Katsumoto: The same leftwing lazy rhetoric.

I asked you before and I will ask you again. What policies would you have implemented in 1979 considering the following

1. A decline in the UK mining industry

2. High inflation

3. High debt (the labour government had borrowed from the IMF)

4. High taxes from Labour (98% marginal rate)

The problem with people like you is that you expect the government to do everything for you.

Thatcher dealt with a devastating economic conditions with skill and wisdom.

She understood that the mining industry was dying and reformed trade unions so much that the unions could not hold the country hostage. Did the unions not bring down the Labour government of Callaghan in 1979?

Many home owners in the UK owe owning their homes to Thatcher. What was the rate of home ownership before Thatcher? Wasn't it only rich people who owned their homes? With Thatcher, individuals could also own shares. 11 MILLION people bought shares after privatization. That is still the level of share ownership in the UK today. The only people that didn't benefit were those who expected the government to do everything for them. Many clever people became millionaires in the 80S BECAUSE she reformed the markets.
Let me ask you a questionn - Did it make sense to shut down the mines and dump thousands of people onto the dole queue ? was that more cost effective? I really dont understand the logic of creating mass unemployment and adding more pressure to the social security system .

Mister blinkered man - let me list to you the legacy of Thatcher's mine closures: drug addiction, astronomical rise in crime rate, suicide increase, the rise of casual exploitative non unionised labour , alcholism adding not only more pressure to the social security system but to the national health service - was it worth it?

Today many british workers can be hired and fired at the whim of their employer all as a result of Thatchers dismantling of the unions - again i ask you - was it worth it?

So thatcher created home ownership - please get your facts right - you do not own your home if the bank grants you a mortage on it -you are merely a tenant of the property until you have paid off the mortgage to the bank - shortly after the 1980 right to buy scheme was lauunched by Thatcher interest rates shot up this resulted in many of these former so called home owners losing their properties because their mortgage repayments became astronomically expensive - so in other words she fooled the british public into a sense of false security and later snatched the rug from underneath them by putting up intrest rates - how was this a good thing?

The only people who benefitted from thatcher's policy were the upper middle class and the city of london bankers who make up a tiny minority of the british public - the average joe lost out. I dont expect you to understand any of this because being of a typical nigerian mindset you identify with your oppressor even when that oppressor has his foot on your neck.

Katsumoto: And why should folks who were running from their own countries and who couldn't bring positive change to their own countries have a say in how another country is run?
I think you will find that Britain were behind the reason that those folks were leaving their countries of origin for greener pastures.

Lets take nigeria for instance - who installed a puppet regime of northerners on the south in 1960?

who armed and funded the nigerian army against the biafrans?

who installed Obasanjo part 1 and 2 and IBB on us?

who removed buhari ?

who was the architect of SAP?

occam: One more reason to hate this woman:

She enacted tighter immigration rules. Any child born in Britain but of foreign parents does not automatically become a British citizen. This was a very calculated and callous move to hold on to power. Why? knowing that only xenophobic minds will support her "white only" conservative ideas for Britain.

She embraced ideas of the British National Party. Are the BNPs still on the rise? I doubt if a party like that can even exist today with more ethnic groups in Britain
You are very correct -immigration and race have always been fundamental to the conservative party who always use it to secure votes when their policies are becoming unpopular.

In a 1979 election campaign speech she successfully secured victory by warning the already racist white british of the need to clamp down on non white immigration, forgetting that less than two decades earlier, west indian workers were brought to the UK to do all the menial jobs due to huge labour shortages that britain was suffering as a result of the second world war.

JeSoul: Fellow NLders,
please try to make your points without insults, bad language or trying to circumvent the word-filter. Such posts will be hidden, and those who quote such posts will unfortunately also be hidden as well. Thank you.
You do this forum a great disservice by hiding posts unecessarily, i think your focus should be on the substance of what the person is posting and not on the words being used. I mean what was the point of hiding a post which is merely a quote from another source ? it makes zero sense to censor poster's views simply because they offend your very fragile and delicate sensibilities.

VolvoS60: ^^^^^

She wasn't all bad. Some say if she hadn't grabbed the UK by the scruff of its neck, the streets would still be full of garbage and the labour/trade unions would have become completely invincible by now. The story is that Britain was a whisker away from a military takover in the 1970s (as improbable as this sounds) with the way things were then.

