That coup was not an Igbo coup, sadly an Igbo officer leaked details of the coup to Azikwe who then left the country before the putsch took place.

Hausa and Yoruba political leaders were killed and no Ibo political leaders were.
Hausa and Yoruba senior officers were killed, I can't recollect any senior Ibo leaders being killed.

Even though the Political leaders deserved what they got because of their excesses, that status quo of skewed killings was always going to result in a "return match".

Nzeogwu was a selfless hero and we need more off him.
It is not your place to say "political leaders deserved what they got because of their excesses"... their excesses is not your business if you are not the same ethnicity as the political leaders..

It's not the business of igbos if there's corruption in the northern region, mid West region and Western region..

Their business should start and end in the Igbo region and not the entire eastern region.

RussellRutherfo:
You are suffering the effect of that failed revolution today with the North dominating the Nigeria Political landscape. A people whose leaders didn't want Nigeria but wanted to secede. This distrust between the North and the South(Yorubas and Igbos) even goes back as far as 1922 when Clifford Constitution stipulated that a Legislative Council administer the East and Western regions.

From between the periods of 1945-1950. Oil just discovered in the Igbo dominated Eastern region. Do you know the Emirs of Katsina and Zaria demanded that they be given 50% of the seats in the newly formed Central Legislature.

The Emirs threatened to secede from Nigeria if their demands were not met. The acceptance of these demands signaled the beginning of northern domination of Nigerian national politics.

Prior to independence, the Ibo dominated the political, social, military and business institutions of Nigeria. After independence, the Ibo lost their privileged status, while the Hausa/Fulani gained affluence and controlled the federal government.

This shows you the hatred against the Igbos from the very founding days of the nation and the large scale corruption that this nation was built on. Imagine, as a young Army man living close to these corrupt Northern politicians like Sarduana of Sokoto whose agenda of hate against the Igbos ten years after from 1950 steamed from the fact that since some of their Emirs demanded 50% of seats as oil was discovered in the Igbos dominated Eastern region then his and other northern political evil Islamic leaders like him turned it into a hatred of Igbos and their seemingly control of the North by Northerners.

All these were personal agenda of greed and have a hand in the new oil pie. Imagine, as a young Igbo Army officer seeing all these massive corruption and realizing this was not the Nigeria of your dreams 6years after independence but a massive personal agenda to control Oil and Nigeria while using the vehicle hatred of Igbos to ride in. These revolutionaries struck as evident it was not just Igbos but other tribes like young Yoruba and middle belt officers.

Their only failure. This revolution failed to succeed as their Lagos counterpart didn't do what they plan to do. If they had succeeded. Nigeria would have gone on to success and probably the Nigeria-Biafra Civil War may not have happened.
Again the coup was a success.. it was a coup to kill off non Igbos and dominate non Igbos it was not a revolution.

Before independence Igbos were favored by the British and got political positions and posts outside their Igbo region that the Igbos were not supposed to get.

After independence the regions took the political positions and posts that was originally meant for them.

After independence the first president was nnamdi azikwe so that nullifies your claim that north controlled the federal government, it was Igbos that controlled the federal government and nnamdi azikwe used his presidency to give Igbos appointments outside the Igbo region and this was the beginning of division.

Igbos never had a privilege status.. the regions took control of what was rightfully their own.

Igbos are the ones mostly suffering the effects of Ironsi unification decree..

oga don't change the topic. And stop misrepresentation of facts. You make it look as if the Igbos waged war on others. These were officers who for whatever reason decided to plan and execute a coup. People like you who are easily brainwashed or maybe don't have a high IQ should endeavor to learn from those who know. We have several coups involving people from the same tribe but it's only the one that had igbos that has been magnified. Abeg make una rest with all these fabrications.
dalass is 100% correct.

The part of your comment I put in bold is also what Igbos don't want to accept...

Igbos waged war on other ethnic nations that's the truth the other tribes have seen and accepted.. only Igbos don't accept it Igbos will call it mis-representation of facts.

