My thinking. Some of this old bungalow could have been built on water-logged land that was sand-filled over time. When converting such into two or three story building, adequate reinforcement should be made for such since the basement could still be water-loged thereby sinking the whole edifice. The engineers that supervise the construction need be call to question.
