PoliticsRe: South-East Leaders Endorse Jonathan For 2011 by chyz(m): 6:25am On Aug 18, 2010
KenGali:
@Onlytruth, Obiagu1
You guys were earlier calling for the position of Ojukwu, lets not become like those Israelites who after abusing the arc of covenant by carrying it to every war, began to loose the understanding of what it truly stood for. Ojukwu must not make any statement on 2011, his task as a leader is much heavier, and it is by actions not by words.

First, the cause of action of the Igbos in the coming  elections is already set, any political analyst will know that there are not many choices. Secondly, we must not fall prey to our Yoruba brothers who are at every corner, especially on this forum ask us to take a position or even ask us to rationalize our respect for Ojukwu. What we will do we will do, we do not need to say we will do it, no need to answer. Unfortunately GEJ, is also looking for set positions before he will take his line, true brotherhood is based on trust and not broadcasted on radios. For those worried about his Ijaw credentials, a betrayal from him would essentially seal the fate of the Ijaws in Nigerian politics to use and dump. He has much more to loose.

IBB is a Yoruba problem not ours, ours is to bargain for what we want with who ever that can deliver it.  And it is only a pride issue too. In spite of whatever the SW based press likes to make of it, MKO was not dear to Igbo heart.
If I may digress more, the political model of each major group in Nigeria is quite predictable, the north views itself with royal purity, hence by pride will always set itself either as the concessioner or the gladiator. The SE has been practicing multiple light stone throws to gain foothold since the civil war. More like the way fishes spawn off-springs to ensure that at least a few survive.  The South West has ever been playing the corny and the jester and ever strategising on becoming a gladiator but failing. This failing is essentially due to her inability to enfold the east as was the calculation at civil war.  The most interesting side of this is the two prong approach to politics SW always use. In the first republic Awo sought a partnership via emissaries to both Zik and Bello at the same time. This calculation is essentially to shift power from one hand to the other, or maximize chances , maintain the opportunity to play. Today, after so much vocals against Yaradua and for Goodluck, SW is still taking the two prongs, while OBJ is trying to pull off tutoring/control of GEJ in PDP, AC is preparing to harvest the opportunity of a fall out by lining up a candidate (Ribadu) that satisfies the zoning policy that is desired in the north, but condemned in SW (we are often given the impression that its for the new Nigeria lol).
Ojukwu’s role in all this is much heavier than choosing who to support, let the young men follow the laid path. He has to prepare the East for the possible post 2011 election events.  The north like i said before has a false sense of untainted royalty given by Britain, if they loose in 2011, they will respond with pogroms in the north and mostly igbos will be killed, what will be our response? Should the situation escalate, who are our external partners, are we already talking with them? We know US is already planning for such events due to her interest, we also know OBJ did the green-tree agreement to extend relations to western powers.  That’s especially to Ojukwu and Alex Ekwueme to ponder.
Secondly, AC should not catch us by surprise, there is a high risk of PDP splitting, which can make AC suddenly strong. This is what I suspect as OBJ’s interest when he was putting GEJ in confrontational stance earlier. For us SE, if not GEJ, then IBB. Hence we need to get IBB to take an open position on resource control, or even negotiate some level of decentralization of economic resources from Federal Control. We need commitments from both GEJ and IBB on opening and dredging eastern ports.  A large Federal River port in Onitsha, Opening up better trade routes and relations with Central Africa and Camreroon, International Airport, etc.
The big issue is, do we want the North to keep dictating what goes on in nigeria. If it were fair and up to the igbos, they wouldnt vote for jonathan, at least im for sure i would not definitely based on his track record so far. However, GJ becoming president will signify the destruction of the northernern oligarchy especially if the igbos organize and plan well and fix themselves up powerfully ahead of the 2015 elections. If the northerners respond be killings the igbos will as well tit for tat no be big tin. As far as IBB goes he's not Igbo hating but he indeed does have a vendetta against the yorubas for lord knows why. However, nothing about him has changed, u can see it in his eyes(literally). He's the reason why the naira is now useless and he sold the country out to white supremacist organization such as the IMF, which are the modern day slave masters to African country. He did so for his own interest, which is very sad and unmanly. Sure he's always had great ideas, at least he has that unlike GJ who is clueless, uncharismatic, and a puppet, i give him that but he is a terrible organizer and doesnt get these ideas accomplished because of it. He has a seriously low tolerance attitude and a person like that when he says water is orange then water is orange. we dont need someone like that. If rotation is kept then PDP will impose one of there own choice on us again suchas Orji Kalu. Its definitely not going to be anybody that the Igbos want.GJ smells like a snake, you can trust a man who says nothing from the time he was VP till now, the time when he is president. So with all of this where do you go from there?