RussellRutherfo:
Your opening sentence which is "Normal and sane people don't......" Is no disrespect to you totally nonsense.

Read up the history of any nation. When there is a revolution especially one like that of 1966 that seemed like it was majorly targeted at non-igbos. It is the leaders that must catch the blow especially evil leaders like Sarduana of Sokoto that had Islamic Nazi behavior.

I am of the opinion that these youthful exburent officers of igbo origin was "over-forward" on a fight that was supposed to be between the Yoruba(Action Group) vs Hausa(NPC) as there was already a riot in 1953, 13 years before the 1966 revolution where a Northern political leader by name, Mallam Inua Wada of the Northern People’s Congress lead this riot in anticipation of Chief Akintola's visit to Kano over some perceived insult to some Northern political leader who was booed at the Lagos parliament. They were rival parties and Mallam Wada got ready 1000 men to retaliate this insult that happened in Lagos.

Guess what tribe was caught in this cross fire when Chief Akintola failed to show. It was the Igbos as always who were massacred in numbers. These young Igbo officers carried the matter to clear young Nigeria of all these corrupt politicians (if only they could see into the future and see that the corruption of those days politicians would be a joke compared to the ones of today). I believe they would have taken a different action.

This is where the Igbo people have to learn how to be cunning like the other tribes especially like the Yorubas which has always kind of helped them in this Nigeria arrangement. You see the Igbo man agrees to do something with you. He goes in bravely and most times do 120% when what you wanted from him was 80%. This is sometimes their undoing.

These young officers meant well for the nation but unfortunately did not execute the whole thing properly.
1966 was a coup by hatred filled Nzeogwu who hated non-igbos with passion.

in the 1960s , nzeogwu exhibited such hatred towards Yorubas.

"According to a Nigerian Police Special Branch Report, nzeogwu executed at least 4 army and police security personnel including one of the men on his team (Sergeant Daramola Oyegoke). nzeogwu also participated in the execution of Col. Raph Shodeinde, his superior officer at the Nigerian Military Training College and is reported to have shot indiscriminately at fleeing women and children.."..

the statement above shows pure hatred for Yorubas and a lot of igbos all have this similar behavior towards Yorubas.

The Igbo coup leaders did not mean well for Nigeria and wanted to forcefully take over all regions in Nigeria and that's why they only targeted non-igbo leaders.

It's not the business of igbos if there's corruption in the northern region, mid West region and Western region..

Their business should start and end in the Igbo region and not the entire eastern region.

RussellRutherfo:
People like him were already fanning the flames of hate and believe me. It was inevitable. The distrust and hate was already sewn into the foundation of Nigeria as a nation by hateful individuals like the Sarduana of Sokoto.

It was not just him. In 1945. There was a riot where many Igbos was first killed. Then, there was the 1953 riot organised by a Northerner named Mallam Inua Wada of the Northern People’s Congress {N.P.C}. As a result of the anticipated visit of Chief Akintola's visit to Kano. Akintola was a member of the South West, Action Group Party which irritated the Northern NPC party.

You now see why there were some Yorubas involved in the 1966 coup. There was the 1965 wild wild West riot before then. The only thing is the Igbo officers as per the Nzogbu Nzogbu attitude of Igbos put in their all and were at the forefront of correcting this distrust and tribal hate already evident in the young Nigeria project so as the revolutionary coup failed. The rest pushed the narrative as an Igbo coup thing.

I bet you if the coup had succeeded. The other tribes won't have called it the Igbo coup.
Normal and sane people don't correct distrust and tribal hate by killing the leaders of other ethnic nation's because that will make things worse..

The coup succeeded and it was an Igbo coup and it was taken over by another Igbo coup which Ironsi led..

The coup and Ironsi coup was about igbos taking over Nigeria and dominating the other ethnic nations which is why Ironsi created the unification decree to take all revenue from all the regions to the federal government because Ironsi and his fellow Igbos thought they will be military head of state forever.

