The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has seized gold worth about $3, 131, 412.39 (N1, 127, 308, 460.39) being allegedly exported to Dubai, United Arab Emirates, illegally. It named one Abba Ali Yahaya as the brain behind the deal. Apart from impounding his passport, about €112,000 undeclared by Abba, has also been forfeited over alleged violation of the nation’s Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act. The precious metal was handed over to the suspect by a syndicate of illegal miners operating in Zamfara State. The anti-graft agency is already on the trail of four members of the said syndicate said to have perfected ways of beating security agencies at the nation’s airports. According to a document sighted by our correspondent, the suspect, who admitted to be a courier, was arrested at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport by EFCC operatives led by a crack female detective. It was gathered that the suspect had escaped being caught by all the screening machines at the airport. The fact-sheet indicated that “the suspect was caught following a tip off after he had managed to pass through all the screening machines without being caught. “He was in possession of N1.1b worth of gold while travelling alone to meet with the Dubai end of a ring of buyers of illegal miners. Being illegally in possession of the gold was a violation of Minerals and Mines Act. “Abba had €112, 000 on him which he hid from Customs and he was caught with 19 ATM cards. Upon interrogation, he admitted he is a courier and he fingered a businessman. Our detectives later discovered that the suspect only implicated the businessman as a decoy. “The EFCC is already on the trail of four suspects connected with massive illegal mining activities in Zamfara and exportation of mines. Preliminary evidence has linked the suspect with a miner in Zamfara. “We have confiscated the passport of the suspect, seized the gold and the €112,000 he strapped into his body will be 100 per cent automatically forfeited to the Federal Government as contained in the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act. “The EFCC will file application before a Federal High Court for the forfeiture of the undeclared cash. The suspect is empowered by law to travel with about $10,000. “So far, Abba has been released on bail pending the conclusion of investigation.” As at press time, it was gathered that a probe of how the suspect scaled through the scanning points without being detected was ongoing. A government source added: “It was embarrassing that we have many screening and scanning machines being managed by different security agencies but they were unable to detect the suspect. “We are suspecting connivance with the suspect by some of the officials at different points. It is likely that the syndicate sending the suspect to Dubai might have penetrated the security opperators at the airport. “At the end of our discreet investigation, we will be able to find out how he beat the security network at the airport.” https://www.tori.ng/news/108302/efcc-seizes-n11-billion-gold-at-abuja-airport-goes.html |

Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, on Saturday appealed to all Nigerians to join forces with government to combat the menace of fake news. The minister made the appeal while speaking at the inaugural lecture of the Guild of Professional Bloggers of Nigeria (GPBN) in Lagos with the theme of the lecture was “Combating Fake News in the Cyberspace”. Mohammed said the collective efforts of all Nigerians were needed in view of the threats fake news posed to peace and unity of the country. He explained that most of the security issues confronting the country, such as herders/farmers were caused by the misrepresentation of facts in both the mainstream and social media. “The media have a responsibility to verify the facts before they share, because once they share, it is always very difficult to retract. You see most of the issues we have about herders/farmers clashes, killings are being fuelled by fake news. Look at the farmers/ herders’ clashes, the truth is that they are being caused largely by population explosion, climate change and pure criminality. So, it has nothing to do with religion or ethnicity. Nigeria at Independence only had 45 million people but today, we are 190 million people. You can imagine the same water, same air and same arable land available for 45 million people at Independence are now being shared by 190 million people. It is like a room that can take 45 people, you now bring 190 people, you can imagine what will happen. So, that is the honest truth about population explosion. Then, the other is climate change. We read about earthquakes and flooding in different parts of the world. These are manifestations of climate change. So, how does it affect Nigeria? The Lake Chad that used to cover a surface area of 25,000sq km and 35 million people from six nations, including Nigeria, Cameroon and Chad depend on the water for fishing, agriculture, irrigation and so on. The same water has shrunk to 2000 sq km. So, these 35 million people have to look for water elsewhere. That is why we have all these clashes. Of course, I must state the issue of criminality too, but we must stop presenting the issues as if it is Muslims against Christians or Hausas against Ibos. That’s not true. So, we should stop this narrative of Christians/Muslims or North/South. We are dealing with pure criminality, population explosion and climate change and that is the way we should look at it. If we continue to post fake news attributing different reasons to the real causes of these issues, a stage will come when Muslims wil be suspicious of Christians, Christians become suspicious of Muslim for no reason. And that is not good for our unity,” he said. The minister said the government was partnering different media organisations to check the problem of fake news. He listed some of them as the News Agency of Nigeria, Nigeria Television Authority, Vanguard Newspapers and Television Continental (TVC) Mohammed said the government was also collaborating with local and international social media platforms such as Facebook and WhatsApp to tackle the problem of fake news. He described bloggers as critical stakeholders in the media industry in view of their number and capacity to influence others. While stating the readiness of government to collaborate with them on the threats of fake news, the minister urged them to uphold the ethics of the profession to ensure they disseminate only credible information. https://www.nan.ng/news/fake-news-fuels-crisis-in-nigeria-lai-mohammed/ |

