The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) on Tuesday, December
29, listed reasons why the party raised massive alarm over the
N6.08 trillion budget presented by President, Muhammadu
Buhari before the National Assembly. President Muhammadu Buhari presents the 2016 Budget at the National Assembly recently. Speaking to journalists in Abuja, the national publicity secretary of the PDP, Oliseh Metuh said the budget presented by the president is a huge fraud. Metuh said that the N1.84 trillion as proposed for borrowing on the 2016 budget amounts to Nigeria’s doom in the near future. He added that a breakdown of the N1.84 trillion reveals that Nigeria would be borrowing N5 billion a day for the next 365 days, starting from January 1, 2016. This he said does not correspond with provision for economic production or a repayment plan. Metuh said: “ Some people may be wondering why we raised an alarm about the budget. The reason is simple. When we analyzed the budget, we discovered it is a misshapen attempt at a Keynesian economics of applying deficit spending to stimulate growth even when studies have proven that GDP growth rates decrease by over 50% when debt goes from low or moderate to high. But then we know the borrowing here is to pay huge campaign debt and fund a political war chest.” The PDP spokesperson said, the 2016 budget is a trap against Nigeria as the budget failed to highlight specific projects for which the nation intends to borrow for. “ The President should explain to Nigerians how they intend to pay back the loan. Is it by continuous borrowing to service the interests, and does he intend to accumulate colossal debt for future generations of Nigerians? ” he asked. He added that the present administration under the leadership of President Buhari can barely justify the recent budget proposal. “There is no known economy in the world where you can justify borrowing N1.84 trillion without specific projects and precise repayment outline. This is worse still in an oil-driven, mono- economy at a time crude oil is selling at $30 dollars per barrel and is speculated to go down to about $20 dollars or even lower in the next one year. The idea can only come when you diversify the economy and boost production capacity in manufacturing and other critical sectors, a direction, which the budget clearly failed to provide, ” he said. Metuh said as it is, borrowing is a negative plan for the country. He further said his party is disturbed about negative economic policies by the Buhari-led administration, stating that the present administration have resorted to emulating economic policies that have failed in the past. “ Recall that we had earlier alerted on the negative consequences of the retrogressive foreign exchange controls wherein this government is making it impossible for honest Nigerians to engage in free trade and regulate their personal activities. “They are driving us to be like Greece, and to plunge us into unnecessary debt. When the PDP took office in 1999, we achieved the cancellation of inherited debts. This administration, in seeking to accumulate debts, should know that there is no possibility that any country in the world will give us debt cancellation anymore.” He said: “ There seems to be the erroneous belief that the controls will create foreign exchange stability or strengthen the Naira by limiting foreign currency outflows. This policy had badly affected other countries in the recent past; including Argentina, whose new government had to reverse the policy to save their economy. Why then are we copying a policy that failed in other countries?” Metuh added that the crude controls implemented by the Federal Government have been proven to be ineffective in preventing capital flight. Adding that by limiting the local availability of foreign exchange, the controls have obviously increased the demand for foreign exchange thereby putting greater pressure on the naira and achieving the exact opposite of what the government in its naivety believed would happen. “The negative impacts of the ill-conceived controls include the hindering of international trade and discouraging of foreign investment. We have seen first-hand the crippling of the private sector in the last six months, upon the implementation of these measures were out. Traders, importers and all manner of businesses are being destroyed as a result of the contrived unavailability of foreign exchange ,” he stated. Buhari presented a N6.08 trillion budget last Tuesday for the fiscal year 2016. The House of Representatives said that budget would require “ thorough overhauling” by the National Assembly to bring it in tune with current economic realities. https://www.naij.com/680954-raised-alarm-buharis-n6-08-trillion-budget-pdp.html |

Governor Ayodele Fayose has been accused by the All Progressives Congress of reckless insensitivity to workers’ plight over his Chrismas trip to Dubai. The APC has accused Governor Fayose of Insensitivity to workers plight The APC stated that the trip was the height of irresponsibility displayed by the governor to embark on private comfort abroad while state workers had not received salary. The main opposition party in the state wondered how the governor could afford to expense N250 million on Christmas foreign trips when state workers had not been paid their three months’ salary. The APC position was contained in a signed statement made by the publicity secretary, Taiwo Olatunbosun, on Sunday, Dec ember 27. The statement read in part: “ It is more worrisome that the governor prepared and collected travelling allowances for 10 aides who he claimed were to travel with him to Dubai, but only one eventually made the trip while money running