EndSARS: How report predicted ‘surging protests’ for Nigeria, others ravaged by COVID-19
The report had listed Nigeria among "the junk-bond countries predicted to contract a shrinking economy that will drive civil unrest and instability post COVID-19 period."

ByKabiru Yusuf October 21, 2020
A report published in July had predicted how Nigeria and other nations would experience civil unrest as a result of the coronavirus pandemic that has ravaged the globe since December 2019 when it first emerged in Wuhan, China.

Nigeria is currently battling with a civil unrest initiated by a protest against police brutality but which has since degenerated into violence and deaths.

The report had listed Nigeria among “the junk-bond countries predicted to contract a shrinking economy that will drive civil unrest and instability during the post COVID-19 period.”

An analysis published in the UK Guardian said the economic shock of the pandemic “coupled with existing grievances would cause widespread public uprisings globally”.

The piece, published July by the Guardian, said the “highest risk countries facing a perfect storm, where protests driven by the pandemic’s economic fallout are likely to inflame existing grievances, include Nigeria, Iran, Bangladesh, Algeria and Ethiopia.

“Thirty-seven countries, mainly in Africa and Latin America, could face unparalleled street protests for up to three years.”

Reality
A few months after that report, thousands of Nigerian youth took to the streets to express their grievances and to demand an end to police brutality and all related abuses nationwide.

The sustained protests across Nigeria and other parts of the world forced the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, to disband the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and replace it with a new unit, the Special Weapons and Tactics team (SWAT).

The piece published by the guardian, was a report of global risk firm, Verisk Maplecroft, warning third world countries of the post-COVID-19 economic realities.

According to the firm, “the total number of protests in developing countries has almost rebounded to pre-pandemic levels, as long-standing grievances over socioeconomic inequalities, civil and political rights, and government corruption have resurfaced”.

Many countries are still in lockdown, a principal analyst of the firm had said adding that the full economic shock of the outbreak is yet to be felt.

Against this background, he predicted the number of protests are expected to surge “over the next 2–3 months, a timespan that coincides with the beginning of Nigeria’s #EndSARS protests.

“We can see that as the lockdown started the vast majority of the protests were covid related. We had food protests in Manila and protests in Bangladesh over the garment industries.

“At least 166 people died during violent demonstrations in Ethiopia in recent weeks, following the murder of a popular singer, Haacaaluu Hundeessaa, a member of the Oromo ethnic group, and a leading voice in anti-government protests. Public uprisings have also been seen in Manila, the Philippines, over food shortages and in Bangladesh among garment workers facing unpaid wages after the cancellation of billions of dollars of clothing orders,” he had said

In 2019, Verisk Maplecroft had recorded 47 countries with a significant uptick in protests, including Hong Kong, Chile, Nigeria, Sudan and Haiti. It predicted more turmoil in 2020.

In sub-Saharan Africa, Verisk Maplecroft “expected the risk of protests to intensify amid economic decline, poverty, and inability to guarantee adequate food supplies”. In Latin America, Venezuela is ranked as being at greatest risk of unrest.

#EndSARS
The movement, which first began late 2017, erupted in fresh protests this month over the reported killing of a man by police Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) operatives.

The animosity towards the police unit continued with protesters demanding an end to the menace of police brutality and harassment of youth.

The federal government bowed to the pressure by disbanding the notorious police unit and replacing it with a new unit, the special weapons and tactics (SWAT).

Over 20 people have been killed since the start of protests while properties destroyed. On Tuesday night, soldiers deployed to enforce a ban on protests in Lagos, opened fire on unarmed protesters at the Lekki toll gate, killing many of them. The army has denied the allegation.

On Tuesday evening, the peaceful protests were hijacked by hoodlums which led to jailbreaks at two Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) centres and the burning of police stations.

The murdered protestors did not harm anyone, that's the pain. And we are all witnessing the consequences of years of "what can you do?" Syndrome of our leadership.
People involved will pay for it. I do not know how. They never thought of consequences. Not business as usual due to globalization.
To prevent further lost of lives. FG/SG should ask security agents to stop shooting at unarmed people immediately.
Let protesters dissipate their energy . Of course properties will be destroyed. Lives are more important than properties.
Meet youth demands. I think government is not ready to meet youth demands with shooting of innocent ones in lekki. It is massacre.Just promises.

Why did government fall into this mess? Govt should know that there's anger in the land. The right thing to do is to keep talking and begging the youth.

We are angry! The government over the years have spite on God's face by the way they are handling the affairs of this nation.

Only wisdom will solve this problem.

Did you define yourselves or those eligible to join the protest?
Was it not you calling everybody to join the struggle?

Hoodlums, who are also Nigerians with grievances now joined, and you said they hijacked it. What is hijack?
Did they stop you from doing your own protest?
Did they redefine what you want or change the 5 abi 17 points agenda?
Part of your own agenda is to release your own fellow protesters arrested.
Part of their own agenda is to release their friends that were in prison since (they also thought they were wrongly imprisoned, or no be only them be thieves).
You had no leader, fixed group or coordination, and you called everybody to join you. Hoodlums now joined you, and you said they hijacked it from you.

