It must be really relaxing for you because you have been able to go through almost the whole of your life without ever engaging your brain in any meaningful activity - intelligent people who disagree with an issue usually say why they dont agree with it but ive noticed that because your brain has been shut down for so long you resort to moronic one liners you know what would be interesting ? you falling into a permanent vegetative state - beleive me you'll be more useful to society in that state than now that you are fully conscious.

I'm a northerner by birth so I understand better, just go to Kano on a Friday, incite the crowd at the end of the day, the dead will be counted. Let us leave everything to God. But is it Jonathan that is the better alternative?  He is corrupt, inept and unfit to lead, can't you see that?

Nigeria is divided along ethnic lines there is no doubt about it, but does that mean we allow a man with a track record of theft and corruption to lead nigeria?
I've watched with keen interests all the brouhaha in the Midwestern states of Ohio, winsconsin, Indiana et al, as well as in New jersey, my take on it? Elections matter. Period.

The republicans won the midterms and they are doing exactly as expected. I wish democrats act with similar boldness when they win. I remember the democrats being so disillusioned during the election in 2010, I was disillusioned too. But the clean sweep of democrats at the state level was some shellacking. Now the republicans are doing thier thing and people are protesting. Where were all these people during the election last yr?

Anyway, what has happened has happened, hope democrats get more involved in 2012 or else,
It doesnt matter who is in charge - the big corporations own american politicans - they (US politicians) are all rented whores who do the bidding of their paymasters.  whether you vote republican or democrat - its the same di.ck they use to keep shafting you the electorate.  They let you go to the polls evry 4 years to vote just to make you feel as if you have some control over your destiny, its nothing but a mindfu.ck, they couldnt give two fu.cks what you think, vote in the democrats the same multinational corporations carry on taking the piss out of you - by  shipping jobs overseas cutting public spending and now dismantling rights enshrined in the american constitution.

Did you know that George Bush Jnr took away the right from americans to challenge indefinite imprisonment without trial in 2006?  read up on the military commissions act 2006 which suspends the right of  habeas corpus.

Most americans are too busy watching x factor, america's next top model, how to marry a millionaire and other mind numbing bull sh.it therefore its so easy to pull the wool over the average american's eyes.

However when you start  interfering with people's livelihood as is the case with the governor of wisconsin people start waking up. Lets see how many more americans will snap out of this self induced coma and realise that their  comfortable way of life is now under attack.

Buhari is a man of principle - he is not a thief, traitor or sell out like Jonathan hence his high standards, law abiding nigerian citizens have nothing to fear, but armed robbers and rogues should watch their backs because they will be dealt with accordingly, i am in support of Buhari's zero tolerance approach to those enemies of progress whose only reason for being involved in politics is to line their pockets.

Can somebody tell me why America, Europe, ICC and UN are shouting to the top of roof concerning Libyan crisis when there are other crisis in non oil producing countries begging for their attention like the Ivorian crisis etc?
because their intention is to overthrow Gadaffi and install a controllable puppet who will sell Libyan oil in accordance with the dictates of the criminal gangsters that run the world ie the US/UK govt, IMF and world bank.

The intention is to ra.pe and destroy Libya and eventually turn it into an economic basket case like Nigeria.

They will soon catch up with Gbagbo and flush him out and then replace him with their IMF puppet Ouattara but for now they are giving priority to the ousting of the main person who is standing in their way - Muammar Gadaffi.

Really sad what is going on in this world. US and their allies will stop at nothing to see Ghadaffi out of office so they can install their own stooge there and milk libya dry.
yes he has been there that long, nearly so was Fidel Castro and his people still loved him so. Also Eyadema, Dos Santos of Angola, Saleh of Yemen, Al khalifa of Bahrain. the list goes on and on. At least these men have been able to achieve what our plethora of rulers have not in 50 years. The west should leave libya alone. Same was tried with Cuba but was mostly unsuccessful.
very true mekula, the west are bloodsucking predators, if you refuse to fall under their control they come for you, they will not rest until they annex libya and take control over their oil exports.
The fact that Gadaffi has been in office for 42 years is neither here nor there, he has acheived so much for his people, the west never forgave him for kicking them out of Libya and taking control of the oil reserves there.

nigerian armed robber politicians who claim to practice democracy have handed our soveriegny to shell and collaborated in the complete economic destruction of the nation along with the US controlled IMF and world Bank what do we have to show for all these years of suffering and smiling?

vedaxcool just to highlight my earlier point about the US/UK control over opec nations:
the following opec nations are either allies of the US/UK alliance which means they are no longer operating as sovereign nations and have no control over the price that they sell their oil but instead have to comply with prices imposed on them by the US/UK govt

or enemies - "rogue states" outside the control of the US/UK govt running administrations which are now on a collision path with the US/UK govt economic interests. Administrations of enemy nations have been singled out for overthrow or outright war and destruction:

Algeria - ally

Angola - ally

Ecuador - ally

Indonesia - ally

Iran - enemy

Iraq - ally

Kuwait - ally

Libya - enemy

Nigeria - ally

Qatar - ally

Saudi Arabia - ally

United Arab Emirates - ally

Venezuela - enemy

A simple critical analysis, Russia's military could as well be farting out lies or bubbling the truth, so I see no reason why you are so biased in this matter that only information that suits your aim is what you consider.
critical analysis involves looking at two sides of an argument and weighing them up - something that you have completely failed to do, you are the one who has swallowed the propaganda being churned out by the bbc and al jazeera and taken it as gospel and then have turned around to accuse me of doing the same, why are you so quick to beleive the bbc but not an alternative view?  when determining a case in court is only one side presented to the jury to determine?

Even the US can not confirm that Gadaffi used fighter jets to strafe his own people:

, even the US Department of Defense was forced to concede that such attacks could not be confirmed.

