Recently, I have noticed that a lot of girls seem to check in and out of relationships like it’s a game of chess while some others just go ahead and double date. They often say ‘I have a school boyfriend’, ‘house boyfriend’ and ‘serious boyfriend’. So I sat down to think critically about the reason(s) why a young girl might not want to stick with one man. You have too many guys with almost the same qualities asking you out at the same time and you lack the ability to say NO.
You are so physically attractive that almost every guy you come across wants something more than just a friendship with you….making you a ‘hot cake’
You solemnly believe in and abide by the mantra “Do not put all your eggs in one basket”
You are greedy and want to eat your cake and have it.

For the longest time, I couldn’t tell the difference between “I love you” and “I’m in love with you”. To me, they were synonymous. At some point, they even became mutually exclusive; one being unable to exist without the other but being able to stand on its own once birthed. And for a while, I was convinced I had it all figured out. I thought being ‘in love’ was the encompassing of the emotion you felt and only you can feel; your 2am and 3pm thoughts of this person that had you believing in happy ever after, how (s)he made you feel…complete.

While ‘loving’ was the proof of being in love, the actions you took to show that you’re in love, the things you do out of love. But as I grew up, I realized that there was a difference. I don’t know how I knew, maybe it was the sense of injustice in me at the fact that I’d say “I love you” to a random superman that saves my iPhone from making acquaintance with the floor as I trip and still utter the same three words to the girl of my dreams that made me desperate to believe that I had it wrong and I knew if I ever was going to have my own happily ever after, I had to find the true meaning behind those two phrases.

My boyfriend and I met in a strange place under strange circumstances, too long and to too funny to tell the story. I thought he was “the one” the moment I met him. We go to different Unis, and while visiting me one day last year, he stayed in my room while I was in class.

I came back to my room to find him very upset. He questioned me about things he could only know if he read my secret blog. A few weeks ago, news got to Nigerian Twitter of a young woman who, on her wedding day, presented a certificate of her ‘purity’ to her father who is a pastor.

First off, I just want to call all manners and shapes and sizes of BULLSHIT. Complete and total. It’s so ridiculously funny; I don’t even know where to begin to explain this certificate of said ‘purity’. What even struck me was the smile on the girl and her father’s face, like “OMG! This is such a memorable moment in our lives”, I wish I could tell them that it really isn’t.

Secondly, why on this dear ozone layer depleting earth is a twenty two year old giving her father a certificate of ‘purity’? Like, to prove what exactly? Let’s be real for a bit.

She obviously must have made some promise to her dad that she was going to stay away from sex until she got married, possibly because her dad is a pastor. So if she really wanted to prove that she can abstain from sex, why marry at twenty two? Why not wait to marry at 30 to really ‘prove’ her point about ‘purity’? I mean, 8 years of additional ‘pressure’ is something right? Ok, maybe that just sounds mean, let’s look at another point.

So… I had made a decision that I was going to write a book. The contents would be very explicit and it would touch on all sorts of subjects from masturbation to loss of virginity. The second decision that I hade made was that I would pose provocatively for the marketing material. I would get my naked body out and only conceal my private parts with a tablet, glancing at my privates you would see the book cover. This was all well and good except for a few problems.