A couple - Sun Mingming and his wife Xu Yan from China - are the tallest married couple in the world according to Guinness World Records. Mingming, 33, stands tall at 7ft 8.98" while his wife, Xu Yan, 29, is more than a foot smaller - but still incredibly tall - at 6ft 1.74". The couple has a jaw-dropping combined height of more than 13ft 10". The pair are (unsurprisingly) sports stars in their home country - Mingming is a basketball player while Yan plays handball. They met at the National Games of China in 2009 and married in Beijing on 4 August 2013. When the pair visited the Guinness World Records' UK headquarters, they shared their words of wisdom for a happy marriage. "No one is perfect, therefore you need to support one another on a daily basis," said Mingming. He also revealed the height-related difficulties facing the pair. "Everyday tasks such as traveling by car, plane or getting a room in a hotel do prove difficult, but we’re used to these problems," he added. https://www.tori.ng/userfiles/image/2018/apr/09/mingming.jpg https://www.tori.ng/userfiles/image/2018/apr/09/mingming1.JPG https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5-CrXqvAGWk |

The Peoples Democratic Party presidential candidate insinuated the allegations against him are mere rumours. He revealed this through the spokesman of the Atiku Campaign Organisation, Segun Sowunmi while speaking on a TV show - Sunrise Daily on Channels TV today, 12th of October, 2018. "The United States Senate has a very big idea that every rumour must be investigated and they also have following on investigation, an idea that justice must be done if errors have happened. Had anything been proven, it will not be left in the realm of conjecture" he said. He went on to explain that the U.S Special Investigative Committee conducted investigations on many issues regarding international money transfers due to the prevalent spate of terrorism then. He further said Atiku was investigated at that time because the Americans were suspecting Muslim individuals moving money in the country because of terrorism financing. He concluded that the investigation later failed to indict Atiku. "To their (U.S Senate) own surprise, they later found out that there was so such thing (terrorism financing) around that (Atiku's financial transactions) ... What was happening that in a bid to pay the faculty leaders of the American University, money was moving here and there to pay them and some of these monies which are obviously coming in for those university and facilities were monies he was looking for from some of his investments all over. The money wasn't stacked up in one account and he was just throwing it there. No! He was looking for the money, if he makes a bit of money in one business, he puts it there" he added. One the Siemens bribery scandal, he also said: "The business ethics of nations are different; what they say they gave or didn't give to a wife or a girlfriend or a sister or a cousin of anybody cannot be directly traced to me. It's like saying that someone said he gave me money and just because I'm friendly with Ajuri (the interviewer), I got the bribe on behalf of Ajuri, that is caca. " It would be recalled that Atiku's fourth wife, Jennifer Douglas who was living in Washington DC in the United States of America reportedly received $40 million from offshore Shell accounts into U.S banks between the year 2000 and 2008. Specific allegations say that $2 million was paid by telephone company, Siemens to Atiku's wife, Jennifer Douglas on behalf of Atiku while he was the Vice President of Nigeria. Siemens has admitted to paying the bribe to Atiku for the purpose of influencing the allocation of a moneyed contract in Nigeria to the company. President Muhammadu Buhari's Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, has posted what seems like a reaction to the news of former President Olusegun Obasanjo's endorsement of Atiku Abubakar, presidential flag-bearer of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), for the 2019 general election. Atiku visited Obasanjo in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, on Thursday afternoon. After the meeting, which held behind closed doors, Obasanjo said he had forgiven the former Vice- President, stating: "From what transpired in the last couple of hours or so, you have shown remorse; you have asked for forgiveness and you have indicated that you have learnt some good lessons and you will mend fences and make amends as necessary and as desirable. " However, minutes later, at exactly 4:15pm, Adesina tweeted: "The harder they come, the harder they fallhttps://www.tori.ng/userfiles/image/2018/oct/11/Femi%20ad.JPG https://mobile.twitter.com/FemAdesina/status/1050404643141021698?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Etweet |

