Federal Government has said that the teaching of science subjects and mathematics in indigenous languages in primary and secondary schools across the country would commence soon. Director - General of the National Centre for Technology Management, Prof . Okechukwu Ukwuoma , stated this during a retreat organised for researchers in Akure , capital of Ondo State . Ukwuoma , who is a member of a committee set up to supervise the project, also disclosed that experts were contracted to translate science and mathematics terminologies to the various indigenous languages spoken in the country . He said , “ Last year , the Minister of Science and Technology and the Minister of Education inaugurated a committee to teach science and mathematics in indigenous languages . The major issue in that regard is the translation of terminologies to the languages for which we have consulted experts in different languages in the country . The don , who commended the Federal government on the idea , expressed optimism in the success of the project . He also noted that many textbooks had already been translated to some Nigerian languages through the efforts of the committee . The NACETEM boss stressed the need for researchers to contribute toward the development of science and technology in the country . He lamented the lack of good research works in the country , blaming it on the lust for quick and easy money amongst the people. “ All over the world everything about science and technology is always hard to sell because you need to convince people. Nigerians are good researchers , but they lack something . “ Many businessmen who are supposed ensure the commercialisation of research inventions prefer to buy fake ones outside the country and come back to make quick money ,” he said . However , Ukwuoma disclosed that the Federal Government had established a National Research and Innovation Fund, which would be accessed by entrepreneurs or innovators interested in developing science and technology inventions The don said , “ Information is what people need . When people lack information, they find it very difficult to find solution to some problems. So we need really to get some information about what is going on .” http://punchng.com/science-maths-teaching-in-indigenous-languages-to-begin-soon-fg/ |

Canadian telecommunications firm BlackBerry is suing Facebook, accusing the American social media company of infringing on its patents for messaging apps https://3c1703fe8d.site.internapcdn.net/newman/csz/news/800/2018/canadiantele.jpg Canadian telecommunications firm BlackBerry sued Facebook on Tuesday, accusing the American social media company of infringing on its patents for messaging apps. BlackBerry is claiming infringement on patents it holds for message encryption and notifications, and is seeking an injunction as well as damages for lost profits, although no figure was given. Facebook and its wholly-owned services Instagram and WhatsApp are named as defendants in the lawsuit. "We have a lot of respect for Facebook and the value they've placed on messaging capabilities, some of which were invented by BlackBerry," BlackBerry spokeswoman Sarah McKinney said in a statement. She said BlackBerry would like to partner with Facebrook "in our drive toward a securely connected future, and we continue to hold this door open to them." "However, we have a strong claim that Facebook has infringed on our intellectual property, and after several years of dialogue, we also have an obligation to our shareholders to pursue appropriate legal remedies," McKinney added. BlackBerry, after abandoning the manufacture of its once-popular smartphones, has refocused its core business on cybersecurity software and services. https://m.phys.org/news/2018-03-blackberry-sues-facebook-messaging-apps.html lalasticlala mynd44 |

