Dockaysworld:
Warri boy who smashed waec and jamb denied admission.

David okorogheye, the delta state boy who floored his jamb and waec with 336 and 9A1's respectively has been denied admission into the university of lagos to study medicine, on the ground of his young age.
.
The 15-year-old who stunned the general public by his outstanding performance, was not allowed to take part in the post UTME exams, he has been asked to try again next year when he comes of age.
.

Efforts to contact relevant authorities as to whether he could be considered for special admission has proved abortive as authorities say the law must be followed.

The lad however has come to terms with the surrounding suituations and says he will wait for the next year's admission.

According to sun news, David who hopes to become a neurosurgeon, had his passion activiated when he watched doctors battle to save the life of his late father when he was 8 years old, and since then vowed to study medicine so he can save lives.
.
With his father late, david is currently been sponsored by his mother and family members who are proud of him.

He can get scholarship abroad. He should make the right contacts.
Would have helped, but I'm seriously busy at the moment.
I wish him all the best.

I wish some people can write something good about the healthcare system in Nigeria, or doctors in particular. Most times it is the negative aspect that is promoted in social media for the public.
Health › Re: Do Doctors' Hippocratic Oath Count? My Experience With A Doctor by Cmanforall:
I commend your efforts
Gracesofar:
Hi nairalanders, though this happened last month and I still can't find a way to get over it. But the thought was triggered and I had a flashback to it vividly after I read a ladies post here on nairalanders who spoke about her experience with doctors.

Anyway, Being a doctor might be just more than a profession since they are believed more to save lives. But do they really do that. Apart from the bossy act of most doctors Talking of JOHESU vs NMA and them wanting to boss everyone around, I was want to share my experience of how I finally lost hope In doctors which also pointed out that the so-called Hippocratic oath means nothing to most of them.

I was on an official assignment to Lagos that was 3 weeks ago if I can still recollect vividly. And after the whole assignment etc, I was done and around 8pm I decided to leave Lagos back to Enugu. I was with a colleague so who set out and after passing Arepo (very near berger) I think the town name is Magboro. I wanted to park and probably get fruits to aide me she. I heard a loud thud and low and behold the car behind me hit a man trying to cross the express road. The car (a minibus) was on top speed and the impact even confused me on what was happening. I parked and I saw people rush to drag the lifeless man from the fast lane so other cars won't run him over and I was still frozen where I was. This was a middle age man lifeless on the ground with blood gushing out of him. Anyway trust Nigerians some brought out their mobile etc and other were pouring water on the blood dripping man. But I was still socked and confused. Finally, I knew the man will give up the ghost finally if he didn't receive medical attention on time. So I spoke to my colleague and we went to meet the gathering crowds and decided to help this man. We don't even know anywhere around so we just asked if anyone knows a nearby hospital and hell yeah there will always be a good Samaritan out of every 12. Anyway, we but this man in my car and with 2 other strangers showing us the route we started drubuing towards the nearest hospital in an attempt to save this complete stranger live. Getting to the hospital after much blood was on my car seat we took this man out and called the doctor in charge of the private hospital which I can't even remember the name but I know its very close to Access International School in Magboro very close to ibafo Ogun state.

Upon the doctor seeing him, he asked who the famiky so we just explained and I realise his countenance changed. He said he can't attend to him without a family member there. I never knew what the doctor meant because to me the only set of people hospitals don't attend to is bullet wound victims and at least they must give first aid.

That's how the doctor started talking that who will foot the bill etc. That he will give him treatment bla bla bla. I got so angry and I asked him if his money is more essential than a fellow human live. Anyway I told him I had no cash but if they use pos, I will deposit all the money he needs because am still going to Enugu that night. Looking at the time its to 9. The doctor said they only do cash payment etc and he can't take him in without getting some payment to start it. My colleague asked if he accept bank transfer he said No just cash. Haba I got annoyed and I sowed him my ID card when he realised am a military personnel he lower his tone of talking and he said he his sorry they don't even have any spare bed or the medications to stabilize him. Haba anyway ouyt of annoyance I issued him threat that I don't even know the man from genesis am just doing my own to save humanity. I realised he was too money conscious so I told him to Bleep off. We put the man in my car again and went to another private hospital. Getting their we had almost same issue. And to cut the long story short he doctyor didn't even give him first aide or try stabilizing him. He just said I should get a government hospital around. I was so frustrated and I loosed hope in doctors that night over been money conscious not minding an innocent life paying the price with something less than 50k. Fast forward one of the boys said he knew a government clinic at the other side. And we drove their as at then it was almost 10 at this time this man was still breathing though very slowly and he was loosing lots of blood. Anyway we got to the government hospital where I can't even describe. And I was told to write a statement etc. And before the man would be stabilized, he gave up the ghost that night.