into millions for the remaining nine was pocketed by the governor. ” “[It] confirmed our earlier alarm that Fayose is taking Ekiti money out to the Middle East country whenever he receives allocation from the Federal Government.” “Fayose just visited local governments where he lied to the workers that the state government is broke whereas he has appropriated N250m for his needless trip and those of ghost aides after setting aside another N250 million for his monthly personal security vote. “This is a governor who few days ago accused his colleagues of extravagant spending through foreign trips even though he himself is the greatest culprit. This confirms our allegation that Governor Fayose is an incorrigible con artist that ever lives.” “Regretting that Fayose was dehumanising Ekiti people through anti-people policies, such as heavy taxes that could not be accounted for, he said this was unlike in former Governor Kayode Fayemi’s era in 2013 when workers collected their December salary a week to Christmas in addition to 30 percent of their annual basic salary as Christmas bonus. “Fayose again conned Ekiti workers by paying ten percent of their monthly basic salary which translated to about N700 (seven hundred naira) to most workers while he shamelessly boasted he had paid workers’ bonus.” https://www.naij.com/680772-apc-accuses-fayose-spending-n250m-christmas-trip.html |

A document has revealed that Abba Moro, a former minister of interior may have short-changed the federal government of Nigeria in an e-Pass biometric project with the help of a private firm, Continental Transfer Technique Limited and the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS). According to the document obtained by The Punch, Moro favoured the private firm in the sharing formula for the proceeds of the e-Pass biometric project, which was based on private-public-partnership arrangement. Abba Moro in fresh NIS project scam. The project which took off in the country on September 22, 2015 was initiated by David Parradang, the suspended comptroller-general of immigration, following a letter on December 18, 2014, to the then Interior minister. In the letter, he proposed that government should abolish the issuance of re-entry visa while, adding a $100 fee to the $1000 being charged for the Combined Expatriate Residence Permit and Aliens Card. The letter read in part: “ We wish to further propose that the service provider be given 15 per cent of the $100 added to the CERPAC fee, while NIS collects another 15 per cent and the remaining 70 per cent be paid into government coffers, as is the practice. The foregoing is respectfully submitted for your consideration and approval please.” Signing on the letter, Moro amended the sharing formula by giving 30 per cent to the service provider as against the 15 per cent suggested by the immigration service. The e-Pass biometric project is a federal government designed scheme to ensure that all non-ECOWAS immigrants that visit Nigeria with a tourist or business visa and intend to stay in the country beyond 56 days in a year, are made to pay a certain amount of money, as advised by the NIS. Those who want to stay beyond 56 days but not exceeding 90 days would pay a fee in the equivalent of $200, while 91 days to 180 days will attract a fee equivalent to $1,000, which must be paid to Sterling Bank Plc only. Those staying beyond 180 days but not exceeding 365 days would attract a fee equivalent of $2,000 while an over-stay without due permission from the federal government would attract a penalty, which is 100 per cent of the prescribed fees. An additional fee of N8, 000 will be charged for each application form by the receiving bank. In October, Moro had been summoned and interrogated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over the March 2014 ill-fated recruitment into the Nigeria Immigration Service. Paradang who was a key-party to the botched recruitment exercise was also quizzed over the whereabouts of the N650million fees gotten from the job applicants. Recall that over 520,000 Nigerian graduate applicants had applied for 5,000 spaces and each of them paid the sum of N1000 to write a test to get an employment slot. Unfortunately, over 15 applicants lost their lives in various recruitment centres across the country on the day of the test. https://www.naij.com/680402-another-nis-project-scam-uncovered-former-minister-abba-moro-trouble.html |
The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has given federal government conditions before accepting the decision to removal subsidy on petrol (PMS) Speaking with Channels TV during today’s edition of Sunrise daily, the president of the union Igwe Achese who claimed he wasn’t aware of the plan to remove subsidy reeled out the conditions for accepting subsidy. Aches said fuel subsidy removal would not achieve the intended purpose if the refineries in the country are not working at full capacity. He opined that fixing the refineries would help to cushion the effect of the move on the users of the product. The NUPENG president explained the rationale behind price modulation in most of the filling stations across the country. According to him, some marketers buy the products at higher prices from private depots whose prices are variance with that of the NNPC depot. As a result, marketers in this category are compelled to sell above pump price in order to stay in business. Achese frowned at the actions of DPR representatives who patrol fuel stations to ensure compliance to the pump price. He opined that the focus should be on putting a lasting solution to the challenges by fixing the refineries rather than adopting a cosmetic approach. Since the idea of subsidy removal was conceived, NUPENG has maintained that the union would kick against subsidy that is import-driven. Experts have been clamoring for the deregulation of the petroleum sector in order to reposition the sector. Meanwhile, the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has described the planned removal of fuel subsidy as illegal and diversionary. The Union also maintained that it would resist any attempt take off subsidy in January. Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, the minister of state for petroleum who doubles as the group managing director, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) had vowed to scrap oil subsidy. According to him, it is a fraudulent initiative. ”So for the first time people will understand that the pricing modulation I was talking about is not a gimmick. It is for real. The objective is that we cannot afford to continue to subsidize. We can’t even understand where those subsidies were going to. There is a lot of fraud elements in it so we need to cut that off. The second is that the earning capacity of the Federal Government is deteriorating by the day with lower prices of crude, ” he explained. https://www.naij.com/680161-nupeng-gives-fg-conditions-removal-fuel-subsidy.html |

If you’re leading life in the fast lane, or even just the busy lane, there are a lot of things you might be missing out on. Or think you just don’t have time for. Make time to do or say the following things more often. You won’t be sorry and they will all make you feel better instantly. • Give or receive a cuddle. Have you hugged your friend, your partner, your pet or your child today? Did you stand still long enough for them to give you a hug? We are social creatures and we all need this contact a lot more than we think. Give hugs, and you will truly receive them. • Appreciate your food. Food sustains us, and much of it is downright delicious. But so often we eat while we are doing other things, such as driving or watching TV, or working at our desks. Take a few minutes to savour the taste of your lovely sandwich or the excellent cup of coffee. It’s one of life’s pleasures and appreciating your food doesn’t have to be restricted to weekends or dinners at fancy restaurants. • Phone a friend or relative. It takes a few minutes, and could make someone’s day. Phone just to ask how they are and to tell them you’ve been thinking of them. Everyone likes to be remembered. It doesn’t have to take more than five minutes. If you don’t have time for a long chat, say so, but do pick up the phone. Next time someone will give you a call when you really need it. • Say you’re not in a hurry when you aren’t. We are often racing against time to get things done. But on the one day when you are not, say so to the cashier who is getting into a panic, because she has to change the paper roll in the till. Or let someone go in front of you at the queue and mention that you have the time. Or let the person with the screeching kitty go ahead of you at the vet and say you can wait. People are always pleasantly surprised and grateful and the good feelings rub off. • Point out something beautiful. Be conscious of the pretty things around you – the neighbour’s tree, the sunset, an old couple holding hands, the flowers growing by the side of the highway. Appreciate them actively, and point them out to people so that they can be conscious of them too. Take the time to look at these and appreciate them. • Tell someone they’re good at their job. There are few more pleasing things in life than watching someone do their job really well. This can be a street sweeper, an electricity meter reader, an ice cream seller, or a sales manager – in short, anyone who does what they have to do with a deft and sure touch, and who is friendly while doing it. Tell them that you’ve noticed. They will never forget it. • Say thank you to your child’s teacher. A good teacher is a special person indeed. He/she is a substitute parent to a large group of children, which includes yours. And believe me, their rewards are certainly not financial. Say thank you to them often if they do a great job. • Give something useful to a homeless person. And this is probably not cash, even though it might be the easiest. Food, a blanket, a jersey, even just a friendly smile. Homeless people are often invisible to others who just see them as a nuisance. Acknowledge that person, and if you can, give them something that might make their lives easier even if it is just for the day. Being homeless is tough, and being ignored makes it even tougher. • Curiosity is good. If you come across something interesting, take the time to go and find out more about it. Tell others what you have discovered. Interested people are interesting. Bored people are boring. • Focus on the one positive thing. If you walk into someone’s new flat and you can see 10 things that need fixing, focus and comment on the one positive thing, such as the nice curtains, or the pretty view, or whatever. People mostly know when things are wrong, but they can’t always fix them. Also, in public places, don’t zone in on the one thing that is wrong. It makes everyone feel tense and somehow responsible, especially if they can’t do something about it. And the negativity spoils the atmosphere for everyone. • Listen instead of talking. There is a big difference between listening and waiting to talk. Listening properly to someone (and remembering what they have said to you) is the biggest compliment you can pay them. If you listen properly, you will never be lost for words when it comes to your turn to speak. And a good listener who doesn’t pass judgement will also never be short of friends. • Be actively grateful. It sounds cheesy, but listing the things you are grateful for, helps to focus your attention on the positive things in your life. Concentrating on the negative and giving it too much airtime in your head can lead to a vortex of bitterness. Once you’re caught in that spiral, all the good things become invisible, and you take them for granted. http://m.news24.com/Nigeria/Lifestyle/12-things-we-dont-do-or-say-often-enough-20151224-4 |
