Everywhere it is practised, it is called Islamic Banking. Why then do we have to change the name in Nigeria?
According to LSL, the point of the banking system is to help enhance the economy so what is the need of it being named "Islamic Banking"? Why should it be based off the Koran, using Arabic words. Is detaching religious influence taking away from it being solely a "non-interest bearing bank"? WHy should a customer have to say/obide by an oath? I hope this isn't also a way to make the unaware(unaware of islam) make Shahada( which is the muslim version of the christian baptism into christianity). It sure looks like it to me.

The SE should conclude its term (I believe up till next March) and then the PDP can give the post to whatsoever zone it deems fit
SE is not asking to take over another zone's position; they are simply asking for their position back.
No, this is the best time to drop it. The polity is high, meaning their is infighting bebween various poltical regions, which is good for the SE. You want to keep the rancor between the two zones as high as possible. If the SE takes the position back, trust me, they will screw themselves out of a great opportunity.

Good thought but I sense something else here. It's very possible that the main motive here is that the SE wants to serve-out the term and be in a better position to negotiate for who gets the chairmanship next which would then see them being in a position to occupy the BOT chairmanship since, it isn't tactically right for the SW to occupy the BOT and chairmanship at the same time with Obj still being the BOT chairman.

With the North in 2, 3, 4 and occupying most of the NWC, its political suicide for the SE not to have a presence in the party's internal power equation - which by the way, is quite very powerful.

Can u see the main motive here?  Having no member of the SE in the NWC of the party is as dangerous as vying for the presidency using a minor party like APGA.

The idea of it going to the SW is good and i support the move but let the SE get the chairmanship and then move into BOT. This would be the ultimate presidential-dream assassination of the North.
I here where you are coming from, but, there is nothing more or less to call this move by the SE than naivity and greed. Sorry to say it but it's the truth. They are in the perfect position. They should be fighting for the BOT since even the SW PDP is trying to uproot OBJ. Also, the SE should work or make an arrangement of support in which they support the SW for Nation CHaimanship and the SW support them for BOT. Although this may be uneasy to do now since the SE polticians never even saught the mind to do this from the beginning. They are fools, lol. The SW,everyone knows, is for ACN so what hurt would it do them if the SW takes national chairmanship, especially if it is also checked by BOT chairamnship?

the chairman of PDP can put SE people in the right position in the Party

think of it this way, 2015 when the SE want to produce the president, the chairman can infulence the party and delegates to present a SE candidate in the name of the party
Calculia:

National Chairman is a key position wen it comes to 2015, presidential race. The North will hold it for now but my guess is the southwest will get it as a means to steal southwest voters from ACN.
I think politically its a dumb move by the SE PDP,who always lack sophistication. Their tenure is up next year march,so getting that position now is not going to change anything or work in their favor. It would be naive for them to be thing about an Igbo PDP candidate instead of an Igbo candidate regardless party affiliation. There is no way an Igbo candidate will ever come out of PDP so they need not waste time and save themselves the trouble.

The SE is position pretty good, although not the best, but good enough. They have an opportunity to make things easier for them. They have the NE and SW battling each other. The smart thing to do would be to keep it that way. The SW PDP is already being ridiculed, etc for their low performance. It would be smart to put their support behind the SW for that position. It would weaken the North's influence, especially leading up to 2015. This will also make for better support for the SE by the SW,politically(party based, though).

Maybe someone can give me a better insight though. huh

PoliticsStay Away From Christians, Boko Haram Warns Muslims In Nigeria by Chyz2(op): 3:11am On Jul 07, 2011
Stay Away from Christians, Boko Haram warns Muslims in Nigeria
…Every none Muslims in Government is Infidel and marked for Death

The Boko Haram menace has taken a dramatic twist with its call on all Muslims in Nigeria to stay away from Christians, Security Agents, Government institutions and functions or face death.

It maintained that since the present Federal Government is not Islamic, every employee is considered an infidel marked for elimination.