Though have seen people die and I don't feel any way bad but that made me feel so demoralized. I'd only the first two private bastard called doctors can take him in, he will still be alive. I left the hospital and they said they will bag him etc.

Anyway that night I started my journey to Enugu and till today, my hatred for doctors hisnjust so mega even though my fiancee is a medical student.

This is a true life story that happened 3 Saturdays ago if only I was thinking straight enough to get the hospitals name
You don't need to hate doctors, and BTW your fiancee will soon become one. So there's some love there in you for doctors. Additionally, doctors and military and the paramilitary cooperate very well. Having said the above, what you witnessed is just a show of the deplorable state of our healthcare system. In the previous post bashing doctors, someone mentioned about using 5% or so of our national budget to run the healthcare sector (against a minimum recommendation of 15% by African Union), that every sector cannot get all they need.
It is unfortunate for the accident victim, and I can guess the doctors you met in those private hospitals (at night) were jnr doctors and not necessarily the owners of the hospital. Meaning they take instructions from the boss,as you would from a General. The doctors you might be 'hating' may actually be empathetic but cannot do much due to the PRIVATE hospital POLICY. I guess that's why you were directed to a government hospital. Also there could have been past experiences of abandoning bodies in the hospital without any trace of relatives. This can pose health risks especially when the hospital has no morgue or preservation methods.
There's a way out of this kind of situations and which can also make hospitals treat patients with or without deposits. And that is HEALTH INSURANCE. Everybody should have a health insurance, either from your working place or privately. OP, if you had brought an army or uniform man, he would be given treatment because if something eventually happens and he couldn't survive, the army or police will still pay the bills, right? That uniform alone is showing you the way insurance can work if the hospital's know that their resources and efforts will be rewarded.
Again, I feel sorry for the deceased/family commend your efforts that night. Do not hate any healthworker. The healthcare sector needs reform.

MissJoy29:
Thank you sir.

Nobody knows about these points listed here & how the government is large lying at fault more than I do. You know why? I'm an educationist. The neglect there just like in the health sector affects everyone. But I will not excuse any teacher who feels he/she still wants to do her job irrespective of the decay in the sector to do a haphazard job.
In other words, the little ones you have to do within your capacity, do it well.

I know doctor-patient ratio is very high. But does that mean a patient shouldn't be adequately catered for? Most teachers in government schools work their asses off too. due to work load. But I won't excuse that teacher for trying to cut corners to make things easier for him or her but affects everyone on the long run.

The thing is, a lot of doctors are just in the profession because they think it's a fast & legal way to make money. They are not passionate. That's my take.
I feel the pains of our teachers and the deplorable state of our education sector. If given the opportunity, I will make the teaching profession (primary and secondary ) the highest paid in the country.
According to your last paragraph, I don't think it is wrong to choose a profession and get trained in line with the profession for a legally financial stability. However, it is totally wrong not to work in line with the ethics and practice of the chosen profession.

If every sector is allocated recommended % of National budget I doubt if health will get one kobo before the available % is exhausted. How about making judicious use of the 7% allocated, I can attest 5% will be lost / consumed / wasted to corruption abi all those doctor making noise for 15% are not Nigerians.
I don't understand you. But let me pretend to.
15% is the minimum which was agreed on in our dear country by the African Union. Yet it has never been achieved since 2001.
Talking about % allocation for different sectors, every sector should get the required %, however if it is not feasible, the sectors that are delapidating to avoid collapse of the nation in general, should be given priority.
Fo rinstance, education, security and health should be top of the country's priority at the moment.

I will give you detailed response soon. I sympathize with some of your experiences
MissJoy29:
I just hope this writing will be able to adequately capture my frustration, disappointment & dissatisfaction with the Nigeria Medical Doctors in particular & the Health sector in general.
I also apologise in advance for the long post.

For as long as I can remember, I have always been sceptical about going to hospitals. The attitude of the health workers there are nothing to write home about. Both the private and the public hospitals. Even though I still believe that public hospitals are far better than the private hospitals(especially the average ones) in terms of quality service(although you run the risk of dying before you are attended to due to how slow they are).

