in which everything the spouses own (before marring and after marrying)belong to both of them together till death do them part. No. 2 is the marriage in which as from the date of marriage, the spouses jointly own every thing together, but not what they each owned before marrying in which case, each person owns separately. No. 3 is whatever each person owns before the marriage remains his/hers and also after they are married, each person owns his own thing and nothing is jointly owned. This is to make a clear distinction amongst their property at the time of divorce and to make alimony easier in the courts. And sadly enough, the most popular marriage type is the third one, followed by the second. The first type of marriage, common amongst us west africans is actually laughed at. Now tell me what you expect from such a society where you are already thinking of, and planning for, divorce even at the time you are going into the marriage? eh? And yet their government and other social institutions foolishly complaign that the rate of divorce is high, shuo!!! And they, like the source of this thread, With apologies to the two happily married couples I’ve met in my life (one of which recently divorced), the science is clear that marriage is an antiquated social institution that likely deserves to be eradicated. Today’s world is markedly different from worlds past. We are better informed, with more objective knowledge about what’s really happening in our lives. We’ve eradicated small pox, typewriters, and sheepskin condoms… So maybe its time to eradicate an antiquated social institution founded in mythologies and traditions that simply aren’t real or relevant anymore!think they know better now than the olden days people. |
