I wonder how one is expected to maintain their sanity when faced with this kind of stress you went through.
It is like paying money to be psychologically molested because you patronized a business.
It is a lot easier for people to sit in the comfort of their homes and type away nonsense just to win an argument.
You didn't have to go through all that. A simple explanation and apology would have made some difference in your ordeal.
But not in Bollinger's world. He would rather have you shut up and stop complaining.
He was here arguing about civilization when the folks you are dealing with act like savages.
I wish I can apologize on their behalf.
Remain blessed. \ The same way you are rationalizing your insanity is the same way south africans are rationalizing theirs. To them, since the system has failed them, then they have every right to xenophobia, just as you have every right to attack aero for not providing quality customer service since the system has failed you too. Again i have to repeat that i can't believe i am explaining to supposed grown ups, about why taking the law into ones hands is wrong. The psychological makeup of the average Nigerian is frightening. |

nedu2000: I've worn glasses for well over a decade,it started with 3 diopter of short-sightedness(-3)from which it got worse (-6) by 1999,it has remained so ever since. It hasn't been easy and I sure would like to see the world in HD in my lifetime and not this'. 'NTA' standard my eyes offer. My Perils include: 1)SPORTING DRAWBACK: if you think zinedine Zidane,Eden Hazard, leo Messi are the most creative footballers then you've never seen me play, but with my eyesight I had to cool down on my football career.Infact in my University days I rarely get chosen in teams
2)ROMANTIC DRAWBACKS: There were times a got a 'moment' with some hot chics and as I was closing in for a french kiss my glasses sets up a awkward moment instead and my chance is gone! The glasses also give me this "he's cute but he's not man enough since he wears glasses!!" from girls.
3 )DOMESTIC/EVERYDAY CHALLENGES: I can't fall asleep swiftly without looking for a means to drop my glasses somewhere,if I use contacts my sparkling eyes turn red the next day,if it's raining/foggy my glasses becomes completely misty and unlike windshields, spectacles don't come with wipers
4)MISCELLAENOUS: job opportunities-i studied civil engineer but I have fewer opportunities to prove myself as a good site engineer due to stereotypes
* intimidation- I was driving around Orile in Lagos when one lanky dude tried extorting money from me,merely because he felt I was weak/gentle not until I broke his nose did he realise I wasn't weak, had to spend N2500 on his treatment
Nairalanders please is there any sort cure for shortsightedness? I heard of many side-effects in relation to the laser option! I can't believe i have to explain this; Point 1. Ever heard of Lasik or PRK? Point 2. Seriously? you missed a romantic moment because of glasses. If you have to wear glasses to kiss a lady then you are blind. Point 3. You probably bought your glasses under the bridge at ojuelegba. Prescribed glasses meant for only you should not be uncomfortable. I wear glasses, so i know. Point 4. Now i know this is MOD story. It's all made up. Point 5. More confirmation that it's a MOD story. |
Education › Re: Spending 4+ Years In A Nigerian Institution Is A Waste Of Time by Bollinger(m): 7:10pm On May 03, 2015 |
Lero15: We have so many higher institutions in Nigeria now….and the number increases almost every year. This is good, but studying a course for 4 years and above, especially most non-professional courses is what bothers me. PS: I am not advising or discouraging anyone to go abroad to study. Here are my reasons: 1. Other countries: Top countries especially in Asia and Europe, even in Africa don’t use up to 4 years for a degree. Within 5 years or less, one can have his first Degree and Masters abroad. Our polytechnics don’t make things easy these days…after OND, one year of industrial attachment (most people now do theirs in their homes…no placement) you still do “post UME” for HND admission in the same school!
2. You may not practice: Now this is rampant in Nigeria…blame it on economic condition, peer pressure, parent’s will over yours and so on. So many undergraduates are studying that particular course because that is what the school “wants” for them. So, their mindset is “let me just finish this course and find better things to do with my life”. I have two medical doctor friends, one has dropped his stethoscope for the financial sector, the other one is practicing but says he will divert soon…AFTER SEVEN YEARS?!!!
3. Jack of all Trade: One of the major reasons why it takes us donkey years to get a degree in Nigeria is this!!! Your first year in school, you do all irrelevant courses. You will probably do your main specialty in your semi-finals or final year. This is a big time-waster. Why not face your course and get better with it. Jack of all trade, master of none.
4. Graduate Trainee Jobs: If you think you are studying a course that is not marketable in Nigeria, don’t worry much. As long as you are young and you have good grades, you will be fine. Big companies, most especially in the financial sector, oil and gas, and foods and manufacturing firms train their new intakes for weeks or months. Your job roles may not be relevant with your course of study, though. Then why spend 4/5 years when u will still be trained?
5. ALMIGHTY STRIKE : Some courses slated for 4 years will turn to 7 years…no thanks to endless strikes. Chaos in school, government owing lecturers, etc… This is so appalling. Coupled with the fact that you will still serve the nation for a year, that makes it 8. That wouldn’t be nice if you started school in your twenties, would it?
This may sound subjective, but the truth be told. Spending so many years for a course is not a good sign for a developing country like Nigeria. Some lecturers just give you the same old note they used during their tenure in school. If the number of years cannot be altered, then let the educational sector be improved. There is so much “La cram La Pour” in Nigerian schools today. As it applies in America. Point 1. 4 years is the norm in America Point 2. I know 5 people who studied General Studies and work in occupations that range from banking to hotel management. Point 3. It's called common core. Point 4. You spend 4/5 years in order for your would be employer to be sure you can be trained. They need to know you have the foundation. |