Her views on the apartheid regime in SA tell us all we need to know about how she saw Africans in general. Nobody is under any illusions there. But I think she was a far better economic manager and a more rounded leader than Ronald Reagan.
I dont get where you are coming from - why was it necessary for her to have closed down the mines?

why was it necessary for her to have spear headed the deindustrialisation of the british economy - which led to major outsourcing of british manufacturing jobs to the far east and mass unemployment in this country?

she is the architect of the problems we are having today in this country - she started the deregulation of the financial industry which is what enabled the bankers to run wild and which culminated in the recent 2008 financial collapse - i mean everything this woman touched turned to ashes - even the right to buy housing programme was unsustainable because not long after interest rates went through the roof and many people who purchased council homes under this scheme could no longer afford their mortgages.

Don't mind them, bros. It's the same sort of uncleTom Nigger mentality that's forever on display on NL for all the world to laugh at us. Self-loathing ignorant B.S.

I just read a comment on a youtube video written 3 years ago about thatcher:

When Maggie dies, can someone stick a wooden stake in her heart just to make sure she never comes back or is reincarnated.
I will be going back to Middlesbrough on that day where me and my local neighbourhood will be holding a street party.
this was written three years ago - this is the level of hatred working class british have for this woman because of the havoc she wreaked in their lives.
Foreign AffairsRe: Margaret Thatcher Is Dead by cap28: 4:14pm On Apr 08, 2013
VolvoS60: Thatcher...a highly controversial figure.

Only time will tell whether her promotion of financialization (and the associated decline in manufacturing) was the right way to go for the UK.
I think the evidence is all around you to see.
Foreign AffairsRe: Margaret Thatcher Is Dead by cap28: 4:12pm On Apr 08, 2013
Reference: C'mon. Gordon Brown was equally ejected like a spent shell casing even after kicking the unions to the kerb. No one wants an ungovernable state like France.

Look at the figures. 25 % of EU cash goes to bedding and pillows for farmers that contribute a farthing - 1% of GDP. That's what unions can do to your wallet. Rob the hardworking and enterprising and give to the indolent and their mafioso leadership.

Thank God for misi iron fists if not the only thing Britain will have been exporting today is coal and perhaps cottage cheese and of course cider.
Funny, how come britain is running a trade and budget deficit and had to bail the banks out to the tune of over £1 trillion pounds followng the banking crisis of 2008?

Brown was merely continuing a legacy that had been put in place by Thatcher. New Labour is a watered down version of the Conservative party.

Cameron dare not give this woman a state funeral
Foreign AffairsRe: Margaret Thatcher Is Dead by cap28: 3:04pm On Apr 08, 2013
Reference: He,he,he. Because she fought organised labour to a stand still. That's why Britain today is not another Spain or Greece run by unions and sinking under mountains of EU bailout cash.
What is it with you people? its not as if you are benefitting in any way from any of the policies that she implemented - the unions were responsible for protecting the rights of ordinary british workers - if we had a decent worker's union in nigeria do you thing Goodluck Jonathan could have gotten away with hiking up the price of petrol without any severe repercussions on his tenure in office?
I can tell you that Thatcher's arrogance and contempt for the poor led to her demise in 1990 when she was humiliatingly forced out of office following the council tax riots which threatened to tear this country apart.
Foreign AffairsRe: Margaret Thatcher Is Dead by cap28: 2:13pm On Apr 08, 2013
Lets see if Cameron has the balls to give this woman a state funeral - I can't see the British people tolerating that.

It's just a pity she had to die twice - one in life and the other by her haters on news media... sad

R.I.P Maggi!! wink
Remember how her statue was decapitated? This is how much she is hated in this country:

On July 3, 2002, Paul Kelleher decapitated a £150,000, eight-foot (2.4 m), 1.8-tonne (2.0-short-ton), marble statue of the former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher on display at the Guildhall Art Gallery in central London.[1]
Having unsuccessfully swiped the statue with a Slazenger V600 cricket bat concealed in his trousers, Kelleher used a metal rope support stanchion to decapitate the statue.[1][2][3][4] After the beheading, he waited to be arrested by the police who arrived minutes later. He said on capture, "I think it looks better like that."[4]
The statue had been commissioned in 1998 from sculptor Neil Simmons by the House of Commons Speaker's Advisory Committee on Works of Art,[5] paid for by an anonymous donor and intended for a plinth among statues of former Prime Ministers in the Members' Lobby of the House. However, the House did not permit a statue to be erected there during its subject's lifetime, so the statue was temporarily accommodated in the Guildhall.[6] It was unveiled there by Thatcher in May 1998.[1][7] Following the loss of its head, it was removed from display. Although it was estimated that the work could be repaired for £10,000, statue experts worried that it would never be the same.[4]
At Kelleher's first trial, he said in his defence that the attack involved his "artistic expression and my right to interact with this broken world". The jury, despite nearly four hours of deliberation and a direction from the judge that it could decide by majority, failed to agree on whether or not he had "lawful excuse".[3] He was retried in January 2003, found guilty of criminal damage and sentenced to three months in jail.