Secretary of Defense Robert Gates was asked recently "Do you see any evidence that he [Qaddafi] actually has fired on his own people from the air?" to which he responded by saying, "We’ve seen the press reports, but we have no confirmation of that." Admiral Mullen added, "That’s correct. We’ve seen no confirmation whatsoever."

http://landdestroyer..com/2011_03_01_archive.html
Does it make sense to you to accept unverified evidence as gospel truth, even where the  US defence secretary has gone on record to say: WE HAVE NO EVIDENCE OF GADDAFFI's attacks on his own peoplehuh

Mr. Man i simply repeated what you wrote earlier:

What is very funny is your selective Judgment Criteria, when the media reports suits your thoughts they become honest facts but when they claim the opposite they are western propaganda, now you want us to believe Al - Jazeera has become part of the West's media and even Al -arabiya has also joined the west, pls Mr, try to be objective, even Gadafi has not accuse the west of formenting the troubles instead he is accusing Drug and AL qaeda, now that clearly refutes what you are saying
.

What is even funnier is your mindnumbing thoughtless swallowing of every lie, distortion and unsubstantiated crap that comes out of the mouths of the pro UK/US  Al jazeera, i dont really care what you beleive, you are beyond help as you lack the basic skills of critical thinking, i cant help you but please do not preach objectivity to me when clearly this is something you yourself lack in very large doses.

Gadaffi's son, Saif stated categorically that western backed opposition forces are behind the attempted overthrow of his father's regime:

learn to process information accurately!!!

Illogical reasoning indeed, Didn't the west lift sanction against Libya? haven't western leaders being visiting Gadaft? Didn't Gadaft offer to compensate the Lockerbie Bombing victims in billions? Do have any idea of what you are talking about? why are you so selective in a matter you are very ignorant of?
DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA OF WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT !!!

Do you know the story behind Lockerbie?

are you aware that all the documentation surrounding al megrahi and the lockerbie bombing investigations carried out in the UK  is subject to what is known as a public interest immmunity certificate which means that they CAN NEVER BE RELEASED INTO THE PUBLIC DOMAIN??

http://news.scotsman.com/comment/Tam-Dalyell-Lockerbie-papers-may.5575560.jp

western leaders lifted sanctions in 2004 BUT subsequently decided that they would be better off without GAdaffi in the picture, especially since Gadaffi was not an easily controllable puppet like Mubarak or Ben Ali.  why is that so difficult for you to understand?  Mubarak was a pro US puppet but they still got rid of him (albeit reluctantly) because he was no longer of any use to the US, this is how it works, the west do not have permanent friends just permanent interests.

Funny indeed Gadaft cannot even determine the price pf tomatoes talkless of oil as it is opec that has a greater power of doing so by collectively cutting the supply of oil, and for some time now Oil prices have been determined more by Speculative forces due to the general instability in the ME, you miss a lot of sense in this statement you made
Your way of reasoning is so upside down, if Libya's oil supply has no effect on oil prices why has the price of oil risen since the Libyan uprising to $115 per barrel?
by the way you talk about opec as if they are independent tell me how many opec members are US allies?
can a US ally act against the interests of the US?

See the graph for more detail, the West are libya greatest oil Importers, so common sense will dictate that they do any thing to prevent any disruption that from happening. this was the chief reason the West failed to react swiftly;
if you could analyse facts accurately you would know that america and the UK which import the least amount of oil from Libya are the interventionists here, america will not be affected by any disruption to oil imports rather Italy and Ireland will suffer the most disruption.

according to your pie chart the US imports just over 1% while britain imports about 10%,  Italy and Ireland import about 23-25% therefore they are the big losers here, not the US or the UK.

Europe can make up for any disruption in oil supply by importing any shortfalls from their ally - Saudi Arabia, therefore the effects of any disruptions in oil supply on them will be minimal, the americans have no problem disrupting the supply of oil for now provided the end result will be them exerting greater control over such an oil rich nation.

LIBYA produces 1.7m of the world's 88m barrels a day (b/d) of oil. OECD countries import 1.2m b/d, and China another 150,000. Our chart shows which of Libya's main export markets are most dependent on it for their oil. At the top of the list, Ireland only accounts for a tiny fraction of Libya's oil exports. Italy is by far the biggest importer: in 2010 it took 376,000 b/d from its former colony. As oil prices surge amid the continuing unrest in the Arab world, importers will look to Saudi Arabia to make up any shortfall. http://www.economist.com/blogs/dailychart/2011/02/libyan_oil

Although both the U.S. and British governments have been heavily criticised for their slow reaction to the incendiary situation, a statement from the White House said the call to the European leaders was made to 'co-ordinate our urgent efforts to respond to developments and ensure that there is appropriate accountability'.

Look at one of the armed protesters, nasty fellow using theirs bare hands to overthrow Gadaft:
Foreign Affairs › Chavez Says He Won't Condemn Gadaffi by cap28(op): 1:32am On Mar 04, 2011
By The Associated Press:

CARACAS, Venezuela – Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said Monday that he won't condemn Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi and he warned that the United States is preparing an invasion of the North African country to seize control of its oil reserves.

"We must be prudent. We know what our political line is: We don't support invasions, or massacres, or anything like that no matter who does it. A campaign of lies is being spun together regarding Libya," said Chavez, in a televised speech to a crowd of graduates who had just received diplomas from state universities.

"I'm not going to condemn him (Gadhafi)," he said. "I'd be a coward to condemn someone who has been my friend."

The U.S. government is behind the campaign to remove Gadhafi, he added.

"The United States has already said it's ready to invade Libya, don't you see? And almost all the countries of Europe are condemning Libya , What do they want. They are rubbing their hands together. Oil is what's important to them," he said.

Chavez noted that numerous countries have condemned Gadhafi for cracking down on Libyans who have risen up against him.

"Maybe they have information that we don't have," he said.

Chavez slammed the United States for moving naval and air forces closer to Libya amid active international discussions about imposing a no-fly zone over the country.

The U.S. has a regular military presence in the Mediterranean Sea, two aircraft carriers in the Persian Gulf area and a wide range of surveillance equipment available for use in the region. Without specific information about what assets were being moved and where, it was impossible to tell whether the U.S. moves were intended as a military threat or were simply a symbolic show of force.

