Fineman2:
Story of the day;

Hello Omajuwa. I am an only child who is 42years old. My mother refused to remarry after my father died when I was young. She sacrificed so much for me to be where I am today. I got married about 7years ago. My wife and I have been looking upto God for a child. After pleading with my wife for us to adopt at least a child to no avail, I decided to get my mum who stays with us to help me speak to her woman to woman. But this made them become sworn enemies. My wife since then talks to my mother anyhow and disrespects her every now and then. It has been like that for months.

Few days ago, while returning from work, I heard their loud shouts from outside but I remained outside waiting for the shouts to be over as I didn’t want to be put in the position of choosing a side. But I had to intervene when I heard a loud slap. My wife had slapped my mother. I was enraged but I kept my cool, took my mother from the scene and catered for her. I have since not said a word to my wife.

All I feel when I am at home is sadness and depression. I have no peace in my own home. I have sacrificed a whole lot just to make this marriage work. The woman I married has become someone else. I have defended this same woman from my extended family for years. I have been labeled a ritualist and all sorts of name due to our childlessness but I have never cheated and I have always defended my wife despite knowing that she is the one with fertility issues.

Even though my mother has been trying to put up a strong front since that day, I know that she has been crying herself to sleep. I love my wife so much but I love my mum too. What could my mother have possibly done to warrant her slapping my mother? I think my wife is selfish and is no longer who I married. Why would she rather constantly inflict pain and sadness on her own family? I just want peace of mind and I have made up my mind to divorce my wife. But hope this won’t be a mistake? Is there still a marriage to save here? How do I go about it? What do I do? Please help me.
Tell ur wife to write her side and you forward it here.
Thanks

Let me clarify if the woman is wealthy & the man is poor,if they divorce will the woman's wealth be shared equally with the man?
In a case of divorce right?

Our cultural system does not really align with a man inheriting a wife's wealth or sharing part in a case of divorce; the children are the rightful inheritors or beneficiaries.

A man is meant to be independent of wife's wealth

How will the children relate with their mother if she is homeless? Or do you suggest the children sleep on the streets when they are in custody of their mother, or you suggest the children should be denied a relationship with their mother.
I didn't see anywhere this was reflected nor insinuated in my write-up, I don't know the reason you threw those suggestions at me but the truth is, any reasonable man will avoid divorce and if it is compelling, will be responsible to both wife and his kids, even without waiting for the court to give order

The only reason I think I won't want to care for the woman is when unfaithfulness caused the break up and I will appropriately take custody of my legitimate kids

wirinet:
Western societies care more for the welfare of the children than even the women, unless what is obtained here.
Well, both laws take care of the kids which is paramount just that they implement more than us and that is killing our own system here....it has huge negative impact on our society

They also both have their weaknesses if you ask me

One more time the Emmanuel Eboue example is exaggerated. Secondly, what do you guys want from women.
You say women should not inherited their fathers properties because they marry and become the responsibility of their husbands. Then you turn around again and say women are not entitled to a share of their husbands property and assets.

So you only need women for sex, maid and surrogate?
U r mixing two different cultures, the one in Nigeria and the one in abroad.

Our culture is simple here, after demise of a husband, his first family (wife(s) and the children) automatically inherits his properties except if will states otherwise.

In the case of divorce, a man by legal responsibility, takes care of the wellbeing of the estranged wife and sponsor their kids, sufficiently but does not equate to a particular sharing formula, most especially when they do not have any joint venture.

This is in contradiction to what happens in western world, they settle for a sharing formula because it is believed they both own their wealth by the virtue of marriage.

In my opinion, divorce should not be seen by the fellow female folks as a means of exploitation and also, male folks should not see spouse's wealth as a gold site to mine

Yeah
This is the truest and realest comment here

The guy Awuzie is not reasoning from the background story of the likes of Eboue, Ndoro and the rest.

Ordinarily, if his estranged wife is rich as claimed and not a gold digger, why does she need to claim 80% initially then later 50?

Why not divorce and move on with their kids since shes rich....

If she had a prorated, legit and fair share in Hakimi's wealth, as suggested by Awuzie how would the custody of their wealth be with his mum, without his estranged wife being aware?

About the rap# case, well, if hakimi is guilty, he should go to jail but if he's not, theres nothing his estranged wife can come up with, to nail him, it will fail.

I personally will not drop off my wealth to my mum's nor anyone's account tho cos Im mature enough to handle wealth but in hakimi case, he's a legend in his world and among his peers or younger ones, he's their hero
