The House of Representatives is currently in a rowdy session over President Muhammadu Buhari’s decision to declare June 12 as Nigeria’s Democracy Day. While some lawmakers supported it, others asked the president to rescind his decision. Some of the lawmakers also kicked against the honour given to Moshood Abiola, the presumed winner of the June 12,1993 presidential election. Some lawmakers who also spoke on the issue said there is need to ensure the rule of law is followed regarding the matter, while others spoke in favour of the president’s decision. Details later….. https://www.tori.ng/userfiles/image/2018/jun/07/Abuja-MKO-1.jpg https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/271465-breaking-reps-in-rowdy-session-over-june-12-democracy-day-declaration.html |
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says the national honour proposed to be conferred on the acclaimed winner of June 12, 1993, Chief MKO Abiola, by President Muhammadu Buhari, smacks of hypocrisy and political desperation ahead of 2019 presidential election. PDP declares that President Buhari's action merely sought to use the name and person of Chief Abiola to gain a political capital and not out of genuine reverence and recognition for him. The party recalls that President Buhari, who was serving in the military administration of General Sani Abacha during the travails of Chief MKO Abiola, did not associate either by words or actions with the late winner of June 12 election. The party further stated that history did not record President Buhari as sympathetic to the Abiola's family when his wife, Kudirat, was gruesomely murdered by the agents of a government which President Buhari served. It is therefore a sign of political desperation for President Buhari to seek to use Chief Abiola's name as a tool to sway Nigerians in less than twelve months to an election where he, (President Buhari) is seeking a second term. It is also shocking that the respectable grave of Abiola can be dishonoured by granting a posthumous award on him along with someone who denounced the June 12 mandate and preferred the company of his (Abiola's) traducers. Even those who now masquerade as change agents were opposed to the naming of University of Lagos after Chief Abiola. If President Buhari genuinely wants to honour Chief Abiola, he should do so by ending all anti-democratic proclivities of his administration and allow for the rule of law and respect for our constitution. The PDP therefore urges President Buhari to shed his desperate actions in his quest to win the 2019 presidential election as Nigerians can no longer be deceived by such antics. The bridge at the Children’s Amusement Park located at the Ikemba Ojukwu Centre in Owerri, Imo, built by Gov. Rochas Okorocha’s administration has collapsed. Witnesses at the scene told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Owerri on Wednesday that nobody was killed or injured in the incident. The incident which caused pandemonium in the area, gave room for criticism by some parents whose children visited the place on May 27 during the 2018 Children’s Day Celebration. A NAN Correspondent, who visited the scene, reports that the incident occurred after a heavy downpour on Tuesday night. The bridge, being a major tourism site, has been used to generate funds for the state government. When contacted, the State Commissioner for Happiness and Purpose Fulfillment, Mrs Ogechi Ololo, told NAN that she had yet to be briefed on the cause of the incident. Mr Collins Ibe, who witnessed the incident, told NAN that the windstorm that accompanied the downpour might be responsible for the collapsed of the bridge. Another witness, Mrs Mary Nlemadim, said: “It is unfortunate that this is happening in the state, especially at a place that is supposed to be a recreation centre. “I thank God that it happened in the night when people were not around; otherwise, there might have been casualties. “I urge the state government and engineers working on construction projects in the state to be more dedicated and thorough,” she said. Also, an Engineer, Mr Okechukwu Uba said: “There is need to critically look at all the construction projects going on in the state. “This is necessary to avoid unnecessary waste of resources, time and human capacity. “These projects need to get proper approval from professional hands or bodies; they also need to be properly supervised by qualified and experienced personnel. “Again, they have to be done systematically and not many things at the same time. “These projects need to be finished up in a tidy manner and subjected to stress tests where necessary, before being opened to the public,’’ he said. NAN reports that the state Chairman of the Nigeria Society of Engineers, Mr Emeka Ugoanyawu, had earlier warned against substandard engineering work in the state. Also, the National President of Council for the Regulation of Engineers in Nigeria (COREN) Mr Kashim Ali, had recently faulted the quality of a flyover constructed by the Okorocha administration, located at Orji. Ali, as a matter of urgency, urged Gov. Okorocha, to stop work on the flyover. -NAN https://www.tori.ng/news/98380/confusion-as-another-bridge-built-by-governor-roch.html

