My grandmother was from a well known family in what is now Ndokwa East and she was a proud Igbo woman- is her opinion less relevant than yours? Likewise, my people are more related to some of the Enuani speaking communities than some Ika communities are, does that give me the right to speak for them more than an Ika person?

Igbo is an ancient language... Spoken in almost the same form since 1000BC, even the name Igbo itself means "ancient".
Its rare to find languages these days whose origins are from the 10th century BC and even if you find they're dead languages eg Sanskrit and Geez.
If we can reach out to blacks of the Caribbean, within half a century they'd be totally Igbonized.
Shoutout to all proud speakers of Igbo!! cool

What you know now as IGBOS is the coming together of two people. 1st is the aboriginals called ADAMAs who were bantus and migrated into Nigeria where they settled at Okigwe/Uturu axis, the second people are the ERI Migration from Israel, they fled during the islamic conquest of North Africa/Middle East, Israel tribes were scattered, Lemba people of Ethiopia have the israeli link.
Eri migration into West of Alkebula(now Africa) had them settled at North of Igboland via Omambala River.
The coming together, intermarriage, intertrading, Socialisation etc btw Eri and Adama gave rise to early Igbo settlements.
I will open a thread on this with history resources.

I couldn't help but smile at his childish mishieves.

On our own side, I think it's high time we promote the Igbo culture, pride, oneness and greatness.
We should uphold our values of intelligence, hard work. Let's distinguish ourselves wherever we go.
Let's stand for our great sons and kick against any element of falsehood in our society. Criminal elements desecrating the name and what we stand for should be kicked and disgraced so generations coming up can live up to a great value and legacy.

Then and only then will we continue to gain our respect. Our language will flourish and our names be mentioned always for the right reasons. Then the deniers amongst us will beg and crave to identify with our greatness. Even people with the slightest connection with us will deny theirs and embrace our identity
.

Imagine Igboland was like America or Europe, and Nigeria still Nigeria, these fake elements amongst us will naturalise by default.
We all have a role to play.
Exactly
That's what am working...making our people more proud of their heritage, from igbanke in the West to isobo in the East.. All Igbos
Right now am working on some projects especially as regards Igbo language....something like producing standard Igbo language Bibles, producing atlases in Igbo language, producing a comprehensive Igbo vocabulary with at least up to 100000 entries.. Guy its not easy

Concerning maps...the most popular Igbo map flying about on NL is what I asked ezeagu, a fellow Anioma from agbor to do for me. Now this map is one of the most popular Igbo maps you can get..he did both of them and am proud am among the crew that are changing the narrative.
The second one has already been adopted by Niger Delta proponents for use in advancing their case

Learning Igbo isn't difficult if you're determined... Its a language spoken by 40million people worldwide and its sentences are in a Subject-Verb-Object(SVO) order.
Get yourself a Igbo dictionary/vocabulary... Or if you want I can send it across to you, it'd be very helpful to you in getting started.

Bini migrants like you living in Ika land is the problem, but, you know what, a fruit doesn't fall too far from its tree. Most Ika are coming back to their senses. Today, 100% Ika families give their children Igbo names and speak the Enuani dialects which is the most spoken lect in Anioma, thereby, making the journey back to their roots, the Igbo root. Soon, those inconsequential few like you will be erased and forgotten. The Igbo nation will swallow you up and there isn't a danm thing you can do about it. Nature will manifest its full course. Yes it's a beautiful River. I think the place is called Uruakwu or so(not sure) in Abia. That place will be good for a River Port because it's linked directly to Bonny on the Atlantic in Rivers State.

PoliticsRe: If Mid-west Region Hadn't Been Created, Awolowo Would Have Seceded by cheruv: 1:09am On Mar 12, 2017
ImperialYoruba:
[s]Go and look at Western region economy in 1957, compare with 1963 (when Midwest was carved out), compared with 1966 when you carried out coup and 1967 when you rebeled, compared with 1970,compare with now.

The West has gained incrementaly every decade since 1957. Midwest or no Midwest we have triumphed

In contrast, the Midwest creation was the handiwork of Igbos, championed by Okpara and Osadebay. Oba of Bini allowed Ibos to convince him that Yoruba was his enemy and asked if he would rally the Edos, the Urhobos, Isokos and others to join the cause and sign a referendum.

The referendum passed and Azikiwe issued a gazette creating Midwestern Region. Edo is the majority ethnicity in the region, but in a twist, Dennis Osadebay, an Anioma Ibo, a minority, became Premier of the new region and elevated the Ibos of Midwest as power brokers. The Oba of Bini was not pleased but nothing he could do to change the outcome and the betrayal. He mounted opposition and protested the treatment of his people, the majority, under the brazen show of political arrogance by Ibo.

