LiteratureRe: Excerpt: Redemption House (a Novel) by Consultant(op): 8:19pm On Jan 02, 2008
Seun,

Thanks for the quick response. You should know that a lot of people who attempt suicide don't really want to die, they're just depressed. I will post the rest of the prologue in a minute. It still won't answer all your questions though (if it did, the rest of the book would be unnecessary smiley )
LiteratureExcerpt: Redemption House (a Novel) by Consultant(op): 7:47pm On Jan 02, 2008
Happy New Year all,

I recently completed my first book (a Christian contemporary novel) and I am currently exploring publishing options. I decided to post an excerpt here for comments. See below for the first page.
By the way, if anyone knows a good Christian publisher in Nigeria, I would appreciate it if you could provide the contact information on this thread.

"Redemption House"

I got the letter a month after my suicide attempt. I was lying on a threadbare mattress strewn carelessly among other items on the floor of my studio apartment. The room was virtually empty, with the exception of the aforementioned mattress, a small coffee table and an old moldy sofa – odds and ends that I saved from my days as an undergraduate student. A pile of unread mail sat on the floor beside the sofa, some of them over a month old. It was noon, and I was yet to get out of bed.

A soft breeze blew in through the open window, gently caressing my skin. It was supposed to be early spring, but Houston’s mild winter ambled along sluggishly, as if making up for the time it had lost due to its late arrival. I shivered slightly and pulled the covers more tightly around my body.

This was how I spent my days now, sleeping and waking up, sleeping and waking up, staring endlessly at the worn paint on the wall of my tiny apartment, its color now barely discernable, and listening to the sound of the leaky kitchen faucet in the background. Drip, drip, drip, drip. It stopped driving me crazy days ago. In a way it reminded me of myself, just there, existing aimlessly, having no purpose in life except to aggravate everybody else.

Ivie was certainly aggravated enough. I gave her a terrible scare a month ago, when she knocked on my door and I collapsed into her arms, pumped full of sleeping pills. Since then she had been shuttling between her home in Georgia, and the hospital in Houston. I owed her a lot, including the fact that I had somewhere to call home after I left the hospital. Bless her; Ivie had gotten the best possible apartment for the money I gave her. She had begged me to let her loan me some money, but I stubbornly refused.

Not bad. I have seen people post some really bad stuff on this site so I was expecting more of the same thing, but I was pleasantly surprised. All the best marketing your book, and in your future writing endeavors.

Why are they dancing the jive, salsa and rumba in a Nigerian dance reality show? Does any normal person in Nigeria even do these dances? Whatever happened to Bata, Atilogu, and other Nigerian cultural dances? I think it's ridiculous!

Hi,

Visit the official ETS website for more details about the exam. It's www.gre.org.

The books are extremely scare in Nigeria but if you can find it, try Barron's like someone suggested or get Kaplan.

I am in the process of opening an office in Nigeria to register GRE tests and provide test preparation services. It will open for business September 24th but in the meantime you can visit my site www.usastudyinfo.com.

CareerRe: Human Resourse by Consultant(f): 9:36pm On May 23, 2007
Dupsy,

I am a human capital consultant. Basically what I do is help companies make the most of the human resources. I do work around developing of training programs, putting in place HR technology systems, creating organization structures for companies, HR policies, recruiting.

What you just described that you want to do is not really what HR consultants do. If you want to help people determine what career options to pursue or find their purpose, then you should be looking at being a career counselor in a secondary school or university. that's really where you can make the most impact in this regard. I hope this helps.
Educational ServicesRe: GRE And TOEFL Examinations by Consultant(f): 4:05pm On May 04, 2007
Hi, consultant, u sound very well informed and i'm impressed

'consultant' please can u help me with a few question:

1. Is it better to take TOEFL or IELTS. Which is better for uk, US and Canadian schools
2. What do u need to prepare for GRE, TOEFL and IELTS
3. Can I get your mail address (because i know u'll not give me your phone number). Mine is emcee2k6@gmail.com.

I sincerely anticipate your helping me with these, because that'll make u the 'kool' 'consultant'
I don't have much experience with the IELTS but those who have taken it tell me that the toefl is easier. In the US and Canada, the toefl is the more accepted exam but if you are applying to a school in the UK, you may want to take the IELTS.

Like someone said earlier, there are tons of books out there and you can buy them in Nigeria. I personally recommend Kaplan because the questions are usually harder than the actual exam, so in a way they over prepare you. I have also heard that Barron's is very good. If you have additional questions, you can email me at contactus@usastudyinfo.com.
BusinessRe: Robert Kiyosaki: His 'Rich Dad' Does 'Not Exist'? by Consultant(f): 5:20am On May 02, 2007
@SLEEK CHIC

So from Kiyosaki's book, How do you make money?
By spending money first on things that will earn you returns before spending money on life perks. Then when your investments start to earn an interest, you can buy those perks off your interest.

It may seem very obvious to you but how many people (including you, if I may ask) actually start working and buy shares, investment properties, money market instruments before they buy a car, rent and furnish a nice house? Or how many people build a house for rent before they build the one that they will live in? And yet, this is the simple principle expounded in this book and in the book "millionaire next door". It may suprise you to find out that common sense is not so common afterall.