There are so many anomalies in our hospitals. I have seen & heard really bizzare stuffs going on. From the nonchalant, impatient and highly unprofessional attitude of the attendants, the unhealthy environment, the cranky and harsh attitude of the nurses, the fact that there's also "who you know mentality" when lives are at stake, the subtle way they bill you unnecessarily by paying for almost everything you do in the hospital(consultation fee, file retrieval fee, unit fee, buying of this & that for your treatment that you will end up leaving for them), the lack of medical equipment, the walking up & down paying for one thing or another at different times(even when you are not fit)instead of paying at once, the number of unqualified & seasoned doctors, the location of a hospital's laboratory on the last floor of a three-storey building(like, who does that!!!!), the high cost of drugs and other medical supplies in the hospital's pharmacy as opposed to their cost outside etc.

But I have a particular area I want to focus on.

THE ATTITUDE OF THE NIGERIAN DOCTOR
This thread was born out of my experiences this week at a teaching hospital. These experiences brought back all the others I have had to push to the back of my mind a long time ago for lack of an appropriate channel to express them. For the purpose of this thread, I'm going to use my experiences at ABSUTH (Abia State Teaching Hospital), LASUTH (Lagos State Teaching Hospital), LUTH (Lagos University Teaching Hospital), National Orthopaedic Hospital Igbobi & few private hospitals as yardsticks to buttress my grievances. I'm also going to put into consideration, the attitude of my close friends who are medical personnels.

Note: I'm not here to compare hospitals. I'm only using them to show that the attitudes of the doctors I met there may actually be same(or at least, almost same) with all of them in the country.

Firstly, if I have met 15 medical doctors, only 1 turned out to be sympathetic and humane. Apart from my family doctors and this sympathetic doctor, I don't think I will ever recognise any of the doctors I have seen again. But after 5 years or so, I still recognised him when I saw him again recently at same hospital(and I have memory problems) Why? He was probably the first doctor I ever saw who actually listened cos they WANT TO not cos they HAVE TO. There's a big difference. Most of them just hear you. They don't listen & they don't allow you talk. That's why they ask you questions based on what THEY THINK you feel & not on what you KNOW you feel.

Secondly, these doctors (except my humane doctor) make it look as if they are doing you a favour when they tell you about your ailment. It's as if they want you to pay consultation fees before they explain in details what you are passing through. What am I saying? One actually told me that! Inasmuch as I think majority of them don't actually know their profession that well, I still wonder why they choose to withhold & hoard information. It's bad enough they don't tell on their own without being asked. But it's even worse they withhold when asked. I have recurring ear ache that comes like every 2 years. This time around I asked the doctor (on the advice of a friend) what the cause of the problem is so I can avoid it. And he opened his mouth & said to me, "get solution first. What do you need the cause for? I was stunned to say the least!
Thirdly, they are always very harsh & impatient. You come in to a doctor's office, 30 seconds later, you are out with a piece of paper filled with their illegible writing just cos they are more concerned with what they are scribbling based on what they THINK you are going through than on what you are actually saying. They are hurrying to see as many patients as possible to collect as much money from them as possible and also to go to their private clinics. So no adequate time allocated to a patient.

Again, because of the attitude of some of these doctors, I'm really not surprised why I detest private hospitals because majorly, they are still the ones that establish it. The main reason why I hardly go to private hospitals is because I don't understand why someone will be, say an E.N.T doctor in a public hospital, but will end up being a GENERAL practitioner in his/her private hospital. They are now automatic Ob/gyn, optometrist, dentists, surgeons, paediatricians etc. I can't count the number of times they have mistreated cases they are supposed to refer to specialists like professionals do.