January of 1966 brought in military power and Osadebay was removed. When Ojukwu declared Biafra he had three flags, one for Igboland,a second one for the Eastern minorities and a third for Midwest, all are under the command and rulership of Biafra with headquarters at Enugu. The Biafran soldiers that marched into Benin were taunting the locals and warning them to begin taking lessons in Igbo language because that is their new linguafranca.

You yanminri did worse to Edos and Midwest generally than anybody from West would ever do to them. Our legacy in Midwest are still visible, all the way to Delta region where free education, health and trade boards were setup to educate, improve sanitary and health conditions and help farmers with cooperatives and scaled income.

What is Biafran legacy to Midwest? Tears, agony and ruin. The people of old Midwest are where they are now because of what you did to them and not because of what West did to them. If Oba of Bini had not followed you foolishly and led his people out of West they would be under the corporate umbrella of Odua Investment Corporation today and share in the fortunes of the richest and greatest indigenous corporation in Nigeria. In factbthey will also be under DAWN and enjoy the integration of economies and security in Odualand.

Talk about betrayers, revisit and understand how you people betrayed Edos[/s].

CultureRe: Delta (and Rivers) Igbos by cheruv: 9:44pm On Mar 11, 2017
ChinenyeN:
Not really. All of the three speech forms you mentioned are just as much "innovated" from proto-Igbo as say, the Isu lects. The roles that each play are no more significant than the other. The sheer amount of dialectal diversity and innovation balances each other out. For example, in context of proto-Igbo, linguistic studies seem to favor an older p sound in place of the f, h, y that exists today.

Take the word for "thing" for example (Izugbe: ihe).

If one follows the linguistic favoring for an ancient p -> f -> v -> h -> y, one would get the following generalized innovations:
iphe (Northeastern Igbo)
ife, ibve (Northern/Western Igbo)
ive, ife (Eastern Igbo)
ihe, ihye, ihwe (Central/Southern Igbo)
iye (Ekpeye)

From the above, it can be ascertained that the Northeastern region likely retains the much more older aspects of the word for "thing", and Ekpeye has the most recent innovation weakening that /p/ sound all the way to a /y/. The Northern and Eastern Igbo-speaking regions seem to retain an aspect closer to proto-Igbo than the Central and Southern Igbo-speaking regions. Looking at the distribution, Ika also falls in with the Central/Southern Igbo-speaking regions. So, Ika also has innovated and their word for "thing" is farther from proto-Igbo than the Eastern Igbo usages.

If one follows another linguistic favoring for an ancient l -> n, one would get the following generalized innovations:
ele, eli (Ekpeye and parts of Ikwerre)
ala, ali (Central, Southern, Northeastern, Eastern Igbo)
ana, ani (Northern, Western Igbo)

From the above, it can be ascertained that Ekpeye likely retains the much older aspect of the word for "ground" and the Northern and Western Igbo-speaking region has the most recent innovations, weakening the /l/ sound to an /n/. In this context, they are the farthest away from the proto-Igbo form. Looking at the distribution, Ika yet again falls in with the Central/Southern Igbo-speaking region, showing that it too has innovated farther away from proto-Igbo than other speech forms in the Igbo language family.

What you may perceive as a big role for Ekpeye, Ika and Izii, is actually not a big role at all. They are just as innovated as any other Igbo speech form that survived to modern day. As a case in point, Ekpeye (which some would like to think of as the older speech form) is practically devoid of nasal consonants and vowels, much like the generalized Northern Igbo speech form. In this respect, Ekpeye has lost a major component of proto-Igbo speech which was retained primarily by Southern, Central, Eastern, some Northeastern and Ika. This puts Ekpeye's innovation farther away from proto-Igbo than other speech forms.

So, you see, the innovations balance themselves out, and this is possible due to the extreme dialectal diversity that exists. Not a single speech form today is "closer" to proto-Igbo than any of the others. They are all equally far away.
Thanks for the lecture...that doc you posted sometime ago was quite useful to me as regards the project am currently running

Your eastern Igbo dialects usually throws up surprises...

Can you help me do something... Look for an Izii dictionary for me,especially one in e format or if not possible an Izii wordlist. It'd be very helpful

Concerning the bold...the current ones suit perfectly into the type of vocabulary am planning to use
Yesterday = Unya [VCV]
Today = Taa [CV]
Tomorrow = Echi [VCV]

I need terms not having more than two syllables that's something like VCV or CV not CVCV or VCVCV.

