The books I recommend to medical students are often looked down upon. They are indeed risk adventures. Most medical students I recommend books to end up not using them. Why? Because they're not the usual books. Medical students are used to the books generations ahead of them used and prefer spending long grueling hours on huge endless textbooks. To some of them, that's the drill.
But one girl attempted to use of of the books I recommended in her Pathology exam. Her classmates were studying Almighty Robbins and Cortran Pathologic Basis of Disease. I told her not to use it. My reason: the book was too detailed and time wasting. I offered her a trio of Pathology Secrets+Pathguy.com+Some lecture notes I emailed her. The results was out last week- she topped the class with a distinction mark. They still think she's a genius.
Happy weekend. pls did u use srb for surgery. i'm loving the series but I just feel it's a big risk to just do away with Badoe and Bailey/Love. |

My recent prakas with base1 is an obvious proof that he's a bundled thief... In all my dealings it's hard for me to complain about any of them here; but this one is just way too much... Or don't u know time is money and dat can also affect d trust my customers with all d plenty lies one needs to tell to give excuse. Ur clients do nt hv any choice than to b patient. I think it was honourable of them to admit to having problems publicly. I also think it is wise that they've suspended operations to be able to tackle the issues. I don't know whether they've told "plenty lies" as I'm not their customer, but what I see here is good damage control. |

lomaxx: The 2006 set in my school just finished housemanship with all the strikes. 2007 set were inducted 4 months ago.
And in my opinion, they overstayed. So EBSU's case was on the extreme given the accreditation suspension.
I am an obvious victim of strikes in Nigerian University. When I began 400 level in August 2012, our Faculty slated our date of graduation for May 2015. But between then and now we've had an 8 month ASUU strike, a 2 month NMA strike which will prolong the calendar by almost a year.
I believe there is a management insensitivity in the administration of most Colleges of Medicine in this regard. We can't keep spending 8 to 10 years in school to study a 6 year course on the flippant excuse of strikes. When it comes to strikes, other students in other departments are barely affected - unless the strike is very long. In my school, the VC cut short all holidays to 2 weeks. What is the result of that? Folks that were admitted with me on 4-year courses have been shortlisted for nysc, those on 5 year courses are rounding up. And my brother that was admitted into the Faculty of Engineering when I was in 400 will be graduating with me.
My point is other departments have a way of getting their academic calendar back on track despite the strikes- but not medicine. We don't run semesters. We run stretches of sessions without holidays and our sessions lasts from 13 - 15 months on the average (18 months for preclinicals). So these strikes shouldn't be affecting us. There should be some kind of waiver. Or they should come up with strategies to avoid involvement in these strikes.
I have to mention that CMUL has made so much progress in this regard. I have friends in cmul. Between my 400 and 500, my 200l friends in cmul then are now in 400l. And all of us have had the same strikes. We keep spending 8 years in school and soon some people will get tired. The motivation factor is very important. Besides, there's more to life than spending endless years in med school. Well in my school, U06 haven't gone halfway into housemanship and U07 just started 600 about a month ago. |
Education › Re: The medical students and aspirants thread by Chartey(m): 6:57am On Oct 11, 2014 |
ebsuguy: Yes,they spent eight years because the school` accreditation was suspended, but the suspension have been lifted. The 8 years is almost normal now. Without strikes, medicine is 7 yrs in most schools na. If you come add all these strikes join e go enta 8 yrs. |

shikharDubey: Hello Doctors, Want to get money by referring patients to India? Just refer any patient to India, we recieve that patient and get him admitted to the hospital like Fortis, Escorts, Primus and many more. You will get a 10% referral amount of the total cost occurred in treatment. Suppose you refer any patient to India and his total treatment cost is $5000, then you will get $500 for this at the instance. It's just a simple philosophy and you can also earn something by just referring relevant patients. Mail me at shikhar.db@gmail.com for further questions. Wickedness! sisiafrika: C u people just stop this admission and career talks? Whatever happened to pharmacology, physiology, biochemistry talks and brainstorming? Nonsense! What's the different between potency and efficacy as used in pharmacology? Are all Neurotramsitters drugs? What of the vice versa? Hehehe Sisiafrika. You are right, but what is more right is to talk about career and admission. You can always get your 'stuff' from your textbooks, but you may not get some of the info here anywhere else. You may get career info here that nobody in your class has heard about. It's these little bits of knowledge that give people the edge over others. |

No wonder most graduate are not employable There are a lot of things that go into making a first class graduate. Sleeksylvia: Wow! I enjoyed reading tru dis thread. I've always wanted 2 be a doctor. I wrote Jamb 4 times. 3 of my results were witheld .finally, I got admission 2 read Animal n environmental Biology. I graduated since 2009 wit a 2.1. I'm done wit nysc sincee 2011. Been looking 4 a job and confused abt wat 2 do in Msc. I applied 4 direct entry in2 uniben 4 medicine. Just wrote d exam last week. I'm 28 n want 2 get married b4 or while in sch. Wit all I hav been reading abt stress in med sch, difficulty in getting a placement 4 housemanship, USMLE, Primaries etc; I got a bit scared 2 be frank. But I'm not deterred cos I believe wit God by my side, I will live my dream. Lest I forget, I started feeling faint at d sight of blood at some point but I'm controlling it now. Hope I will get ova dat? I wanted 2 be a surgeon but I'm afraid I will go 4 medicine dependin on if I get ova it. Pls I need comments from my big brothers and sister and senior colleagues telling me d realities of d journey of being a successful medical doctor. Thanks in anticipation of ur comments Please can I say something as your small bros? First of all, forget about whether you'll want to be a physician or surgeon first, it's a decision for later. Forget about the fainting at the sight of blood, it's an intangible. If you're sure you want to do medicine, you can do it as a married woman (I know people doing it). You'll however need a sponsor as you won't be able to work and get money. You'll also need to start before getting married as your husband may be able to talk you out of doing it. It's difficult giving this kind of advice online as I don't know you and I feel your personality will determine how well you cope in your particular situation. If medicine is what you really want to do at this point in your life, then go ahead without fear sister. I hope you find some little wisdom in the words of a child. |