I have noticed that northern parts in many countries are usually oppressive for some reason but i see where you coming from ive also wandered down that line of thinking before too. However, the North did not will the Nigerian civil war.

Tot tittt tat. Ikwerres are Igbos right? They were the ones who took over Igbo's properties. Don't accuse people with such generalization and then narrow it down when it suits your opinion. Igbos enjoyed other Igbo's suffering. That's what you should see. The two democratic governors are Igbos.

Let's not close our mouth when the food only taste bad because we don't like the chef. What we should be concerned about now is the cultural genocide about to happen in Rivers State. We shouldn't be worried about who is Igbo and who is not,
Wow, i never knew i was talking to you.when i ask for your response then we can talk. Anyways, Eziachi thanks for the insight.

Eziachi:
I was born a couple of minute away from the said Waterfront, in the area which is now called Creek road. Cannot believe how Ghetto and shanty Waterfront looked when I visited there three years ago after almost 25 years absent. The whole place has become a den for robbers and all sort of illegality. The last time I was in Borokiri, was 1982, when we accompanied my father to finally legally repossesses our two storey house occupied by an Ijaw family since 1970 as an abandoned property- until  Sam Mbakwe came to power and personally talk to Melford Okilo to get back what is ours.
Okrikas needed to be told the truth by Gov’ Amaechi and I was happy that Magnus Abe was sitting there when he was telling them how it is.  They don’t see his action as a change for better future but rather an Igbo man trying to build better houses and mindful of the ecological mine field if their demand to sand filled where they wanted.  From what I heard, their opposition to this project is based on the fact that they believed Amaechi’s his Igbo brothers will buy up development tomorrow when it’s finished.   Which in my opinion is a legitimate concern, as Igbo’s are more likely to have the financial power to buy the new development or get mortgage on them, so Amaechi, should do all he can to address that fear with an advance policies.
But If it were before, he would had been kitty-footing around them because of the Ijaw block vote in elections, but since they calved out Bayelsa, those Okrika, Tai people now knew that they are in minority and can’t do anything. But having said that, there are great link between Okrika and Ndigbo as many family are very much related through blood, though their politicians will tell them otherwise because of wicked politics.
I dont get it. What is stopping these people in becoming as financial established as the Igbos in that state? Even when bayelsa was still rivers state it was like that. why is it like that? They had governors of their own and even where given igbo property and land unlawfully by the government so what then is stopping then education and financial-wise?

Igbo Summit: Ohaneze dissociates self from Jonathan’s endorsement
…President yet to decide on 2011 -Aide

Wednesday, August 18, 2010

The apex Igbo body, Ohaneze Ndi-Igbo, has distanced itself from the resolution of the Igbo political summit which, last Monday, endorsed the touted presidential ambition of Dr. Goodluck Jonathan. The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation insisted that the Igbos were yet to take a position on the matter.

Secretary-General of the group, Chief Nduka Eya, who spoke to our reporter in Enugu, yesterday, noted that what was held in Enugu Monday was a political summit, “and you know we are not a political organization. So, their stand has nothing to do with Ohaneze. Ohaneze is careful about what it says, that’s why we are still consulting.”

“I don’t think we should be in a hurry to take a position. These are people looking for something and that is not part of Ohaneze programme. Our problem is how to unite our people so that we can stand and talk as a people and that is what we are concerned about.

“So, what happened was organized by an interest group and you know that it will not be the last because more groups will surely organize their own summit and reach similar decisions.
“We don’t get involved in independent political agenda because we are an umbrella body and we are interested in what concerns all Igbos because so many of us belong to different political parties. Ohaneze tolerates different political views but as the umbrella body we make wide consultations and provide a neutral ground for the best decision that will have the overall interest of all Igbos.”
Also speaking on the summit, the National Publicity Secretary of Ohaneze, Ralph Ndigwe, noted that this time was a very crucial period and “what the Ohaneze is doing is that we are doing wide consultations, reaching out to all stakeholders no matter the party because it is a serious issue and Igbos must be very careful in taking a stand.

