A scene from the explosion which took place on Thursday, December 24 in Nnewi, Anambra state. About eight people reportedly lost their lives. While regarding the initial report as “alarming and misleading” , the police chief said: “After the incident, six persons were confirmed dead outside the perimeter fencing of the company. “Two other bodies of a woman and her child were later found dead in an adjourning building. “Six other persons who were seriously injured were also rushed to the University Teaching Hospital Nnewi, and later referred to the hospital in Enugu.” On what led to the explosion, Okechukwu said it may have occurred at a time when domestic gas was being dispensed to customers, “I think there was disconnect which led to the explosion,” explaining further that investigation was still ongoing to ascertain the exact cause of the explosion. The acting director of the state’s Fire Service, Innocent Mbonu, who confirmed the report, stated that although some nearby buildings were affected, six persons died before the service came. A Celestial Church pastor, Prophet Samson Olorunisola (alias Orun mi si), who is the Shepherd in charge of Jehovah Lass Parish, Powerline, Peace Estate, Ajasa-Command, Lagos, is currently cooling his heels at Panti police command for allegedly murdering a male member of his church. Olorunisola was said to have hit the deceased, identified as Kehinde on the head with a diabolic ring. A group of worshipers at a Celestial Church of Christ branch. The deceased, who died after three days in the hospital, confirmed that he was hit on the head with a spiritual ring, but the pastor claimed that he used one of the big crucifixes in the church on his victim. Immediately Olorunisola saw the gravity of his offence, he absconded, but was later arrested by the police. The unfortunate incident took place on the night of Tuesday, December 8, 2015, after the pastor accused Kehinde of trying to have carnal knowledge of his four-year old daughter. He claimed that it was the anger and effort to save his daughter that prompted him to hit the deceased with the crucifix. But before he eventually died, Kehinde who was receiving treatment at a Lagos private hospital, claimed that his pastor actually hit him with a charm (ring). Taiwo, the twin brother of the deceased, who resides abroad, is said to have vowed that justice must be done on the case. He has been communicating with other family members in Nigeria to ensure that the killer of his twin does not go unpunished. https://www.naij.com/677762-shocking-police-arrest-cele-prophet-murdered-church-member-charm.html |
https://www.punchng.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Opeyemi-Balogun-1.jpg Olaleye Aluko Opeyemi Balogun, a 32-year-old who has been in detention since Saturday, November 28, has been transferred to the Force headquarters, Abuja. The police alleged that he sold ammunition to the robbery gang which attacked commercial banks in the FESTAC Town area of Lagos State and the Agbara area of Ogun State. This is just as the family accused the police of framing Opeyemi, saying that there was no reason he should be kept away from his family members. PUNCH Metro had reported on Monday, December 14, that Opeyemi, who hails from Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, was arrested in a hotel on Pillar Street in the Okeriya, Ikorodu area when he went out with friends. The suspect’s elder sister, Febisola, who said the police did not allow the family members to see Opeyemi since the day of the arrest, had claimed that the police demanded N300,000 from the family to secure his bail. The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Joe Offor, had confirmed the arrest of Opeyemi, adding that he was apprehended by the Inspector General of Police monitoring team from Abuja, for a serious case of robbery. PUNCH Metro learnt on Friday that Opeyemi, who is said to have finished from a government technical college, was arrested by the Inspector General of Police Special Intelligence Response Team and had been taken to the Force headquarters, Abuja. Our correspondent gathered from a police source in Abuja that Opeyemi, who was arrested with three other suspects, allegedly sold ammunition to the robbery gang which struck commercial banks in the Ipakodo, FESTAC Town and Lekki areas of Lagos during the year. The source said the police would not demand N300,000 from the family for Opeyemi’s bail, as the Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase, was aware of the the case, which he said was a high-profile case. He said, “The suspect is one of those that sold ammunition to the robbers who attacked banks in the FESTAC Town and the Agbara area. He was arrested along with three others after they had been tracked to the location. He also sold two Berretta pistols and one pump-action gun. He then took the guns to the robbers in a creek in Ikorodu. The police have all the evidence against him. His arrest is known to the IG. “The man can never be released on bail. He and the others will be charged to court. Six of the bank robbers have been arrested too.” However, the family lawyer, Quadri Oladapo, told PUNCH Metro that no allegation was strong enough to have warranted keeping the suspect from his family members for over three weeks. The lawyer claimed the police framed his client. He said, “This man was arrested and detained since November 28. You can imagine what could have happened to him during this period. The police have no right to keep him away from his family if there is nothing secretive about their activities. “You don’t put a suspect in custody and concoct evidence against him. The police have to establish a link between these robbery incidents, and the arrest of Opeyemi.” The Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olabisi Kolawole, confirmed that suspected robbers and sellers of ammunition were arrested by the SIRT, but declined to give names. She said, “I can confirm to you that some suspects linked to the robberies have been arrested, but investigation is ongoing. I cannot give names for now, as investigation is still ongoing on the incident.” http://www.punchng.com/police-link-detained-student-to-festac-agbara-robberies/ lalasticlala |