That's also one of the reasons after Ironsi was killed in a counter coup Ojukwu did his own coup to take over Nigeria under the guise of seceding..

It was a Igbo vs north issue but Igbos transferred their aggression on the Western region and Yorubas.

Unification decree did no such thing. Ojukwu and eastern region were solely in charge of all the revenue accrued by eastern region. In furtherance of the autonomy granted to eastern region, Ojukwu refused to recognize Gowon as Head of State of Nigeria. If regional autonomy was vacated by the so-called Decree 34, would Ojukwu block Gowon as head of state and C-in-C of Nigeria? Most Nigerians seem to be brainless due to tribal pressure.
unification decree gave power to the federal government over the regions..

the regions could no longer use their income and revenue without the authorization of the head of state.

the regions could no longer carry out development and infrastructural projects without the authorization of the head of state.

the regions could no longer employ people without the authorization of the head of state.

e.t.c.

unification decree weakened the regions..

Unification decree:
2. 1d for the purpose of administration each group of provinces shall subject to the authority of the Head of the National Military Government, be under the general direction and control of a Military Governor appointed by the Head of the National Military Government;

3. 1. As from the appointed day all offices in the service of the Republic in a civil capacity shall be offices in a single service to be known as the National Public Service; and accordingly all persons who immediately before that day are members of the public service of the Federation or of the public service of a Region shall on that day become members of the National Public Service:
3. 2. As from the appointed day—
a. the Public Service Commission established under section 146 of the Constitution of the Republic shall be known as the National Public Service Commission, and references in that section and elsewhere to the Public Service Commission of the Federation shall be amended accordingly;

4.1 Subject to the provisions of this section, power to appoint persons to hold or act in offices in the National Public Service (including power to make appointments on promotion and to confirm appointments) and to dismiss and exercise disciplinary control over persons holding or acting in such offices shall, as from the appointed day, vest in the National Public Service Commission.

You are correct by moronic default. Unification decree centered on the uniform civil service in Nigeria which gave Nigeria grade of levels in today 's civil service. The Decree 34 has nothing to do with unitary system of government. The regional government ended in Nigeria when Gowon created the 12 states with administrators instead of governors.
unification decree abolished regions from keeping their income and revenue.. it ensured every income and revenue made by the regions go to the federal government..

How could Ironsi have abolished the 4 Regions Nigeris had if the 4 Regions were still existing the day Ironsi was killed? Did Ironsi come back from the dead to abolish the Regions?

Ironsi never tampered with resource control, not even for one day. All 4 Regions controlled their resources throughout the 6 months Ironsi was in charge

It was Gowon that came after Ironsi and used Decree 14 to abolish the 4 Regions we had, and created 12 new states to replace them

Gowon immediately followed this up with Decree 15 where he abolished resource control and placed it in the hands of the federal government
As I said to you the other time....

read your fellow igbo supremacist comment below accepting Ironsi's culpability .

I will continue using this quote because its very rare for an Igbo person to accept criticism and that he/she is wrong ...

CSTRR:
It was ironsi with his unitary policy that ensured that the economic disparity between the North and the South that promoted southern superiority was dissipated on the altar of one unitary country.

And once the economic advantage moved from regions to federal control, it created an equilibrium that empowered the populous north.

It was an Igbo man that ironically created Northern dominance by mistake.

But the same Akenzua shit his mouth when Gowon was abolishing the 4 Regions Nigeria had, created 12 new states and stripped them of resource control
you and I have argued this thousands of times.. It was ironsi that made it that the regions no longer controlled their resources and their revenue which means the regions became subservient to the FG.

It was Ironsi that abolished regionalism and not Gowon... Gowon only maintained what Ironsi had already done.

2 out of the 4 regions had Yoruba and Igbo as the majority and that would have been a problem for minorities in the south..

so Akenzua would have been very happy that states were created.

