Jonathan Assigns Portfolio To 31 Ministers, Creates New Ministries, Redeploys Minister Of Transport

Posted: July 11, 2011 - 21:16

By SaharaReporters, New York

Exactly six weeks after he took office, President Goodluck Jonathan today updated his cabinet to 31 Ministers.  He had vowed he would have the full cabinet, which is expected to be made up of 42 persons, in place in two weeks.

A statement from the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr. Anyim Pius Anyim, also announced changes in the cabinet today, as approved by the president. Among them:

Yusuf Suleman has been moved from the Ministry of Transport to the Sports Commission as Chairman and Minister after he reportedly demanded huge bribes from NIMASA last week. Mr. Suleiman was slated to be dropped from the cabinet but the Sultan of Sokoto reportedly intervened; Idris Umar is now the Minister of Transport;  Navy Captain Caleb Olubolade moves to the Ministry of Police Affairs; Mrs. Olajumoke Akinjide becomes Hononorable Minister of State, FCT; and A new Ministry of Communication Technology.

The government said the new Ministry would be headed by a Minister "who is very versatile in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT), to give it the desired focus in view of the critical importance of ICT in driving a modern economy.". Mr. Jonathan also made Olusegun Aganga, the former finance minister,  the  "Trade and Investment" minister. The new ministry is expected to bring investments into Nigeria.

Jonathan's cabinet is mostly his old cabinet from the previous administration.  His critics question his snail pace as well as lack of courage to bring in a healthy dose of technocrats to generate new ideas and momentum.

While he has preached a so-called "transformational agenda," Jonathan has so far failed the first test of transparency by failing to declare his assets or generate an offensive against corruption, Nigeria's perennial enemy.  Indeed, cracks may already have begun to appear in the fabric of his government, as the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Mohammed B. Adoke, declared during his screening at the Senate that the anti-corruption agencies do not properly understand their their statutory mandates, and that they lack the capacity to investigate and prosecute economic crimes.  But it is to those agencies that Jonathan pledged to hand his war against corruption.

The updated cabinet is as follows:

She never "resigned" from the Ministry of Finance. She was demoted by OBJ for "disobedience" to Foreign Ministry where she resigned two months or so later.

PoliticsRe: "Non-interest Banking", Why Use That Frieghtful Aglorithme"Islamic Banking" by Chyz2: 2:17pm On Jul 10, 2011
There is nothing wrong with the muslim,in the north, having their islamic banking, however, islamic banking is not the only form of non-interest banking. It is just a system that practices it. With that being said, why can't other non-interest banking be brought to nigeria as well?  It is clear that if non-islamic forms of non-interest banking is introduceed as well then islamic banking will only servive in the core north,if even that. This will definitely cut off his plans to spread islam to southward.

Ex-governor in trouble over Boko-Haram

By Yusuf Alli 2 hours 31 minutes ago

As security agencies heighten the manhunt for Boko Haram suspects, security agencies are said to be on the trail of a former governor for interrogation. The ex-governor is however said to have temporarily relocated to China.

Also, security agencies have uncovered shocking discoveries from some suspects which pointed to the fact that the insurgency might be more political than religious.

Investigation by our correspondent showed that security agencies have recorded a major breakthrough in their crackdown on the Boko Haram militia. However, they are said to be waiting to interrogate the former governor.

It was learnt that investigations so far have revealed that the security agencies need to interact with the ex-governor whose testimony may provide “further insight” into the crime.

A top security source, who spoke in confidence, said: “We have reached a convenient point that we need to interact with a former governor. All attempts to speak with the ex-governor have been unsuccessful as we have report that he has relocated to China.

“But whatever it is, we will relate with the ex-governor because his testimony is vital to the final leg of our investigation into the Boko Haram menace. We will soon quiz the ex-chief executive. There are allegations against the extent of involvement of the ex-governor in the emergence of Boko Haram for political motives.”

He added: “Our interaction with some of the suspects has confirmed that they could not read Quran properly, some have smattering knowledge of the Holy Book.

“The pattern of killing so far has confirmed that Boko Haram have been attacking members of the ruling All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) in the state. We are suspecting rumpus within the political class which is having a spiral effect on the state.”

Responding to a question, the source added: “The security situation in Borno State is compounded by the high presence of Chadian and Nigerien in the state.

“That of Chadians is more worrisome as many of them are rebels from the war-torn country. This is the sketch of the security challenges we are confronting in Borno. That is why we are doing much of intelligence work in the state.”

As at press time, findings have confirmed that the Federal Government has stepped up security patrol at the country’s waterways.

The source said: “Although the security problems are limited to the North, we have tightened situation along our waterways and seaports. We opted for a total security beef up so that we won’t be confronted with a challenge in the South after addressing the insurgency in the North.

The Guardian learnt that contrary to some belief that she would be coming “to take over power” from the CBN governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, Okonjo-Iweala is expected to strengthen relationship with the CBN leadership in a way that will benefit the economy.

“The CBN governor has been a lone ranger, indeed. Now, there is a sense of relief in the presidency that another courageous partner, a very knowledgeable economist, is coming on board to give good leadership that will shield Sanusi Lamido Sanusi from the hawks who always see everything from religious and ethnic prism,” a presidency source explained at the weekend.

Sanusi is sweating and peeing his pants right now. grin. . .Either you introduce non-interest banking or you don't introduce any form of it at all. Islamic banking is not the only form of non-interest banking so why is there no introduction of there other forms of it if it really is about the economy? This is the first question Aunty Ngozi will ask grin. Obviously he is being sectional.

Because if they negotiate and grant "their" request than the US and EU will have to come up with a new way to disintegrate nigeria by 2015. This boko haram nonsense seems like conspiracy and the workings of non-african entities.

Atiku blasts Aganga, hails Okonjo-Iweala

Written by Friday, 08 July 2011

Former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, has commended former Managing Director of the World Bank, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, for speaking truthfully about the state of the nation’s economy and the pace of budget implementation in the country.

He particularly praised the former Managing Director of the World Bank who publicly told the Senate on Wednesday at the screening of ministerial nominees that the Federal Government’s current expenditure is almost 74 per cent of the national budget, leaving virtually nothing for capital expenditure.

The former vice-president recalled that when he criticised the unwieldy recurrent expenditure of the 2011 budget at the expense of capital expenditure, the former Finance Minister, Olusegun Aganga, publicly branded him ignorant.

According to Abubakar, it is impossible to bring any development to the country and improve the living standard of the citizens when the recurrent expenditure incredibly overshoots the capital expenditure.

In his reaction to the national budget structure during his campaign for the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) presidential ticket in December 2010, Abubakar said: “your recurrent budget is 107 per cent of the total revenue. Put differently, your capital budget is one trillion whereas your deficit or planned borrowing is N1.4trillion, meaning that even with a zero capital budget, you plan to borrow about N400 billion to add to revenue to finance consumption… No one needs to be an economist to appreciate that this is a disaster.”

He recalled that the former Finance Minister, Aganga wrote a 40-page rebuttal to denounce his (Atiku’s) position that the budget was flawed in a language Atiku then described as “gutter and disrespectful.”

The former Vice President noted that, at this critical moment of national challenges for development, Nigeria needs courageous and honest professionals like Okonjo-Iweala, who can truthfully advise the President.

The former PDP presidential aspirant warned that leaders should not surround themselves with opportunists and sycophants who insulate them from reality.

Describing Okonjo-Iweala’s statement before the Senate as a vindication of his previous position on the budget, Atiku said the appointment of the former Managing Director of the World Bank is a clear message to Nigerians that the former Minister had no idea of what to do to with the economy.