Most of us have Facebook for whatever reason. I have Facebook because with my family, friends, acquaintances etc. spread all over the earth, FB brings us together like a big party. (I wish it was Ibiza but alas it’s just the digital world) There is fun as you share memories and funny happenings. FB also makes them accessible any time, you don’t have to ring up a huge telephone bill on the “catch up”. Sure, Facebook is a great tool to update your status: "What's on your mind?" An artful, witty or newsy status update is a pleasure -- a real-time, tiny window into a friend's life. Recall the days of diaries, where their inner most thoughts and feelings were captured. If someone even glanced in its direction, you would be in defense mode. Sometimes FB becomes a “dear diary” and it also tends to bring to the forefront the most attention seeking people. FB also brings about different personality traits of people. ★ The let-me-tell-you-every-detail-of-my-life type "I woke up." "I had Cornflakes for breakfast." "I'm bored" "I'm stuck in traffic." Response to this type: Not every moment of your life needs to be broadcasted. An unsolicited second by second account can become err! Boring! Mundane! Just because you have 502 Facebook friends doesn't mean we all want to know when you're waiting for your lift club. How awesome? ★ The Self-Centered type OK, so we've probably all posted at least once, twice or maybe three times about some achievement. Maybe you are an interesting person and your family and friends, the international/national ones do really want to know about your new job or about the fascinating article you wrote about Facebook Types. But when almost EVERY update is about you, you and more you, it does become a little self-absorbed. When your little inner voice tells you – “you are bragging now” you probably are! ★ The Friend-DUH type An Average FB user has 120 friends. If you are a social butterfly, then maybe 300 BUT if you brag about the 1000 plus friends you have, you have a problem, stop “friending” every person. Lady packing your groceries at the supermarket doesn’t need to be your pal on FB. The only time 1000 plus is acceptable, if you are Vin Diesel or “The Rock”, then maybe you might have such a Fan Base. Keep it real! ★ The Broadcaster "Kim Kardashian makes another tape” You heard it from my FB Page first! You might want to switch to E-entertainment fellow F-Booker. 500,000 other people saw it as well. Sometimes these types even get caught in spam, in their rush to trumpet the news they never verify …. “Olympus has fallen” could mean many things, maybe not the White House. ★ The Grammar/Spelling Fiend We are well aware that things are different in the digital world. I also make mistakes, but care about words please, there is a difference between “accidently” and “accidentally”, “their” and “there”. And sometimes putting an apostrophe in the wrong place is not right. ★ The Attention Seeker "I am sad today." "Thinking about last night!”, “I cried last night …..” Like fisherman, they cast their rods -- baited with vague tales of woe -- in the hopes of landing concerned responses. Genuine bad news is one thing, but really if you want us to bite, maybe try prawn bait and not bread. ★ The Stealth Mode FB Friend AKA peeping toms. They never comment, like or post anything on your page. You would not miss them if they unfriended you, but meet them in person or at a function. , these voyeurs will mention something you posted a while ago, or a picture they saw, that when you realise they were hiding in the shadows of your FB Page. Stalkerish! And quite creepy. ★ The Troll They spew sarcasm, insults, unfounded or unwarranted comments. All I can say: UNFRIEND immediately ★ The Paparazzi That one person who is like an ever-ready bunny, takes a pic of you then proceeds to upload it onto your FB page immediately - photos you didn't authorize and haven't even seen? It’s really hard to explain why you were with Channing Tatum and not Ryan Gosling on that night, at that time, when you said you were at home with the flu. ★ The Chronic Inviter Play Mafia Wars with me. Play Candy Crush with me. Sign my petition. Like this page. You probably mean well, but stop. Just stop, can't we simply be friends? Why do you keep inviting me to farm beets with you. I don’t like farming! Argggghh! http://m.news24.com/Nigeria/Lifestyle/the-type-of-facebook-friends-you-need-to-delete-right-now-20151224-3 lalasticlala HAPPY NEW YEAR! |
