Every year tens of thousands of Kenyan women leave the country to work abroad, particularly to Gulf states such as Saudi Arabia,Qatar and Oman where they work as nannies, cooks and house helps. But exploitation and abuse is rife, with many falling victim to trafficking and serious abuse at the hands of fake recruitment agencies and unscrupulous employers. NTV'S Rose Wangui spoke to families who lost their loved ones under unclear circumstances and women who told her about the physical and emotional scars they had experienced while trying to make a living abroad. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jq486zs5X-w&t=2s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HFbxczwAVXM&t=740s |
Before you work in Saudi Arabia Thursday, 08 September 2016 08:31 By Aliyu Smith Almusawi Dear my Sunni brothers, I have just learned that you are submitting your applications in droves to various Sunni mosques in order to get jobs in Saudi Arabia because you were deluded to believe that more than two hundred thousand Shias are sacked and expelled from the country so that they could be supplanted with Sunni brothers, and Sunnis from Nigeria too will be recruited, right? I am sorry to learn that you are marooned on an island of intellectual vacuity because only handfuls of you are aware of the current economic reality in the country and waning hospitality of the country. Besides, you tend to mostly believe every lies that are made against Shias. Well, to be frank, I am powerless to prevent you from making a decision to work in the kingdom. Considering the fact that Buhari has made life virtually unbearable for every citizen, but before you regret your action please understand that: More than ten millions Syrians are displaced by civil war and many of whom are living in the most desolate makeshift camps in Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey. Up to two million Syrians have migrated to the West but despite the monstrosity of the humanitarian crisis, Saudi Arabia has not accommodated a single Syrian even though the country’s trouble was largely sponsored by the KSA and its war-mongering allies. More than half of Yemenis are in danger of starvation as a result of aerial and naval blockades of the country and not a single Yemeni is allowed to live let alone work in the country. If the country’s inhumanity could make it reject its fellow Arabs, how dare you think that Saudi Arabia could welcome black Africans like you? Before you are deceived to get to that country, please remember that the country is one of the most racist countries on earth. Are you aware that it is the incessant tortures of house servants that compelled Indonesia to stop its citizens from working in Saudi Arabia? Are you aware that an Indonesian maid was executed simply because she was accused of negligence when a baby keeled over and died? Are you aware that an Indian woman’s hand was chopped off by a man who accused her of not being good at cooking? Are you aware that menial jobs are the most demeaning jobs that attract paltry wages in the country? Are you aware that thousands of workers from Pakistan, Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka are leaving the country en masse because the country has lost its luster of hospitality? And there was a time that the Pakistani foreign ministry had to evacuate more than three thousands citizens when they could not pay air tickets to return home. I cannot force you not to work in the country, but before you go, please remember that the huge fall in oil price has compelled hundreds of construction companies to retrench workers in large scales because the country construction boom is in decline. Even clerics are not spared: as recently as last week, more than ten thousands imams were told to find jobs because the time of lavish spending and frittering away millions on frivolities are over. Citizens are now forced to work or have their benefit cut. In addition, researches have shown that the citizens are some of the most idle and sedentary citizens on earth devoid of innovation skills and troubled by the glaring danger of idle generation and the way they lag behind Iran when it comes to contributing to their nation’s economic growth, the king, Salman has already signaled his readiness to rely less on oil and invest more human resources which means more and more Saudi citizens will have to work. Therefore, don’t believe the lies that you are welcome in the country, and more to the point, there are no Shias working in the country as no Iranians or Iraqis can dare stoop so low as to do menial jobs for their countries are rich enough to cater for their needs. Before you get to Saudi Arabia, please remember that Nigerians are always regarded as conmen, drug traffickers, pilferers and prostitutes and no matter how hairy your beards look, no matter how punctual you are during work, the way they regard you will not change. But stay here in Nigeria and help rebuild your country. Please try to emulate your Shia brothers in Nigeria who have never dreamed of going to Iran or Iraq to work as cleaners, drivers, sentinels or cooks. If Saudi Arabia is truly passionate about lifting you out of poverty, please ask them to stop funding mosques and infecting your clerics with Wahhabi ideology, ask them rather to start funding construction of companies so that you can work here https://www.islamicmovement.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=2875:before-you-work-in-saudi-arabia&catid=41:frontpage