This came on the heels of reports that the group just stormed the divisional police headquarters in Toro Local Government area of Bauchi state, carting away arms and ammunition. It was not clear if any police officer was murdered.

The deadly group urged Muslims to stay away from Christians, their houses, businesses and churches because they are targets of attacks.

This warning is contained in a statement issued by the spokesman, Abu Zaid and exclusively obtained by pointblanknews.com.

According to Zaid "The only dialogue in this crisis is as follows: Stop abiding by the constitution in our land (Dualan Usmaniyya), and government must be sincere and stop terrorizing Muslims in Maiduguri and parts of the North, then there should be a time limit for ceasing fire to gauge Government commitment in keeping to its promise, which cannot be more than ten years."

The group boasted that it was yet to employ 5 percent of its military might and weaponry.

Said Zaid "What is holding us back is the innocent civilian population, but as soon as people stay clear from security agents we will launch a full-scale attack. Unarmed Muslims were picked up from their homes and from their hospital beds and summarily executed; the world saw it on AlJazeera. Yet the same Government wants to forgive us for the wrongs they meted on us. In actual sense, we are the ones that should give amnesty to the Borno State Government."

According to Boko Haram "We as a group don't kill people who are innocent. What we are trying to tell people is that, in regaining the pride of the people in Islam, people have to endure in losing their properties and sometimes lives are also involved and this can fall on everyone, including us."

The statement continued "This is a government that is not Islamic. Therefore, all its employees-Muslims and non-Muslims are Infidels. This is a Government which naturally fights Islam because Muslims were killed were killed in Zagon Kataf, in Jos and Southern Kaduna but the perpetrators have never been prosecuted by the so-called existing laws of the land. Mosques were destroyed and punishment for this is death. Therefore, we have the right to kill them all. But if there are people who profess Islam and do not take part in Government or Western Education, their blood and wealth are sacred unless otherwise."

The group also explained how they get finance and ammunition “Nobody is asking the Niger Delta Militants where they are getting the weapons, nobody is asking Christians in Jos and Southern Kaduna the source of their funds to buy weaponry, but they are questioning where we are getting ours! It is very easy to get weaponry in this part of the world. Each day we look for money through lawful means. We task ourselves and sell our properties like Houses and cars since we are now fugitive and use the proceeds to buy arms."

The statement said the group would only accept the apologies of former Governor Ali Modu Sheriff, if he  dissociates  himself from"  anti-Islamic activities such as democracy, etc, and withdraw his support or contribution to either his cronies and political associates nationwide, then he should come and join us to fight the system he helped build even as an adviser. We believe Allah will forgive him because it is not us that he has wronged but Allah because he is committing shirk (unbelief)."

According to Boko Haram "We are not in doubt that we are going to win this war. So far we have an upper hand. Even if it means bringing external forces, we will fight to win. History has shown that when you are fighting in the cause of Allah there will be a divine intervention, which we have so far seen with the ongoing war with security agents"

The group that has murdered dozens of policemen in recent weeks concluded " Our cause is purely religious. Muslims should try as much as they can to be neutral. And we are aware that traditional rulers, religious leaders and house owners etc are meeting in different parts of the north on how to undermine our activities and track us down. We urge them to stop; if not we will turn their areas and states like Maiduguri."

What exactly is being rewritten? we are simply asking you to explain yourself.

Now you are changing your story saying that Igbo wasnt taught in school, lol. How do you expect someone to accept your stories after comitting something like that?

Also, since it was the Iggo language being taugh in churches which led to the overwhelming igbo influence in the ekpeye language, then why are there no english words in the ekpeye language as there are Igbo? English is taught/used in virtually all churches in the south so why isnt english overshadowing the "original" ekpeye language more than Igbo? lol

I was so curious about where the hell you're getting your information from. What year exactly was igbo taught in ekpeye schools and churches? Didn't know there were school where only igbo was spoken and all materials were wriiten in Igbo. Also, just curious to why english did not dominate your language more than "igbo" did since it is used way more that Igbo in nigeria? I remember ikwere tried that say story but it fell flat with no proof whatsoever of an existing language before their igbo/igboid dialect. I dont know, maybe you have facts.

