Boko Haram Strikes Again, Kill Gov Sheriff’s In-law, 3 Others

Thursday, 07 October 2010 00:25 Our Correspondent

Gun totting members of the dreaded Boko Haram sect yesterday evening in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital went wild in a killing spree leaving four dead in the wake of deadly strikes.

They first struck at the residence of   Alhaji Awan Ngala, an in-law of the state governor Ali Modu Sheriff, shooting him dead, LEADERSHIP gathered. Late Ngala was married to the sister of the governor.

Soon after killing Ngala who was a one time chairman of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) in cold blood, they moved to the residence of the Speaker of Borno House of Assembly with clear intent to similarly murder him but luckily, he was not at home. That did not stop the members from shooting dead the two police guards on duty.

From there, they moved to Tashar Kano and descended on the residence of a man whose identity was yet to be established who they also murdered before setting the house ablaze.

Members of Boko Haram have had a running battle with the state since last year July, when they first struck. It led to a brutal gun battle with police and the army before they were contained. Their leader, Mohammed Yusuf was killed in controversial circumstances while in the custody of the police.

Last month they struck at a prison in Bauchi in a daring move to free their members imprisoned for over a year. They set free hundreds of inmates some of whom voluntarily returned.

Apparently, some people will drop dead if the election goes in favor of Jonathan. Looks like I'll be "praying" for a Jonathan victory, even though I still believe he is a blind man in the land of headless men, so that I can sit back and watch some reprehensible malevolent goons twist out of shape and drop dead. Their desperation is so dense you could slice it with a knife. Looks like the straw is a drowning man's best companion.
Ciroma to be exact. He's almost there anyways.

We need to encourage Borno people in Enugu to act likewise.
Anything institution wise with these people has to be Quranic other than that no matter what its not happening. The project was a real failure to our peple. A major hospital with good quality supplies could have been built with that money or something.Or simply they could have just built it anywhere in igboland.I hear poverty is a bit of a problem in Ebonyi state, which is right beside Enugwu smh.

Have a loook at the Biafara charter. It pretty much covers all these aspects. This should be the centre of this subject discussion.

Section D

"6.                 Secularity
[A]          The Nation of Biafra is founded on the Original Identity Principle which declares the self-evident: that the individual is an expression of the ultimate Original Principle, with Whom or with Which the individual shares and enjoys a unique, unalterable relationship. It is up to the individual to personalize and or personify this relationship according to the individual's understanding.

As such, the Nation as a collective does not endorse any particular religion, and freedom of religion-choice, association and worship is guaranteed. The supreme laws that regulate and arbitrate interactional behavior and transactions among citizens of Biafra shall at all times derive from the Nation's constitution, regardless of the parties' religious affiliation.

[C]          The Nation of Biafra does not recognize as Religions institutions that propagate hatred, bigotry, racism, sexism and inequality of human beings as their primary doctrine; nor does it recognize as religion any institutions or institutional practices which do not recognize the fundamental rights of the individual as declared above, or which as a matter of doctrine violates those rights. The Nation of Biafra does not recognize as Religions institutions which preach or practice coercion, including forced conversions or forced membership. No exceptions shall be made just because of the acceptance or classification of such institutions as religions elsewhere."
Nice. This is why I love being Igbo smiley. One of the reason I brought up the idea of the outlaw of Religious Courts is because of the establishment of sharia the judicial system in northern states. I'm guess if it was not done by force then there must have been loop holes in the Nigerian constitution that allowed them the establish the Sharia courts. I thing it is important that every patch be sealed so that nothing like that can ever pop up.

Had to ressurrect this thread up again.I feel some important or interesting issue haven't been discussed yet. such as Laws or Probitions. I think in the new republic that the establishment of religious courts should be outlawed. How do you feel about that?

loose out how ? The event took place simply since there was nothing political attached to it and it showed that their motive was genuine for celebrating the celebration while on the other hand, the igbo was stopped because the motives of ohanaeze was unclear.it may be political and considering the period it was to be celebrated,it threatened the independence day celebration.why is it always igbo vs the rest of nigeria ?
Show me a link where it said the motives were unclear. Show me where it said it may be political. All of the Igbo day celebrations around the world are celebrated starting september 28 so im not getting your comment. It was said that the rice handout was scheduled to commence in the same spot. That was the reason not because the motives of Igbo Day was unclear. It then moved location to another venue of ABJ without being stopped or shut down.I'm going to give you the benefit of a doubt maybe you have information that I haven't seen or maybe you have information that Nigerian newspapers and reports don't but for the benefit of a doubt can you post that information or the link?