InvertedHammer: / There are a lot of injustices in the world. Why do good people die? Why are Blacks treated with disdain? Why does God allow some bad things to happen to his people? Why? Why? Why?
You have to narrow it down. An airline took people's money, refused to fulfill their contractual obligations, kept.them waiting for more than 3 hrs without sending someone to explain what was going on and how they intend to ameliorate the situation. Like I said earlier, a simple explanation would have averted this problem.
An explanation that included scarcity of Jet-A1, apology and plan to refund all fares would have solved the situation. Heck. The weather was hot. The least the airline could have done was pass around complementary bottled water. A little thing goes a long way.
You don't.need a fancy degree to.manage a.Business well. Common sense.goes a long way. / You are still buttressing my point. The end never justifies the means. If we all rationalize all of our actions, the world will be a very dangerous place. If a man steals from you tomorrow and in his escape shoots one of your siblings (God forbid) and he is caught, and he starts lamenting about how he had to because there is no job and he has to feed his family, would you listen. Does the fact that he has to feed his family justify his actions for stealing? There is joke i once heard. There was a riot in town and this young man decided to join in. He saw this nice 2015 BMW driving towards him and he stops the car, beats up the owner saying, "you are one of the people stealing our money. It is my turn today". He jumps into the BMW and drives away, very pleased with himself. About a mile down the road, there is another group of rioters. They stop the car, pull him out, beat him up while saying "you are one of the people stealing our money. It is our turn today". It never advisable to take the law into one's hands. |

You are quick to blame those who had the audacity to say "enough is enough". By the way, I prefer Kimber1911 to Glock. \ If you ask an average South African why he is attacking fellow Africans he would tell you that he is fed up with other africans especially Nigerians, stealing their jobs, women, etc. If you ask one of the people who went on rampage at aero, he/she will tell you that they are fed up with aero taking them for granted. Do you see the similarities? In both situations, they took the law into their own hands. If you can condemn south africa, why can't you condemn those that went nuts at aero. So, it's not ok for south africans to take the law into their own hands but it's ok for Nigerians to do so? |