anonimi: You should speak for yourself please.
She turned the British economy around by placing emphasis on productivity and entrepreneurship. Understandably the lazy loafers who are so dependent on government handouts would not like her.
Britain is much better for her administration and those with their heads properly screwed on their shoulders would wish she were PM now to take the drastic measures needed to revamp the economy that is now in doldrums again after many years of Labour handouts to lazy bums.
BTW, why don't you come to Nigeria where everyone is just sharing the Niger Delta oil wealth and producing next to nothing huh
RIP Margaret Thatcher, Iron Lady.
I knew it would be just a matter of time before ignorant sycophantic nigerian lap dogs would jump to this woman's defence - from your utterances i can see you do not understand anything about the UK - the miners that lost their jobs in northern england were they lazy loafers? the neutering of the unions, the mass unemployment, the deregulation and privatisation of the public sector which has led to off shoring of jobs and mass unemployment which we are still battling with in this country today - please do not speak about things you know nothing about.

adaobi123: The harsh comment was banter thing. Even though dying ain't a good thing.

Of course I know about this woman. My dad came to England during her time as prime minister and I know it was very hard for him and he just basically suffered.
To be honest she lived long and had a very comfortable life - i mean she is very fortunate to have lived till 87, many of her victims will never get the same chance, all the lives she destroyed, all the hopelessness and despair she caused...........

adaobi123: Ahhh ! So harsh
You dont know anything about this woman that's why you said that - she destroyed the livelihood of working class people in this country and encouraged selfishness, individualism and greed - the only beneficiaries of her draconian economic policies were the rich and the banking elite - she completely decimated jobs in the northern part of England and i can tell you that the average british person will not mourn her departure.

Former Prime Minister Baroness Thatcher has died at 87 following a stroke, her spokesman has said.

Lord Bell said: "It is with great sadness that Mark and Carol Thatcher announced that their mother Baroness Thatcher died peacefully following a stroke this morning."

Baroness Thatcher was Conservative prime minister from 1979 to 1990.

She was the first woman to hold the post. Her family is expected to make a further statement later.

RIP
Good riddance

bakynes: Red light your my main man we have d same kind of mentality I ve been telling pple arnd me to come out for a revolution in this country because I have lived abroad and am back now and they way we are living in dis country is 100 percent suffering I see ow d british govt takes care of their pple. The issue of religion even the british that brought christianity to us don't even go to churches like we do over here am just so fed up ow long do we keep folding our arms and let d leading class of dis country destroy d future of dis nation and the future of our kids unborn
The reason revolution will be very difficult to acheive in this country is because the british have used divide and conquer tactics to destroy us, ask yourself why the January 1966 Nzeogwu revolution did not work - Major Nzeogwu was a patriotic nigerian - born in the north of igbo origin but fluent in hausa - in fact he was more fluent in hausa than his native igbo, his fellow hausa officers regarded him as their brother but when push came to shove hausas were led to beleive that the january 1966 coup was an attempt by igbo officers to usurp power from the hausas who had been installed in the corridors of power by the british. The truth of the matter is that Nzeogwu was nigeria's version of Gamal Abdel Nasser - former and late president of egypt - Nasser was a former army colonel who led the Egyptian revolution of 1952 which succeeded in removing the pro british monarchy from power. Until nigerians find a selfless nationalist leader like Nzeogwu there is no hope for the future of nigeria.

Michaeljones36: Blacks are used to subjugation and slavery.

This is the truth.
so why did the black africans of Haiti emancipate themselves from slavery in 1804?

The Haitian Revolution (1791–1804) was a slave revolt in the French colony of Saint-Domingue, which culminated in the elimination of slavery there and the founding of the Haitian republic. The Haitian Revolution was the only slave revolt which led to the founding of a state. The revolution was one of the two successful attempts, along with the American Revolution, to achieve permanent independence from a European colonial power for an American state before the 19th century. Furthermore, it is generally considered the most successful slave rebellion ever to have occurred in the Americas and as a defining moment in the history of Africans in the New World.
Although an independent government was created in Haiti, its society continued to be deeply affected by the patterns established under French colonial rule. Because many planters had provided for their mixed-race children by African women by giving them education and (for men) training and entrée into the French military, the mulatto descendants became the elite in Haiti after the revolution. By the time of war, many had used their social capital to acquire wealth, and some already owned land. Some had identified more with the French colonists than the slaves.
Their domination of politics and economics after the revolution created another two-caste society, as most Haitians were rural subsistence farmers.[1] In addition, the nascent state's future was practically compromised when in the 1820s as it was forced to make massive reparations to French slaveholders in order to receive French recognition and end the nation's political and economic isolation.[2] These payments may have permanently affected Haiti's economy and wealth