You seem to think that just going out and doing something is the key to financial success. I hate to burst your bubble but if that was really the case, then everybody would be rich. At some point in time if you want to be successful, you will need to educate yourself about the world's economy and how it works. Warren Buffett didn't get rich by blindly investing in any stock that took his fancy, or taking stock tips from friends or public forums - he studied the stock market, he went to school and then he read books (I would know, I have READ about Warren Buffet). This is not to say that Rich Dad Poor Dad is an investing textbook but your general disdain for learning from others through reading is just really surprising to me.

Like the chinese proverb "Experience is the best teacher" not vol 1, vol 2 or games and 1 and 2.
By the way, the Chinese were wrong - Other people's experience is the best teacher. Ask the Chinese themselves - they got where they are today by copying American knowledge and technology.

CareerRe: Can You Describe Your Job? by Consultant(f): 4:32am On May 02, 2007
I am a Human Capital consultant. My areas of specialization are organizational development, change management and training. Someone said consultants are incapable of describing their jobs in one sentence, and they're probably right. The gist of it is, I work on different clients - right now my focus is on pharmaceutical companies - and help them do things like organization design, performance management, training development, and implementing HR systems.

I would say the greatest challenge is that as a consultant, your clients look up to you to provide business solutions so you have to constantly update your knowledge. I read a lot of business books, magazines and industry publications, attend conferences and belong to a number of professional organizations.

I enjoy my job - I get to travel, I change clients regularly so it doesn't get boring and I get to meet top executives of companies and make lots of contacts, and the pay is good.
FamilyRe: Like Will Smith, Would You Consider an Open Marriage? by Consultant(f): 1:24am On Apr 19, 2007
Below are excerpts from interviews with Will and Jada Smith on this subject

Source: http://www.blender.com/guide/articles.aspx?id=1604

I read somewhere that you said you had an open marriage. If that’s true, can I get Jada’s number?

I never said that I had an open marriage. What I said is that our relationship is based on 100% truth. That, no matter what, there’s never going to be something that I would say or do that I wouldn’t tell her first. And then the interviewer said, well, what if you were with Eva Mendes and you wanted to … I said, well, I would say to my wife—if that situation presented itself—I would say, “Honey, I want to sleep with Eva Mendes, is that OK?” And, you know, she’d probably say no. But the point was, how can you expect to be successful in a relationship if you’re not telling your partner the 100% truth? The fact that the interviewer could take that in the direction he took it showed me where he is in his relationship, you know?

Source: http://www.indielondon.co.uk/film/hitch_smithQ&A.html

Q. Do you have an open marriage?
A. Well fidelity in a marriage is huge – you’ve got to have that or you’ve got nothing; 100% unadulterated honesty is the only way that you can ever truly be successful, but don’t believe everything you read in the newspapers, and don’t believe everything that you right in the newspapers!

Jada Pinkett Smith claims she doesn't care if husband Will Smith fancies other women.

The sexy actress says her actor husband can look at other beauties all he wants - as long as he doesn't touch

She said: "I love the fact that Will has a genuine appreciation for women He's a real man and if he sees an attractive woman it is how it is

"And you know, I think it kind of enhances the appreciation he has for me I am the chosen one"

Jada also laughed off rumours - sparked by Will - that the couple have an open marriage

She told Britain's The Sun newspaper: "We do not have an open marriage He wishes! He might fantasise about that, but don't you worry about that!"
FamilyRe: A Birth Story - Experiences Of A First Time Mother by Consultant(op): 12:56am On Apr 19, 2007
do you think there is a way the pregnant mother can be made to sleep until it was time to push to avoid feeling the pain?
Well, it won't exactly put you to sleep but an epidural does remove the pain associated with childbirth. It has its risks though, which is why I opted not to have one.

Curious about one thing though, is childbirth as painful as people paint it to be?
If its that painful how come my mama had to go through that painful experience TEN times?
My dear, childbirth is painful o. It's just that like all pain, it is temporary and after a while you forget. Plus the joy of motherhood overshadows the pain of childbirth. As for your mother, all I can say is she is one strong woman.
Travel AdsRe: Cheapest Way To Ship Goods From USA To Nigeria? by Consultant(f): 9:53pm On Apr 03, 2007
I shipped some Movie cameras i bought from B&H in Newyork to lagos via Global Express (USPS) there was a $70 difference between them and UPS. It took 28 days . but it arrived Lagos in one piece. It was deposited at General Post Office marina. NIPOST is the official partners of USPS/GLOBAL EXPRESS. They in turn sent a slip to the person i sent the cameras to who now went to collect them.
The customs office there (GPO , marina) asked for N35k which was eventually brought down to N7k,
If you are brave enough to leave your goods in the hands of NIPOST like i did, then try USPS.
Worse still you can't track the goods when they leave America.
GASP!!! Don't do it! The first time i tried this my parcel arrived. The second time, it never saw the light of day. USPS does not guarantee the arrival of its Global Express packages so you have no recourse if the goods don't get there.

I'd hate to think that my becoming a teacher would lead some people ahem davidylan to assume that my capacity to make intelligent conversation was below that of the average person. We know you are a PhD but abeg, get over yourself already, afterall, there are teachers with PhD too.  cheesy
FamilyRe: Balancing Your Job And Your Home (Wives) by Consultant(f): 1:00am On Mar 31, 2007
First of all hotchic, i am really curious to know why you are confused about this issue because your profile says you are 16 years old, or is that wishful thinking? smiley

Anyway, balancing anything in this world is challenging. As a woman, you need to determine what your priorities are - if it is your family then you learn to put that first when you need to make career decisions. My second advice to you would be to marry an understanding husband. With a good man, you can both work out any challenges you have and make it work.
