I have heard too many nonsense talk about how to build Dubai and Los Angeles in Southeast. Truth is that those talks are either deliberately deceitful, or folks don't know a thing about how great cities evolve. The foundation of every great city isn't necessarily building skyscrapers from day one, but adequately planning the city very well to ensure development occurs evenly and future developments can still occur without destroying the city. Roads and use of roundabouts at every road intersection is critical. Many new African and Asian cities already know this and build new areas of their cities with lots of roundabouts to compensate for lack of power to operate traffic lights as we see in American cities. The plan below should be adopted as a model for city expansion. By the way, this is Palmas which is the capital city of the state of Tocantins, Brazil. This is their city extension plan and you can see their generous use of roundabouts. This is how Southeast cities should plan new areas for expansion.

spyder880:Oga Spyder, Biko, is it true that IBETO Cement is no longer in the market? So Buhari's regime truly closed down that company due to the suit of Aliko Dangote to wipe out any competition and become a monopoly in cement sector in Nigeria? So why are you builders still buying his cement after all these brazen plots? Please respond to my initial question if Ibeto cement is truly no longer in the market. Thanks. |
ChimaAdeoye:Just wanted to remind us of this post. They should give the airport a proper taxiway and concession it to allow more flights

Yyeske:Failure to BAN Okada is one of the worst things that has happened to Anambra urban centers especially Onitsha, Nnewi and Awka! Looking at all the southern states of Nigeria, not even ONE allow their people to be exposed to the hazard of being transported with Okada EXCEPT Anambra! Okadao killing and maiming Anambra people has been a hallmark of bad and ineffective governments of the past which needs to be rectified to bring the state at par with modern means of public transportation in it's key cities. Okada should be banned from Onitsha, Awka and Nnewi and the least permissible form of mass transportation should be a tricycle! It is also a shame that states and cities such as Abakaliki mocked in the past for allowing Okada ruin it have since banned okada as a form of mass transportation and Keke has made those cities sane and liveable. I don't want to mention Owerri or Enugu, those were one of the first progressive cities in the East. Even Abia state also banned Okada EXCEPT Anambra! Suffice to say that even cities in Northern Nigeria, Kano,Kaduna,Sokoto,Maiduguri, Bauchi, Minna, Katsina etc have all banned use of okada as a means of transporting their people, yet a progressive state like Anambra still uses okada as means of public transportation? Okada has been a bad call and the continued use of this extremely dangerous form of public transportation is causing so much untimely deaths and making Anambra cities to always appear like the worst rowdy places in the world. These sorts of images below has since ceased to exist in many Nigerian cities since 2009 except in Anambra! Keke is the way to go. It is not perfect, but at least its safer and also more economically viable for the rider to make a good living from it because it can take 3 passengers in one trip where okada take one passenger on the same amount of fuel. Pregnant women or mothers with little children can always board safely. Unlike okada which has continued to kill our people and nobody in government house Awka seems to care because it is not their wives or children that are dying..

spyder880:Truth is that a poorly educated brick layer can build a mansion with Cement, but it requires a higher skill set to do same with wood. Besides, Sheetrock isn't available in Nigeria, so how do you finish the walls? Not to mention that we don't have enough wood to go round in Nigeria. Did i mention the problem of termites? in our country where we can't even control mosquitoes, is it termites we can control like oyinbo is able to do ? Imagine if you built a wooden house in the village and by the next Christmas, the whole thing collapse to the ground due to termite activity. On too many levels, it is not even desirable to think of wooden houses in Nigeria. It's just not practicable for our environment. One thing i think we can do to bring down construction cost is to begin local manufacture of sinks, wash-hand basins, bath-tubs and toilets with reinforced plastics. I know many countries are already doing this. This will help reduce the cost of these inputs. Only caveat is that the plastic bath is usually supported on all sides with a short wall as in the picture. But that is a small price to pay for using our own home made building materials. I'm sure Oga spyder can always make up such short walls to support the bath tub and tile it neatly as in the picture.

Dremca:GBAM! When i see those elevated tanks, i'm gladdened that Nigerians finally found a way out of the perennial water scarcity issue by providing their own water than wait for government cursed water works. If rooftop Solar panels would allow Nigerians to enjoy power at home without noisy generators and stress of fueling and servicing them, half of the problems of living in Nigeria will indeed be solved. Imagine cooking soup once a month and it will be fresh every time because your freezer is always frozen. Best part is that sunlight is renewable and will always produce more electricity for you the next day. So you will NEVER run out of fuel or suffer fuel scarcity as generators. |
spyder880:Beautiful! This is golf estate right? Not centenary & golf city o! That one is still metamorphosing. ![]() |
mktinsight:In the past we used to have fire extinguisher in cars and homes for people cooking with gas. It is a good practice i know may fire incidents that were quickly arrested because people quickly grabbed fire extinguishers both from their cars and homes to stop the fire. I thought road safety used to insist on fire extinguishers in cars. I believe the landlords of the multi-flat buildings who have vested interest not to lose their building to fire should tax every tenant N1000 naira every year to buy or update the fire extinguisher and place it in a locked iron cage along or under the staircase so that everyone knows where it is in case of emergency, but nobody can easily steal it because it is in an iron cage.

