hisenjos: Just got this Chevrolet Volt battery in. 16kwh total running at 360v. Very heavy unit -over 200kg Going to break it down to 48v and 24v units to use. Will try and post pictures when it is done. Awesome acquisition. Be very careful the inverter you use with these batteries. The maximum charge voltage is 24.5 to 25V. don't exceed that |

Ativ: I remember you mentioned that the installation would be 3-phase. Does that entail the use of 3 units of Victron Quattro? Will the idle usage of each of the Inverters add up in such a setup? What are the advantages of a 3-phase installation?
Are there 24V lithium batteries from leading lithium providers like BYD? The customer has 3 phase pumps and AC. Yes three individual Victron Quattro. Idle usage? I did not understand the question sorry. Advantage - I can power three phase appliances 24V from top manufacturers? I have not seen them yet. Victron and SAFT has 24V modules and some of the smaller folks (Relion) will custom build batteries for you in addition to the 12 24 and 48V offerings that they have. Thank you for reading and your questions |

I have had experiences with 1 and 2. They give a good warranty. They are also running obsolete firmware from the original manufacturer. Weaknesses: the blow up if PV is connected and you interrupt the connection to the batteries. The do tend to hunt or sweep more frequently than the originals. Pluses: You can manage battery settings and voltage. They give you a log of your production for up to 120 days (FM). |

now u can run your air-conditioner without too much of voltage lag u can drain to about 3v per cell, meaning u get more on a full discharge compared to lead acid, lead acid can never allow or u kill it
the best thing for us in nigeria is the li-ion does not like to be fully charged(does not like to remain in fully charged status)
pls let us know about ur progres
is that not 2 x 24 telsa bat, cause above u mentioned 48v We intend to do a three phase to power his central AC. He has paid for additional batteries. The tesla 2 x 24 come from the Model S. These were built by Tesla for Mercedes and Smart. They were used in the Electric Vehicle that won its category in the Paris Dakar. They are 48V modules. I will not drain down to 3. Maybe 3.3 to 3.4 and max may be 4 on the charge side. And you are absolutely correct. They don't need to be fully charged. They don't like complete discharges either. Keep them in 85 to 90 % range and you are good. |

one of the best battery available....
may i ask some questions?
1. how do u plan to balance the battery pack?
2. what inveter are u using it on?
i have been working with 18650's for a while now.
thanks Thank you sir. 1. I am waiting for a batrium BMS. Till it comes we will limit the max charge and discharge to between .5 and 1 V above the max discharge and one volt below the max charge. 2. Victron Quattro I salute people who will work with individual 18650 cells. I lack the patience or ability to do what you do. I have not used their product. I should consider them too. Thank you for sharing NiyiOmoIyunade: MY SUPER WONDERFUL CUSTOMER SERVICE EXPERIENCE WITH MORNINGSTAR CORPORATION
I have two MorningStar 60a MPPT CCs which regulate the DC electricity that runs my entire house - the older of the two CCs intermittently throws a fault <DIP SWITCH CHANGED> due to some software error apparently but otherwise functions well and enters absorb and float normally.
Two years after I purchased this CC from an Amazon seller, I raised a support ticket with MorningStar Corp directly about the error I regularly saw logged on the CC - we worked through troubleshooting steps together and without any push or threat or force on my part, MorningStar already sent me a brand new MorningStar MPPT 60a as replacement CC entirely free of charge - bear in mind I did not purchase the CC directly from them o! They did not ask me for proof of purchase, they did not imply that I had somehow caused the fault, they simply determined that there was an issue with a product under their global 5 year warranty and immediately shipped a replacement out to me once I provided them the serial number of the product for their records
I was so humbled and grateful I told them to ship to my US address so that they would not have to bear the costs to ship to Nigeria - they were actually willing to ship it to me here.
This sets the standard for what a customer should expect from sellers and manufacturers when he buys from them and that way the customer can buy with confidence. MorningStar have made a customer for life with me.
See below juicy titbits from my engagement with MorningStar support. |

GeorgeD1: hello niyi, pranil, chris81964, dmerciful, et al,
now flip this around and lets do the maths for traditional lead-acid agm batteries. again, i want to build a bank of 780ah batteries and i decide to visit yet another popular solar website. i get trojan solar agm battery 12v 205ah for about 185k each. i would need at least 16 units to reach my bank size goal. adding up at 48v this translates to a total 820ah. which is 39.360kwh (playing up the lithium trick) and at a cost of 2.96million. at a glance this is less than one-fifth of the cost for lithium with a significantly higher storage.
from a purely economic view point, it wouldn't make sense for me to ditch traditional lead-acid in favour of lithium when i can get more for less. besides the phantom dod cycles, its lighter weight plus the fact that you can bypass the usual bulk-absorb-float stages, what other features does lithium has going in its favor to justify such humongous investment? The Simpliphi battery is an anomaly. You can find batteries that cost substantially less. The BYD might be the best bang for the buck. Advantages 1. I don't need to oversize. 2. I don't need to Eq 3. No need to fully charge daily or any other time 4. 90% recharge within 90 minutes 5. No smells 6. No maintenance 7. Can use up to 90% of battery capacity 8. Cycle life up to 20 x better 9. Smaller space I can go on and on |