“We are yet to take a stand and even when the matter came up at the Imeobi, we agreed that we must tread carefully. So, we are consulting and at the end of the day we may convene an Igbo summit that will be all inclusive and where everybody will participate, no matter the party one belongs.”
The South-East Political Summit, which held at the Presidential Hotel, Enugu, had, in a three-point communiqué, endorsed Dr. Goodluck Jonathan for the 2011 presidential election, noting that the Igbos would not want to play the second fiddle any longer.

Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, who was the first to speak at the event, had urged the Igbos to adopt Jonathan so he could complete the joint ticket of late President Umaru Yar’Adua, arguing that due to the constitutional provisions only he could govern for four years after which he would support an Igbo president.
Also, the Chairman of the summit, Chief Mbazuluike Amaechi, noted that only a Jonathan president could guarantee an Igbo president in 2015 and urged the Igbos to weigh their options properly and support their South South neighbours.

He warned the people of the South East against supporting a candidate they were not sure would be victorious at the polls; “at least it is a known fact that no incumbent president has lost an election in Africa and this will definitely not be different.”
The absence of the five governors of the South East as well as political office holders from the zone at the Summit almost took the shine off the event but the Ohaneze has assured that its summit would be all inclusive and must involve everybody in Igbo land.

Meanwhile, the Presidency has denied reports in Reuters, an international news agency, quoting “Presidency” sources that President Jonathan might have decided against running in next year’s elections.
A statement from Ima Niboro, Special Adviser, Media and Publicity, to the President, accused interested parties of sponsoring the story.
It stated that the president had not said whether he would run or not, adding that he had, at different times, given reasons why he considered it premature to make any commitment either way.
“At the appropriate time, the president will inform his country men and women of his future plans. Until then, every comment on the subject remains mere speculation,” the statement said.

The CBN act states that once a CBN governor has been nominated(for a 5yr term) he cant be removed unless by 2/3rds of the senate. . and house of reps voting to do so
so Sanusi is their for the next 4yrs. . .Jonathan cant just remove him,u have to blame Yaradua for not re-nominating Soludo

We already had Finance during OBJs time,so its ok if it goes to a yoruba man this time

Agric seems to be a northern thing thats why they get it

National planning should have been an igbo man. . true

COAS. . .believe me once Jonathan wins next yr dambazzau will be gone. . so maybe we will get that one

Petroleum is a Niger delta thing. . although we also produce oil. . .

but like i said i believe Barth Nnaji will be minister of power next yr. . he is already in charge of it
its as good as Petroleum
cool
As much as we need, have beeen begging and begging for years about the Onitsha Bridge and screwed up roads more than any other region. he couldnt even give us National Planning knowing we have been screwed time and time again??!!!!!!

And as far as the army goes of course even if dambazza goes.jonathan is definitely going to put in another northner(fulani/hausa). to make it fair id say maybe some one from edo would be good or the east

Pls i'll appreciate it if you name those 5 ministers or could it be that their portfolios are somewhat irrelevant? And pls what has the Chairman of a party got to do with Jonathan's cabinet. Pls just tell us the real reason why you nwant igbos to support Jonathan. We Igbo must stop fooling ourselves. This is 2010 bro.
Its funny cause i was just about to reply him asking him the same and what those positions were. Also dont call nwodo, his position was based on pdp rotation to the southeast.not because jonathan wanted him in his cabinet. and what can a new comptroller of immigration do and what does that have to do with his cabinet?

Nah, I think most of us just concerned that EzeIlekeidiUche is so adamant on wiping out the Ijaw nation and stealing their land/oil for the glory of Ibo land!
youve got it wrong the land was taken from the igbos during and around the civil war time. Those parts that are being taken is not there land.it was ceded to them after they agree to drop there support for the east region and join nigeria and fight against the Igbos. The reason why more of the igbo land was not taken from the ikwerre(igbos) is because they agreed to disassociate themselves from the igbo and call themselves ikwerres( which is the name of their area). as far as taking the true ijaw land im completely against it.

Last I checked, the choice is not even between IBB and GEJ(both belong to the same Party). There are the donald dukes and the other candidates out there.
at this point, duke stands no chance honestly speaking i think we all know that. voting for duke will only work in favor of IBB. The only hope is Ribadu but he seems to be at a holt as of now so its not looking good for him right now either but if he hurries than we can talk business.

marcdunu:
10 Reasons why this endorsement is ridiculous from an Igbo viewpoint.

1. Goodluck Johnathan is not the best candidate from the old eastern region.

2. Goodluck Johnathan's Ijaw ethnic group do not believe in the old East and are still the highest opposers of Old East, so the sentiment of Old East is based on nothing.