The Minister of Solid Minerals Dr Kayode Fayemi has said the N6.08 trillion 2016 budgetary proposal presented before the National Assembly by President Muhammadu Buhari was not too much. Minister of Solid Minerals Dr Kayode Fayemi Fayemi said considering the level of infrastructural decay and other sundry problems confronting the nation, the 2016 budget could still not boast that the amount would be more than enough to turn around the infrastructural facilities across the nation. The former Ekiti state governor stated this while speaking at Isan Ekiti on Sunday, December 27. “The former governor of Lagos State who superintends over the Ministry of Power, Works and Housing with about N433 billion budgetary provision cannot say the amount is enough to turn around the facilities of this country if you look at what was involved. “Lagos-Ibadan expressway alone will gulp N250 billion while the remaining amount may go with the second Niger bridge, so no Minister can say the amount budgeted is more than enough”, he said “The budget presented by President Buhari has a focus and the focus is to improve on the well being of all Nigerians and to improve on the infrastructural facilities across the nation . “So, what we need now is to prove our mettle by being innovative and be creative. We need to work very hard to actualize the focus of this budget and this will only be measured by the level of impacts we are able to make on Nigerian masses”. On the enormous mineral potentials of the country, Fayemi said the Nigeria’s self-sufficiency in cement production is enough to attest to the fact that the country is richly blessed. “Nigeria is well endowed. Our self-sufficiency in limestone for production of cement, marble , ceramic and many others in terms of local consumption and export rate, one would know that Nigeria is endowed. “In my local community in Isan Ekiti here, we have clay and kaolin and that was why we are regarded as pottery capital of Ekiti. But what have we achieved or done with this potential? And this endowment can be replicated a thousand folds across Nigeria. “In Ijero Ekiti, there a feldspar , tantalite stone, Kaolin and many others. Even just look at the stones across the country , if it is just to cut and polish and use as tiles, one cannot imagine the huge economic gains and the employment it will generate, let alone the export earnings that are involved. “We have been getting cheap money from oil and now the cheap money is gone. Now, we have to look inward and that was exactly what the budget is targeted to achieve”. https://www.naij.com/679001-minister-defends-n6-08-trillion-budget-read-said.html |
Facts have emerged on how Sergeant Stephen James, police murdered three residents and also took his own life in Ketu area of Lagos state on Boxing Day. The News reports that the late police officer was proud of the ‘terrorist’ tag placed on him by residents of the area. Sule Ajayi, a 26-year-old resident of Ketu who reportedly got to the scene of the incident minutes after the occurrence, said: “Guys around always called him Terrorist and he was proud to be associated with the nickname, excited anytime he was hailed.” The late police officer with Force number 217884, shot dead a set of twins, Taiwo and Kehinde Oyesunle and a third person simply identified as Jeje in a Boxing Day tragedy at the Paulson Hotel located on Anibaba Street, Ketu during a footbal match before killing himself. “Many times, he had threatened people, both residents of this our area and those who patronise the hotel. When he is charged, he would yell at people over any slight provocation and threaten to shoot and kill. Front view of the hotel where the incident occurred. Photo: The News “He would often say he is on official assignment and as a result, has licence to kill and that he could kill and label a person an armed robber and that instead of punishing him, the police authority would promote him. As a result, we were very scared of him because he went about armed,” one of the residents of the area said on the condition of anonymity. Residents of the area who confirmed that Sergeant James was often drunk informed that he often smoked too. According to Ajayi: “Just four days ago, a young man, who visits the hotel often with his friends, came to this hotel and as usual, bought drinks for this policeman. “While they were discussing and throwing banters, he started bragging again of how he loved shooting. The man who bought him drinks told him: ‘oya, show your power now’. The policeman brought out his gun and released four times into the air. “Many people in the neighbourhood were scared but they later heard that it was James. That’s how we had been coping with him not knowing he was a danger waiting to happen.” Investigations revealed two versions to the incident; the first being that one of the three killed residents had a problem with some people in the hotel and the policeman was called from where he sat to intervene and during the arguments that ensued, he was said to have shot the man and the other two who wanted to challenge him. The victims of the gunshot and the late police officer. Photo: The News The officer was said to have shot himself in the chest on realising how much damage he had done. On the other hand, the late Sergeant was said to have threatened customers who came to the hotel to celebrate Boxing Day, asking them to buy him drinks. It was in the course of the harassment that James reportedly stormed the table where the twins and their friend sat and when he made his demand, they had told him to be patient. The officer was asked to asked to behave responsibly for once after continuing with his harassment of the twins, a statement which was said to have irked the impatient officer. He was said to have laid ambush for the young men outside the hotel and a source reliably informed that the shooting at the front of the hotel occurred after a hot argument between the trio and the policeman which ended in the demise of the parties involved. Their corpses have since been deposited at a morgue in Ikorodu and the police public relations officer, Joe Offor, confirmed the incident, stating that the killer cop was under the influence of alcohol. “I don’t have much information on that but I am sure we would know in the next few days if he was officially drafted to the hotel or if there are more to be heard of the incident,” a police source informed while preferring to remain anonymous. https://www.naij.com/678848-read-real-story-drunken-cop-killed-three-self-lagos-boxing-day.html lalasticlala |