A flight ban seemed unlikely in the short term. Senior U.S. officials said the issue was not discussed during Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton's meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, whose country would have to support such a move if the U.S. and its allies wanted authorization from the U.N. Security Council. Lavrov dismissed the idea in public remarks.

Chavez and Gadhafi, united in their mutual antagonism toward Washington, have forged close ties.

Venezuela's opposition has strongly criticized Chavez for his close relationship to Gadhafi. Earlier on Monday, a coalition of opposition parties warned that Chavez's failure to take a stand against Gadhafi's violent crackdown is smearing Venezuela's reputation.

"By distancing himself from the numerous nations that condemn the criminal actions of the Libyan leader, Chavez makes our country out to be his defender and irresponsibly puts us alongside governments rejected by the international community," the coalition said in a statement.

Opposition politician Gustavo Azocar demanded that Chavez ask Gadhafi to return a replica of a sword that once belonged to 19th-century independence hero Simon Bolivar.

Azocar said in an e-mail sent to The Associated Press on Monday that Venezuela's foreign minister, Nicolas Maduro, "should explain why the government gave the sword of the Liberator, Simon Bolivar, to an assassin like Gadhafi."

Chavez gave the sword to Gadhafi last year. The self-proclaimed socialist has scoffed at suggestions by his adversaries that protests similar to those sweeping the Middle East could occur in Venezuela.

Venezuela and Libya are both major oil exporters. ___ Associated Press writer Fabiola Sanchez in Caracas contributed to this report.

dayokanu:
Has Aljazeera been bought over by the west also?
Aljazeera is a Qatari based multimedia company which originally started out as an independent and objective news broadcaster.  Qatar is a staunch ally of the US and Britain, Al Jazeera are currently trying to obtain access to american news media markets and in order to gain entry they have been ordered by the US to slant their news so that it is reported from a pro US/UK perspective.

As a result Al Jazeera can no longer be relied on as an objective broadcaster.

In addition many of its editors are former BBC world service staff who took up jobs with Al Jazeera further destroying any chance of objectivity and truth.

Here is an article highlighting the outright lies and propaganda reported by Al Jazeera:

Libya is drowning in blood. A vivid picture of awful massacres in Benghazi, hundreds of innocent people killed, military attacking protesters, and a monstrous picture of the country’s leader Muammar Gaddafi who was said to be able to use chemical weapons against the citizens, was created by foreign media organizations, among them, Al-Jazeera. However, the real situation in the country could be quite different from what has been reported so far.

Saint Petersburg Center of Middle Eastern Studies (meast.ru) has recently published the notes by the eyewitnesses of the recent events – Russian and Ukrainian specialists currently working in Libya. The latest data was received on Feb. 26, 2011.

According to the witnesses, the situation in the country is stable. After the Gaddafi’s one hour long speech, there was some kind of euphoria and inspired people were celebrating the victory.

Libyan authorities regard the protests as a conspiracy of al-Qaeda with the support of Qatar satellite channel Al-Jazeera in order to split the country and arrange a zone of instability in Libya as it was done in Iraq. The government stated that innocent young people were used by the extremists to destabilize the country.

Uprising in Libya, the true picture remains to be known

Throughout this conflict Al-Jazeera appeared to incite the violence by apparently distorting information. Eyewitnesses of the events, who tried to contact Al-Jazeera and tell the truth about the "bombings", were not put on air.

As the Guardian has previously reported, Qatar is unapologetically pro-US, which is unusual in a region where rulers often denounce Washington to domestic audiences. It hosted US forces during the Iraq war. Some say the Al-Jazeera station represents a big step forward for Arab democracy, which Washington advocates, the Guardian reported

I strongly believe that Ga'daft' thing got what was coming to him, remember it was his initial reaction to the protesters that made the entire matter spiral out of control, first instead of using peaceful means the maniac came out with guns smoking, hence it was only natural that his people will react very aggressively towards him. Remember Ga'daft'thi made a statement that hardly showed any iota of reason, first he claimed Drug users were on the rampage then went on to blame Al -qaeda, one thing he forgot and Cap28 you failed to see is how the winds of change is Furiously  blowing even the saudi King immediately made certain concessions to his people and pump money into the saudi economy, but what did Gadafi do; he went for blood, rather than finding ways to satiate his people, well good thing though  Gadaft it is on his way out and no amount of theories can stop that;

What the mainstream media and Sayf al-Islam seem to agree on is that Libya's eastern city of Benghazi has been overrun by mobs who have seized military tanks and weapons. For BBC and AlJazeera to call the government's response to arsonists, looters, vandals, and now dangerously and overtly armed mobs, a "massacre," seems somewhat disingenuous and very similar to their coverage of the US-backed mobs that took to the streets in Bangkok in May, 2010.

How would any reasonble person believe mobs could have easily overpowered well trained soldiers in a matter of days? Pls let us use think properly, some of Gadaft it soldiers defected and to me you are just being one sided in this matter, matters like this are usually laced with lots of Rumours you talk as if the protesters were violent from the inset yet we HEARD it was the REGIME tactic that was Violent which in turn precipitated violence from the protesters, yes this might be a conspiracy yes the US might dealing a deadly blow to Gadaft it, but you fail to realise that most of Libya's oil goes to the west, that has simply punctured a hole on your theories, Again the West appeared to respond slowly to the event because they saw their interest going down the drain, so to say the same West that has been benefiting very well from Libya's oil will go back to destroy it is absolutely rediculus and furthermore The West lost part of its credibility by rushing to bed with Gadafti all in the name of oil, but one truth we do know is that Gadaft it is Facing the Poles of Death.
None of the information you have referred to above has been substantiated - it is all based on hearsay, furthermore the russian military  has come out to state categorically that no libyan airstrikes ever took place:

http://tv.globalresearch.ca/2011/03/russian-military-says-libyan-airstrikes-did-not-take-place