3. Goodluck Jonathan Has less Igbos in his Government than Yar'adua or OBJ and can not claim to love the Igbos when his actions suggest otherwise.

4. Goodluck Jonathan as President has taken the South East for granted. Maurice Iwu, Sam Egwu, Ojo Maduekwe, Onyiuke-Okereke, may not all be great public servants but their are better public servants from the East who could have at least replaced half of these folks. But GEJ prefered others.

5. GEJ was part of those who initially ganged up to highlight the difference between a South-East Igbo ONOVO and a South-South Igbo Okiro when Yar'adua first took office. GEJ can not be a friend of the South East.

6. Vincent Ogbulafor could have made mistakes in his utterances. But his removal and rubbishing of Ogbulafor, the appointment of a compromised Nwodo whom GEJ can use to play football does not signify he holds the Igbos in high esteem. He is simply geering up to use Igbo sons and daughters as his tool. They even flirted with replacing Ogbulafor with Polycap Nwite because he is from River State. Talk about being divisive.

7. The retention of Dora Akunyili as info Minister instead moving her to a more suitable ministry proves the above. Dora Akunyili has been replaced by Ima Niboro in being the spokesman of GEJ which obviously is the right thing. But  whenever there is a controversial announcement GEJ hides Ima Niboro and deploys Dora Akunyili to do his dirty job.

8. Since GEJ became President he has not flirted with the SouthEast in anyway, not openly nor subtly. He has largely ignored the SouthEast believing that by mere making up middle names like "Ebele", "Azikiwe", "Nnamdi", "Okeke" he will simply get the Igbo Vote. Surely we are not as empty as that.

9. The Ijaws were never our allies and never will be. If GEJ was Efik or Ibibio, I could see justifications for these baseless sentiments. But Iwuanyanwu's sentiments are based on nothing.

10. As we speak everybody who is somebody in Ijaw land from Oronto Douglas to Edwin Clark do not spare any opportunity to remind us who their allies are. They say the North are their allies and they have a proud history of working with the North for the progress of Nigeria. WELL IT IS TIME FOR THEIR NORTHERN BROTHERS TO STEP DOWN FOR JONATHAN GOODLUCK. THEY DON'T NEED ANY ENDORESEMENTS FROM THE EAST.

If Iwuanyanwu and Ezeife believe that Jonathan Goodluck is the best candidate they should tell us that. That sounds more honourable. But if this is based on sentiments, Jonathan does not deserve any sentiment from the East. They should go and liaise with their born-to-ruin allies.
I dont think i can disagree with anything you've said because quite frankly everything is true but the its between him and IBB,who is worse than the other?
PoliticsRe: South-East Leaders Endorse Jonathan For 2011 by chyz(m): 6:33pm On Aug 17, 2010
I agree with what Ezeuche is saying. Igbo interest is first and foremost until equality and trust is reached in nigeria. I dont understand why instead of speaking your minds, when some people gang up on one person another person hops in to sound "politically correct".That is the problem with alot of people on nairaland. Igbos must play the game how it goes we might be democratic by nature but the only place that can hold up for the igbos at this point of time is in Igbo land not "Nigeria". Ijaws or any other tribe must not be trusted, just like they are looking out for their own interest, the igbos must do the same. There's no such thing as brotherhood in southern politics outside of tribe at this point.

Deceit in my words? Am I the one responsible for the problems in Ibo land now? lol  Am I now to blame for all the many terrible endorsements from many of these same leaders in the past? Are my now to blame for the ibos who have somehow dumbed themselves down so they can enforce the will of the few leaders, many of whom are marred in corruption and deceit? Am I responsible for the decisions made by these ohaneze leaders that have gone far to help in destroying ibo land over the last 5 decades?

The reason for a democracy is so people can dispense with the old follow-follow mentality and as individuals plot the path to the future for themselves. Ibos can live united even with different opinions and votes. A group does not have to vote the same way, speak the same language, dress the same way and share the same culture to be regarded as united. That old way of reasoning has failed over and over that I think it is it is overwhelmingly clear that not all these Ibo leaders necessarily have the good of Ibos at heart.

Again, I ask you, how competent are these individuals to whom to whom you have given the power to make decisions for you?
Jonathan remains the man at this time hands down. Thumbs up for the South. End of Discussion. cool

Why are they making any decision for anything but their own selves? Why are they making it for Ibo people?