War would have still happened even without the coup. The Islamic jihadist, Sarduana of Sokoto was already pushing the country towards that lane with his open hatred of the Igbos before that coup.

I am of the opinion that the coup kept this nation together because Sarduana of Sokoto probably had in mind to divide the North away from Nigeria.

He every inch was a Hitler in the making.
The only thing is the coup plotters who handled the Lagos part didn't do their side of the job effectively.
His dislike of igbos started and ended in the north.

So there won't have been any war.. the only people who took hatred beyond their region were Igbos.

The reality here is this, for any tribe to rule Nigeria, you need to align with at least one other tribe which is what the Yorubas and the Hausa/fulani's have been doing over the years. The truth here is that the Igbos should come to this Understanding and align. It's either you work with the Hausa/Fulanis to achieve this or work with the Yoruba to achieve this. You cannot hate the Hausa/fulanis and hate the Yorubas at the same time. Learn to use your "enemy" to your advantage. According to this post here, they claim they've been marginalised since 2015 how about before 2015? We are talking about just 8years ago, we've had 16years before that time, were they marginalised then?? This anger should be directly at our politicians who failed to deliver fruit of democracy to our regions. What has your representatives brought to your region huh I dont believe it is until you are a president before you can bring about the change in your region. My decision to vote for Peter Obi wont be because he is a saint, save me of all that saint story, it is only on equality. If the slogan of "emilokan should come from any region I think it is from the South east in all honesty. But picking someone as a saint is just pure nonsense. The PDp ruined the country for 16years and they decamped to APC to continue the ruins, they have even done worse, PDP even apologised that if given second chance they wont steal again. The 3 candidates we have right now are/,were all part of the rots in the system. They are /were active players in the system since 1999 so this topic of sainthood is total rubbish. I am not voting for Tinubu because of his health. Senility has stepped in, Atiku is seasonal failure. In the spirit of equality and it is obvious PO is the most fit for the job, he should be given the chance. But the blame game of marginalisation cannot be blamed on other tribe, just like betting, the other two tribes have been working together and you chose to go for the PDP which didnt work out, it's nothing to be sad about, na una carry wey nor work. The two powerful tools these our new slave masters(politicians) are using to divide us are RELIGION & TRIBALISM. Let us all old our representatives accountable for not doing the job and stop blaming other people for our misfortune. I am so open to all abuse. It gives me great joy
Igbos have already partnered with the Fulanis for this election..

Igbos have 2 candidates in this election in Okowa and Obi.

Okowa is Igbo and Atiku's vice president. So PDP will likely win the election.

If he drowned without anything pulling him down his body would have been floating.... which means he had an accident and his clothes or shoes/sports trainers or shoe lace or part of his body was stuck or entangled with the jet ski and pulled him down deeper into ocean...

In this case, knowing how to swim wouldn't save him because something is continuously pulling him deeper into the ocean and he would be panicking because he would have to release himself from the sinking jet ski while in the water or whatever was pulling him deeper into the ocean..

but the report didn't say whether the jet ski sunk or not.

Just sharing an interesting personal account by a usa-based Diasporan!

****************
“As I look at the recently concluded world cup series, I am saddened by the performance of the Green Eagles.

While many people know of my foray into software development for the country, I seldom talk about other projects I attempted to execute in the country as part of my contribution as a Diasporan who wanted to give back.

A friend in this group called me today to ask and wonder why the 360 degree turn in my attitude towards the country and why I am so embittered. I laughed and said nothing. After careful deliberation, I thought it was time to share more of my experiences while I sojourn in Nigeria.

Criticism of Diaspora is completely misplaced.

People need to understand the quiet pain and losses we endure for our country.

Once I settled down in 2016 and felt (a false) a sense of security about my investments in Nigeria and the critical development work I was doing for the country, I considered another undertaking.