In terms of concessions to his people, earlier this year Gadaffi abolished taxes and custom duties on locally-produced and imported food products  making food cheaper and easily accessible to the libyan people:

http://af.reuters.com/article/investingNews/idAFJOE70B0JT20110112

the so called protesters are not unarmed - they are armed rebels who were involved in violent acts right from the beginning, they attacked military installations and depots in order to access more arms, do you know of anywhre in the world where a govt sits back and allows an armed group of rebels to take over their govt?  If armed rebels were to storm capitol hill in washington to try and overthrow the us govt how do you think the us army and police would respond?

do these look like unarmed protesters to you?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hyGo86ZkIis

Also if we are to go along with your story that these people are unarmed protesters - is it normal for politicians of foreign countries to call for them to be armed?:

Senator Lieberman during a joint CNN interview with Senator McCain, went as far as repeatedly and openly calling for additional arms to be sent to rebel groups on the ground, recognizing them as the legitimate government, as well as repeating the call for the no-fly zone already on the table. McCain built on Lieberman's statements claiming the US should "stand up for democracy" not only across the Arab world but as far as China as well, confirming the scale and reach of the globalists' agenda. UK PM David Cameron has also called for providing additional arms to rebel leaders, clarifying the globalist consensus and ensuring a protracted bloodbath ensues.

http://landdestroyer..com/2011/02/destroying-libya.html
Lets say a group of protesters decided to picket the white house tomorrow would you recommend that they be given arms in order to overthrow the US govt?

Your argument about the west benefitting from having Gadaffi there makes no sense, if that were the case why have they been trying to kill him for the past 20 years?

If he is out of the way they can replace with him with a puppet who will sell the oil to them at whatever price they demand.

This democrazy apologists are only trying to find excuse to invade libya the same way they invaded iraq looking for non-existing WMDS.
I agree the west are now desperate to be rid of him by any means necessary, this is why they have concocted this story about him shooting and killing unarmed protesters , as you correctly stated a similar tactic was used by the US when they were hell bent on annexing Iraq and taking over the oil wells there.  Remember that at first they claimed Saddam was not allowing inspectors in to check for weapons and nuclear capabilities then when Sadam pleaded wiht them to come in and check they then switched over to the infamous "he has WMDs and only he knows where they are hidden"

People should not be deceived - the americans and the british are only interested in annexing the country in order to take control of the oil wells ,  they lured him into a state of false security and have now turned around to stab him in the back, they entered into lucrative oil and gas contracts with him after lifting sanctions in 2004 and have now felt that it would be better to get rid of him once and for all and replace him with someone they can control a lot easier. This is why he is now saying that they have  betrayed him.

The US and the british  have been trying to get rid of him for years, in 1986 Reagan bombed his residence killing his infant daughter,  in 1996 MI6 (british intelligence) tried to kill him but also failed:

No surprises here,   soon their going to disprove the "tens of thousands dead" and the "vicious African mercenaries in yellow hats" perhaps the news will even finally stop calling the insurrectionists protesters and refer to them rebels because that's what they are. Its disgusting to see how much the media does the will of the government. I hate the fuggin "west" more and more everyday.

that's not to say that i support Qaddafi but the whole situation is so biased and untruthfull. and there are ulterior motives at play.
None of the reports coming from the western media (BBC, Al Jazeera -Al Jazeera is controlled by the west, CNN etc) have been substantiated, read the reports - you will see that the reporters merely quote "eyewitness accounts".  Nothing is based on hard evidence.

The BBC even admit that all their reports are based on second hand unverified eye witness accounts, here is what a BBC reporter had to say on 20 Feb:

"Reporting from Libya is tricky at the best of times,

For 41 years, Muammar Gaddafi - the self-proclaimed "Brotherly Leader and Guide of the Revolution" - has made life difficult for the Western media. While British nationals can enter many of the world's 192 countries without visas, or collect them on arrival, Libya is one of the exceptions. There, the door is firmly shut to international journalists, local reporters face intimidation and the threat of worse. It explains why, in contrast to recent events in Tunisia, Egypt and Bahrain, we're unable to report from inside Libya on the protests taking place there and the authorities violent response.
And that's an uncomfortable place for us to be".

http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/theeditors/2011/02/reporting_from_libya.html

the "protesters" are now actually being referred to as rebels which is what they were from the start, do peaceful protesters seize army vehicles and weapons?

wedapeople i dont want to take away from what you are trying to do here but id just like to point out a few facts about nigeria.

remember when ken saro wiwa rallied his people and started campaigning against shell and its exploitation and environmental destruction of the niger delta - what happened to him?

was he not protesting non violently?

why did abacha order his arrest and subsequent extra judicial execution?

why did the united nations security council not intervene in the way they have done with lightening speed in the case of Libya and clamp down on the abacha regime?

how about the killings of peaceful unarmed protesters in odi and gbaramatu? why didnt the united nations declare a no fly zone over the niger delta region when yaradua sent helicopter gunships to drop bombs on unarmed civilians in this area?

Okay now ask yourself this question, if the "international community" did not run to your defence during such a blatant show of brutality and disregard for the human rights of nigerian citizens by their ally the nigerian govt, what are the chances they will come running to your rescue when you seek to topple or overthrow the nigerian govt ?

Ask yourself these question? who arms the nigerian govt? why do they do this?  who dictates and determines nigerian economic policy? why do they do it?

Finally if you financed and controlled a person or entity, would you support practices that seek to bring that person or entity down or would you fight against forces who seek to bring that entity down?

your response to the above questions will be much appreciated.

"All war is based on Deception" - "in war, the first casualty is truth"; Sun Tzu's Art of War

The reports of Libya mobilizing its air force against its own people spread quickly around the world. However, Russia's military chiefs say they have been monitoring from space - and the pictures tell a different story.

According to Al Jazeera and BBC, on February 22 Libyan government inflicted airstrikes on Benghazi -- the country's largest city -- and on the capital Tripoli. However, the Russian military, monitoring the unrest via satellite from the very beginning, says nothing of the sort was going on on the ground.

At this point, the Russian military is saying that, as far as they are concerned, the attacks some media were reporting have never occurred. The same sources in Russia's military establishment say they are also monitoring the situation around Libya's oil pumping facilities.