After marathon meeting between the House of Representatives and the Senate, the National Assembly on Tuesday listed conditions for peace between the legislature and the executive arms of government. The lawmakers, arising from the over two hours closed meeting, also threatened to invoke their constitutional powers should the President fail to adhere to the resolutions as they passed a vote of no confidence on the Inspector General of police, Idris Ibrahim. Here are the resolutions: Senate President Bukola Saraki reports that at the joint session, the National Assembly resolved as follows: 1. The Security Agencies must be given marching orders to contain all the sustained killings of Nigerians and protect the lives and properties of Nigerians — as this is the primary duty for any responsible government. 2. The systemic harassment by the executive of perceived political opponents — people with contrary opinions in the legislature and the judiciary — by the police and other security agencies must stop. 3. There must be strict adherence to the rule of law and protection for all citizens by the President and all his appointees. 4. The President must be held accountable for the actions of his appointees and must be ready to sanction, those that carry out any act, that will ridicule or endanger the country and our democracy. 5. The government should show sincerity in the fight against corruption by not being selective and also prosecute current appointees that have cases pending against them. 6. The sanctity of the National Assembly should be protected and preserved by the federal government and prosecute those who invaded the Senate to seize the mace. 7. Democratic elections must be competitive and inclusive by removing the current reign of fear and intimidation — particularly as we approach the forthcoming 2019 elections. 8. The National Assembly will liaise with the international community through the IPU, the APU, ECOWAS Parliament, Pan-African Parliament, EU, US Congress and the United Nations to secure our democracy. The National Assembly will also engage with civil society organizations trade unions and NGOs to further deepen and protect our democracy. 9. The President must take immediate steps to curtail the growing level of poverty and unemployment in Nigeria — especially now that we have an advantage of high oil prices. 10. Both chambers of the National Assembly hereby pass a vote of confidence on the Senate President, the Speaker and the entire leadership of the National Assembly. 11. We also hereby reaffirm our earlier resolution on the vote of no confidence on the Inspector General of Police, who does nothing but preside over innocent Nigerians with an outright disregard for constitutional authority of both the executive and the legislature. 12. The National Assembly will not hesitate to invoke its constitutional powers if nothing is done to address the above resolutions passed today. https://www.tori.ng/news/98232/breaking-news-national-assembly-list-resolutions-a.html |
Punch columnist, Azuka has examined the chances of success of President Muhammadu Buhari in the next presidential election Last week, President Muhammadu Buhari marked his third year in office as Nigeria celebrated 19 unbroken years of the Fourth Republic. With that, Buhari has one year left of his Presidency unless he is re-elected in 2019. However, the question is: What are the chances of Buhari being re-elected? To his camp, Buhari’s re- election is a fait accompli, as there is nobody in the Nigerian political terrain that is capable of defeating him. But the facts on the ground do not seem to support that. In 2003, 2007 and 2011 when Buhari contested under the platforms of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (twice) and the Congress for Progressive Change (once), he could not win the presidential election, because his popularity was restricted to the North-West and North- East. The map used in 2011 to represent the states won by the three top candidates was very instructive. The Nigerian map was divided into two with the top part painted in blue to depict the states won by Buhari, while the lower but larger part was painted in red to depict the states won by Dr Goodluck Jonathan. OsunState in the South-West, painted in yellow and looking like Lesotho inside the map of South Africa, was won by Mallam Nuhu Ribadu of the Action Congress of Nigeria. Buhari won the seven states of the North-West with four of the six states of the North-East as well as Niger State in the North-Central. Jonathan triumphed because he won all but one state of the North-Central as well as two states in the North-East (Adamawa and Taraba). In addition, he had a good outing in the North-West and North-East where Buhari won, garnering a total of 8,351,472 votes in the North as against Buhari’s 11,691,355. Conversely, while Jonathan got 13,890,271 votes in the South, Buhari got a meagre 391,922 votes. By 2015, Buhari was able to overcome that impediment for the first time by having the upper hand in the North-Central and South-West states, with a good showing in Edo State in the South-South. So his support base got a more national outlook in 2015. The reason was simple: In 2014, Buhari’s CPC merged with the ACN, ANPP and a faction of the All Progressive Grand Alliance to form the All Progressives Congress. That helped to make Buhari attractive in the North- Central and the South-West. Even though corruption was a big campaign issue in 2015, lack of victory over Boko Haram was the biggest albatross of Jonathan. The more people were killed or abducted, the more Jonathan was seen as incapable of being the President of Nigeria. There was the belief that a retired military general like Buhari would solve the Boko Haram problem better if elected. Upon Buhari’s assumption of office on May 29, 2015, it seemed as if Boko Haram intensified