stephenduru:We should PLEASE allow Boko Haram to create their caliphate and stop killing people! |
My visit to Awka Diocese
Those who say grass, trees and flowers can't be grown in our home environment, yet they grow freely in the bush all over the SE should ask themselves why the missions are able to have clean environment with landscaping. How are they able to grow flowers, trees and grass in the same environment which government buildings are always unable to grow?? That is why i love anything touched by the missions. They do everything with love and perfection. |
ChimaAdeoye:I am still unable to understand why states like Anambra or Delta or Kogi should not be leading in fish production in Nigeria. Yet states as Bornu will produce more fish than these states living among the rivers. All those riverine communities in Ayamelum LGA, Anambra North, Ogbaru etc can actually do large scale fish farms like these. Their closeness to the River Niger will help with water supply for the fish ponds. I just think there needs to be a serious investor to seriously invest in a fish farm and produce smoked fish at affordable prices.

Igboid:GBAM! I 100% agree with you. Some of them coming here have mischievous ulterior motive. I was in a thread and suddenly out of nowhere one of the guys that i have now confirmed to be Fulani said "Abakaliki people" are inferior. That quickly thread the thread to the dogs. When i researched his previous posts, i realized he was indeed either Hausa or Fulani pretending to be Igbo. These people have not a single positive or good wish for anyone who isn't from their group. That is why i HATE Nigeria so much. |
InyinyaAgbaOku:The building should not be completed and left abandoned until whenever there is an igbo meeting. They should keep it in constant use by allowing people use it for wedding reception and other social events for a small fee. That way, the facilities are kept alive and the area constantly cleaned. |
Xander85:Oga just spell it out as Lagos - Ibadan. All these shortcuts, i almost thought this was a picture of construction in LI, Italy. I wanted to scream it was fake, this wasn't Italy until it occurred to me you must have meant Lagos - Ibadan! |
wencesolo:They should use the cement to build a bridge there. |
Xander85:Atlanta, Georgia, i truly miss you. A beautiful city like many others in USA. The key take away is LANDSCAPING combined with good architecture is what makes a true mansion. When you build the BEST architectural masterpiece without flowers and trees, you have built an ugly concrete jungle. Which is what makes many homes in nigeria look distasteful despite the huge sums used in their construction. EXCEPT in Abuja and parts of Ikoyi where houses are adorned with adequate flowers and trees to beautify them into true mansions. While keeping the environment rich in oxygen and protecting the soil |
asha80:If you check the heaviest rain-forest belt of the world, parts of Igboland to Central Africa and IndoChina areas have the highest rainfall. It makes sense that there areas are not left without vegetation cover else the whole land will be washed off. Our people rarely understand the principle of runoff leading to erosion and the need to prevent runoff on bare earth surfaces. Anywhere there is a flood plane with a concrete base to prevent leaching and runoff, will eventually turn into a big erosion site over a few years of the same thing repeating. Each time we see flood water as brown or reddish in our clime, somebody's land is being washed off somewhere along the path of that flood water. Landscaping isn't just for aesthetics, it is to protect the very land where your building stands. I truly wish our people will understand the nature of their environment and plant more trees. |
horsepower101:I also watched that video and searched for use of solar power around the world. The will be the next thing bigger than oil in Nigeria. Once we figure out the right battery sizes to store the electricity to cover well for night usage. Surprisingly, even countries like Australia with some of the cheapest electricity bills have high and growing use of solar powered home electricity systems!
|
OreMI22:Yes! Properly connecting the batteries in series is key to getting maximum power from them. You are right, for now, the Solar panels may just be for a few household items such as one TV, cable box, one or two fans, water pump, refrigerator/freezer and a few energy efficient light bulbs. Until more powerful solar panels are available in the market. I also think homes can begin to run a different electrical wiring for Solar to make sure it is carrying only those key items and therefore conserving the power. Nonetheless, the solar technology is a welcome relief from noisy generators/ stress of buying fuel and maintaining generators and will keep one's food from spoiling due to prolonged power outage in Nigeria. Especially in the villages where there may be no filling stations close-by.

arinzeejikonye:I don't know why it's so hard for these cheap contractors to appreciate that flowers and trees convert a concrete, prison looking structure into a conducive home environment. They will spend the same amount in construction, due to poor finishing without flowers,Paint color, their structure always look mediocre meant for a cheap hood. They should go to Abuja and see how luxury flats are built and the environment lavished with flowers. Hopefully, they will still plant flowers and make the flats look like luxury apartments after they beef up the environment with flowers and trees. Right now, the fact they will finish the area without any consideration to plant flower and trees to beautify, makes the concrete structure very very ugly. Another ugly concrete crap.