Kgdavid:
the key term really is "the will of the masses", Yayha Jammeh has brought quite a lot of development to the Gambia and contrary to the situation in the northern african countries, it would appear that this regime is by and large a popular one. Yayha Jammeh apparently is a man with a vision and ill tell you one thing, if nigeria had his kind of leadership we would have gone places! the gambia certainly enjoys much more power supply than nigeria, workers get paid on time, crime is minimal and rarely of the serious nature, religious/sectarian violence are unheard of, education has been made available to a high degree, infrastructure and technology are fast developing and it is a gross misrepresentation to say that the wealth of the country has been handed over to brittish and lebanese businessmen while gambians are left to wallow in poverty. up to a certain grade of skilled is labour is highly taxable for foreigners making jobs accessible for qualified gambians and there are lots of wealthy Gambians. in any case since when has it become 'not smart' to encourage investment?? note that although the man has been in power for quite some time, it has been acheived through constitutional means and justified by the development of the country. nigeria is in no better state than the gambia. Ghaddafi on the other hand is a racist lunatic who claims he has no official position in the government.
Have you been to Gambia? Have you seen the abject poverty that the majority of gambians wallow in over there?

If life were indeed so comfortable for the average gambian why is it that there are so many of them prostituting themselves to western tourists on the beach resorts? Why dont any of them run any of the tourist businessess? why is it that the gambians who work in these businesses are mainly waiters, waitresses, cooks, gardeners taking orders from english and lebanese managers?

Im not going to lay the blame entirely at the feet of Jammeh though because Gambia is not a resource rich country like nigeria and relies on tourism and peanut exports for its revenue.

Any economist will tell you that you dont hand over your entire wealth generating sector to foreigners and then allow them to transfer all the wealth generated from these businesses to their own countrries without putting anything bavck into the local community.  This is what Jammeh is doing, there is very little development outside the tourist areas- does that make sense to you?

For you to talk about the will of the people makes no sense - this is a man who has killed journalists and administered poison to his people - a man who has said "whether you vote for me or not i will remain in power" - who in their right mind would challenge such a man? its not about the will of the people, the people have been cowed into submission.

What do you know about Gadaffi being a racist?  if he is indeed a racist why did he give huge sums of money to the ANC to fight the aparthied regime of south africa, why did he give millions of dollars to Louis Farrakhan to fund educational scholarships for african americans?
Why has he always been involved with funding anti imperialist movements all over the world.

If he is indeed a lunatic how come Libyans enjoy a higher standard of living than the average nigerian whose leaders are supposedly sane, how come unljike nigerian leaders he has used oil revenues to improve the living standards of his people rather than have them transferred into a personal swiss account?
cap28,

so why do you think white fashion designers prefer to use dark skin black girls sometimes over light skin ones?
whereas black entertainers prefer to use light skin or mixed models.

to me the promotion of mixed race women as being more beautiful (at least presently) is propagated by we blacks ourselves!!! not by whites.
most black entertainers will tell you in a heart beat that they prefer lighter skin, long straight hair girls in their videos etc. majority of their audience is black by the way.

case in point: I think a dark skinned african looking girl with nappy hair will be found more beautiful by whites than by blacks.

which goes back to Ndipe's comment that we need to embrace our selves before asking other races to do the same.
i admit that SOME fashion designers use dark skinned black women rather than lighter skinned black women but this is actually not common and it tends to be european  haute couture fashion designers like Yves St Laurent and Christian Dior which are aimed at a smaller audience  - perhaps the europeans appreciate darker skinned black women - im not really sure, on the whole women who are seen as being closer to the supposed ideal of white beauty tend to be the ones that are used when targeting a wider audience  ie lighter skinned with european facial features and body shape.

With the black entertainers i would say that they are victims of internalised racism which has taught them to be ashamed of being black, years and years of brainwashing and negative imagery has made them place the beauty of every other woman over and above the beauty of their own women, sadly many of these black entertainers beleive non white women are prettier than their own women.

You're probably right about black people promoting mixed race people above their own black people in terms of beauty, but again doesnt this stem from years of brainwashing and internalised feelings of inferiority complex caused by white racism?

very interesting and insightful.

I have had a lot of debates with NLs on here in which ive raised many of the issues highlighted in this documentary to which the common refrain has been "why are you always blaming the white man for our problems" well, perhaps after watching this documentary they will understand why.

I am glad that the white man himself actually owns up to the fact that europeans systematically destroyed and continue to destroy any hopes that africa may have to try and lift itself out of poverty.

I would advise NLs to watch this documentary as many of them do not understand the reasons why africa is in such a deplorable state.

I am optimistic that things can change for the better after all the Bolivians were able to expel american multinational bechtel from their country, but this will not be possible unless we have the right kind of leadership in office, unfortunately the current leaders we have are collaborators and therefore positive change may not be somethign that might happen in nigeria any time soon.

^^^^^

thanks guys, its time to take a step back and analyse what is really going on in Libya and find out why the west are moving faster than the speed of light in order to try and oust Gadaffi.

The situation in Libya is all the more tragic because it is all predicated on lies, omissions, half truths and propaganda all churned out by the  western corporate media.

Remember how long it took Obama to tell Mubarak to step down despite the fact that Mubarak was also said to have been involved in shooting and killing protesters?

Gadaffi unlike Mubarak is not a western puppet, he has not colluded with america and Israel to exploit and betray his own people, instead he has continued to act in their interest unlike Mubarak and Ben Ali of Tunisia, therein lies the problem.  He's simply too much of a maverick and has to be brought under control or in this case toppled.

Gadaffi is a man who has done more for his people than any african head of state on record, a man who has given financial assistance to all progressive groups around the world fighting to throw off the shackles of oppression, a man who provided financial assistance to the ANC during the aparthied era and even to the IRA who were fighing to rid themselves of british imperialism, a man who was able to take a country which was nothing but barren desert and modernise it into what it is today.  What is happening to gadaffi today is what happened to Patrice Lumumba in 1965, Kwame Nkrumah in 1966, Thomas Sankara in 1987 and numerous other progressive anti imperialist heads of state.