I was angered by the massive number of Nigerians watching the European Soccer league. I imagined the economic benefits to Europe and financial losses in foreign revenue, lost jobs to Nigeria

I approached the minister of sport in 2017 through a mutual friend and assured him we could bring soccer to international standards in Nigeria. We could set a healthy minimum salary (in millions), create over 100,000 direct middle class jobs in the first year, and over 250,000 indirect middle class and low income jobs.

The minister was dismissive at first. He had been approached with similar offers that never materialized, and I understood his skepticism.

I assured him that I don't start anything if I can't finish it. I am a pitbull of sort when I embark on a project.

I assured him I would bring $1 billion dollars to the game in Nigeria. He practically laughed me out of his office. So, I issued him a challenge.

If I could bring the money to the table, would the ministry grant me a license to start a new league in Nigeria.

He looked me up and down as if to size my capacity to deliver, then chose to take me up on my challenge. Personally, nothing excited me more than a healthy dose of challenge.

I immediately returned to the US. Put a team together. A friend who had played with Atlanta Falcons and ran a semi-pro football team in Atlanta introduced me to a number of sport agents, which led to an introduction to a major sports management group based in NY. I quickly engaged the group to put a league and marketing plan together, a $75k project. My team in Atlanta put the business plan together, and within 30 days, we were armed with a pitch document. I went into sport equity market pitched several equity firms, leveraging my businesses, and i successfully secured a $750m letter of credit (LOC) with terms to draw subject to the issuance of license promised by the minister.

I returned to Abuja and the minister was presented with LOC, I have never seen a black man turned white before, as he could not believe I had an LOC for $750m. I assured him we would supplement the funding with a licensing fee to be issued to 10 club owners at $25ml each, which would complete the $1bl guaranteed to the minister.

The league will fund $50ml to each team, creating a $75ml escrowed capital to launch each club

Leaving us with $250ml to develop the league

We began to test the market for broadcast licensing agreements to fund our LOC payback. Interest was strong and the numbers made sense.

There are more people watching soccer games in Nigeria on a Saturday than the UK, Germany, and France combined. The export market for Nigerian soccer league games across the globe is mature. There would be little or no distance between us and Brazil if we did things right.

Nigeria was licensing Euro soccer games and exporting foreign exchange and to me reversing that trend was a personal objective.

We submitted our business and marketing plan to the minister, including economic impact. He was excited and all on board. The secretary to the Ministry of Sport was on vacation while all these were going on. The legal department engaged us, and an agreement to issue a license was put in place. Negotiation ensued and terms agreed upon. "It's execution time" just needed the secretary to return from vacation.

USL (United Soccer League) was about to be a reality.

We would take over existing federal and state stadiums for 10 clubs and bring them up to international standards with corporate suites.

We were going to leverage the first year of broadcast license to attract retired BIG name international stars like Ronaldinho, Kaka for 1 yr contract or borrow some international star to help launch the league. The clubs making up the league would have to bid to join our first year.

We set our season opposite European league to give us room to grow with minimal competition for our audience.

This was an exciting development for me as things moved along.

Secretary to the ministry returned, and our discussion on agreement was now at his desk, expecting things to move forward. Then came the jolt from all directions.

Suddenly, there was talk about buying the existing NFL, something I vehemently opposed. You can't take a bad product and wrap it in a new package and expect the audience to buy it. There is a reason the NFL is not captivating the attention of Nigerians, but we can help it develop, not acquire it.

Also, we feared we would run into conflict with existing, compromised structure under the control of entrenched personalities.

We offered to put $50ml into the NFL to improve it and allow it to feed players into the USL (United Soccer League) which would increase the value of the NFL and we would share stadium with them to improve value of their broadcast license fees.

Not only would we have triggered massive, minor league development across the country, we would have develop local stars to international status, with similar benefits as enjoyed abroad, retirement programs, health coverage, multi million naira contracts, super star statuses.

I remember introduction to the great Kanu by an assistant to VP Osinbajo and a few other greats in the football space in Nigeria. The excitement was definitely brewing.

I had people working on both sides of the Atlantic working on league rules, marketing, retail licensing, security, trademarks, and other intellectual rights.