Please stop the joke.

Let's even assume they've seized control of your own protest, you cannot take back control from ordinary hoodlums, and you want to take control of Nigeria from Buhari and the army? Are you dreaming?

I've just been watching Channels TV and TVC News, and Arise News, and the ''journalists'' are complaining about soldiers shooting ''peaceful protesters'' even as they are showing the ''peaceful protesters'' burning cars, destroying public facilities, and setting buildings ablaze across Lekki this morning.

Channels TV interviewed some of the ''peaceful protesters'' as they were destroying the facilities, and one of them who could barely speak English said they were ''angry'', and that that was why they were burning peoples' cars in their compounds and company cars in company/bank premises.

In another broadcast by Arise News, they reported that ''peaceful protesters'' had released nearly 2000 prisoners from jail in Benin.

They didn't bother explaining the paradox of such a stupid statement.

The reporting of these ''journalists'' did not contain a single condemnation of these ''peaceful protesters'' causing mayhem and anarchy, and they reserved all their condemnation for the police.

The ''journalists'' even had the nerve to go round Lekki showing ''peaceful EndSars protesters'' destroying properties in areas where there was no police or law enforcement present, and they never condemned their actions, simply reporting them and showing us the destructive acts on live TV.

ARE THE NIGERIAN MEDIA FUELLING THIS CHAOS?

I THINK THEY ARE, AND THAT IS CONDEMNABLE.

A PROPER MEDIA would call for protesters to respect the curfew imposed, and condemn their destruction of public and private properties, in addition to condemning police shootings.
When americans were protesting blacklivesmatter, and they were destroying properties , how many people did security agents kill? Did they use live ammunition? Do you know the meaning of rules of engagement?
How would you react if someone slap you repeatedly for stepping on him ?

Neddstark:
Fellow Nigerians. Since the Endsars protests became a blockade, I have been concerned. Not that it is not good for the nation, but like Segalink said, it became a kind of youth insurrection against the government. My fear was the total breakdown in law and order. The youth feeling that we have got our government felt they now have power felt they could not be moved. The eventuality was that dispersing the blockades was going to involve the use of force.
As usual in Nigeria, this so-called peaceful protests began getting violent. The negative youths that were invited to join the movement started using violence against the police as seen in Edo and some parts of the SW. The government on their own used available touts to counter the protests but this failed. I knew force was oncoming. There was no way about it. It was going to get worse as usual in Nigeria. Our overdo on the government angle and youths side was going to make things go very awful.
Now with the insensitive wicked killings at the Lekki tollgate, everyone is angry. People want the presidency gone. Youths want to fight the government, tensions are flaring. Influencers are inciting. But before it gets worse, I will like to warn you all of the reality in the next weeks and months to come the way it is going.

1. There will be total breakdown in law and order. Thieves will rob, rapists will rape, cultists will kill, arsonist will burn and nothing will happen.
2. There will be no international intervention in months. Please do not let anyone deceive you that UN has a right to come into a country after 30 days of unrest. Why hasn't UN invaded Iran. Nigeria is a sovereign nation with a democratically elected president. Nothing will happen. Even if UN comes in next 3-4 months, which army is coming? Is it Ecowas that is run by Nigeria or US army that has its major responsibilities right now or the UK that didnt interfere in 3 years of our civil war? Think people. We will be the ones to suffer it.
3. There is going to be hunger. 60% of food in Nigeria comes from the North. A shortage of this will make millions hungry and food expensive. You that is inciting more violence, hope you can deal with hunger when it comes to you and your family.
4. There will be an ethnic battle. Soon the southern youths will be killing northerners in the south and the animalistic northerners will do worse. We will fight an ethnic war we do not need.
5. There will be extreme poverty. With no work, no industries working, foreign investors back in their country, we are in for it. Only charitable organizations will send aid to us. And if China comes in, they will be doing so to save the day and finally own their biggest African franchise.
6. There will be war. Yes war. You think war is a joke. Maybe you should ask older men from the East who fought the Biafran war. Also this is Africa, there will be mass civilian casualties. Innocent men, Women, children will go down for a needless battle. Stray and projectile bullets will have a field day in our overpopulated country. Get ready to hear of tragedies of your friends and loved ones anytime. Be careful what you ask for Libya 10 years later is wishing the peaceful days under Muammar Ghadaffi was still here. Our touts will have guns. There will be warlords. More prisoners will be let open. Criminal gangs will rule over you.

These are just a few I compiled. I know some people will come here and curse. However, the choice is yours. Let us just know what we are asking for. Lets give peace a chance because when shit hits the roof. We are in for it. Liberia has not recovered till now. Oil that is losing value will not save the economy. 2023 is around the corner, we know better who to vote for. With the youth force, we can make lot of impact. God bless Nigeria.
There would not be war in Nigeria.War in Nigeria will destabilise Africa and to some extent world.
Pockets of prolonged protests lasting for months or regime change. I do not know how. FG is not smart.