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has come to the rescue of Professor Itse Sagay (SAN), who was alleged to have made some negative remark about President Muhammadu Buhari’s anti-corruption war. Professor Itse Sagay allegedly described President Buhari’s anti-corruption efforts as “selective” and “cosmetic” and went ahead to accuse the APC and its members of corruption amongst others. Leadership reports that the respected legal scholar in an interview published in the Nigerian Tribune of Sunday, December 20, was quoted to have described President Buhari’s anti-corruption efforts as “selective” and “cosmetic” and went ahead to accuse the APC and its members of corruption amongst others. The APC in its reaction contained in a statement issued in Abuja, on Monday, December 21, described the said interview as ‘concocted.’ The party said: “We are mindful of the axiom: When you fight corruption, it fights back. For the record, Mr. Sagay, a professor of law, well known constitutional lawyer and head of President Buhari’s Advisory Committee on Anti-Corruption, says the newspaper’s interview credited to him is concocted and represents a desperate attempt to discredit President Buhari’s anti-corruption war. He challenged the reporter and paper’s editors to provide the public with a tape recording of the so-called interview.” The statement further hinted that the party’s national chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, also used the medium to plead with Nigerians who acknowledged the advantage in the fight President Buhari’s government is waging against corruption, to remain resolute and not be distracted by this plot to discredit it by agents of corruption. “President Buhari in his May 29 inaugural speech declared, “I belong to everybody and I belong to nobody”; that position remains unchanged. The syndicated and sponsored campaign suggesting a “selective” and “cosmetic” anti-corruption fight by the present administration should be seen as a plot meant to distract the citizenry from the successful ongoing war to catch looters and recover Nigeria’s stolen common wealth,” it said. The party in a reaction to the allegations by the sponsors of the concocted interview that members of the APC are corrupt, pointed out that the sponsors of the concocted interview to prove its claims. APC said the country and the international organization are still amazed over the mouthwatering stealing and diversion of public funds earmarked to buy needed arms and ammunition for our Armed Forces to fight the Boko Haram terrorists group and secure the nation’s territorial integrity. “The president’s assurance that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) will be encouraged to publish details of voluntary return of looted funds to the federal government’s coffers is evidently causing panic in the camp of looters,” it said. In a related development, many members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo state are perfecting plans to defect to the opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). https://www.naij.com/674339-apc-reacts-itse-sagay-alleged-condemnation-buharis-anti-corruption-war.html |
Onofiok Luke was on Monday, December 21, elected as the speaker of the Akwa Ibom state House of Assembly. Luke, a member representing Nsit Ubium state constituency of the state was elected following the nullification of the election of the former speaker, Aniekan Uko (PDP- Ibesikpo/Asutan Constituency) by the Court of Appeal last week. Onofiok Luke elected as Akwa Ibom Speaker NAN reports that 24 members, out of 26 were present during the session on Monday. Speaking with newsmen shortly after their sitting, the new speaker promised to work for the unity and progress of the state, saying his election was the will of God. “ We ascribe everything that happened today to God. Only God should take glory ,” he said. Also, the House leader, Aniefiok Dennis (PDP) representing Etinan constituency was replaced by Aniekan Bassey (PDP) representing Uruan constituency. Dennis replacement followed the nullification of his election by the Appeal Court sitting in Abuja. The new speaker was said to have left guests who turned out to honour his election at the Light Power World ground, along Two-lane within the state capital, Uyo, on their feet for more than three hours as he continued to release unstoppable Christian songs. Luke is a two-term state legislator and the immediate past chairman of the House Committee on Education. He served as personal assistant to Godswill Akpabio, the former Akwa Ibom governor, for three years. He was said to have eyed the speakership position earlier but the political class reportedly ganged up to produce the former speaker who was a first timer in the assembly. On Wednesday, October 21, an election tribunal nullified the elections that took place in 18 out of 31 local government areas in Akwa Ibom state without unseating the governor. However, the Appeal Court nullified the entire poll of the April 11 governorship election , thereby voiding the election of Udom Emmanuel as the governor of the state. https://www.naij.com/674345-akpabios-former-pa-emerges-new-speaker.html |