Then, the bomb shell. The secretary of the ministry decided to send the agreement to outside parties for review.

It was the last I ever saw the agreement. The agreement left the building and never came back. Inquiries after inquiries yielded nothing.

I was disillusioned, I had put my credibility on the line for the LOC. I had triggered costly activities at numerous organizations locally in Nigeria and in the US.

Suddenly, I got a call from an unknown number. It was a male voice on the other line.

Who is this I asked.

Response : Oga it's not important, I just want to tell you that things will go well if you can at least leave 5% of this project for the people at the ministry.

I was stunned left speechless for about 60 seconds

5% of $750ml is $37.5ml where on earth do you hide that on your books and how do you allocate and describe that expense to your investors.

That was the end of my soccer project in Nigeria. I promised I would not participate in corruption in Nigeria and stood by it.

2 years later, I completed my primary and robust project for Nigeria. Tested and approved to launch in 2019. 45 days before the launch date, a demand came forward that could have easily put me on the radar with the US government and in violation of the US foreign corrupt practices act. I declined.

2 weeks before we were to launch the project for Nigeria, I was verbally advised that the head honcho has decided to stop the project. He was no longer interested. It was no longer about Nigerians. It was about his personal interest and decision.

The cost to me personally was significant financially, with several million dollars just discarded by head honcho of the government agency. I also lost a network of investors and sustained damaged credibility with one of the largest sports equity funds in the US

I left Nigeria and promised only to return for family matters only.

Nigeria died inside me.

To all those who want to criticize Diaspora, please understand that many of us tried and, in many ways, failed. You, the people, just don't know or hear about the sacrifices we make. It's a horror show.

We love our country as much as you do. When you say we are online and just posting and agitating, there are reasons for it.

Nigeria is a crime scene, a burial ground for our investments, life savings, and retirement.

Stop judging us if you don't know the whole story.”
it's a fake story...

each team in Holland's Eredivisie gets 5 million euros per year, while the winner gets about 10 million euros....

Nobody will give 10 Nigerian clubs $50m each... it is not feasible.

All Nigeria banks are thieves and rogues. They get dollars from CBN at official rate of #450.00 or thereabout. When you ask them to sell dollar for you to fund domicillary account, they will decline and tell you they don't sell. They will now pack the dollars give their agents ( aboki exchanger ) and direct you to go and buy from them at an unofficial rate of #700 + per dollar. It will never be well with those bankers, and those that are making life miserable for common people
Blakjewelry:
big fool dollar is scarce but it is surplus at the aboki joint, if you need million dollars you can get at it very easy at the aboki joint. Where does the aboki get his dollar from, na 20 dollar wey people dey manage. In fact when the dollar limit was 1k dolls it wasn't as scarce as this. What is the volume of trade by the 20 dollar users. There are as much verve card owners as visa and master card. Out of the international card owners only a few percentage of them even use it for international transactions, besides people only buy stuff that are not produced locally, infact if no be say you dey craze why you go dey mention Bluetooth, your father dey produce Bluetooth? All the products people buy from outside are actually produce and imported too, plus what item can $20 get you mumu.

U say gowon never did anything buh y didnt he keep to the agreement on aburi accord. Also why did he create 12 state to decentralise power in the east. And also y did he activate article 8 to control the east when ever he pleases
You still don't understand..

If the coup didn't happen then Gowon wouldn't happen, aburi Accord wouldn't happen, state creation wouldn't happen.

The problem with you and most Igbos is that you want to do things to other people and get away with it without the other people reacting and when the other people react you start complaining and screaming victimization when the truth is you started it and it didn't go the way you expected it..

Bro u r only pointing fingers at igbos saying they are the problem of Nigeria yet u still say they are suffering because of there greed. I still dont understand how u r affected
Don't put words in my mouth.. I didn't say anything about greed. Since you have mentioned greed.

It's their greed that made them abolish something they would have benefited from.
