Politics › Re: The Benefits Of The Naira Redesign Policy And Why It Should Be Helped To Succeed by Cantonese: 5:43pm On Feb 17, 2023 |
Penguin2: A lot of brouhaha has gone about the Naira redesign policy which has pathetically been dangerously politicized with some politicians scheming on how to defeat it.
While some are scheming to defeat the policy because they think it puts them at a disadvantage, some others are throwing their weight fully behind the policy because they believe it will give them a fighting chance against some supposed heavyweight politicians with heavy financial war chest to prosecute the upcoming elections.
But away from politics, let’s try to make a dispassionate appraisal of the policy, highlight its numerous advantages and why well meaning Nigerians should support it to succeed.
1) CORRUPTION One of the major things that the cashless policy being pursued by the CBN through Naira Redesigning will tackle, greatly, is corruption. Every keen follower of the Nigerian system knows that most illicit funds that are being stolen from govt coffers are moved in cash to avoid being traced by govt anti money laundering agencies. But with the introduction of cashless policy, if it succeeds, it will now be increasingly difficult for these scrupulous elements to move illicit funds as almost every electronic transaction can be traced through the help of BVN.
2) INSECURITY A popular maxim in the security sector is that “security is an expensive venture”. It is the reason billions are budgeted for it.
But just like security, insecurity is similarly an expensive venture. It costs millions to buy guns and maintain supply of logistics. Now, the money used for this venture is moved through the “black market” in cash to avoid triggering suspicion from security agencies.
Now, if this policy succeeds, cash will disappear from the system and these guys will be forced to either source funding in alternative currency or be forced to pack up. I hope you don’t believe the propaganda that they have Ghana Must Go of the new currency?
3) KIDNAPPING AND RANSOM TAKING There’s this question that people have been asking as if it’s a joke but when you think through it critically, you would realize it’s actually true.
When last did you hear of kidnap since the Naira Redesign was introduced? Well, even the kidnappers know that kidnapping anybody and demanding for millions of naira in cash to be dropped off in whatever location is now equivalent to wild goose chase. Because the average Nigerian, and even the rich, cannot boast of 50,000 naira cash right now, not to talk of millions of Naira.
So, in the long run, it’s either these guys start to demand their ransom in dollars, for instance, which they know cannot be easily sourced or they begin to dare the authorities by accepting ransom through bank transfers which will expose them to easy arrest. Or alternatively, they would be forced to close shop.
4) MORE REVENUE FOR GOVERNMENT AND BANKS
For every electronic transaction in Nigeria, government has a 7.5% VAT that will go to it. Now, with almost everyone forced to start making payments via the electronic means, it means that there would be spike in electronic transactions which would also translate to more revenue to the government. A revenue that if used judiciously will aide the provision of social amenities and infrastructures.
On the side of the banks, with near disappearance of cash from the economy, most people who previously did not have a bank account would be forced to open a bank account as absence of it would mean you might have to close shop. Now, just like the government owns about 7.5% VAT on every transaction, so also does the banks have their own percentage which would translate to increase in revenue accruable to banks. And more revenue, banks will have more funds to either recruit more staff or pay their current staff better; a gain for Nigerians working in the bank.
5) GROWTH IN FINTECHs Before this policy, Nigeria was already touted as the Fintech capital of the world, but with this policy, I expect Nigeria to cement her place as the Fintech capital of the world and even give an insurmountable gap to other nations in that regard.
Why do I say this? In that period when bank apps were failing, Nigerians resorted to some Fintect platforms like Opay, PalmPay, Sparkle, etc. I was surprised the day somebody made a payment to me with Sparkle ❇️. Before then, I had only heard about the platform once.
So, that’s it. This policy will help in the development and growth of Fintechs like these which would create heavy financial inflows for their owners. And I’m sure some of these platforms are owned by Nigerians. And even when not owned by Nigerians, they still offer employment to Nigerians and their growth means the possibility of need for more number of staff which will translate to jobs for Nigerians.
There you have it.
While I acknowledge some immediate discomforts that comes with the implementation of the policy, the long term benefits that the policy will bring far outweighs whatever short term discomforts it is causing us.
So, I join the President and the CBN Governor in appealing to us, Nigerians, to allow the policy succeed and not join some scrupulous politicians who are only after their selfish interest to sabotage this laudable policy.
Penguin is a bird of reason

salesbloo: You see why APC Governors are right
I can deposit 500K in 5 different bank accounts making 2.5m meaning old notes is still a legal tender .....since the deadline specified is April 10 . Alternatively if you have individual and corporate accounts ....500k in each account
On the other hand if the above scenario is not plausible because of BVN, instead of depositing it, since there are no new naira notes, I will just spend it .Why should I return them since there is no new naira notes and no deadline. Let continue to recirculate them, CBN want to scam us again. To get old or new notes you pay as high as 20%
Redesign Policy is completely defeated
Am I right or wrong? The joke will be on you, unfortunately, if you believe that the policy is defeated. Old notes have become outdated everywhere in Lagos. The market people have since stopped buying or selling with the old notes. Buses have been rejecting them, and that's with the order of Sanwo Olu in Lagos. We can use Lagos to measure what happening in the rest of the SW. What happens in Lagos has a spill over effect in the rest of the SW especially and in a lot of cases, the rest of the country. Do not forget that Lagos is the commercial capital of the entire federation. The SE and SS have rejected the old notes and they are no longer usable there. How can you reverse that? The CBN knows the tricks that the public will apply. They know that people with several accounts will use several banks. Ask yourself how easy you can find it to deposit in the banks, with the long queues daily. The gra gra of the governors will not help. Everyone has listened to the FG. No reasonable market person wants to listen to El rufai or Ganduje. No one wants to take the risk anymore. The wahala finally is on the politicians, BDCs and criminal gangs across all parties and the country. Now they are the ones who struggle with the matter. |