After venting like this, I'd like to hear from the house. Knowing that people in the medical profession are supposed to be warm, humane, sympathetic, kind, friendly, patient, a listener, polite, knowledgeable, seasoned, capable etc, why then do you think most Nigerian medical doctors are cold, nonchalant, impatient, unkind, harsh, rude, condescending? Is it because that's who they are normally or are there some things in the sector and/or in the training process that turn & change them into the aforementioned? Doctors in the house & non-doctors like me, over to you.
It's unfortunate that you had some bad experiences with your encounter with some doctors. It is sad to see the deplorable state of the health care system in Nigeria, and yet nothing is done. Budget allocation to health is approximately 7%, against the Abuja declaration to fund healthcare with 15% of annual budget. I am not justifying the poor communication of some doctors, but just giving this for a general view on the healthcare system.
Back to OP, it is good you acknowledged some good encounters with doctors. There's no problem with any doctor asking you questions and listening to make a diagnosis, however one should also be free to express himself even outside the questions posed by the doctor. It would be doubtful to believe any doctor would tell a patient to SHUT UP! while he/she's explaining her symptoms. I am not defending any 'arrogant' or 'boastful' doctor, perhaps it is individualistic, and not professional, and shouldn't be!
OP, from your story, I can imagine you have been mostly seeking tertiary healthcare services (teaching hospitals); and the few private hospitals you visited, might as well be run by one of the specialists in the teaching hospitals.
OP, you will agree that the conditions in teaching hospitals are different from private clinics, in terms of patients load, care, etc. A doctor should not rush you out of her clinic despite the long waiting queue, which by the way, you witnessed. Although some people will say they are stressed and worn out, which should also be put into consideration since they are human. It will be nice if patients (some highly-placed/their relatives/journalists etc) also raise these issues for the MD, or whoever that is incharge of recruiting to increase the number of working staff ( nurses etc inclusive). Those guys in teaching hospitals are being overworked. Nigeria falls below the WHO critical line for doctors, nurses and midwives. Simply put, the burden on the healthcare professionals is increasing especially with their massive exodus abroad.

Gisthoodng:
Argentina Legend, Diego Maradona has claimed that Colombia were Robbed in the World Cup round of 16 after England won via penalty shootout on Tuesday.

Harry Kane scored a second half penalty to put England 1-0 ahead only before in-form Yerry Mina to score a stoppage time equaliser for Colombia.

The match went to penalties after Extra-time and England's Jordan Pickford proved to be hero.

He saved Carlos Bacca's penalty before Eric Dier scored to secure England's place in the quarter-finals of the tournament.

But the match ended in controversy with Colombia players insisting Referee Mark Geiger favored England.

Earlier Radamel Falcao blamed Referee Mark Geiger for the defeat which he described "painful".

Now, Maradona has reacted to the controvesy.

“I saw a monumental theft,”he told reporters.

"I apologise to all the Colombian people, but they must know the players are not to blame.

“It is the man who decides who the referee is who is to blame. A man like that (Geiger) should not be put in charge of a game of that magnitude.

“With all due respect, Pierluigi Collina, as the man who designates the referees, he is very bad. He must apologise to the Colombian people.

“I told (FIFA president) Gianni Infantino that if I worked for FIFA, I would change everything. It has to be transparent. That’s why I didn’t go there.

“The referee will know a lot about baseball, but he has no idea about football. The Colombian players asked for VAR and he did not give it to them.

“Twice, the English threw themselves to the ground and he did not admonish them. This was theft.

“The penalty was not a foul.In fact, it was Kane’s fault.

“The referee was looking somewhere else and when he turned his head, Kane was on the floor.

“Kane used his arm to hook Sanchez and then threw himself down.

“I repeat, why didn’t the referee ask for the VAR? Colombia died standing. That’s why I applaud them.”

Sports › Ighalo: 'I Enjoyed Every Bit Of The World Cup' by Cmanforall(op): 6:43pm On Jun 27, 2018
Following the exit of Super Eagles from the ongoing FIFA World Cup in Russia, the Nigerian striker, Odion Ighalo, has taken to his social media to react on the last match against Argentina.
He is thankful to God for no injuries and also thanks God for the situation (pictures attached).
It can be recalled that Ighalo during the tournament is known to disable comments, and only enabled it for a while after Nigerians victory against Iceland. However, to the surprise of many, he enabled comments in this his recent posts. Perhaps waiting to hear Nigerians feelings.

@Lalasticlala, Ighalo don react o smiley

I graduated last month and almost the entire class if not all are planning on taking one foreign licensing exam or the other. Best bet right now is to secure one's future.

I hope they don't get to see another 7-1 thrashing this time.
Coutinho wasn't there then.
I remember arguing back then why he should be in that team after critically analysing his games and style of play. I'm glad the world saw what I saw, and good he's now in their worldcup squad.

This is trash. Wonder how it hit FrontPage @lalasticlala, @seen.

There's no equation here to solve for either x or y. Again, who adds '2' in a squareroot. ..

Maybe just for fun. But this never happened. Quote me!