The Independent National Electoral Commission has announced the dates of elections for the next 36 years. The Chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, released the timetable for elections from 2019 to 2055 during a meeting with the chairmen of political parties in Abuja on Wednesday. According to INEC’s arrangement, the general elections from 2019 to 2055 will hold on two days respectively as opposed to the proposal of the National Assembly which holds on three days with the following sequence: National Assembly (day one) governorship and state House of Assembly (day two) and presidential (day three). Chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu Yakubu said in other developed democracies, the dates for elections were fixed. He, therefore, stated that it was time for Nigeria to follow suit. He said, “In 2019, the dates are February 16 and March 2; in 2023, the dates are February 18 and March 4. In 2027, the dates are February 20 and March 6; in 2031, it is February 15 and March 1. “In 2035, it is February 17 and March 3; in 2039, it is February 19 and March 5 and in 2043, it will hold on February 21 and March 7. In 2047, it is February 15 and March 2; in 2051, it is February 18 and March 1; in 2055, it is February 20 and March 6.” He argued that the idea “is to engender certainty in our electoral calendar, allows for long term planning by the commission as well as stakeholders and brings our democracy in line with the best practice around the world. I am glad that this decision has received the overwhelming support of stakeholders.” On the issue of underage voting, Yakubu vowed that the commission would ensure that ineligible voters are removed from the register. He said, “The commission is determined to clean up the voter register of all ineligible registrants as provided for in section 12(1) of the electoral Act 2010 (as amended). We have displayed the list of all newly registered voters at the end of each of the three quarters of the exercise in 2017 at the various registration centres nationwide for claims and objections as required by law. We have also done the data consolidation and run the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) on all new registrants. We have carefully scrutinised the list.” He, however, pleaded with the political parties to assist the commission in the process, stressing that they had important role to play. Yakubu said the commission had received applications from 108 associations that wanted to be registered as political parties. The INEC boss, however, revealed that 66 associations had failed the initial assessment and had been advised accordingly and none had responded so far. “Thirty-three associations have passed the initial assessment and were formally advised to proceed to the next stage while nine associations are at the final stages of the process,” he said. On the coming Ekiti and Osun governorship polls, Yakubu appealed to political parties to ensure that proactive steps were taken to ensure free and fair primaries. The political parties under the umbrella of Inter-Party Advisory Council commended the INEC boss for setting the dates for future elections. They said organising and undertaking elections remained the exclusive preserve of INEC. The Chairman of IPAC, Mohammed Nalado, said the issue was a constitutional one and not until the laws were amended, “INEC’s order of election stands under the existing law.” He said,” I think this is a constitutional issue. What INEC has done at the moment is based on what is in the provision of the constitution. If there is any law that supersedes what they have done, that law is not to be abandoned. So, we stand on the same page. So, we have to be working together, INEC, political parties and all the stakeholders in the democratic development.” But the House of Representatives reacted to the announcement, saying that INEC would see itself as performing its duties until the new amendments to the Electoral Act 2010 came into effect. The Chairman, House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Mr. Abdulrazak Namdas, told The PUNCH that the National Assembly was waiting for President Muhammadu Buhari to sign the new bill. He explained that after the President’s signature and the bill became law, INEC would have no option but to comply. Namdas added, “If the President signs the bill, INEC will have to comply. If they fail to comply, they can only go to the judiciary as the last resort. “So, the House can’t take issues with INEC over a law that is not in operation as yet. They are doing their work and we are doing our job as a legislature, which is law making.” http://saharareporters.com/2018/03/01/inec-releases-general-election-dates-next-36-years |

The Ogun State Police Command has launched a manhunt for an Islamic cleric, identified only as Raheem , for allegedly killing a co- tenant , Monday Olaleye, aka Messiah. The duo, who lived in a house on Adebayo Close, in the Ibafo , Obafemi Owode Local Government Area of the state, reportedly had a disagreement which degenerated to fisticuffs. The fight, which occured on Sunday , February 11 , started after 49 - year - old Olaleye demanded the N60 contribution of Raheem for the replacement of a burnt electric fuse . Olaleye was appointed by other tenants to collect funds for the purchase of the new fuse , valued at N 600 . During the fight, Raheem , aka Alfa, was alleged to have hit Olaleye with a stick , while the victim used a plastic chair to fight back. Both men were reportedly injured . The next day, Olaleye’ s health condition deteriorated and he was rushed to a private hospital where he was confirmed dead . The deceased ’s family members were said to have reported the case at the Ibafo Police Station . PUNCH Metro learnt that neighbours, who got wind of a possible mass arrest, fled the house . When our correspondent visited the community on Thursday , he observed that the house had been locked up . Residents approached for information either declined comment or feigned ignorance of the incident. However , PUNCH Metro established contact with a few of the runaway tenants ,who spoke on condition of anonymity . A father of two said the police locked up the house when they did not meet anyone , adding that they left with three generators belonging to tenants . He said , “ I remember the two men had a disagreement over payment for a burnt electrical fuse. which was valued at N600 . We are 10 tenants in the house occupying the 10 single room apartments . We divided the money and everybody was asked to pay N60 . “ I was sleeping when I heard a noise . I was indisposed and couldn ’ t go out. But I learnt there was a fight between Alfa and Messiah over the fuse money . Within a few minutes, it was over and everybody dispersed . “ By morning , the man woke up , took his bath , drew water from the well , and prepared a meal which he ate. But around 12 noon, we observed that his door was ajar . I heard heavy breathing and rallied other tenants to get him to a hospital .” Another tenant said no one knew the victim was ill until a family member visited him. He noted that the relative raised the alarm , blaming the neighbours for being uncaring . He said , “ After we settled the dispute between him and Alfa, everybody left for their apartments. They were both OK . Messiah was a painter and he rarely went out . We all saw him do his chores that morning ; nobody suspected anything until someone said he was breathing abnormally . A relative who visited him around 12 noon queried us for not checking up on him. “ We didn’t get a vehicle on time to convey him to a hospital . We later got one. The medical workers did not allow us to take him down from the vehicle before they said he was dead . Inasmuch as I find it difficult to connect his death to the fight , some people said he might have had internal bleeding.” PUNCH Metro gathered that the news of the death sent fear into the community, as many residents took to their heels . The prime suspect ,Raheem , who had gone to work, reportedly did not return to the house . A female tenant said later that evening , the police arrived in the community in a bus. “ They broke Alfa’ s apartment and took some things away . They also locked up the entire house after carrying away three generators . As I speak to you, most of the tenants are squatting with friends and family members . We have nowhere to go ,” she said . A senior police officer from the Ibafo division said it was a murder case , adding that it had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department , Eleweran , Abeokuta . He urged the victim ’s neighbours to come forward and assist the police with information. “ The suspect hit the man with a stick and he died. It is a murder case, ” he added. The state Police Public Relations Officer , Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed the incident. He said , “ There was a fight between the two tenants on Monday and in the process, one of them died. All the tenants in the house fled ; nobody reported to the police . It was when the victim ’s relatives arrived from Lagos that they met his corpse in the house . That was how the police knew about it. “ When we got there , we didn’ t see anybody ; the house was deserted . The police found two generators on the corridor and because it was not safe to leave them there , they decided to secure them by taking them to the station. We have not seen any of the tenants since then . The state Commissioner of Police, Ahmad Iliyasu , has ordered that the suspect be made to face the full wrath of the law . ” http://punchng.com/alfa-kills-co-tenant-over-n60-house-bill/