Also I find it funny that only the words that are Igbo seem to be "imported". why is that?  I remember you mentioning something about the benin kingdom, that is another excuse many use to get out of being "igbo". I hope you do realize that the Benin Kingdom was not a "race" but a "kingdom" which included various ethnic groups such as Igbo, Yoruba, Bini, Esan,Ishekiri, Ijo,etc.  If you go to each of the ancesterial lands of these groups, the areas that were effected by the benin expansion have peculiar dialectical differences to the rest who where "untouched". Your claims aren't making any sense maybe you can clarify, and with facts.

Igbos don't have an International airport.Delta State is not an "Igbo state". Rivers State is not an "Igbo state". Enugu is an "Igbo state"; it is the capital of Igboland. In fact, the Igbos dont have an international airport until the Kanu Ibiam airport is up and running. I don't see any marginalisation going on their. Okorocha to terminate N18b Imo bond deal, embarks on reforms

Wednesday, 06 July 2011 00:00 From Charles Ogugbuaja News - National

CITING heavy interest rate, Governor Rochas Okorocha has disclosed plan by his government to terminate the agreement on an N18 billion bond secured from financial institutions by the immediate past administration of Ikedi Ohakim.

Ohakim secured the bond a few years ago for the construction of Oguta Motel and Conference Centre.

The governor approved implementation of the N18,000 minimum wage for workers in the state, saying that it is still not sufficient given the high cost of living in the country.

Briefing journalists at the Government House Owerri, Okorocha expre-ssed regret that the past administration allegedly subjected the state to the bond, leading to government paying N1.6 billion yearly as interest.    .

According to him, about N13 billion is remaining from the bond whereas not much has taken place on the site.

“We have a problem with that. We asked the bond people to take it. This is to save Imo from paying N1.6 billion yearly”, the governor said.

The 10,000 jobs offered by the immediate past administration, he said, have been suspended and are undergoing review because there were no 10,000 job vacancies in the state, stressing that the last government used it as a political tool. He said that after review, those who merited it would be engaged in proper in areas of need.

Also not satisfied that the state government injected N430 million for renovation of the Imo Concorde Hotel, Owerri and leased it to a Lebanese firm, Rhas Construction Company, about eight years ago, Okorocha announced the sack of the company from handling the leased agreement.

On the industrial layout located on the outskirts of Owerri (Onitsha Road), the governor said he was not satisfied with what some industrialists are doing there and has, therefore, revoked the plots of land in the area.

Also, the governor announced compulsory leave with pay for all the executive secretaries of education in order to make way for reforms in the education sector, including full implementation of the free education programme of his administration.

In carrying all those sweeping decisions, Okorocha said he followed the laid down legal procedures.

According to him, a judicial panel has been set up by his government on all abandoned and on-going projects.

“Judicial panel has been set up for all projects, on-going and abandoned, in Imo. It is not to witch-hunt anybody”, he said.

The governor expressed dissatisfaction with the performance of about 13,000 teachers and 3,000 workers of the State Basic Education Board (SUBEB), which he said, has led to lack of progress and dilapidation of primary and secondary schools’ structures.

According to Okorocha, N100 million would be received by each of the 27 local councils every month for maintenance of the buildings and provision of equipment for the schools.

He said the permanent secretaries, House of Representatives and House of Assembly members and government appointees from the areas would jointly manage the funds.

He said there were problems with four institutions in the state: Imo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (ISOPADEC), SUBEB, Imo Transport Company (ITC) and the Imo State Independent Electoral Commission (ISIEC), promising that his government would tackle the challenges.

Okorocha empowers royal fathers

Published on 05 July 2011

EMMA OGU, Owerri

Imo state governor Owelle Rochas Okorocha has increased the powers of traditional rulers in the state with new responsibilities backed up with new salary structure and welfare package.