Governors of the 19 northern states under the aegis of the Northern States Governors Forum, have urgently met to discuss recent clash between the Nigerian army and members of Shi’ites group, which led to the deaths of many people in Zaria, Kaduna state. Following the meeting the governors issued a statement cautioning President Muhammadu Buhari to tread with warning in how it handles the recent fracas between Shiite Muslims and the military. Kashim Shettima, the chairman of the forum and Borno state governor said that “we don’t want the same mistake that happened over the Boko Haram crisis to repeat itself.” “The issue has to do with an Islamic group that has membership across the 19 States in the North and beyond. We want to look how to ensure that the incident does not provide room for anyone or group to perpetuate violence in any of the 19 northern states. “We already have the serious problems of Boko Haram to contend with. We are not in any way comparing the Islamic Movement with Boko Haram, no. But we don’t want the same mistake that happened over the Boko Haram crisis to repeat itself. “When Boko Haram went wild in July 2009 with clashes between them and the police in Bauchi on 25th and 26th in Maiduguri, most Nigerians saw the issues as the problems of Bauchi and Borno. When they continued to attack Borno and Yobe, it became the affairs of Borno and Yobe States. All of a sudden, there was suicide attack in Abuja in 2012 and then everything went out of control and we are where we are today. “So, like I said, we do not make any comparison between the murderously violent Boko Haram insurgents and the Islamic Movement but we are here to analyze and ensure that we take measures that will close any avenue which some people may want to seize to create violence in the immediate or long run.” However, prominent Lagos-based lawyer and social justice activitist, Ebun-Olu Adegberuwa has called on the President Buhari to instantly sack the Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai. The army claimed that Shiites blocked the convoy of its chief, Tukur Buratai, and tried to assassinate him. Meanwhile, the group denied this accusation. A Shia Muslim group led by Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, says hundreds, if not thousands, of its members were killed when soldiers stormed its base in Zaria and opened fire on unarmed residents. The fate of the leader of the group and his wife remains to be unknown. https://www.naij.com/672413-zaria-killings-northern-governors-issue-stern-warning-buhari.html |
The aide of the former president Goodluck Jonathan has given more details on how some of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leaders received slush funds. Colonel Sambo Dasuki and former president Goodluck Jonathan The Nation reports that some former and serving members of the now opposition party may have to return the money distributed to them under the last part for the purpose of seeking re-election. Such PDP bigwigs comprise: Bode George (N100m /$30,000) Yerima Abdullahi (N100m /$30,000) Peter Odili (N100m /$30,000) Attahiru Bafarawa (N100m /$30,000) Jim Nwobodo (N100m /$30,000) Ahmadu Ali (N100m /$30,000) Mahmud Aliyu Shinkafi (N100m /$30,000) Bello Sarkin Yaki (N200m); Tony Anenih (N260m); Iyorchia Ayu’s company ( N345m) Others are: BAM Properties(N300m); Dalhatu Investment Limited(N1.5billion); A former presidential aide also reveled how Jonathan ordered former National Security Adviser Sambo Dasuki to distribute money saying that “most of the party leaders were always going to the former President Goodluck Jonathan for assistance in preparation for the 2015 poll. The usual refrain of Jonathan was ‘leave your account details with my aide’ and after some days, they got alert without cross checking where the money came from. “The ex-president would thereafter send the bank details and instructions to the former National Security Adviser, Mr. Sambo Dasuki to disburse from the security votes and other funds in ONSA. “I think he might have given verbal instructions in most cases but there is sufficient evidence of a few requests forwarded to the ex-NSA from the Villa.” While answering why the office of the ex-NSA was saddled with the responsibility of spending of funds, the source added: “ the ONSA used to manage the president’s security votes, operation and maintenance of the Presidential Fleet and other exigencies including special welfare of ex-Presidents/ Heads of State. “The ex-NSA got involved because Jonathan discovered that each time he directed that funds be disbursed, most beneficiaries were not getting the cash. He had trust in the ex- NSA and decided to saddle him with the responsibility.” “Some members of the PDP Contact and Mobilization Committee got their share directly from a former National Chairman of the party, Alh. Adamu Muazu at his residence. “Some of these funds given to Muazu came