The situation is dire - you insist on using the resources of your country for the benefit of your people and you end up being demonised and eventually overthrown, but if you open up your nation for the western multinationals to rap.pe, pillage and plunder you can rest assured that you will be protected and allowed to remain in office for as long as you want  as was the case with the late Omar Bongo of gabon who remained in power for 42 years until his death last year (his son has now taken over from him) as well as the late Mobutu (32 years), Paul biya of Cameroun 28 years and many other african despots who have shamelessly sold off their nations to capitalist predators.

If the west succeed in their plans to annex Libya and appropriate the oil wells, Libya will either deteriorate into another war ravaged mess like Iraq or it will end up an economic basket case like Nigeria in which a foreign multinational - Shell runs an entire country in collaboration with a criminal cabal leaving the vast majority of the country to live in abject poverty.

If you check what is currently happening in Egypt  you will find that the old US puppet Mubarak has now been replaced with a new US puppet  - a military dictatorship, let this be a lesson to all those people who actually think that what is happening in the arab world  is a legitimate revolution - america is an empire which is heading for economic collapse, therefore it is desperate, it will stop at nothing to retain its iron grip and control over the world's wealth and resources - today it is Libya, tomorrow it will be another resource rich but militarily weak country, this is just the beginning.

World cheers as the CIA plunges Libya into chaos by David Rothscum

How was Libya doing under the rule of Gadaffi? How bad did the people have it? Were they oppressed as we now commonly accept as fact? Let us look at the facts for a moment.

Before the chaos erupted, Libya had a lower incarceration rate than the Czech republic. It ranked 61st. Libya had the lowest infant mortality rate of all of Africa. Libya had the highest life expectancy of all of Africa. Less than 5% of the population was undernourished. In response to the rising food prices around the world, the government of Libya abolished ALL taxes on food.

People in Libya were rich. Libya had the highest gross domestic product (GDP) at purchasing power parity (PPP) per capita of all of Africa. The government took care to ensure that everyone in the country shared in the wealth. Libya had the highest Human Development Index of any country on the continent. The wealth was distributed equally. In Libya, a lower percentage of people lived below the poverty line than in the Netherlands.

How does Libya get so rich? The answer is oil. The country has a lot of oil, and does not allow foreign corporations to steal the resources while the population starves, unlike countries like Nigeria, a country that is basically run by Shell.

Like any country, Libya suffers from a government with corrupt bureaucrats that try to gain a bigger portion of the pie at the cost of everyone else. In response to this, Kadaffi called for the oil revenue to be distributed directly to the people, because in his opinion, the government was failing the people. However, unlike the article claims, Kadaffi is not the president of Libya. In fact he holds no official position in the government. This is the big mistake that people make. They claim that Kadaffi rules over Libya when in fact he doesn't, his position is more or less ceremonial. He should be compared to a founding father.

The true leader of Libya is an indirectly elected prime-minister. The current prime-minister is
Baghdadi Mahmudi. Calling Khadaffi the leader of Libya is comparable to calling Akihito the leader of Japan. Contrary to what your media is sketching, opinions in Libya vary. Some people support Gadaffi but want Mahmudi out. Others want both out. Many just want to live their life in peace. However, effort is taken to sketch the appearance of a popular revolt against the supposed leader of Libya, Gadaffi, when in fact he is just the architect of Libya's current political system, a mixture of pan-Arabism, socialism, and Islamic government.

Videos of Pro-Gaddafi protests are disappearing from Youtube as we speak. "Pro Gaddafi Anti Baghdadi Mahmudi demonstrations in" youtube.com/watch?v=Ce5fLGNg0sk is gone. "Pro Gaddafi protests in front of Libyan embassy London" youtube.com/watch?v=pRwv0Ac8qbc Is gone. Youtube deletes any video containing gore normally, except when it's from Libya. Apparently more traumatizing to it's viewers than chopped up bodies are Libyans who do not jump on the bandwagon and enter the streets to force Gadaffi out.

Are the protesters in Libya comparable to the protesters in Egypt and Tunisia? Not at all. The governments reaction is more violent, and obviously excessive violence is being used. However let us look for a moment at the actions of the protesters. The building of the the general people's congress, the parliament of Libya, was put on fire by angry protestors. This is comparable to protesters putting the United States Capitol on fire. Do you think that for even a moment the US government would sit idly by as protesters put the US capitol on fire?

The riots erupting now are not secular youth desiring change, or anything like we saw in Egypt and Tunisia. A group calling itself "Islamic Emirate of Barka", the former name of the North-Western part of Libya, has taken numerous hostages, and killed two policemen. This is not a recent development. On Friday, the 18th of February, the group stole 70 military vehicles after attacking a port and killing four soldiers. Unfortunately, a military colonel has joined the group and provided them with further weapons. The uprising started in the eastern city of Benghazi. The Italian foreign minister has raised his fears of an Islamic Emirate of Benghazi declaring itself independent.

So where does this sudden uprising come from? The answer is that the same groups the US has been funding for decades are now taking their chance to gain control over the nation. A group recently arrested in Libya consisted of dozens of foreign nationals that were involved in numerous acts of looting and sabotage. The Libyan government could not rule out links to Israel.

Great Britain funded an Al Qaeda cell in Libya, in an attempt to assassinate Gadaffi. The main opposition group in Libya now is the National Front for the Salvation of Libya. This opposition group is being funded by Saudi Arabia, the CIA, and French Intelligence. This group unified itself with other opposition groups, to become the National Conference for the Libyan Opposition. It was this organization that called for the "Day of Rage" that plunged Libya into chaos on February 17 of this year.

It did this in Benghazi, a conservative city that has always been opposed to Gadaffi's rule. It should be noted that the National Front for the Salvation of Libya is well armed. In 1996 the group tried to unleash a revolution in the eastern part of Libya before. It used the Libyan National Army, the armed division of the NFSL to begin this failed uprising.