The Nigerian Army has placed a bounty of N3 million on Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau. In a statement released yesterday by the Army spokesperson, Sani Usman, anyone with credible information is encouraged to speak out. Read the statement below The Nigerian Army will give out Three Million Naira (N3,000,000.00k) cash reward for any credible information that leads to the arrest of Abubakar Shekau, the fugitive factional Boko Haram terrorists’ group leader. Anybody with such credible information can either contact the Military Command and Control Centre, Operation LAFIYA DOLE, any military location, agencies or call the Nigerian Army Information and Call Centre 193. The army said on Tuesday that credible information from arrested and surrendered insurgents indicated that Shekau could “ not bear the heat anymore as he has abandoned his followers , he is running for his dear life. ” “ He is desperately trying to escape the theatre disguised as a woman dressed in Hijab. We reliably gathered that to avoid detection Abubakar Shekau alternates between blue and black coloured hijabs ,” Usman said in a statement. Shekau has been on the list of hundred most wanted Boko Haram members since October 2015. He appeared in a video earlier this month with a vow to sustain the insurgents’ violent campaigns , which began in 2009, in Nigeria’s northeast. “ The person that believes in nationalism is the one we are at war with ,the person who believes in disseminating western education , which is replete with unbelief, is the one we fight” , Shekau said in the 11 - minute video. The video was released a couple of days after the commander of the troops fighting the terror group claimed that the group had been totally defeated. https://t.guardian.ng/news/nigerian-army-places-n3m-bounty-on-abubakar-shekau/ |

One out of 5 restaurants or food stores in south east London is owned by either Yoruba or Igbo or Calabar or Edo person. Last week, a young Hausa man opened a shop called Alhaji Suya and I am very sure that he is the first and only Hausa man to open a restaurant in the whole of the UK. I rarely come across Hausa/Fulani people hustling in the streets of London or working in any organisation in the UK except those working in Nigerian embassy or those studying in the UK universities through their state or federal government sponsorships and they hardly stay after the completion of their studies. I was impressed to see this friendly and hardworking young Hausa man, an MSc holder of the University of Greenwich, London, promoting one of the Nigerian delicacy in London. If you are in London or planning to come to London, the address is 15 Peckham Park Road, London, SE15 6TR. https://mobile.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=1884890594863989&id=100000291995582&refid=8&ref=opera_speed_dial_freefb&_ft_=qid.6521597399488989015%3Amf_story_key.-5511810074358391634%3Atop_level_post_id.10216086631942168%3Asrc.22&__tn__=CH-R