So we can truly see that APC has never been one party. Clearly they fused several parties together to get power at the center. They never got one single thing right.
Our votes matter. Incompetence must not be allowed anymore. Buhari promised "I am for all, I am for no one". He promised intergrity. He promised credible elections. Now he is going out with his head held high.
PO is needed. |

You now see why they are crying up and down, vote buying gone wrong. The problem now be say how dem go take answer the question, when individuals dey deposit above N5m and companies above N10m. |

jjxxx: When has any Igbo group supported Yoruba candidacy in Nigeria? Here u have most Yoruba groups and forums and individuals supporting PO. I myself and my entire family are all OBIdient and I and a Yoruba man married to a delta Igbo woman. Most of u get the true Yoruba wrong. Mistaking Muslim Yoruba for the rest. Even at that, there are still good Yoruba Muslim that stands for the truth. Truth be told, igbos are most dubious among all tribes in Nigeria. An Igbo man can even betray his fellow Igbo man because of materialism or selfish gain. The most disunited tribe in Nigeria. I schooled in UNIZIK and I know how tribalistic igbos are. But I still don’t care about that and I remain OBIdient because we see some light in him. Obi-Datti for 2023 till 2030 Oga make we hear something abeg. Which of the tribes of this country will you not find dubious people. Can you count how many politicians of other tribes who are either in prison or being proved by the police, NFIU, EFCC or ICPC. You gan gan may be a dubious person if we check. How old were you between 1999 and 2003, when the SW voted in favour of AD? Obasanjo a son of the SW was supported by the SE to defeat AD and ANPP. He got the SE votes again in 2003. Igbos are dubious, yet you are married to an Igbo lady, according to you. Bros carry your yeye story go far. What is very clear is that you have all your life benefitted from the Igbos and your reward to them is your support for PO. His supporters are not there on tribal basis. They are there because they believe in a better country with him as the President. There is nothing like true Yoruba, as far as I am concerned. Individuals differ in their thoughts. Just as Obi has supporters of the Yoruba race, BAT has supporters of the Igbo race. The same goes for Atiku and Kwakwanso, who have solid basis in the SE, SS and SW. Politicians have messed up your mind. If people like you stop degradingly looking at others; If you stop this tribal and racial sentiments; we will have a better country, where we all look at ourselves as we used to before 1999, as Nigerians. |

Your shoes by the Igbos 3. Your phone, laptop, all electronic, electric and technological gadgets are sold by the Igbos. 4. The furniture in your house na Igbos 5. The roof over your head na Igbos 6. Hmmm.
The greatest threat to APC is APC itself. The greatest enemy of APC is APC. The originator of interim government stories are APC members
Opposition parties have not complained. They have not felt threatened in anyway that Buhari will not leave in May. The opposition is not scared in anyway
The dispute over our currency started with APC members. They cry the loudest. The petrol crisis that we experience today in an APC controlled goverent, has APC members screaming the loudest.
It is getting clearer by the day that APC will disintegrate when, by God's grace, BAT is roundly defeated by either Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar or Rabiu Kwakwanso. Those who joined hands, legs, ears, etc, to form the party will demand for their contributions and return to their respective regions.
Buhari has persistently informed Nigerians of his burning desire to leave Aso rock at the end of his tenure in May. APC members do not trust him. Which kind wahala be this abeg? |

Is he not already a bastard. When he left APC to pretentiously join LP, was he not a bastard. Lying to himself that LP is there to share money, when we all know that LP is no SHISHI party, is he not a bastard? When he and his tiny group could not find shishi to grease their pockets from LP, was he not showing himself as a complete bastard?
When we say Nigeria must remain as one, how can we expect it with such irresponsible people in political offices? You have vowed to vote for Tinubu because he is your own and you expect the same Tinubu to get votes from other parts of the country, to become the President of a Federal republic of Nigeria that should include other tribes that you asked your voters to avoid, is that not the height of ignorance, completely foolish and endless servitude to the failed leaders that you believe in?
Obi's supporters thankfully do not follow him on the basis of his tribe. The follow integrity, accountability and trust to deliver.
Bastards who are miles in LP can choose to either leave or remain. If Obi loses, his followers can have their peace of mind, knowing that truthfully they did their best to change Nigeria, elect the best candidate, but tribalists like this yeye fellow chose make life harder.
Once again for me, it is Obi first. If he fails, then it is Atiku and Kwakanso in that order. We know without doubt, that a Tinubu presidency will be catastrophic for other tribes in the SW. |