TundeBricklayer:nifex ( http://www.nifexlimited.com) shows promise, but i don't know if they are serious. Sometimes, people float companies for other reasons than to produce anything. I hope they are serious about producing steel products as rods and flat sheet panel. They also said they are exploring possibility of a cement factory. Truly we need a facility that can produce all types of steel required for building and other purposes like the former Niger Steel did

FINALLY, Enugu Centenary & Golf City now selling! I must buy a home there. It promises to be the few places to live inside Nigeria with facilities almost equal to a home abroad. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cFEJPEDsdJQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c-nIk4INT6Y https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RW_5Wey9a04 |
Hopefully soon, we can have bright minds figure how to make billions of naira through manufacturing or importing high quality solar panels to make them a standard installation in each home. We also nned battery manufacturers in the country to stop focusing on only car batteries and begin manufacturing some heavy duty batteries for homes Solar Electricity. Just as we now have boreholes as standard installation for water supply and GSM are standard for telephones. Depending on government to provide power is like waiting on NITEL to provide functional telephones.

DawatNama:GBAM @ bolded above. You cannot expect to retain wealth if you don't produce what you consume massively. Apart from massive effort to be self reliant in AGRICULTURE, I wish entrepreneurs and SE regional government will focus on three key industries 1. Steel rolling plant or revive Niger Steel 2. Cement producing plant or revive NigerCem 3. Solar Panel and Super Heavy duty batteries to hold charge for weeks. Our forefathers understood very well the key to development and set up those key companies in combination with massive effort in Agriculture. Little wonder the economy of Eastern Region was the fastest growing in the world then. It should be done again.

spyder880:In our circumstance, it makes every sense to build at least 4 - 5 storey building to provide decent commercial accommodation in a land tight area. Without these buildings, the type of slums in the SE will be unimaginable. Government should do their role to make sure solid access roads and trees are planted in these areas. Also removal of all illegal shacks not part of any build must continue to prevent slumming of the environment by street traders. For Water supply in high density neighborhoods, the idea of neighborhood or street by street boreholes system can be used to ensure adequate water is available in the area. Let landlords and tenants in each street or neighborhood come together and since a community borehole and then pipe water from a big steel overhead tank to all the houses in the area or in the street. The people will pay little water bill which is used to maintain the area and employ somebody that ensures water is never empty in the overhead tank. I agree electricity should be seriously thought about. I have seen many families often buy a small solar panel unit enough to carry water pumping machine and one freezer, one ceiling fan and a few bulbs. It is a good start. At least people's food will not be going bad when there is prolonged power failure and fuel scarcity. We need to source better solar panels that can comfortably carry every home appliance. It is there in the market and needs to have professionals install them. Just as GSM revolutionized telephone in Nigeria, Roof-top Solar panels will be the game changer for the lives of an average Nigeria to provide uninterrupted power supply. |
0monnak0da:Wrong! It belongs to Urhobo people. You were right not to mention Yoruba ![]() Although today, every tailor in Onitsha is yoruba! |
horsepower101:GBAM! This is not just an urgent need for recreation, it is need in creating a Central Business District area where at least 5-8 storey buildings and hotels can be built. It may be too late to do that in Ose Okwuodu area, But along Atani roead and Up 33 and Nsugbe areas, the Government should capture a large expanse of land and begin allocating the plots to corporations and organizations willing to build a corporate office in the region. To make the place easily accessible, a dual carriage road must connect the area to the 33 (Onitsha-Aguleri road). They can develop a massive virgin area of water front and take time to plan it well to have resorts and corporate offices. And well connected to Onitsha and Awka by dualized roads. Eko Atlantic city was exactly a dream like that which great men had the guts to put a few processes in motion to launch it. That is the type of spirit needed here to provide a modern business district in the Southeast similar to what is obtainable in developed countries. It may not materialize in 10 years, but if the ROAD into the area are built and the plots around the area allocated, it will gradually begin to take shape in time.

Digitron:Beautiful! The State Government should contact the World Health Organization and get into partnership about how to help equip the laboratory to become the WHO diagnostic lab for the region. This will help bring equipment and professional lab scientists to help train the local manpower. WHO Global Laboratory strengthening project: http://www.who.int/ihr/lyon/hls/en/ contact: Dr Sébastien Cognat, email: cognats@who.int Alternatively contact American CDC Global Health: https://www.cdc.gov/globalhealth/healthprotection/fieldupdates/winter-2017/joint-external-evaluation.html This will help in their project to track diseases worldwide by equipping the lab to be capable of testing for all types of cancer, Ebola and other hard to diagnose conditions. UNTH and other teaching hospitals in the zone can also send specimens to the lab for accurate diagnosis instead of sending specimens to India for diagnosis of cancers and other conditions |