On a side note, is there any other igbo dialectal term for language aside asusu ?

Somehow, by virtue of its location or distance on the extreme fringe of the Igbo-speaking area, this was possibly the reason it was able to retain archaic Igbo words here and there, and for some reason it didn't experience the flow of linguistic modernism the 'general' Igbo experienced.
Yes...
Currently am working on an Igbo wordlist...which I intend to use to write an Igbo bible whose language would be contemporary and also use that same wordlist to produce an Igbo/Chinese dictionary or should I say use of hanzi for writing Igbo language..
A document chinenyen posted here about proto-igbo and various Igbo dialect comparisons has been extremely helpful... Like seriously
For an example it has helped me find out shorter names for stuffs which in general Igbo are long or sort of repetitive eg
1]center which is "etiti" in general Igbo is called "echì" among the Izì
2]rainbow which is "egwurugwu" in general Igbo is called "èvù" among the eza or mgbo(can't remember the particular tribe in Ebonyi)

Ika, Ækpæyæ and Izii have a big role to play in reconnecting modern Igbo to its past and it'd be good if our linguists take note of that.

There being a similar translation of his name no matter how similar the two translation are is inconsequential. I've seen someone explain how Bini and Igbo languages are similar in some aspects. But why are you guys fund of dissecting any word you come across to make it Igbo? From Omojie to Dein to Mgba. These words don't have any relationship with the Igbo Meaning you give to them.

PoliticsRe: IPOB- Right Ideology But Wrong Methodology! by cheruv: 1:50pm On Mar 11, 2017
Amarabae:
Greetings!
I want to contribute to the ongoing Ipob issue, I think that Nairaland is a good platform to do that.
IPOB have succeded in enshring their biafran ideology into the DNA of their core fellowers, thats why you can hear some of them saying BIAFRA OR DEATH.
I have asked myself, is anything wrong with Ipob ideology of self independence, and the answer is NO!
But there is a problem, which is their Methodology!
And we will discuss this under three scope,
1. SOUTH SOUTH MINORITES
2. PROTESTS
3. IGBO NATION.

SOUTH SOUTH MINORITES: Just as Ipob feel that they have the right to decide on what they want,is the same way,the SS minorities also have the right to make their decisions.
and on the issue of Biafra, They have said NO to the agitation.
using Eastern region as a bait to force anyone into an unwanted agitation is certainly silly.
present day Delta and Edo were part of western nigeria with the yorubas, yet anytime Oduduwa voice goes out, they restrict it to 6 southwest states and the yoruba speaking areas of kogi and kwara.
The eastern region is gone, if the Ijaws,Ogonis,Efiks etc don't want Biafra, their decision should be respected and not abused.
I see them as Igbo neighbours and thats where it ends!
Ipobs attaching these minorities to Biafra agitation is WRONGLY portraying Igbos as beggers! Thats why you see some of these SS minorities insulting Igbos on Social Media.
IPOB caused it.
Asari dokubo supporting Biafra means nothing, and There will NEVER be any refrendum on the Land of these SS minorities because they never asked for any.
IPOB should respect their decision.

2) PROTESTS: Since nnamdi kanu was arrested, ther have been many protests calling for his release, but has that released Nnamdi Kanu? NO.
Instead we have been seeing some Igbo young men send to their graves by the trigger happy Nigeria army.
my people, This is Africa where human rights are not respected, so why exposing yourselves to danger in the name of protest?
Since you people have been shot at in protest rally, is there any justice yet?
This is a country where gunfire were open on hundreds of shittes and nothing happens.
why must you present yourself to the enemy for you to be shot in the name of protest.
It is not the strongest animal that survives the jungle but the wiseast
Diplomacy is not in the Africa DNA!
3) IGBO NATION: why not agitate for an Igbo nation? European countries are succeding because they are mainly homogenous, why trying to leave Nigeria to another heterogenous country,
Had it been Ojukwu took the Igbos alone in 1967,he would have succeded.
if incase Nigeria breaks,I will love a homogenous Igbo country with Igbo language as lingua franca and also teaching our children Art,Science and Technology in Igbo language.
Thats the secret of western world dominance in Technology, A Homogenous nation.
I will round up by saying that BUHARI SHOULD RELEASE NNAMDI KANU.

No insults pls, contribute maturely.
thanks.…
You are free to share.
Amarachi.
Exactly!!
I also want an Igbo nation or should I call it empire bkos it'd be comprised of clans/tribes who are of different strengths from the ika in the west to the isobo in the east, from the obolos in the north to the ubani in the south