its killing campaign. But one year after, there was a clear sign that Boko Haram was no longer as dangerous and destructive as it was before 2015. Even though Boko Haram still kills people in Nigeria, the group’s capacity to cause mayhem has been reduced drastically. However, while Nigerians were heaving a sigh of relief on the milestone recorded against Boko Haram, another monster surfaced. This group is called the killer herdsmen. This group has concentrated its killing spree in the North-Central part of Nigeria, although it still operates in the North-West, North-East and occasionally in the South-West, South-East and South- South. Almost on a daily basis, dozens of people are massacred in their homes or farms or worship places in different villages, towns and states. Their homes are destroyed and set ablaze. Their farms suffer the same fate. It seems the killers are eager to wipe out these ethnic groups. Surprisingly, in contrast to its hard stance on the Boko Haram, the Buhari administration has treated the herdsmen’s menace as “communal clashes” between peripatetic herdsmen and farmers who are deemed not hospitable and tolerant of their compatriots. There has not been visible anger from the government against these killings. Beyond the platitudes from the Presidency occasionally when these killings occur, there is nothing concrete done to ensure that these killings don’t continue. In addition to not being able to protect those who have been victims of these killer herdsmen, the security agencies have been accused of disarming the locals and ensuring that they do not have even machetes with which to protect themselves when attacked. Some top retired military officers from the zones under attack, like Lt. Gen. Theophilus Danjuma (retd.) have frontally accused the “armed forces” of colluding with the killers to wipe them out. The invasion of a Roman Catholic church in Benue State in April to kill two priests and 17 parishioners helped to solidify the view that the killings had more to do with ethnic cleansing than grazing rights. The same way Jonathan was seen as weak on the issue of Boko Haram killings is the way Buhari is now seen as weak on the killer herdsmen’s issue. Buhari’s case is even worse because it is seen more as negligence and collusion than weakness. Gradually, Buhari seems to be returning to the image he had before becoming the torchbearer of the APC in 2015. His approval rating has recently dropped to below 40 per cent. The area known as the Middle Belt (which comprises the North-Central and some parts of the North-West and North-East) is the key victim of these killings. The voters in this zone helped to sway the victory to Buhari in 2015. Today, most of them are not happy with Buhari because of the way he has handled the killings in their zone. The question is if they will vote for Buhari again the way they did in 2015. If they don’t, then Buhari’s re-election bid will be at risk. The other critical group is the South-West, where Buhari won all the states except Ekiti State. The popularity of Buhari has not nosedived in the South- West but it has dropped significantly. Some of those who worked for Buhari’s victory in 2015 have shifted their support. The House of Assembly by-election held over the weekend in Oyo State, an APC stronghold, but won by the PDP was an indicator that the APC is no longer as popular as it was. In addition, excluding politicians who move from the PDP to the APC for pecuniary reasons and relevance, it is rare to find an opinion moulder who was against Buhari in 2015 but has become his supporter today. But it is easy to see those who worked vigorously for Buhari’s victory in 2015 lament how he has disappointed them. Also, some of the top politicians like the Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, and some former governors who moved from the PDP to the APC and helped to sway votes in their states for Buhari, have become disgruntled with the APC because of the alleged unfair deal they have received. Buhari’s acts of omission and commission have had a dent on his popularity. Therefore, anybody saying that Buhari’s re-election next year is a done deal is swimming in an ocean of self-deceit. Whoever the Peoples Democratic Party nominates will have an impact on whether Buhari wins or not. But if Buhari loses in 2019, it will not be so much because the PDP candidate is a wonderful candidate. It will be because Buhari and the APC promised the nation so much, raised the hopes of the people and secured their votes but departed from most of those promises, replacing the promises with an urn of excuses. Nigeria will be called a genuine democracy when it is capable of voting out a party and voting in another party in a continuous cycle. That way, parties and candidates will learn never to take the people for granted. -Twitter @BrandAzuka azonwuka@yahoo.com 0809-8727-263 (sms only) |

