I wish he really can be the president but north will never allow him because they are scared of him. What were his landmark achievements in the NBA and Ondo state? For me, Fashola fits more and has some sort of deeper national configuration, with all the other attributes that we have mentioned. Aketi, for me, is more of a regionalist. The anti open grazing law supported by him and most Southern governors proves this. This is a very sensitive issue. It is more of a North versus South affair. Whether it is good or not isn't the subject of discussion. Restricted / defined grazing areas; herders - farmers documentation & enhanced interfaces; greater engagement & responsibility for communities as well as traditional institutions etc, would be a much more nationalistic approach. I have lived everywhere in Nigeria, and I know exactly what I am saying. Nigeria is much more complex than many Nigerians can fathom. There has never being only one solution to a problem, no matter how complex. |

Prenonjebose: Do you think the problem of farmers and herders is restricted to the South. Many central northern states are having same problem with herders. Have you been listening to the rhetorics from Miyetti Allah on clashes between their members and farmers. That age long practice of grazing is no longer tenable in the face prevailing climate change. The action of moving cattle around farm lands was prevalent in the past because of the seeming respect between herders and local farmers. It is clear that this understanding is broken. Before southern governors took this stand, what did the umbrella body for herders do in the face of farmers outcries. Rather, they were either silent or confrontational. At best, they denied outrightly the activities of their members. The governors were almost too slow in taking any action. They can graze around anywhere up north if allowed or condoned. Have you asked yourself why the cost of most foodstuff from the north has skyrocketed. Inspite of that, Southerners do not have a problem with that as long as farmers in the south can enjoy an enabling environment to dare go to farms. I have seen first hand, the impact of defiant grazing on farmlands inspite of the community leaders effort to call the herders to order. The leader of the herders categorically refused to pay compensation or move out of the community. There is no reasoning with them. The action of 16 governors of the south is well informed, and that is irrespective of their individual policy misjudgements or otherwise. I disagree. The action of the 16 governors is entirely irrational. How much food comes from to South to the rest of the country? That simply tells you that this isn't about grazing and cattle herding. Cost of food from the North is high majorly due to insurgency, covid and flooding of vast farmlands in the North. How many cattle and farmlamds are even in the South that are said to be destroyed? |

Prenonjebose: You think restriction can work. The inability of herders to understand and accept that farmers have a right over their farms brought this problem upon the country. They are uneducated, have a fixation on this archaic cultural practice while exuding a nauseating aura dominance. The ban of open grazing is the first step in the right direction of giving farmers a semblance of protection from the menace of herders. You talk of cost of meat, while forgetting that cost of foodstuff is already high because of this problem. Besides, protein is not found only in meat. Other sources of protein abounds in fish and crops. What won't work? It certainly will, if community and traditional institutions wake up to their responsibilities. I will say and defend it anywhere, insecurity will continue to remain a major concern until communities and traditional institutions are strengthened. One does not need formal education to understand that he isn't supposed to destroy properties owned by others. Frameworks could be created at the very lowest levels to handle cases involving farmers and herders. Spare me the talk about other protein sources, who doesn't know that. I never implied that there weren't other protein sources. Have you asked yourself why over 85% of agricultural produce consumed in the country come from the North, despite the prevalence of open herding activities there? Why are more of the agricultural produce not coming from the South, since it has less of the open grazing activities? As far as I am concerned, this new law only demonstrates weakness and incapacity on the part of governors of the South, in exploring a more robust and encompassing solution to handling the issue. It shouldn't be some sort the South against the North kind of approach. This comes off more like what I learned recently about Gov. Okowa outlawing the use of side curtains by tricycle riders in Asaba for security reasons....what do you call that? He could as well have asked that doors be yanked off all vehicles too...isn't that a clear display of leadership incapacity? |

Well, I'm not surprised because he got to that seat through the court. He is not useless. I think it is the wise thing to do. Open grazing areas should rather be restricted and relations between herders and farmers regulated instead. No one group in the country should expunge the other, under any guise. warripekin: This supreme Court governor, has proven himself to be very stupid and idiotic. Any way, he is making attempt to satiate his master's who put in power. He is not stupid. I think it is a better idea to strictly regulate activities of herders and farmers than outrightly ruling out open grazing in the vast uninhabited lands across the country. To very large extent, open grazing can be said to be beneficial in ensuring affordable protein for Nigeria's vast low class population. I will rather support restricted open grazing areas in states and regulation of farmer-herders relations than outrigh ban of open grazing. Ohaneze should go and sit down. |

Lol.
'Generally unsafe'...have you now modified by adding generally to unsafe? It is no longer 'only unsafe'.
Perhaps, you thought you were talking to a school boy.
Three terrorist groups you said? That only demonstrates the quantum of security challenges Buhari is dealing with. Jonathan, according to you, had only one but couldn't deal with it.
I observed that you've added Abuja to your list of places Boko Haram terrorized under Jonathan... Is Abuja now in the NE?
Are you saying that Boko Haram is responsible for the skirmishes of insecurity in a few states in the country, and perhaps all over the world?
Who then is responsible for the relative peace and measurable security in the other parts?
You want to know how Buhari has better secured Nigeria? Stay glued to your TV and watch the Afghanistan situation. You said it yourself, three terrorist groups and we are still standing very tall. Who cares about the senseless rankings by the West? Didn't they also predict that Corona virus will ravage Africa, leaving corpses and carcasses littering its entire surface area? How far? Man be God?
Was the US military not in Afghanistan when it crumbled to the Talibans?
Where is Sunday Igboho? Nnamdi Kanu? Abubakar Shakau? Leaders of your three terrorist groups...
Senseless ranking by the west you say.. but if the ranking has been positive for Buhari it would have been great? Pray tell which state in Nigeria is peaceful? How is it skitmitches ? Insecurities that is ravagaing everything along it part.
You say 3 Terrorist groups shows the quantum of security challenges Buhari is dealing with and Jonathan folded against one.
But no, I put it to you that for Jonathan to make sure it only one security issue with dealing with shows he is better than Buhari in all ramifications.. Buhari can't even deal with his family issues how then can he deal with Nigerias.
Nigeria is being ravaged by insecurities and Mr President is doing nothing and here you're supporting him cause you're a Muslim. I'm disappointed. Now, I can see your angle. You are a Christian and that's why you are supporting Jonathan despite the disasters he caused while in office. Unlike you, I do not take all rankings from the West seriously. It has to be measurable and rational. For your information, I am neither a Christian nor a Muslim. Stop making unfounded assumptions. Most parts of Nigeria are peaceful. You can't say that a state is not peaceful because of insecurity in one or two communities in that state. If we are to judge by your question of which States are peaceful in Nigeria; I'd ask which place is peaceful in the world? Tell me one country that is peaceful, in absolute terms? Peace can only be relative. Enugu, Osun, Akwa Ibom, Cross Rivers, Gombe, Ekiti, Niger, Jigawa, Lagos and several other states are largely peaceful. |