Why is the United States so opposed to Gadaffi? He is the main threat to US hegemony in Africa, because he attempts to unite the continent against the United States. This concept is called the United States of Africa. In fact, Gadaffi holds all sorts of ideas that are contrary to US interests. The man blames the United States government for the creation of HIV. He claims that Israel is behind the assasination of Martin Luther King and president John. F. Kennedy. He says that the 9/11 hijackers were trained in the US. He also urged Libyans to donate blood to Americans after 9/11. Khadaffi is also the last of a generation of moderate socialist pan-Arab revolutionaries that is still in power, after Nasser and Hussein have been eliminated, and Syria has aligned itself with Iran.

The United States and Israel however have no interest in a strong Arab world. In fact it seems that elementary to the plan is bringing Libya to its knees through chaos and anarchy. In late 2010, the United Kingdom was still propping up the Libyan government through lucrative arms sales. Nothing is a better guarantee to destroy Libya than a bloody civil war. The tribal system that is still strong in Libya is useful to exploit to generate such a war since Libya has historically been divided into various tribal groups.

This is also why the Libyan government responds by importing mercenaries. Tribal allegiances go before allegiance to the government, especially in Benghazi, and thus the central government has no control over the eastern part of the country anymore. The alternative to mercenaries is a conflict between the various ethnic groups. Gadaffi has tried for 41 years to make the country more homogeneous, but opposition groups funded by outside forced will take little more than a few days to put the country back into the 19th century, before the region was conquered and unified by Europeans. The violence is indeed excessive, but everyone seems to forget that the situation is not the same as in Tunis and Egypt. Tribal ties play a far greater role, and thus the conflict will unfortunately be bloodier.

Please remember at all times that the violent Libyan civil war unfolding now is not comparable to the revolutions seen in Tunisia and Egypt. Both of these revolutions involved peaceful protesters suffering from poverty, in opposition to their corrupt governments. The chaos in Libyan consists of a mixture of tribal conflicts, conflict over oil revenue (since most oil is in the east of the country), radical islamists opposed to Gadaffi's system of government, and outside destabilization by Western funded exile groups.

Gadaffi took control in a bloodless coup from a sick monarch away for medical treatment 41 years ago. His ideology is based on unification and he attempted to peacefully merge his country with Egypt and Syria. It would take a miracle for the violence unfolding now to lead to a single stable democratic government in Libya, with full control over the entire country. The country is more than twice the size of Pakistan, but with 6 million inhabitants. Endless deserts divide many of the cities in the nation. If anything we should ask ourselves how many more nations will be shattered into pieces in the coming months, as the world cheers.

Take a look at part 2.

Foreign Affairs › Libya And Imperialism: The real reasons behind proposed western intervention by cap28(op): 12:33pm On Mar 01, 2011
Libya and Imperialism

by Sara Flounders

Global Research, February 24, 2011
workers.org

Of all the struggles going on in North Africa and the Middle East right now, the most difficult to unravel is the one in Libya.

What is the character of the opposition to the Gadhafi regime, which reportedly now controls the eastern city of Benghazi?

Is it just coincidence that the rebellion started in Benghazi, which is north of Libya’s richest oil fields as well as close to most of its oil and gas pipelines, refineries and its LNG port? Is there a plan to partition the country?

What is the risk of imperialist military intervention, which poses the gravest danger for the people of the entire region?

Libya is not like Egypt. Its leader, Moammar al-Gadhafi, has not been an imperialist puppet like Hosni Mubarak. For many years, Gadhafi was allied to countries and movements fighting imperialism. On taking power in 1969 through a military coup, he nationalized Libya’s oil and used much of that money to develop the Libyan economy. Conditions of life improved dramatically for the people.

For that, the imperialists were determined to grind Libya down. The U.S. actually launched air strikes on Tripoli and Benghazi in 1986 that killed 60 people, including Gadhafi’s infant daughter – which is rarely mentioned by the corporate media. Devastating sanctions were imposed by both the U.S. and the U.N. to wreck the Libyan economy.

After the U.S. invaded Iraq in 2003 and leveled much of Baghdad with a bombing campaign that the Pentagon exultantly called “shock and awe,” Gadhafi tried to ward off further threatened aggression on Libya by making big political and economic concessions to the imperialists. He opened the economy to foreign banks and corporations; he agreed to IMF demands for “structural adjustment,” privatizing many state-owned enterprises and cutting state subsidies on necessities like food and fuel.

The Libyan people are suffering from the same high prices and unemployment that underlie the rebellions elsewhere and that flow from the worldwide capitalist economic crisis.

There can be no doubt that the struggle sweeping the Arab world for political freedom and economic justice has also struck a chord in Libya. There can be no doubt that discontent with the Gadhafi regime is motivating a significant section of the population.

However, it is important for progressives to know that many of the people being promoted in the West as leaders of the opposition are long-time agents of imperialism. The BBC on Feb. 22 showed footage of crowds in Benghazi pulling down the green flag of the republic and replacing it with the flag of the overthrown monarch King Idris – who had been a puppet of U.S. and British imperialism.

The Western media are basing a great deal of their reporting on supposed facts provided by the exile group National Front for the Salvation of Libya, which was trained and financed by the U.S. CIA. Google the front’s name plus CIA and you will find hundreds of references.

The Wall Street Journal in a Feb. 23 editorial wrote that “The U.S. and Europe should help Libyans overthrow the Gadhafi regime.” There is no talk in the board rooms or the corridors of Washington about intervening to help the people of Kuwait or Saudi Arabia or Bahrain overthrow their dictatorial rulers. Even with all the lip service being paid to the mass struggles rocking the region right now, that would be unthinkable. As for Egypt and Tunisia, the imperialists are pulling every string they can to get the masses off the streets.

There was no talk of U.S. intervention to help the Palestinian people of Gaza when thousands died from being blockaded, bombed and invaded by Israel. Just the opposite. The U.S. intervened to prevent condemnation of the Zionist settler state.

Imperialism’s interest in Libya is not hard to find. Bloomberg.com wrote on Feb. 22 that while Libya is Africa’s third-largest producer of oil, it has the continent’s largest proven reserves – 44.3 billion barrels. It is a country with a relatively small population but the potential to produce huge profits for the giant oil companies. That’s how the super-rich look at it, and that’s what underlies their professed concern for the people’s democratic rights in Libya.

