This is a good development! The tax net needs to be widened. How do musicans, comedians, actors etc make money from their activities but pay little or no tax. How does Linda Ikeji earn million in blogging but pay little or no tax? That has to change! We need to treat these guys like the high net worth individuals that they are.
There should be a tax on luxury accommodation sef! All these guys renting/buying apartments in Ikoyi, VI etc should pay extra. |

Chiefpriest1: Lol. First question the so-called FG should ask itself is ' why do Nigerians evade tax"?
For me the simple reason is that I know my money will be stolen and squandered or used for private investment by our politicians.
The single most effective way of ensuring Nigerians pay tax is to make sure they get value for their money. Simple! Your line of thinking is understandable, but truth is that it does not justify not paying at all! |

Where has it landed us? Privatization of Nepa is the right thing to do. It just hasn't been done properly. The biggest blame is actually with the government and not the discos. Government hasn't done all they were expected to do. Though the discos have also been a bit disappointing. |

There is no accountabilty because before a polithiefian is held accountable people will either defend him along party affiliation or find a way to drag tribal or religious sentiments into it. Actually I tried to be balanced by referencing suicide bombing (north), Adedibu (west), Kanu (east) and put my point across as intellectually and logically as possible. I have no interest in the petty tribal back and forth most people do on naira land. So no ma'am, I didn't assume anything! |

2dugged: you are one of the grand patrons of bigotry and tribal bashing on this forum, when I joined nairaland, your comments were what endeared me to politics section, stop pointing one finger at others ,cos the four is pointing back at you.I have have always craved for unity, but unity is useless where nepotism, corruption, injustice and terror reigns supreme Dude while I agree that Nigeria is filled with corruption, nepotism, injustice etc, but the truth is that it is largely fueled by politicians who feed on the mass level of illiteracy in the land. Middle class educated people chasing a better future for themselves will not be used as suicide bombers, will not become political thugs for adedibu and will not be bowing down for kanu to touch their heads like a god. Instead of us to come together to take on the politicians we allow ourselves to be used by the politicians to take on each other for their gain. Like someone said, no member of ojukwus family died during the Civil War and after the war he lived in relative prosperity, but what about those who fought and died. Who took care of the families? The millions of intertribal marriages suggest we don't really have a problem with each other. It's the politicians that are the problem. |

LastSurvivor11: Like it or not, people like dangote are the reason Nigeria is not moving forward, he has been in good relationship with every government which thereby favours him monopoly from cement (remember Ibeto and Burham cement) stories to other commodities and now sugar..
Don't be suprise that he's the reason the refinery are not working yet just to make sure he finishes his own..
Enjoy ur salah anyway sir.. I don't quite agree with you. Dangotes may not be without some fault, but I think we Nigerians are quick to lay blame for simple government incompetence at the hands of one individual of the other. For example we often say that dangotes made a deal with government to spoil the railway to make way for his trucks. The truth of the matter is that the railway was dead long before dangote expanded to the extent of needing trucks all over the country. Railway disappeared in the early/mid 80's. Dangote was not a household name then. He merely responded to Nigeria not having an efficient rail system and had to buy trucks to move his stuff around. The same way is when we say generator importers are the reason Nigeria doesn't have light. I was born in the 70's and was very aware from the early 80' and light used to go then too. Perhaps not as frequently and for as long spells as it does now, but light went and got worse year on year, but Mikano and Marapco were not household names till the late 90's. They came when Nigerian economy started to expand when banks were being liberalized and new banks like zenith, Gtb etc were opening branches everywhere and required power. So they were simply filling an existing void in the sector. Same for airlines. Private jets exist simply because Nigerian government incompetence and policy flip flops (and not forgetting poor management from the airlines themselves - in my view arik had no business self destructing) have made domestic air travel unreliable for the time conscious business man. If you read any book on entrepreneurs, it will tell you that the first thing to do is to identify a need of people that is not being met and fill that need. That's what dangote, marapco etc have done. Having said that one can argue that dangote is too cozy with all governments and gets waiver etc. That may be true, but why haven't the others done so. The truth is that most Nigerian rich people are lazy minded. We like easy business of just trading. Any idiot can buy bulk cement produced by someone's else and re bag and sell. Or import iron rods and come and sell. The real smarts and the real money comes from manufacturing, but Nigerians tend to runs from the risks inherent in that. They want the easy life of trading. Again Nigeria's refineries are not bad because dangote is building his own! Dangotes is building his own because Nigeria's refineries are bad. And the refineries being bad has nothing to do with dangote. Again he's willing to take a risk and it's going to pay off big time. Whereas people have been importing petrol before dangote but will never build refinery. Again as Nigerians we like trading, not making! |