Also i've notice that anything that the yoruba do has to be "genuine" I'd appreciate unbias comments also proof supporting your comments. And to address how you and your people are missing out by continuously indulging in another tribes issues and business, the more hand-power a group has the stronger it is, it would be wise to worry about your own group instead of "why not ojukwu day", "you dont see us celebrating OBJ day", "what are they celebrating", "why igbo, igbo, igbo". Not healthy. But anyways your information that I previously asked for would be appreciated not only by me but but the rest of Nairaland.

how ? Egbe omo oduduwa celebrated and called their celebration oduduwa day not yoruba day while ohanaeze day that wanted to celebrate its own chose to use ibo day instead of ohanaeze day and I suggested they should have called it ojukwu day.
They never used Ibo day. And clearly the celebrations as noted was to celebrate yoruba culture. So if Ohaneze called it Ojukwu Day and the same thing happened would you have been making comments as such? Be honest. Jealousy will get you nowhere, while your worrying about how another tribe is promoting their culture yours is losing out.

Don’t endorse any presidential candidate, Igbo students tell Ohanaeze

News Oct 5, 2010

By Tony Edike

ENUGU—THE Igbo Students Association, yesterday, cautioned the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, to drop its plan to endorse a particular presidential candidate for the 2011 election, saying the organisation should remain neutral to ensure its relevance.

In a statement issued by Messrs Eric Udeh and Uchenna Achike, President and Secretary of the group, the students noted with dismay “the untidy way Igbo leaders are going about campaigning for various presidential aspirants without considering our plight as future leaders.”

The group lamented that “unemployment, insecurity, ASUU strike and poverty are dealing with the South East heartlessly, while some Igbo leaders are busy mortgaging away our future in Abuja.

“The Igbo Students Association bemoans the lack of coordination of Igbo leaders.
Some have endorsed Mr. President, while others were locked out in Owerri. We ask whither Ndigbo? What is in it for Ndigbo? What promises have our leaders extracted from the man they have endorsed?”

Insisting that the Igbo cannot give away their support for free, the group wondered why President Goodluck Jonathan had not deemed it necessary to negotiate with Ndigbo over his ambition.

“We hope that a rumour of an impending Ohanaeze endorsement of a particular candidate is not true. Ohanaeze is not a political party; Ohanaeze has no business endorsing presidential candidates,” the group said, warning that any attempt by the umbrella Igbo organisation to endorse any candidate would only polarize Ohanaeze as experienced during the aborted third-term agenda of a former regime.

Kobojunkie:
While I agree to an extent with the statement in bold, it is however, no reason why we should go around accusing people and organizations without some substantial evidence, as is the way many of our Nigerians brothers are used to reasoning.
We already have folks labeling Aljazeera a biased group simply because it also reports on issues that pertain to Nigeria. Is that rational in any way?
News stations tend to be bias wherever you go. You live in OH so i know you already know how bias our news here in the US is. We are always the "Good Guys". Aljazeera is a bias station as well, they tend to counter western news, which is great, but at the same time they tend to promote innocence based on religious affiliations overtly.

Tewmuch al jazeera is another platform for another oppressors of the africans, the arabs. in africa al jazeera main goal is to ezpose the folly of western policies and their allies and to paint the views of their allies. for example they talk about genocide in jos or when boko haram gets massacred, but never cover or mention the word genocide in darfur province in sudan(my brother which is more of a genocide?). in nigeria and in particular at this particular moment when a strong supporter of OIC and the islamization of nigeria is up against a southern christain with a western outlook you should be able to infer who they would support. all media outlet have their play master and write their script to favour them al jazeera is not different, my only advise to nigeria/African in general is we should not let this greed for our resource by different power block globally to define us, we should define our selves. but like fela trully said they have divided us with borders(country, regions), tribe and worst and most potentially dangerous RELIGION angry. Gbawe:
You and Paddy Lo are displaying the bias against the North , along with Jonathan's naive bully boy tactics, that will see power return to the region next year. As things stand , I doubt that jonathan can even win the PDP Primaries let alone retain his position next year. It is outright fallacy from Paddy Lo that  "only OBJ said the truth" . You both talk about IBB and Ciroma , as if they represent the North, while you totally fail to highlight that many Northerners spoke up in defense of Jonathan. Buhari, Col. Umar, Balarabe Musa, EL-Rufai, Ribadu and many others all asked for power to be transfered to Jonathan. The risk with this type of thread is how it will backfire to lose Jonathan support because , increasingly, Nigerians will think that Jonathan winning in 2011 is more about the agitation for an Ijaw Presidency , even if that individual may be disastrous for the entire nation, rather than the search for the individual that will make Nigeria work for all Nigerians.
I agree with the bolded. GEJ's presidency seems to drawing upon ethnic lines. To many of us non-Ijaw nigerians, president jonathans reference to the Ijaw as "My people" was a terrible statement. It left many of us nigerians to believe that as a president of the country,he still doesn't us as his people also. Of course we all know the severity of him excusing MEND from the ABJ bombings so that need not be discussed. As each day passes he seems to be making all of the wrong moves. Inviting ex-militants of Ijaw ethnicity into Aso Rock was a very very misguide and foolish move, no president in their right mind would do that. It's like And Igbo president inviting MASSOB to Aso Rock for talks, or a Yoruba president asking OPC to come for talks, not a good look. GEJ must understand that nigeria is a country where tribalism is still at its pinnacle, many ethnic groups of niger-delta extraction such as the Itsekiri, Urhobo, Isoko, Yoruba sub-group, Igbo sub-group have always have been a while in worries about the aggressive expansionism of the Ijaws. This has led to many wars and bad blood is high amongst them. Jonathans move of inviting the ex-militant leaders is only make these fears more solid.