InvertedHammer: / Both of us acknowledged that the system is bad. The question is: How do you assert your rights in a broken system where the judiciary and executives are highly compromised? You advocated that they follow it the civilized way. Well civilized way doesn't work in Nigeria and even in some cases in civilized society. E.g.. Baltimore riots that made the authorities prosecute the police officers. If the people of Baltimore had decided to go to court and call it business as usual, those officers would have walked. But when the city burned, the media got involved and the Fed sat up to their responsibilities.
Aero contractors Ltd. is a private company that carries on like they own people's money. You can take them to court, the case will last for three years. And you may end up losing the case bc of Nigerian factors. They know it. But just the thought of seeing their airplanes in flames will make them do business the right way or fold up. They know the right things to do. They just chose not to do it because there are no repercussions. / Thank you for being the bigger person in starting a normal discuss. Realize this, an eye for an eye leaves everyone blind. I am also glad you mentioned Baltimore. We are facing a crisis of our own over here. Our crisis is the scourge of Liberals, lazy black people and the unfanthomable mistake of electing the first black president. It is a mistake that will forever hunt Americans. Granted all policemen are not saints but hooliganism has multiplied since Obama came into power. All that will change in the next election. The liberal democrats will not find it as easy to con us into voting for them again. You can already smell the change. Republicans swept the house in the last elections and the momentum will continue. This is my point. You hold elected representatives responsible, not private individuals and businesses. Just because we have more black thugs over here, does not mean i should pull out my Glock 42 and go about gunning down every black thug who destroys my property. Trust me, if the law abiding citizens of Baltimore wanted to, they could have started shooting down all the rioters. But what did they do? they let the authorities handle it because that is what normal people do. Did you criticize south africa for their xenophobia? Well guess what? What those people did to aero is the same thing south africans are doing, which is taking the law into their own hands just because they are frustrated with the system. |

StOla: I would conclude you don't live in Nigeria, hence your idealistic calmness.
In the reality that Nigeria offers, the only way to fight for your rights is to actually "fight".
I'll give you an instance. A certain dude went to a customer service centre of a mobile network provider. Dude calmly presents his case and was treated with levity. Dude goes outside and re-park his car in a way that obstructs every other car parked in the premises. In due time a storm gathers, but dude did not budge till he gets his issue resolved. The situation attracts the who is who of the customer service centre, who then promise to resolve the complaint tendered by the dude. Minutes later, problem is resolved and service has been provided at the cost of knowing your rights and fighting for it, even if you had to grab the provider by the balls.
This is how you get things done in Nigeria. Not some litigation suit that would gain no traction within a judicial system that is yet to prosecute armed robbery successfully after 5yrs. Again; I can't believe that i have to explain to a multitude of people why it is wrong to take laws into their own hands. It's like me trying to explain to a child that it is wrong to steal just because you are hungry. Un-freaking-believable. This is the best approach. Nigerians don't pay attention to word of mouth. Break a couple of heads, you will get some result immediately.
I don't think the passengers became unruly all of a sudden. They must have been asking questions that were met with nonchalant responses before things degenerated to this level.
Maybe next time they should ignite the airplane. \ Sad. The reason Nigerians result to jungle justice is because of the country's inability to impose confidence in it's legal system. In normal societies those people would be ecstatic that this happened because lawsuits would flow like water which in turn would mean millionaires would be made overnight. babadee1: The reason Nigeria still remains the same is because people like you have already given up on your country. Nigeria has immense resources and a great deal of potential, especially in terms of human capital. In one generation this country is going to be transformed into a true economic power house. Nigeria is the number one destination for foreign direct investment on the African continent and has one of the fastest growing economies in the world. Nigerians are extremely smart and innovative. They are the most highly educated and skilled immigrant group in the United States. The only problem Nigeria has is poor leadership and a lack of planning, look for that to change in the coming years. Imagine Nigeria is a huge mega church. The foundation of worldly christianity is hope. The hope that it will be better tomorrow while one's circumstance remain the same. The pastor/president will tell the congregation/citizens what they want to hear in other to get what he/she wants. Usually, based on the laws of statistics one or two people in the congregation/populace will succeed and those people will be used as examples of how whatever they are preaching works. This in turn galvanizes the rest to hang on to that false hope forever. You can hope for as long as you want, but if you don't change the way you operate, you will be in perpetual bondage forever. I grant you that Nigeria has immense resources and other countries are investing in Nigeria. But answer me this; how has that improved the circumstance of the average Nigerian. You have more investments, but the poor keeps getting poorer. There is a shortage of fuel right now in the country; how do you reconcile that with the "fastest growing economy in Africa?" All this is not new. This has been going on for decades and i keep hearing the same thing. "in a few years, Nigeria will change". False hope. Until you all change the way you do business nothing will change. Like, demanding to know, in a logical fashion, how promises will be made reality, not after an aspirant make president, but before. |
