Olalekanbanky1: Nothing go ever please una! U say na production of goods go help? The local rice wey una Dey produce, for instance, did it help? Instead it’s price skyrocketed as well.
Person wan increase minimum wage to 200k una still Dey complain. If they refuse to increase it while inflation persists, would you arrest them?
Try to appreciate once in awhile As for me, I don’t trust Nigerian businessmen. The way they skyrocket prices is out of this world You talked trash in the first few paragraphs and exposed your hypocrisy in the last paragraph. If businessmen inflate prices, what do you think they will do when govt suddenly print more money and pay people previously earning N30k times seven of that. They will increase prices accordingly and with extra in anticipation of more money govt might have printed and circulated behind their back. That will render the N200k unable to buy what 30k could before the increase. Money is like a ticketing system. It doesn't increase the volume of goods available to meet needs. It only facilitates the exchange of things. |

grandstar: You have probably lived all life in Nigeria or Africa. By the time you travel and live in Europe for a year, you'll be the one saying "my daughter can not marry Oyinbo. Tufiakwa."
The Chinese for decades lived in desperate poverty under Chairman Mao's Communist government. The Chinese felt ashamed of themselves and felt they were backward. During the 30 years of communist rule, only 200,000 Chinese travelled abroad.
Then Chairman Mao died in the 1970s and a few years later under a new leader began market reforms. From 1978 to 2018, it is e stimated that the Chinese economy grew on the average of 8-10% yearly and lifted 800m people out of poverty and 400m into the middle class. A few years back , China claimed to have ended abject poverty. In 2018, 400,000 Chinese travelled overseas everyday either for business or for pleasure. What a phenomenal difference from the dark communist days.
The problem with China wasn't the Chinese people but bad leadership and bad policies.
Look at India. India is presently poor. We can add Pakistan and Bangladesh as they are all ethnic Indian and are South Asians.
Would you say ethnic Indians are inherently backward. Those countries are associated with poverty
Yet, Indians are the preferred English speaking expatriates globally. They are the CEO of many American companies, including Microsoft and Alphabet, the creators of the Windows software and Chrome Browser I am using to draft this response.
The Indians are the richest ethnic group in the USA today, surpassing the Jews
Why is India so backward? The reason is simple. Their leaders at independent set up a protectionist wall towards foreign goods to encourage local manufacturing and introduced licensing for most businesses nicknamed the "License Raj" that made it a bureaucratic nightmare for companies to operate. India did grow but it was slow, on the average of under 2.5% yearly and was nicknamed the "Hindu Rate of Growth."
The reason for such policies was not because Indians were stupid or senseless. It was because for almost 200 years, the British who colonized them had overexploited them and they now wanted to insulate themselves from any form of foreign exploitation
However, in the early 1990s when the Indian economy faced severe economic crisis, they were forced to commence market reform policies that was not only bringing about a $1b a month into the country but was delivering fast economic grown. For almost 20 years it grew on the average of 8% yearly.
Africa's problem has a lot to do with colonialism. The West did not prepare Africa for independence. I doubt the British ever built a school in Nigeria. All education efforts were by religious organizations or communities. It was estimated that only 5% of Nigerian were literate at Independence. The uneducated can easily be exploited by their leaders and can not stand for themselves. Also, all the countries they ran were all poor at independence. The British had put little effort to develop them. The DRC had only 5 graduates.
Worse, it seemed as though many of the colonial masters had skewered the political system in a way to benefit their former colonial master or carried without a sense of care of what would happen next.
For instance in Nigeria, the 1960 elections had the North, which had less population than either the East or West determine who would lead the country as they won more seats in parliaments than the other 2 top contenders. It stank.
Also, the West turned on a blind eye to the rise of dictators during the Cold War in many of these African countries. The lack of a democratic structure enabled complete incompetents like Kenneth Kaunda and Mobutu latch on to power too long, impoverishing their people. The first African leader to voluntarily leave his office after independence was Olusegun Obasanjo and that was in 1979, When you consider that most African countries gained independence in 1960, you'll realise the severity of the problem.
The West only started demanding accountability at the end of the tail end of the 1980s when the Cold War began to thaw. If they had had that approach in the 1960s, Africa would not have been in this mess.
Contrast Africa with Hong Kong. It was preferred for independence. It was a rich and prosperous colony of the UK and they weren't keen on seeing the British leave and be handed over to China.
Nowadays, all British colonies are prosperous, including black dominated ones like Bermuda and the Cayman Islands.
That is why when you see Nigerians when they return from abroad, they say "Only if we have good leaders." They acknowledge that it is bad leadership and not the color of our skin that should be accountable. The second largest rice farmer in Nigeria is winding down operations because of insecurity. The leaders have the power to stop insecurity in 48 hours but have chosen not to for selfish reasons. |

Career › Re: ₦200,000 Minimum Wage: FG To Take Decision Soon by CodeTemplar: 9:52am On Jul 17, 2023 |
The question isn't about minimum wage but of price of things. Prices determine buying power of the money.
If the govt exercises the power to print money and decide to introduce it into the system by paying workers N200k, the businessmen who produce and import what that money ends up buying will adjust because nothing stops them for setting high prices. At the end, the worker will discover his 200k can't buy what 30k could before the minimum wage increase.
The only solution to our problem is production of goods and not of money. Money is gradually failing but many can't see it. |

SmartPolician: I used to think like this, but census goes beyond this.
Census tells us the number of houses in various parts of the country, the occupants or sometimes, they may not be occupied. It also gives information about households in the country and their demographics.
By and large, quality data is used for making informed decisions in countries that genuinely want to make progress. That house to house style gives room for huge manipulations. Let the number of Nigerians with proven relatives be counted first then the house to house aspect can be commenced. It will reduce regional inflation of figures that has finished Nigeria. |

If GSM SIM data, NIN and BVN is done correctly, it can be used to count the people. Add death and birth certificates to it and it will be even better.
Census has always been a scam in Nigeria. How come the region with more population end up having lower bank account opening rate?
We can't afford trillions for a useless exercises meant to consolidate the grip of one region over the affairs of Nigeria. |

"In the next couple of weeks, we will unveil the Pulaaku solution, which will address the grievances and social exclusion of our Fulbe cousins in the northwest and also towards addressing the root causes of all the banditry and insurgency in the nation,” he explained.
Pulaaku also called the “Fulani code of conduct,” is an integral cultural and ethical value system specific to the Fulanis. What nonsense Pulaaku is this one trying to sell? Under Buhari they borrowed heavily and shared to the hinterlands of the north yet he couldn't lift anyone out of P alone talk less of the their wuruwuru POVERTY they have perfected how to use to attract oil money. So it is only the north where the poor are? Almajiri is part of tradition and culture so isn't a sign of poverty. I read somewhere that even Dangote passed through the system. They produce food most so what endemic poverty or hunger is fueling them to afford AK47 and embark on kidnapping sprees of their fellow poor for ransoms of millions of naira. I see the wisdom in allowing food imports now. If the south embraces a combo of local food production and import, the north will find it harder to sell their banditry inflated foods across borders and have a rethink about this whole staged amnesty push they call insecurity. |

No truly.poor man in Nigeria today can afford AK47 of around N1m. In a situation where hardworking fellow are suffering and can't even shoot a gun if given one due to hunger talk less of affording one, this known terror sympathizer is talking about non-kinetic approach. I hope that it isn't amnesty he is talking about. That's where he will see the limit of suffering in Nigerians. |