Following the incessant call for well rounded, entrepreneurship-oriented, as well as employable youths, Caro Favoured School, Awodi-Ora, Lagos, is set to join schools across Africa to compete in Junior Achievement Nigeria’s National Company of the Year Competition, slated for June. Its students, ranging from ages 15 to 17 years, have invented a hand-held rechargeable traffic light under the their independently set-up company, Inventive Explorers. Comprising of 33 students, all in Senior Secondary 2, executives of the company; Chibuike Jacob, Osinachi Daniel, Somto Nwachukwu, Emmanuel Anyanwu, Blessing Omosebi, Uchechukwu Obi, Uchechukwu Fredricks, Chizaram Igwe, to mention a few, shared their experience at being inventors and balancing work, school, family and play, with being innovative entrepreneurs, under the supervision of their Co- ordinator, Ebuka Ughamadu who is also the Managing Director of the school. How was this idea born? It was a collective effort, they all contributed one idea or the other. Jacob birthed the idea of the hand- held traffic light and they all chipped in one thing or the other. Blessing brought the idea that the device should be rechargeable, Somto improved on the conventional red and green light and suggested they spell out STOP in red and GO in green. Uchechukwu Obi chipped in that the prototype hand- held was too bulky for the average hand, so they worked on that, while Osinachi insisted on high quality LED bulbs for optimum visibility at night. This enables the traffic signals to be visible as far as 20 meters during the day and 50 meters at night. For durability and avoiding adverse reflection during night use, as well as moisture, Emmanuel recommended the use of Acrylic glass, a transparent termoplastic. How does it work? It can be turned on by simply flicking the switch either ways or off with a light push using the thumb. As it is, improvements are constantly being made. Initially, with the prototype, the battery lasted just 90 minutes when charged, now it has been improved to charge for 90 minutes and last three hours with continued usage. We also did a test run at Boundary Road, in Ajegunle, with the traffic wardens. They liked the device, particularly its portability and its zero likelihood of malfunctioning, however, they suggested we make the signs visible both ways so the user does not have to keep turning around for motorists to see the signs. This enhancement they will also effect. Is the device’s market not just the government? Here one of the executives, Osinachi said; “besides government employed traffic wardens, we are targeting, schools, places of worship, event centres, eatries, banks, companies, businees places, markets and anywhere there is movement of vehicles and pedestrians in considerable number or high frequency. Hence, the innovation, due to its portability, can be used by school security to control traffic thereby aiding students cross the road safely to school and back. It can also help company or event centre security agents control traffic when their vehicles tribute into major roads from their premises. It is for everyone, be they public or private.” What challenges did you face whilst executing this innovation? To this Uchechukwu Fredricks said; “Getting high quality LED bulbs was really tough. Fortunately we found them and have established a relationship with a supplier who delivers whenever we need them. Time was also a challenge as we could only work after exams.” Chizaram then disclosed; “Capital was a challenge because as students we do not have money. We resulted to making home-made scouring powder from egg shells, detergent and ashes we got from street food vendors. We sold the scouring powder to our neighbours at home to generate capital. We also organised film shows after exams for our school mates for a token fee.” What does Caro Favoured School hope to gain from this? Ughamadu said; “It is entirely their project, the company is theirs and registered in their name. The proceeds from the innovation and from participating in the competition would also entirely go to them. Basically, we know this competition will gear them towards entrepreneurship. It has given them an idea of how businesses are set up and run. Learning at this early stage means that they know that they have a part to play in the scheme of things, they have also come to know that the way to survive and excel in the business world is to continually add value. In all we are seeking to have well rounded students who are entrepreneurship oriented.” The competition’s organisers, Junior Achievement Nigeria, is a part of Junior Achievement Worldwide, the world’s largest and fastest growing non-profit economic education organization with a 120-country network, that has reached over 700,000 students in over 1,000 schools. The National Company of the Year Competition is designed to inspire innovation in students through entrepreneurship. It involves the creation and management of innovative enterprises with business models that respond to the students’ local environment and provide positive impact in the community. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2018/05/students-invent-hand-held-traffic-light-ease-congestion/ mynd44 UjSizzle mkmyers45

The Governor of Imo state, Rochas Okorocha, has told some political stakeholders at the state government house in Owerri that he will succeed President Muhammadu Buhari. https://www.tori.ng/userfiles/image/2018/apr/16/Governor-Rochas-Okorocha.jpg Gov. Rochas Okorocha While speaking when political leaders, women and youth groups, as well as traditional rulers on Monday, Imo State governor, Rochas Okorocha, assured the supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) that his Chief of Staff, Uche Nwosu has what it takes to win the 2019 governorship election. The influential politician who made the disclose when the crowd came to endorse Nwosu at the GovernmentnHouse, said that he would want to hand over to a governor that will discriminate against any zone but will see the entire state as one deserving of equal attention. He assured that Nwosu will win the 2019 governorship election, irrespective of the objections of the