Under the arrangement, traditional rulers are now governors and chief security officers in their respective communities under Okorocha’s 4th tier of government called community government. The royal fathers will also coordinate the activities of vigilante groups and take responsibilities of developing the alternative dispute resolution strategy meant to decongest the courts of over crowded cases.

For these new roles the governor announced that the royal fathers will henceforth be given security votes while their salaries have been increased by the government.

Chief Okorocha who disclosed this yesterday at a breakfast meeting with journalists in the state however, warned that no traditional ruler is allowed to live outside his community and anyone who decides to live outside his community must appoint a regent and handover his staff of office to him at his own risk. He further warned that any royal father whose communitiy is found to be harbouring criminals stand the risk of losing his staff of office.

He also stated that traditional rulers henceforth are not allowed to issue chieftaincy titles to people without the approval of the government. According to him, all title holders will now under go recertification in the state. The measure he said is to stem the tide of frivolous and mockery titles being issued by traditional rulers adding that government will investigate any one to be given title to know what he has done to merit the title
.

The governor further said that no traditional ruler is allowed to go to police station for purposes of securing bail for detained suspects even as no traditional ruler will speak English in public function as a way of promoting our language and culture.

He explained that the alternative dispute resolution practice in our communities has become very necessary not only to decongest our courts but to promote peace and harmony among the people even as the system in tandem with our culture and tradition which is based on amicable way of settling disputes.

"We have discovered that any time any of our people go to court they come back enemy for life but any time communities intervene in dispute they come back hugging themselves. We increased the salary of traditional rulers to motivate them and increase the strength of 4th tier of government which make them governor of their various communities".

The number one citizen of the state also explained that the recent dissolution of the state council of traditional rulers headed by Eze Cletus Ilomuanya was done in good faith and for the purposes of sanitizing the traditional institution which he said was almost going down the drain and becoming so actively political to the extent that the royal fathers lost their bearing.

He said: "It got to a stage where you can no longer differentiate the traditional ruler from a politician. We need to restore the dignity of traditional institution as custodian of culture".

Meanwhile, Okorocha announced a non refundable deposit of N1 million for any group that is seeking autonomous community. He said already the state has six hundred traditional rulers with people still yearning for new communities. He said the non refundable fee of N1 million is not even a guarantee that such community will be created upon payment as government will also look at conditions for autonomous communities including population and economic viability.

On the ten thousand job programme of Ikedi Ohakim administration which his government suspended, the governor said the exercise is being reviewed and only those who were really give job will be asked to go back to their positions but noted that there is no factory or ministry in the state today that can take ten thousand job.

He said his government has approved the eighteen thousand naira minimum wage for workers while a back to land programme meant for agricultural revolution will be launched to create jobs for the youths.

Jonathan shuns talks on Islamic banking. •Only court can stop us —Sanusi

Published on 05 July 2011

CLEMENT NWOJI, Abuja

President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday shunned the parley organised by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on Islamic banking.

This was as CBN governor, Mallam Lamido Sanusi dammed the series of criticisms which have greeted his recent moves to establish Islamic banking in the country, saying that only court can stop him from going ahead with it.

An indication of President Goodluck Jonathan not wanting to be associated with the controversy of the Islamic banking and its variant model played out yesterday as he declined to either be physically present or send a representative to deliver a keynote address as scheduled at the International Conference on Non-Interest (Islamic) banking in Abuja.

Also, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Finance, Mr Daniel Kifasi who was hurriedly co-opted by the CBN Governor to deliver the President’s speech even openly denied representing the President.

In his remarks, Kifasi denied that he was representing the President, explaining that he made efforts to get clarifications from the President but was locked out of the Villa gate.

However, Sanusi took time to trace the evolution of non-interest Islamic banking in the country, citing specifically that, in addition to Jaiz International Bank that had applied for and obtained CBN approval in principle to operate non-interest Islamic banking with regional authorisation in the country, other banks that have indicated interest to open Islamic banking windows include, Stanbic IBTC Bank Limited and Standard Chartered Bank Limited.