from the former Minister of State for Finance, Amb. Bashir Yuguda. “Yuguda also became part of the disbursement because of the trust reposed in him by the former First Family. In fact, Yuguda got his appointment at the behest of the ex-First Lady, Mrs. Patience Jonathan. “The former First Lady’s path crossed with Yuguda when the latter was Nigeria’s Ambassador to UAE. “For always hosting Mrs. Jonathan very well in Dubai, she spotted him as a responsible diplomat and pushed through in making him a Minister. When campaign funds were being mismanaged, the Jonathan opted for Yuguda too because of the ‘trust’ he had in him. “Old friendship and loyalty made Yuguda to be part of this scandal rocking the nation.” President Muhammadu Buhari’s government which was elected on the promise to fight the corruption continues its probe of $2 billion arms procurement scandal. Former NSA Colonel Sambo Dasuki, the AIT Chairman Raymond Dokpesi, the former minister of state for finance Bashir Yuguda among others are being are being implicated in the shady deals. The stolen money was meant to be spending on arms procurement to fight the insurgency in the northeast of the country. However, Dasuki is said to have been spent the stolen money on a number of things comprising re-election campaigns, real estate, “spiritual purposes”, as well as payments to a number of public officials. https://www.naij.com/672407-gejs-aide-reveals-dasuki-yuguda-share-millions-naira-pdp-leaders.html |

A recent post by an online community has stirred panic, as the
message suggests that the Iranian military might be planning
an assault on Nigeria, in revenge for the Shiites who were
killed in Zaria, Kaduna state. An unverified post by Iran Military suggests that Nigeria might soon be a target According the post by a Facebook community called the “Iran Military”, the Iranian forces are apparently preparing to “pay a visit” to Nigeria, to avenge the souls of Shiite faithfuls killed in clashes between the Nigerian army and Shia Muslims last week . The threatening post dated December 15 made a joke of the Nigerian administration, terming it a “puppet regime”. Below is the snapshot of the post that has started generating heated arguments, sending shivers down the spine of many. The controversial clash, which began on Saturday, December 12, and spilled on a few days more, has generated diverse reactions both locally and in the international community. There have been series of protests both home and abroad . It will be recalled that Iranian officials and media condemned and expressed concern over the attack on prominent Shiite cleric Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky by the Nigerian military . The Iranian foreign minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif, called on Nigerian authorities to respect religious figures and rites . On Tuesday, December 15, President Muhammadu Buhari received a call from the Iranian president, Hassan Rouhani, over the Shiite bloodbath . Various Iranian media outfits report that President Rouhani urged Buhari to act on the issue and “ not allow a small matter degenerate into a bigger one“. Earlier Tehran summoned Nigeria’s charge d’affaires to express its outrage at the Nigerian army’s deadly crackdown. The Nigerian government was required to “immediately sheds light on the incident, treat the injured, and compensate for damages” . The Shiite Muslims have continued to protest, calling for the release of their leader Sheikh Zakzaky. The Shiites and the family of El-Zakzaky have said that they were unaware of his whereabouts and were uncertain of his current health status. Certain photos have been allegedly released by the Nigeria army, they show that the cleric is in a really terrible state. A reprisal by the Muslim group is feared, however, leaders of the Islamic movement in Nigeria, have listed five conditions for possible truce. The leaders presented a catalogue of demands to the federal government, one of their major demands is the immediate release of their leader , which the Nigeria army has said is no longer in their custody. It is pertinent to noted that the leader of the small Shiite community in Nigeria has close political and religious ties with Iran dating back to the 1979 revolution. Hence, the reason Iran and all its people are putting their weight behind him. Opinions are divided on the recent Zaria clash, while some believe that the Nigerian army acted in accordance to rules of engagement, others believe that they massacred unarmed civilians and should have exercised more restraint rather than using lethal force. A lot of brainstorming is still ongoing in different quarters regarding the killings, and as the Nigerians await official statements from both the government and Nigerian army regarding the rumours of war, they can only pray that their feet will not be forced to dance to the drums of war. https://www.naij.com/672174-war-nigeria-attacked-iranian-military.html |

In response to a statement made by the Ekiti state governor,
Ayodele Fayose, alleging that the All Progressives Congress
was trying to arm-twist the court, the party has described it