IT’S BEEN HAPPENING FOR YEARS It’s an issuing that has been taking place for years. In 2016, a woman from Kurigram in northern Bangladesh who went to Saudi Arabia as a housemaid, became pregnant after she was raped by her employer. She took shelter at the Bangladesh embassy in Riyadh and was sent back home, broken and forever changed. According to Bangladesh embassy in Riyadh, Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment, Wage Earners Welfare Board and families of victim women, as many as 150 women from the country were victims of physical and mental torture in Saudi Arabia in 2015. Their figures were sourced from the Bangladesh embassy in Riyadh, where its nationals can flee to safe houses in a bid to escape work burden and torture. There have also been numerous reports of domestic workers from other countries including Kenya and India being subjected to abuse at the hands of their employers in Saudi Arabia. In 2009, US-based Human Rights Watch (HRW) slammed a Saudi Arabian court decision to drop charges against an employer accused of abusing an Indonesian maid so severely she lost her fingers and toes. HRW said Nour Miyati had been beaten daily and forced to work long hours without rest for her Saudi employers, knocking out a tooth and damaging one of her eyes. A judge who reviewed the case in Riyadh awarded Ms Miyati about $US670 ($AU696.47) for her injuries but dropped charges against the wife of her employer, who had earlier confessed to abusing the maid and had been sentenced by a lower court to 35 lashes. “This outrageous ruling sends a dangerous message to Saudi employers that they can beat domestic workers with impunity, and that victims have little hope of justice,’’ Nisha Varia, senior researcher in the women’s rights division at HRW, said at the time. Ms Miyati had earlier had her fingers and toes amputated because of the delay in receiving care for gangrene and malnourishment, the group said. https://www.news.com.au/world/middle-east/employers-from-hell-domestic-workers-tortured-by-their-masters/news-story/55b5173abfe5171b2973c478ce2704d3 |
I RECEIVED NO SALARY BUT ONLY VIOLENCE’ In the majority of cases those who have left their home countries to work as maids in Saudi and been abused have not been paid for their work. Several have reported having their passports taken by their employers once they arrived. Aisha Begum, a Bengali domestic worker, told the Middle East Eye she ran away from an employer who did not pay her for four months and repeatedly beat her. She was also leaving the Gulf State to return to her home in Bangladesh yesterday. Another woman, who didn’t want to be identified, told local media she arrived in Saudi Arabia late last year for a job as a domestic worker but was instead “taken to different apartments where men of Arab descent tortured” her. “I received no salary but only violence and sickness during my days in Arab,” she said.

THOUSANDS of women from all over the world continue to be lured to Saudi Arabia with the promise of steady jobs only to instead be tortured and raped by their employers, according to reports. Khaleda Akhter, 28, has just spent months inside a Bangladeshi-run safe house in Saudi Arabia, and was yesterday wrapped in bandages and on her way home to Bangladesh to see her two children. Like thousands of other women who also migrated to work as maids in the Gulf kingdom, Ms Akhter fled her employers, following months of physical and mental abuse. “They tried to burn me,” Ms Akhter told the Middle East Eye. “Not once, but twice. If I knew this would happen, I would never have gone.” Another former domestic worker who travelled to Saudi Arabia for employment before escaping told news.com.au she was regularly “tortured by [her] master”. There are more than a million domestic maids working in Saudi Arabia, the world’s biggest oil exporter where many families employ foreign home help. Rights organisations say many domestic maids work in difficult circumstances, do not know Arabic and often suffer from abuse by their employers. One of the most shocking cases emerged in 2014 when a Sri Lankan maid returned from Saudi Arabia with 24 nails inside her body. The woman alleged that her Saudi employer had tortured her and drove nails into her body as punishment. In another incident, Indonesian housemaid Sumiati Binti Mustapa, 23, was severely beaten by her Saudi employer who put a hot iron to her head, mutilated her with scissors and left her with broken bones and internal bleeding in 2010. The offender was later sentenced to three years jail. A United Nations report released earlier this month warned that more needed to be done to prevent the exploitation and abuse of domestic workers in the Middle East. The “implementation and enforcement remain major challenges, and continuing and credible allegations of abuse and fraudulent behaviour continue to plague the sector”, the International Labour Organisation (ILO), a UN agency, report said. ILO estimated that nearly one in five of the world’s migrant domestic workers live in the Middle East, a total of 3.16 million people of which 1.6 are women — although the organisation claims that may be a conservative estimate. “Important progress has been made over the last few years by a number of countries in the Middle East towards legislative change to protect migrant workers,” the ILO report read. “Yet implementation and enforcement remain major challenges, and continuing and credible allegations of abuse and fraudulent behaviour continue to plague the sector.” Dhaka University associate professor of international relations Syeda Rozana Rashid said the increasing demand for female housekeepers “has led to the rise of overseas female migration in the countries that provide very little ground for human rights exercise“. “It is not possible to bring the receiving countries under any agreement to contain the level of repression,” she said. “It will result in low remittance inflow and decrease the demand for workers from this region.” About 35 per cent of domestic workers in Saudi Arabia are Filipinos and Indians, the daily newspaper Al Eqtesadiyah reported. The number of Bangladeshi workers going to the Kingdom for work was over 68,000 in 2016 and rose to over 83,000 in 2017. But many of them are rushing to get out even quicker than they got in. In 2018, at least 1000 Bengali maids returned to Bangladesh to escape physical and sexual abuse in Saudi, according to local non-government organisation BRAC. |

Grupo:Thank you my brother even though i dont agree with all you have written, sometimes i think Nigerians are some of the most ignorant people in the World. They never read the news or seek genuine information. Any Nigerian planning to abscond must do that in EU countries,US,Canada,New Zealand or Australia. All these countries have asylum procedure with a humanitarian touch. Anyone absconding in any other country in the world apart from the ones mentioned above is jumping from frying pan to fire. Nigerians believe in Illusions The christians abscond in Israel while the muslims abscond in Saudi Arabia because they are holy lands unfortunately these two holy land countries discriminate against black people. https://www.aljazeera.com/programmes/talktojazeera/inthefield/2018/03/deportation-prison-israel-african-asylum-seekers-180302143018483.html |