Getting concessions out of Gadhafi is not enough for the imperialist oil barons. They want a government that they can own outright, lock, stock and barrel. They have never forgiven Gadhafi for overthrowing the monarchy and nationalizing the oil. Fidel Castro of Cuba in his column “Reflections” takes note of imperialism’s hunger for oil and warns that the U.S. is laying the basis for military intervention in Libya.

In the U.S., some forces are trying to mobilize a street-level campaign promoting such U.S. intervention. We should oppose this outright and remind any well-intentioned people of the millions killed and displaced by U.S. intervention in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Progressive people are in sympathy with what they see as a popular movement in Libya. We can help such a movement most by supporting its just demands while rejecting imperialist intervention, in whatever form it may take. It is the people of Libya who must decide their future.

In your blind rage & hatred for America & its allies you have failed to give any credit to the protesters in those countries fighting & dying for what is just & right. Is it that you think these protests are uneccessary & misplaced. It is about time you start acknowledging the efforts of the citizens of the affected countries.
Are you saying it was the US that precipitated the demonstrations in Egypt,America's strongest ally in the mid east for over 30 years?Like someone alluded, you must be high on cow dung or something in similar mould
In your blind and unswerving loyalty to the very people who hate you, you willingly swallow the propaganda of the western corporate media.

If you had followed my previous posts regarding these recent "revolutions" in the middle east you would have discovered that i acknowledged and gave credit to the protesters who were initially involved in the movement in Egypt, what i did say however was that these protest movement had subsequently been hijacked by elements who were being funded by US intelligence groups.

The problem with people like you is that you have no knowledge or understanding of US foreign policy this means that you will always be easy prey to propagandists with a hidden agenda.  If you had any knowledge or understanding of how america and other western nations have operated throughout the world i would not be having this convesation with you.

You dont have to take my word for anything just apply critical thinking for once , the people who you defend are actively working to keep you in a position of eternal subservience but it will only become obvious to you when its too late.

If you are truly interestesed in educating yourself and not simply following and swallowing propaganda, learn to keep an open mind.

There is no excuse for being an ignoramus in the age of information technology, I would advise you to google the following NGO's and the role they have been playing in colour revolutions in  the middle east:  NED (National Endowment for Democracy) and  Freedom House .

Yahaya Jammeh was trained at the notorious school of the americas (a US run military academy ) most of the alumni of this school are military dictators who came to power through military coup d'etats another famous alumni of this school is former dictator of Panama Manuel Noriega.

Jammeh should remember how the US govt turned against Noriega when he stopped following their orders, he should also remember that the US invaded Panama, destroyed Noriega's army and arrested him and took him to Miami where he served over 20 years in a miami jail.

I can assure him that if he ever falls out of favour with america the same treatment will be meted out to  him.

Gaddafi signs agreements with the eneimies of Africa starting (15 May 2006) for oil agreements. Now The western Criminals seemingly want to intervene because they will lose money on thier oil revenue so sad.

The Sad part is some of our leaders in Africa are used like cheap love-peddlers so sad.
Amhatu i hear Sudan is next on the list of countries to be destabilised by US sponsored protest groups - the aim being to shut down China's access to oil exports.
Excellent comment, but you make it sound like there's no racism or bigotry in other parts of the world. You live in Europe. You mean to tell me there's no bigotry in Europe including jolly old England? Look at the anti-Muslim sentiment in Europe. It's huge! I assume you've heard of the BNP.

By the way, not every black person in the Western Hemisphere, whether they're American or Dominican, hate being black. Most are not like Sammy Sosa.
thanks ADM, my response was limited to the situation in the US thats why i focused in on the history of "black face" in america.

There is rabid racism all over europe, England is very racist and blacks here do not have access to the same level of opportunities or even enjoy the same levels of success as blacks in america.  There is also a  racial hierarchy here with whites at the top, asians and other non black groups in the middle and blacks at the bottom, our low population (approximately 3% ensures that we have very little influence in determining policy).

The BNP have a huge following amongst working class whites who have been affected the most by  job losses following the economic downturn, in a bid to blame someone for the economic mess created by the last labour govt and the ongoing brutal austerity measures being implemented by the tory/liberal democrat govt they look for scapegoats and the easiest people to blame are immigrants.

The reality is that the BNP are  opportunitists who manipulate and feed off the deepseated racism that many white british people feel towards non white people in this country.

You are right the anti muslim sentiment IS huge, it has deliberately been whipped up by the right wing media who created "Islamophobia" (an irrational fear or hatred of muslims) by linking terrorist attacks carried out in america and britain with islam, again this was done deliberately by the media in order to create a divide and rule environment, the more divided you are the easier you are to control as they say.

I think Sammy Sosa is an extreme example of a self hating black person ,  there are however,  a lot of black people in the west who secretely hate being black - this is played out in many ways, one example being the promotion of black beauty by the western corporate media by using mixed race women as a representation of black beauty - almost every "black woman" used to promote black beauty in the west is of mixed race origin (Halle Berry, Vanessa Williams, Beyonce) as opposed to India Irie, Lauren Hill or any black woman who does not have obvious europeans facial features or skin tone.

The years of racism that diasporan blacks have been subjected to at the hands of whites has now manifested itself as internalised self hatred.
Its gradually spreading to africa as well because of the insidious effect of the toxic western media and many african people now show symptoms of this mindset.

She's right, i went there on holiday 3 years ago, its a tiny strip of land carved out of Senegal with beautiful beaches however none of the tourist spots are owned by indigenous gambian people, just british and lebanese people.

There is very little development outside the tourist areas, a lot of the young men and women are unemployed and hang around the tourist joints preying on western tourists.

Yahaya Jammeh has been in power for almost 20 years and has done nothing for his people other than open the country up to foreign predatory businesses, therefore he is not qualified to stand in judgement against anyone and definitely not Gadaffi.