as a cheap blackmail. The governor had said in his press conference in Lagos purporting that the ruling party was planning to illegally use the Supreme Court to upturn his mandate in favour of the party, Vanguard reports. The party said: “Governor Fayose’s fraudulent and pre- emptive tactics will not stop justice from taking its course in the resolution of the biggest electoral fraud in the history of Nigeria.” In a statement by Taiwo Olatunbosun, APC publicity secretary, the party said that Fayose’s alleged fraudulent attempt to draw the support of the international community to poll fraud was an impish attempt to legitimise fraud. Olatunbosun noted that the same international community had since realized that world leaders were also victims of Fayose and PDP’s fraud by misleading them in Fayose’s electoral victory in Ekiti State. He said in the statement: “Even though the international community declared that Ekiti poll that produced Fayose was fair, the same world leaders have since changed their position after listening to Ekiti poll fraud tape as secretly recorded by Captain Sagir Koli detailing how Fayose and PDP leaders rigged the election, including Fayose himself talking in the tape how he collected INEC soft copies and got them printed to win the election. “Why did Fayose try to pressurize members of the military panel to rescue him? After his emissaries returned empty- handed in their failed bids to achieve their aims, Fayose has now resorted to blackmail, accusing the president of trying to destroy democracy and we wonder who between him and the president the enemy of democracy is. “This is the man that sacked the court and beat up a judge. This is a man that used seven members to impeach a speaker and closed the House of Assembly against 19 members of the Assembly for six months. This is a man that ran all opposition politicians out of town during elections and launched relentless attacks on opposition candidates during election.” The party scribe said that the governor was running away from his shadow after failed bids to beg President Muhammadu Buhari who he abuses daily. He further added: “Besides declaring in the tape that he collected INEC soft copies that he printed, Fayose also said in the tape that a collation was done days before the election in Efon-Alaye and we want to ask whether Efon-Alaye was the collation centre for Ekiti governorship election and whether it is not a fraud to collate the result of an election that had not been held. “If a criminal case that is taken to court and the court assumes jurisdiction to try that criminal case is what Fayose would call illegality and destruction of democracy, is it printing INEC soft copies and collation of results days to the election that is legal and a boost to the practice of democracy in Nigeria?” Olatunbosun also stressed that the governor should explain to Nigerians and the international community what he meant in the Ekiti poll fraud tape where he said he collected INEC soft copies that he printed to win his election. In the statement that seemed not to spear the governor, the APC spokesman said that no amount of crocodile tears shed from one television house to the other and blackmail of the ruling party would make him escape justice in the resolution of Ekiti state election fraud. https://www.naij.com/669029-apc-fayose-alleged-blackmail.html |
The Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, on Tuesday, said there was no “material fact” to prosecute the Chairman of the Conduct of Conduct Tribunal, Danladi Umar, over corruption allegations by the Anti Corruption Network. Mr. Malami made the disclosure when he appeared before the House of Representatives Committee on Public Petitions, investigating the allegations of corruption against Mr. Umar in a petition to the House by the ACN. A member of the House, Riwa Shawalum, had on November 12, laid before the House the petition signed by the group’s Executive Secretary, Ajulo Ajulo. The group was headed by Dino Melaye, who is currently a senator. Among the allegations contained in the petition was the withdrawal of N1 million in July 2011 from the coffers of the CCT by Mr. Umar to sponsor his own wedding. He was also accused of spending N15.2 million to purchase a Toyota Prado sport utility vehicle “without following due process”. Mr. Umar was further accused of awarding contracts for the supply of office furniture and fittings at N11.3 million in March 2011. The contracts were reportedly executed by a “supposedly engineering company and not a furniture or supply company”. He also allegedly paid N4.2million for “purchase of welfare items” in a contract executed by a private individual. Another N4.2 million for the “procurement of external light bulbs” was described by the petitioners as “entirely fictitious contract”. As part of the investigation, the Committee had sought submissions from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the Attorney General of the Federation. But Mr. Malami said that based on the presentation by Mr. Umar, the petition by ACN and the submission by the EFCC, it would be difficult to initiate prosecution against the CCT Chairman. “Deriving from the conclusions, it became difficult for any prosecution to be initiated on the basis of facts as they were presented,” the AGF said. “The position of the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation is that in the absence of further material fact in the allegations, we find it very difficult to prosecute Alhaji Umar in the circumstances against the background of his presentation and further conclusion arrived at by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. “I’m happy to bring to the notice of the committee that EFCC has provided opinion