But against the spate of criticisms, the CBN Governor said "Anybody who feels Islamic banking is illegal should go to a court of law because it is the only institution that decides if something is illegal or not.

"If the court says it is illegal, we will stop it. But we don’t think the court will say so because we know it is constitutional and within the realm of the law."

He said whereas Stanbic IBTC Bank Limited had actually applied to the CBN to be given an approval in principle to operate an Islamic banking window, Standard Chartered Bank has informed the governor of its intention to submit an application to also open an Islamic banking window in the near future.

He traced the genesis of the Islamic banking saying: "The first major effort to operate Islamic banking services in Nigeria was in 1996 when the then Habib Bank sought and obtained CBN approval to operate Islamic banking model.

"Another application was received in 2007, when the CBN granted operational licence in principle to Jaiz International Bank to operate as a full-fledged non-interest banking institution. Unfortunately, the bank could not take off due to introduction of new capital requirements by the CBN.

"However, following the release of the new banking model in Nigeria, the proposed bank re-applied to CBN for a licence to operate as a non-interest Islamic bank with regional authorisation.

"The bank has been given an approval in principle and is expected to comply with the requirements for the grant of final licence to commence operations before the end of December. Also, Stanbic IBTC, a conventional bank, has applied and I am pleased to announce that it has been given an approval in principle to operate an Islamic banking window.

"Other prospective promoters and banks have also indicated interest to operate Islamic banks or windows and offer interest-free products and services. Indeed, Standard Chartered Bank has informed the Governor of its intention to submit an application to also open an Islamic banking window in the near future."

Also speaking, the Deputy Governor, Financial Systems Stability (FSS) of the CBN, Dr. Kingsley Muoghalu said the CBN had approached the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) for capacity building and technical assistance towards the realisation of an Islamic banking culture in Nigeria.

He said the idea of approaching IDB was predicated on the fact that Nigeria lacked the skills, legal and technical competences to operate Islamic banking earlier in the years.

Moghalu said non-interest banking has over $1 trillion in global assets and is growing at a rate of 15 to 20 per cent annually.

He said Nigeria decided to operate non-interest banking based on the fact that about 56 per cent of adult Nigerians are un-banked and there was the need to bring this number of Nigerians into the nation’s financial system.

Non-interest banking has undergone progressive evolution in the last four decades to become a dynamic and a new form of financial intermediation in the global financial system. It is being operated in about 475 institutions in at least 75 countries around the world, including major financial markets like London, Malaysia, Singapore and Hong Kong.

The appeal of this banking model comprise of introduction of diverse financial products and services, progressive in development and regulatory guidelines etc.

that is why we need to be careful about all this media people

fulani/hausa/kanuri are indigeous kaduna(north or south), abuja, nigeri, plateau, ebonyi, parts of kwara and kogi,  edo, nasawarra and the core states

so when the fulani fight back because they were being killed first or there cattles that they have breeded for generation are killed, they do it out of annoyance

not because they want to kill or anything but the so called farm lands can not be seen, the middle belt iis an open field where u would just see some people claiming lands

some of this fulanis great great grand father have been passing this route before the so called tivs, beroms and co started claiming this lands
Fulanis are also indigenous to America. They were there way before the "native americans"(not acually natives but intruders of fulani land). In the 19th century they were used by the brits to raid remaining native american settlements/villages. After the job was done, they were sold to Arab traders. The arab traders introduced them to islam and converted them to muslims. The fulani were later freed and made their way down to africa from saudia arabia causing havic and making the natives into fulanis. The fulanis that settle in what is called nigeria today once own the whole land until of course, these sub-humans of sea origin  finished their final stages of evolution and how out of the bight of Benin/Biafra sea and started attacking the fulanis. The fulanis had to retreat while these different but related sub-humans laid claim to various parts of fulani land. The Hausas and Kanuris are actual hybrid fulani.<---- There is the story, for anyone whoever wanted the lowdown. wink