Please desist from offering up the equally silly reason of how every other group is doing the same. Should Ibos also plunge to their deaths if any other socio-cultural group in Nigeria is doing the same? Must Ibos continue  the culture of follow-follow that has brought us to where we are today?

Are these Ohaneze leaders really competent beings for them to go about claiming to make decisions almost on behalf of Ibos? Why should an endorsement possibly made of personal bias or greed translate into a group endorsing the same?
I smell deceit in your words. I'm not an illiterate or a fool. having discrepancies within a group is normal there is no such thing a follow-follow.Your deceit is not working. It sounds more like you dont want the Igbos to come to a common consensus on voting i.e. for jonathan and not a northerner. You are the same person who was arguing left and right for the power to stay in the north so your claim of innocents has no substance.

They will be making there decision based on conditions given. Whoever will be in agreement with the decison then thats the man they are going with. And btw, what socio-cultural group in nigeria is not doing the same as far as have different feelings on candidate to go with?

This is a clear example of the beef between the Igbos and the Ijaws and why there is tension when it comes to the Igbos deciding to go with a Jonathan presidency or a northern presidency. Ijaws have tried so many times to supress the Igbos and it always ends with them screwing themselves double. Bayelsa was created to cut off the hold that the ijaws were trying to put on the Igbos.By creating the state a huge chunk of ijaws where taken out of river state which gave the ikwerre(igbos) and other groups more breathing room. The creation of Bayelsa was the handy-work of the igbos. Now as before the shadiness of the Ijaws towards the Igbos are coming right back to bite them in the azz with what Gov. Amaechi is doing to them. The Ijaws will never learn that when the Igbos get back to them its going to be 10 times worse. This is the reason why ijaws envy the Igbos especially Edwin Clarke.

Okrika  Town  Hall  Meeting: Booing Galore As Gov Amaechi Dares Okrika People…Says Waterfronts Must Go Down

It was a booing session at Okrika Local Government Council, venue of the Town Hall Meeting organized by the Rivers State Government, as Gov Rotimi Amaechi dared Okrika people on the issue of the waterfronts demolition.

Governor Amaechi who visited Okrika on Thursday, August 5, 2010, told the people of Okrika point-blank, that he would unfailingly demolish the waterfronts, rebuild it and sell to prospective buyers.

Knowing the sensitivity of the issue of the demolition of the waterfronts to the Okrika people, the governor began his speech by declaring that he would “stir the hornets nest” with the statement that the demolition of the waterfronts was a foregone conclusion.

He however, said he would pay for the houses before demolition and pointed out that he was not in Okrika to take permission from them, but rather to tell them to their face that they could do nothing to deter him on his decision to demolish the waterfronts.

Like a man who was prepared to live up to  his statement of stirring the hornets nest, Gov. Amaechi told the people of Okrika that he cared less if he was liked by them or not as government was not a popularity test but rather the ability to deliver.

With the booing and interruptions mostly from the womenfolk going on continuously, Gov Amaechi, who apparently felt they should be grateful to him, lambasted past government officials of Okrika origin for causing chaos in their land which he had to take care of.

He said the greatest problem of Okrika was insecurity before he became governor and that lives were wantonly taken, night life a thing of the past and permission taken from some persons before bereaved families could bury their dead, and the same occurred before building houses.

The chiefs, he added, lost control and found it difficult to talk to the boys and challenge any of the past leaders of Okrika to walk freely, un-escorted, in Okrika at night, the way he would do in his own town.

He said land was also forcefully taken which he had tried to correct by the taking over of some of them mostly at Okochiri.

Another booing session by the women occurred when he said the proliferation of guns in Okrika did not happen in Ikwerre land.

Despite entreaties by prominent sons of Okrika including the chairman of the Divisional Council of Chiefs, (Dr) Tari Sekibo Odoabaji and the INC president, Dr Atuboyedia Obianime on the issue of the waterfronts, the governor stood his ground, but rather made the impossible demand that they sign an agreement that no criminal activity would ever occur at the waterfronts and that should there be any reported case, he would without further consultations send the bulldozers for action.

He also rejected the plea for the sand filling of the nearby mangroves as an alternative place for the would-be displaced citizens.

Governor Amaechi said his administration, within a space of three years, had done what past Okrika leaders could not do for several years by building schools, health centres and ring road which he said he reviewed from N900m to N3 billion and had paid all, while the contract was given to a son of Okrika.

Amaechi said when he was a speaker, before the end of his tenure, he endeared himself to his people by building roads in every Ikwerre community, while none was done for the Okrika people by their past leaders.