Am surprized that even so called educated elites and educated people are taking the issue lightly. Knowing fully well the reasons behind the curfew.People in defiance of the curfew still converged in lekki and other places to protest and cause mayhem after the curfew was issued.Other states have since declared same ,states like Edo with the related incidents of criminality that occured in Lagos. So i wonder why there is a hue and cry over govt action in that regard. No govt in the world would tolerate such spate of criminality going on in the guise of protests.Even in the most democratic nation of the world the POTUS Trump had to call in the US Military and all federal agents to border patrol, customs and secret service agents to restore order on the streets when the protest against same police brutality was apparently going out of hand.Am also surprized that educate people can be murshroomed to believe the UN would intervene after 31 days.Even with the elementary government of my secondary schools days that is impossible. We are deceiving ourselves here in Nigeria with all these conspiracy theories citing different parts of the world were protest lead to revolution this and that. The protesters did not block passage of innocent people, there was a particular clip of people protesting and making way for emergency vehicles, the protesters did not start partying and cooking on the roads, they did not start burning police stations, they did not break jails are free harded criminals back to the society and all sorts of nonsence going on in the guise of agitations.Sadly the purpose of the so called protests have been clearly defeated. As the govt would have to employ high handleness to restore law and order as we saw in Lekki. The govt has all right to employ it full weight on any citizien that refuses to obey the curfew. You can see in Egypt ENDSARS protesters were arrested, the govt has its own laws there concerning protests. they are not to be taken for granted. These so called ENDSARS leaders have since melted into the thin air leaving a trail of destruction. What they started that did not end well. For now based on the criminality that unfolded and curfew issued we just have to stand back and obey the govt ,so sanity can be restored. With the criminal released back to the society the likes of these that raped and killed Uwa the situation is dicey. As it would take another concerted effort to recapture them back.IF there is no police (good or bad) on ground in any society great anarchy would reign time in Brazil when the police went on strike. The crime rate soared to unprecedented heights ever imagined. For the first time ever the govt took proactive action to disband the unit. It was created then to respond to violent crimes mostly arm robbery that sprung up which conventional police could not hand. it was the same Nigerians to rose up with the upsurge in armed robbery. the Unit performed well initially but later became rogue. With the govt banning SARS based on the level of protests. The so called protesters still continued foolishly to protesting and that was then all hell broke loose. And now resulted to this. All these that were killed died in vain that is Nigeria for you. it is in the holy scriptures that a little rat alive has far more value than a mighty dead Lion.Let us give the government a chance and see what would come out of their pledge. We would have all might and cause to justify propounded action if nothing tangible happens. The Nigerian Police sure have learnt some great lessons they can never forget and never would have imagined that their deeds be given so much attention. God bless Nigeria.Go On With One Nigeriaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.
Curfew 9pm, massacre 7pm. Do you think it is appropriate to use live ammunition on protesters because of curfew in the dark?

We have been fighting them as a Nation for 11 years and Buhari has not been President all through this time.

Also remember that the Niger Delta militants that have gone into the Amnesty programme or are in hiding can also easily come out to take over Oil facilities as you "End Nigeria" without a leadership.

Am I saying you should stop protesting? No oh, Yoruba people say you can only wake someone that is asleep up, not someone that is pretending to be sleeping. I know your protest is not done with sincerity so why will I appeal to you to stop it? As long as they are still playing music, as long as there are still girls to exchange number with, as long as you can snap yourself and post on social, as long as you can use it to show off, and as long as you do not have enough sense and sincerity to know that problems are solved painstakingly not with quick fix, I really don't think anything outside these can stop you.

I am just documenting this your "struggle" so that when we all begin to suffer the real suffering we will be able to remember how it started. So that you don't change the story.

For documentation purpose here are SOME of the things the government has done yet you insist on shutting down the country,

1. Ban SARS patrol

2. Supported the protest as the right of the protesters

3. Arrested some of the Police men who harrass protesters.

4. Set up a Presidential Panel that has now indicted tens of SARS operatives and recommended others for dismissal.

5. Ban SARS.

6. Set up a replacement for SARS and invited celebrities to their training to ensure everything is done well.

7. Promised that no SARS operative will be among the new team.

8. Began the process of putting SARS operatives through medical test.

9. Met with stakeholders and civil society on how they can monitor all the promises being made.

10. Released arrested protesters with warning to Policemen to allow protesters protest.

11. The President gave a National address, the IGP gave a live press conference and have aired several meetings with leaders of the youths.

12. Setting up of Judicial Panel of Inquiry in all 36 States with PUBLIC HEARINGS!

13. Each State has been ordered to set up a Victim Support Fund to be funded by the Federal Government to compensate families of victims.

And this list is by no means exhaustive. But nothing will take you off the streets if there is music, beer and women.
And that means they should shoot at unarmed young people at night? That is senseless killing