The Senate resolved to stand down Durnguwa’s confirmation after the Chairman of the Senate Committee on National Identity Card and National Polulation Commision, Suleiman Hunkuyi (PDP, Kaduna North) complained that the committee found “discrepancies in the nominee’s credentials.” The Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, thereafter, directed the committee to carry out further investigations on the nominee and report back in four weeks. https://www.tori.ng/news/108154/senate-confirms-22-commissioners-for-npc-rejects-o.html |
Some Christian clerics in Plateau state say they have begun a 40-day prayer for the reelection of President Muhammadu Buhari. A group under the aegis of the National Inter-Faith and Religious Organisations for Peace (NIFROP) is also praying for peace and security of the country. In a statement on Wednesday, Sunday Garuba, a bishop and convener of the prayer, said God sent Buhari to rescue the country that was on a brink of collapse. Garuba said the enemies of Nigeria would be defeated. “The elections are around the corner. In line with the excellent work carried out by President Muhammadu Buhari, the National Inter-Faith and Religious Organisations for Peace (NIFROP) is organising this 40-day prayers, tagged ‘Buhari shall come back in 2019,” the statement read. “This is especially on the heels on the grand plot by agents of darkness to take Nigeria back to the bottomless pit. But by God’s grace, that would not happen. In the book of Exodus, we read the epic story of God’s power to free his people from slavery. In chapter 14, we get to the climax of the story – the crossing of the Red Sea. “Before the people of Israel cross over the sea, they come face to face with their enemy. Their enemy is strong, and they are weak—but God is stronger. I therefore stand before you as a servant of the highest God that the enemies of Nigeria shall be defeated “We shall commence this programme with worship and praise by guest singers and choirs. After which we shall begin Intercessory prayer session for Nigeria, prayer session for President Buhari and his cabinet, prayer for the Nigerian troops at the war front, intercessory prayer for the upcoming General Election and peaceful conduct by all citizens, and Intercessory prayer for our dear president and his victory at the poll. “We shall also hold a special Thanksgiving session with praises to appreciate God for the defeat of Boko Haram and the political killers who came to torment the citizens of our dear country. A prayer against evil men on the Plateau and other forces of evil across Nigeria that have continued to encourage bloodletting in recent times. “There shall also be a different representation of members of the various faiths gathered, as well as messages of solidarity to the good people of Nigeria. God in his infinite mercies would make this event a huge success and also, by his grace alone President Muhammdu Buhari shall return in 2019.” The endorsement of Buhari comes after some Shi’ites marched to Aso Rock to demand that Nigerians vote the president out in 2019. https://www.tori.ng/news/108153/christian-clerics-launch-40day-prayer-for-buhari.html |

Google has said it would shut down Google Plus, the company’s social media platform, after it discovered a security vulnerability that exposed the private data of up to 500,000 users of the service. In a blogpost by Google on Monday, when the company’s technical staff discovered the bug in March, they decided against disclosing the issue to users because they hadn’t found anyone that had been affected. In the blog post, Google said its “Privacy & Data Protection Office” decided the company was not required to report the security issue. Google looked at the “type of data involved, whether we could accurately identify the users to inform, whether there was any evidence of misuse, and whether there were any actions a developer or user could take in response. None of these thresholds were met in this instance,” wrote Ben Smith, a Google vice president of engineering.. Up to 438 applications may have had access to the vulnerability, but Google said it had found no evidence that outside developers were aware of the security flaw and no indication that any user profiles were misused. The incident could face additional scrutiny because of a memo to senior executives reportedly prepared by Google’s policy and legal teams that warned of embarrassment for Google similar to what happened to Facebook earlier this year if it went public with the vulnerability. The decision to shut down Google Plus was part of a broad review of how much user information Google shares with third-party developers. Google, a unit of Alphabet, also said it is limiting the apps that can work with Gmail, the company’s email service, and constraining the amount of data that developers can access through Android, Google’s smartphone software. http://fortune.com/2018/10/08/google-plus-facebook-data-breach/