on the basis of which we acted, a copy of that letter I believe has been made available to the committee. It is dated 5th March 2015. “Of particular interest is the second to the last paragraph which is paragraph five of the letter of the letter, with the permission of the chairman of the committee I quote; facts as they are now against Justice Umar raised a mere suspicion and will therefore not be sufficient to successfully prosecute for the offence”. The letter cited by the AGF was an “Investigation Report” referenced EFCC/EC/SGF/03/56, responding to the directive by a former Secretary General of the Federation, Pius Anyim, that that the anti-graft agency investigate allegation of bribery against Mr. Umar. A retired Deputy Comptroller General of Nigerian Customs Service, Rasheed Taiwo, who was standing trial at the CCT, had accused Mr. Umar of demanding N10 million bribe from him. In the report, the EFCC said, “There are indications that the Tribunal Chairman (Mr. Umar) might have demanded and collected money from the complainant through his said Personal Assistant. However, efforts to recover the telephone handset used by Justice Umar proved abortive as he claimed he lost the phone in 2012. “This has made it impossible to subject it to independent analysis with a view to corroborating the allegation. In the same vein, the complainant could not also make available his telephone set on the grounds that he had lost it. “Justice Umar also admitted that he met privately severally with the complainant in his chamber at the Tribunal. This is a most unethical and suspicious conduct on his part. “There is a prima facie evidence to however prosecute the Personal Assistant, Abdullahi, who could offer no coherent excuse for receiving N1.8 million naira into his salary account from Taiwo who is an accused person standing trial at the Tribunal,” he said. Mr. Ajufo said he wanted the House Committee headed by Nkem Uzoma – Abonta, to use its petition to verify all accusations “We are whistleblowers we have fought corruption both locally and globally, we have fought corruption in primary school and in the Federal executive. We have done this over. “We are here to adopt our petition with this honourable committee, we are also to say that the committee should use our petition to investigate and verify all the accusations, our organisation is not into blackmail, it is not sectional and selective in our fight against corruption. “One of the major issues we have here in our petition and as stated we cannot understand why directive by the AGF is only focusing on the personal assistant on the chairman of CCT, one Ali Gambo and not the chairman himself. “Mr Chairman, we urge this committee to please ask the Chairman of CCT to produce the original of the following documents which are; one advanced payment vouchers and other voucher, from 2011 to 2014, I will beg to stop here for now,” he said. A director of the CCT, Abdulaziz Badisha, asked the committee to request the ACN to produce its document of registration. Mr. Nkem- Abonta, while ruling on the matter, said all presentations would be looked into accordingly and asked the ACN to produce its registration document within the next 48 hours. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/195279-no-evidence-to-prosecute-cct-chairman-danladi-umar-says-fg.html |

President Barack Obama has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to immediately probe the clash between the Nigerian Army and the Islamic Movement in Nigeria in Zaria on Saturday. In a statement through its Embassy in Abuja on Wednesday, the United States government said it was deeply concerned about the clash, which resulted in the loss of several civilian lives. The statement reads: “The United States is deeply concerned by reports of violent clashes between members of the Nigerian Army and the Shiite group Islamic Movement of Nigeria in Zaria, Kaduna State over the past several days. “While many details of the incidents that reportedly began on December 12 remain unclear, we are dismayed to learn of multiple civilian deaths. It is essential that all sides refrain from actions that further destabilize the situation. “The United States calls on the Government of Nigeria to quickly, credibly, and transparently investigate these events in Zaria and hold to account any individuals found to have committed crimes.” The fallout from the clash has since attracted international condemnation, with the Iranian government condemning the killing of the Shi’ite sect members by the army. While that country’s Foreign Minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif, called on the Federal Government to take “prompt and serious” action on the matter, its representative in Nigeria has since been summoned back home for briefing. Several members of the Shi’ite sect were killed when the army raided the area occupied by the sect in the northern part of Zaria in Kaduna State. The leader of the group, Ibrahim Zakzaky, was arrested. The army had accused the Movement of attempting to assassinate the Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, when members of the sect, who were conducting an annual ritual to usher in the month of Maulud, the birth month of the Prophet Mohammed, blocked the convoy of the army chief in Zaria. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/more-news/195266-america-demands-quick-transparent-probe-of-shiites-army-clash-in-zaria.html |