How to permanently end Biafran agitation
A Yoruba friend asked me: Under what conditions would you support "One Nigeria" and let go of the Biafra agitation and let it die down and finally laid to rest for good?
Here was my response: 1. Close down Lagos ports and open up PH, Calabar, Onitsha and Warri ports.
2. Cancel all direct and major connecting flights to Lagos and Abuja airports only local connecting flights will be allowed. While this is being done, open up Enugu, Calabar, Owerri, Asaba, Uyo and PH to international flights direct and major connecting flights.
3. Ask all international and diplomatic missions to move their embassies and consulates from Lagos, Kano and Abuja to Enugu, PH and Calabar.
4. All federal governments’ agencies in Lagos and Abuja shall be relocated to Enugu, PH and Calabar. CBN, NNPC, e.t.c shall and must relocate to PH, Calabar and Enugu.
5. All multinational companies in Lagos and Abuja, shall and must relocate their offices to PH, Calabar and Enugu.
6.All oil companies must relocate their head offices to PH, as the oil capital of Nigeria.
7. Let the northern children gain admission into federal schools with 300 score points while the South Eastern Children should gain admission with only 20 score points .
8. Let all federal road projects in the North/SW should be handled by one local companies and the one in the SE/SS should be handled by Julius Berger and foreign construction companies.
If these conditions can be fulfilled and implemented for 50years , we can try one Nigeria and let see if you the North and SW will like it for a month. Meaning that Yorubas and Hausas needing to get international visas shall travel to PH, Calabar or Enugu to do that. Same with flying or connecting flights, same with shipping and importing their goods, etc etc.
The Yoruba friend replied: You can’t be serious, this is wickedness and I said... Really? Don’t you think South South and South. Eastern part of Nigeria have been suffering and enduring this very same wickedness for over 50 yrs?
He was quiet for a few seconds and said: Wow, you are right but it never occurred to me.
I said, that’s the problem with One Nigeria, those who are benefiting from it, love it and would love to maintain the status quo. Let each region develop at her own pace, with Airport, Seaports, industries, major projects open to be developed in any part of Nigeria without government interference or strangulation due to tribalism and nepotism!
Let Nigeria be fair to ALL irrespective of tribe, religion, and place of birth. Let there be true federalism and resources control, with the elimination of quota system and federal character in Nigeria. Let's have equal respect for one another irrespective of where the person is coming from in Nigeria. That is what Biafra agitation is all about.
THE SIMPLE TRUTH
Whoever tells you that if Biafra succeed or gain her independence that Igbos leaving in the North or Yoruba land will loose their properties and that things will become worst is an enemy and is among the people that are benefiting from the fraudulent arrangement that exist in Nigeria.
Yugoslavia broke into 6 countries namely: Serbia,Macedonia,Solvenia,Bosia and Hezegovia,Montengro, and croatia and heaven did not fall. They did not leave their Job,leave their formal country before voting to leave....... after voting to leave, all those in the new created countries automatically become foreigners.
Malaysia broke into 2 namely: Malaysia & Singapore and heaven did not fall.
Pakistan broke into 2 namely: Pakistan & Bangladesh and heaven did not fall
United Arab Republic broke into 2 namely: Egypt & Syria and heaven did not fall
If Biafra go, it doesn't mean we can't travel anywhere again provided we have our traveling documents ready.
Why is it that Hausas & Fulanis see Biafra break up as war? Are you not tired of sucking & stealing our oil down to Kaduna reserve, Bornu reserve, and now Liberia reserve?
Allow Biafra to go because Biafrans have suffered a lot of humiliation, intimidation & marginalisation in the hand of this wicked contraption called Nigeria. B #Copied You are assuming the oil of the South South will fall into biafra when you say "our oil"! Strictly speaking, the Igbo do not have oil-currently anyway! |

Mrs Alakija might be a billionaire, but in my view she doesn't deserve much respect. All she has done is to get an OPL for free just because she was connected to IBB. She didn't create any product or invent anything. She doesn't even produce the oil funny enough. She is just like a landlord. Chevron produces the oil and she just collects her share. I understand she doesn't even have the wherewithal to sell her own share of the oil. Chevron's oil trading arm sells her share as well as theirs and they just credit her account. Absolutely no work done, no value added!!
Then she will be coming to talk at various entrepreneurs conferences like she really did something smart like Bill and Mark that we should be emulating.
Every billionaire is Yankee has a product or service that they do, but no not Nigeria. Billionaires just show up in Nigeria with no notice and we hail them. |

While the FG's policies had a hand in it, another truth is that many Nigerian companies are usually poorly run. Think about it, most of the real businesses in Lagos in lekki and vi are owned by Lebanese. The only thing we do with our money is open plaza, build hotel (which usually fall apart after a few years), import and sell or open lounge. But the guys who provide a proper service or actually make something are usually (but not always) Lebanese or foreigners. Case in point Game, Spar, Shop rite, Pep, Chocolat Royale, debonair, KFC, domino pizza etc.
Back to telecoms, O net had no chance of success. It was underfunded, regional and political in nature. Multilinks were greedy. Instead of go mass market they were happy to be selling lines for N160k 20 years ago o! That's probably like N1mln in today's money. Starcoms probably similar fate. Visa phone was way too late in the game. |

Buhari set out to fight corruption but throughout his 12yrs of seeking the presidency,he never had or even thought of a strategy to achieve it. So if it's not d Senate ridiculing him,its his own cabinet or appointees,or d police, party members and now d judiciary has joined suit. Totally agree! My analogy of buhari is like someone knocking in your door for 12 years and you don't answer. Then you finally come downstairs to open the door and say "what do you want?