He also said he had set aside N3.6 billion to build a secondary school in Okrika, if land would be provided as the Anglican Church refused him to rebuild the Okrika Grammar School, OGS, and went ahead to read out several names of Okrika sons and daughters studying on state government's scholarship at home and abroad.

The governor laughed when a young lady suggested the building of a University in Okrika, wondering where that would be situated, as his request for land to build a secondary school has not been met.

Gov Amaechi, who was accompanied by the deputy governor, Engr. Tele Ikuru, had earlier paid courtesy visit on the Amanyanabo of Ogoloma, HRH. E.T.I Obudibo, Ikwo the 5th, in his palace at Ogoloma.

Several dignitaries attended the Okrika Town Hall Meeting, including Senator George Sekibo, Rt. Hon (Barr) John Kalipa, Member representing Okrika/Ogu/Bolo federal constituency in the House of Representatives, Dr. Magnus Abbe, SSG, Hon. Andrew Uchendu, Hon. Linda Somiari-Stewart, Member RSHA Commissioners of Information, Health and Education, Okrika Divisional Council of Chiefs, Mr. Miabiye Kuroyemima, the IYC President and several other dignitaries.

Bros, believe me I feel every bit of your pain. I'm only hoping that the Ijaws have changed for sure, because we won't be anyone's fall guy again in Nigeria.

All these have the handwritings of Amb Ralph Uwechue. I suspect that he/Ohanaeze and Ijaw National Council reached some kind of agreement.
The man is working hard behind the scenes. So, I hope they know a lot more than we do.

Ekwueme presented the 6 geopolitical regions in the 1995 Abacha constitutional conference. It was adopted.

That is how south south came to be.
The Ijaws are only looking out for their interest, they envy the igbos so much. Id rather trust a northerner than them. However, as long as IBB or the others are up as candidates ill go for jonathan. Although since hes been in office igbo continue to lose positions. Inspite of whatever agreements the Igbos are making with the Ijaws, what will the igbos do after goodluck jonathan is president then the ijaws decide to dump the igbos and start betraying?

Why don't you focus on the argument being made and intellectually argue a point as opposed to attacking my personality and "people like me" we're not arguing about THEORIES or evolution which are controversial to say the least. we're talking about the AFRICAN's INABILITY TO BUILD A STABLE AND PROSPEROUS SOCIETY/ENLIGHTENED CIVILIZATION on his own (without Arabs and Europeans) and whether this is caused by a lack of intellectual capacity as implied by Friedman (The wheel hadn't been invented in parts of Africa by the 19th century) Take your theories of evolution elsewhere.
You all should read this book.It should answer the bolded question. The author was assassinated like many other Pan-Africanists.

PoliticsRe: Goodluck Jonathan's Facebook Status About Settler/indigene Issue In Nigeria by chyz(m): 9:15am On Aug 16, 2010
Justcash:
"I read your complaints about the Settler/Indigene dichotomy and many of you are calling for a constitutional amendment to solve this issue, however, the truth is that the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has already abrogated that dichotomy for the simple reason that it does not recognise any difference between the two , sets of people. If there is a difference as some insist, it is only in their minds and we must as Nigerians begin the peaceful processes of rebuilding the foundations of our citizenship. As far as our present Constitution is concerned, ALL Nigerian citizens are indigenes of any part of Nigeria. And our history is replete with a demonstration of this fact. For example the Great Zik of Africa won an election in Ibadan. Malam Umaru Altine was the first elected Mayor of Enugu and Felix Okonkwo (known as Okonkwo 'Kano') was a member of the Northern Nigeria House of chiefs. Since there is precedent for it in the past, we have to remove the glass ceiling in our minds that still believes in the Settler/Indigene dichotomy. Under the Nigerian Constitution, there is absolutely nothing stopping any Nigerian citizen who has taken residency in a state, town or ward from participating in the governance processes of that State, Town or Ward including contesting elections if the individual fulfils the constitutional requirements of residency and tax payment. If Nigerian immigrants can win City Council elections in the U.S, mayoral elections in Ireland and most recently Parliamentary seats in the British House of Commons, it should certainly be possible for a Nigerian with ancestral origins from Sokoto to win an election in Port Harcourt and vice versa. As I said, the Nigerian Constitution permits it, there are precedents for it and the only thing we have to do is to give effect to our constitutional rights which speak to our unity and our collective aspirations for peaceful co-existence and greatness.