NiyiOmoIyunade: Oga Chris.
Congrats on this new milestone.
I wanted to clarify that each battery is nominal 48v? How many cells in series are set to make up this 48v nominal? And what is the nominal voltage of the individual cells that are connected in series to make up one complete 48v battery?
They are EV batteries salvaged from a crashed or totaled EV. And the module was removed from the car how I got it. There are a total of 330 cells Voltage nominal: 3.8V/Cell, 57.0V/Module Charge voltage cut-off: 4.2V/Cell, 63.0V/Module Discharging cut-off: 3.3V/Cell, 50V/Module
Second is shipping fees - Oga Pranil once mentioned that Lithium batteries are classified as HazMat - what is the cost profile looking like to get these across to Nigeria? Any other hurdles or challenges with customs/clearing? They are classified as Hazmat. The last set of Lithium Ion Batteries that I brought in from Europe cost me a fortune to ship. I got raped. These I am bringing in from the US. I will update you when they deliver it to my office in Lagos. They quote sounds pretty reasonable. It is coming by sea. The average shipping cost in the US is about $200 per module.
Third, I somehow got the feeling watching your video that these batteries were repurposed for offgrid use from an EV although they seemed to come packaged like new? Is there scope to get/salvage these batteries still in good condition from EVs and thereby make some cost savings?
They come from low mileage EV. There are many EV with over 300000 miles. So yes they present significant cost saving per KWH. Caution. This is where a very good quality inverter comes in handy, Or you have incredible knowledge of what you are doing. They don't recover very well from an over discharge and the can explode and catch on fire when you over charge them. A good BMS is also helpful to help balance he cells for high amp draw applications.
Please pardon my many questions - just trying to wrap my head around this Lithium technology thingy.. Keep them coming |

Which inverter are you planning to use with it. I am curious about the BMS compatibility.
Also when commissioned please post the numbers of allowed charge and discharge current limits reported by BMS at temperatures above 30 deg c Hello Pranil. I might get an Outback FXVR. The Victron works better with the BMS made by Batrium. Once we install I will keep you updated. |

Another milestone Oga Chris Thank you. They are about 3 feet long. 36 inches. Weigh about 55lbs each. Think about it though. That is 62.5 AH at 48V in batteries. You can us 56 AH of it. Very Impressive. I hope all is well with you. |

nonoski: Good day house In continuation of my last post where I'm trying to add solar panels to my already existing inverter. Attached below is a schematic diagram of my intended connection. Total of 15 panels (12 are 300w while 3 are 325w) connected in 3S 5P total 4575w connected to
Midnite Combiner box MNPV6 with a high voltage lightening surge arrestor
Distance from Combiner Box to Cc is 51m so I'm using 16mm2 flex (5AWG)
Outback Flex 80 FM80 MPPT 80 AMP Solar Charge Controller including OutBack Power RTS Remote Temperature Sensor
48 x 400AH battery bank (with ZHC battery equalizer)
3.5kva 48v Exulted Inverter (to be replaced with Must power 5kva)
I will doing all the connections myself, this weekend we will be removing interlocking stone to pass conduit pipes from the PV stand to the building and all other ancillary works.
A few Questions: Is it necessary I include a DC breaker between the Cc and the battery bank (I already intend to put a 100amps breaker between the Combiner box and Cc)
What size of wire do I use between the CC and the battery bank.
Looking at the attached diagram pls is there anything I missed out just incase
Thank you Put an 80 or 90 amp breaker between the controller and battery bank. Trust me you will use it. I use 35 MM between the controller and battery bank. You don't need a 100 amp breaker between the Combiner and controller. Multiply your string current by the number of strings and then add your margin and that is the breaker size. You will also need and use it. |

pranil: Can you please elaborate more on batteries shutting down at 32 DEG. ( I heard it in the video) MY BYD batteries are happily offering full rated capacity( design discharge current limit of 0.7C even at 40 DEG)
But I remember one of the Victron dealers suggesting that they do not bring in Victron Lithium as Nigeria temperatures are too high for them
My temp of the inverter room regularly hits 40 DEG
Attached below is the graph of the temp monitor placed outside the BYD box. My cabinet is not even force cooled so the bank will be at higher temperatures. I have attached photos of inside and the manufacturer's photo of the cabinet ( too late to snap a photo) Hello Pranil, I hope all is well. They restarted at 32 and stopped charging at 40 degrees. The Lynx ION BMS has a lot to do with what happens. Early this morning they full charged with the battery temperature remaining within range. We limited the current to 60 amps as suggested by Victron. The BYD are clearly a better choice than the Victron. They have better thermal management than Victron. The fans run constantly. We will add an AC when we add additional batteries. |