political ‘bigwigs’, adding that the power to elect a governor resides with the people and not few political elites and godfathers, adding that, “I have no doubt that Nwosu will win the governorship election considering his pedigree and humble background” . According to the governor, “Nwosu has learnt the ropes and is better qualified than any other aspirant. Nwosu is the least of the political children I have trained but I don’t know any of them as much as I have known Nwosu, I took him up when he was just nobody and he grew to the height he is now, his only sin is that he is my son-in-law, how about the Njemanze’s, the Bishops from Egbu, they occupy every position in Egbu without considering who and where they came from” . He continued that, “Nwosu will win in 2019, don’t be afraid , I am there, I have retired the Arthur Nzeribes, the Udenwas, now I will retire the rest of them finally, I know them and they know me, their plan is to push me so that they can get the Senate, it’s a lie, i will run for the Senate as well”. Speaking on President Muhammadu Buhari’s declaration for a second term, Governor Okorocha assured that “he will win again, just like he did in 2015”. He said, “Buhari will win again and again, after Buhari, the turn will come to South East and it will be the turn of Okorocha” https://www.tori.ng/news/93887/ill-succeed-buhari-okorocha-declares-in-owerri.html |

The three-pronged focus of the current administration resonated through the conversation, as President Muhammadu Buhari held a bilateral meeting with British Prime Minister, Theresa May today at 10, Downing Street, London. "We campaigned on three major issues, to secure the country, revive the economy and fight corruption,” said the President. “We have elections next year, politicians are already preoccupied with the polls, but I am bothered more about security and the economy," he stressed. Recalling that Nigeria and Britain have a long history of cooperation on several fronts, President Buhari stated: "People ought to know how they arrived where they are, if they would move forward. It was a mistake for us to have stopped the teaching of history as a subject in schools, but we are returning it to the curriculum now." He commended British companies like Unilever, Cadbury, and many others, "who have stood with Nigeria through thick and thin. Even when we fought a Civil War, they never left. "But like Oliver Twist , we ask for more investments. We are encouraging more British companies to come to Nigeria. We appreciate the support you have given in training and equipping our military, particularly in the war against insurgency, but we want to also continue to work with you on trade and investment." President Buhari briefed Prime Minister May on the strides in agriculture, which he said has put Nigeria firmly on the road to food self-sufficiency. "I am very pleased with the successes in agriculture," he said, adding: "We have cut rice importation by about 90%, made lots of savings of foreign exchange, and generated employment. People had rushed to the cities to get oil money, at the expense of farming. But luckily, they are now going back to the farms. Even professionals are going back to the land. We are making steady progress on the road to food security." On education, President Buhari said more investment was being made, because "people can look after themselves if well educated. In this age of technology, education is very important. We need well-staffed and well-equipped institutions to move into the next generation." Climate change and environmental issues also came up for discussion, and President Buhari brought up the necessity of inter-basin water transfer from Congo Basin to Lake Chad. According to him: "The Lake Chad is now about 10% of its original size, and it is perhaps one of the reasons our youths dare both the Sahara Desert and the Mediterranean, to get to Europe. But if there is inter-basin water transfer, about 40 million people in Nigeria, Niger, Cameroon, Chad, and other countries stand to benefit. I made the case during the Climate Change Summit in France. If Lake Chad is recharged, it will reduce the number of youths coming to Europe to increase social problems. We brought back about 4,000 people from Libya recently. Almost all of them were below 30, and Libya was not their final destination. They were headed to Europe." Prime Minister May, in her remarks, said Britain would continue to work with Nigeria in the areas of training and equipping the military. She was particular about abduction of young schoolgirls by Boko Haram, noting that Britain would continue to give Nigeria needed assistance. The Prime Minister said the Buhari administration has "been making good progress on the economy," and urged it to maintain the focus, despite approaching elections, and increase in political activities. On education and climate change, she declared: "Good grounding in education is good. It is important to equip young people for today's world. It is also a good bastion and defence against modern slavery. The issue of the environment and climate change is very important, because of its impact on many countries in the Commonwealth. Stability at home is important, to curb illegal migration." Prime Minister May, who commended President Buhari for the much he has been doing on improving trade and business for Nigeria, noted that it was also time to boost intra-Commonwealth trade. http://punchng.com/politicians-preoccupied-with-elections-im-bothered-about-security-economy-buhari-tells-may/ |