However, GEJ's only savior is the fact that we southerns are only left with a choice of  GEJ or IBB. Had it been another popular southerner or even northerner, GEJ's chances would be gone.

i challenge you to tell me the customary laws of any ika community that you know ? what forms a customary law ? is it not the culture and tradition of a people ,most ika communities kingship follows benin system ,so the laws follow mostly benin system , that is not to say the people are binis, let me give you an example of owa customary laws .
1. the obiship in owa kingdom , is from father to son, that is by priomgeneiture. this is a bini system.
2. the ugu ,which is the sharing of properties after a man dies , also follows thesame system,as the first male child will inherit all the fathers property .this is called the okaigbe system.
3. in chiefthancy issues too, in hereditory chiefthancy it goes from father to son too.
4. our burial culture is first to question the dead on what the causes of death is ? and if he or she was a witch.if confirmed a witch , the person is buried in the evil forest called ikpekpe .this process of calling the dead is called ima-ihian .
5, our naming ceremony is 7 days for male and five days for female ,this is called idayi or mpoudu .
6. our laws of marriage ,dressing of the lady to be married in owa is very similar to the way the binis, dress their women with beads ,the ika weeding is so cheap ,that they man marrying does not need to rob a bank to marry , unlike some tribes , who almost practically sell their women.our marriage system in owa follows -1. nwuyen, 2. idegbe and 3 ,inyemen systems.
7. each family is headed by a male head who is usually the oldest male ,and each idumu is headed by the oldest men ,called okparan /okibali ,and all the edionmas or elders of owa kingdom are headed by the oldest man in the kingdom called IHAMA- .
8. our villages in owa are segmented into royal and non- royal villages ,and it is only the royal villages that can produce an IHAMA,because the ihama must be of royal blood.
9. in owa there are six royal villages, which are all in owa-oyibu , the headquarters of owa kingdom,- idumuezomor,ogbe-onicha, idah, idumuzugbo, ogbeohun and ikoko -ogbe.people from these villages are children and grand children of the former and present obis of owa kingdom.
10. in ancient times any woman due for marriage is given some tatoos on the body called igu ,by the okainwinas who possess the control of the idinwina cult.this is usually a female dominated cult in the whole of ika land.
11. in ancient times before marriage a lady will be initiated into idinwina society in owa land.
12, while the male will be initiated into idigun -ogun cult, and olokun cult ,and some will do ohointe . while others will go to the obuh( native doctors cult)
13, in burying the dead , if they are old , we perfom elaborate ceremonies that usually lasts up to 9 days, continous feasting.
14, our ancient culture of burying our kings is very elaborate , requiring many animal and human sacrifices in the past of albinos, servants, some chiefs , the first wife and other elaborate issues.
15, the crown prince who will take over from the reigning obi is called EDAIKEN , he will not live in the same kingdom with his father ,following the ancient bini traditions ,in the past the edaiken of owa will not see his father , until the father dies , because according to tradition , there was an oba called orhogbuwa who became so old that his son wanted him dead and after some time the oba died and made a curse that no king from his descendants will ever see his edaiken ,and that was the practice of the obis of owa and other ika kingdoms .
16. the most important and famous festivals of owa people and ika people is called the igue and ewere festival .this marks the end of the year for edo and edo-related people,
i will stop here , and i want those masquerading as ikas , who probably do not know the culture of our people to please tell me what our culture is ?
i am from the idumuezomor village in owa-oyibu , one of the royal villages in owa kingdom , having hailed from the lineage of obi igbegidi no gidigan( the great) ,and the agbontaen and omigie lineage , who for many years have produced several IHAMAS OF owa kingdom and also for close to 700 years have produced priests and priestess of olokun for owa-oyibu .my grand mother wudu mgbejume omigie is recorded in oyibu histories as the third person in a period of 500 years to have attained the revered position of ogbeihagha, ubiugbon and possesor of the knife of authority in idinwina .and chief priestess of olokun for owa-oyibu ,during her life time, having been handed that position by ebonne igbeoba - child of obi igbeoba who in 1906, confronted the british in the famous owa- british war.so apart from reading , we have family and village and town histories well recorded.
It's funny how you try to intertwine everything with the binis. However, nothing to intertwine with Igbos. I challenge you to list the customs and cultural ceremonies that is shared with the Igbos.
