YES, absolutely. Again what is wrong with that? mind your business. If you get irritated over someone else's application or inquiry then it's time to take a break. Leave nairaland for a while and interact with real people so you can have a clue of other people's diverse backgrounds. Learn to identify what is and what is not your problem to get irked about. I called you out on this the other time.

Deep seated convictions for 'fit' for an undergraduate degree cheesy Are you going to pay for him after the fit?
100kobo:

This is the sort of question that irk me. Will you apply to the school because they hand out scholarships or out of deep seated convictions that they are the best fit for your career goals?

Good day guys

Please I have a quick question.

How does the WES thing work?

You can read the FAQs on their website

Do I need to upload my transcript to their website or do I send them the official transcript?
Official documents, sent by the issuing institution(s), are required after you must have payed for the evaluation.

Also, after the evaluation, do they send a copy to me or just to the school of my choice?
Those are options that you could pay for.

It's quite urgent please. Thanks in anticipation.
WES evaluation takes time so it can't be that urgent.

"You shouldn't be condescending" isn't a rude statement so I wonder why you take it as such. Leave it at that (the highlighted) then. The internet is replete with blueprints for applications, interviews or whatever and the majority of the pages here. If you are not willing to share yours, fine and good, your prerogative. I only highlighted a part of your post, while still acknowledging positives, and commented.

Aren't we all copycats? How many people knew about international admissions if not for other peoples success stories.

Point to note again, diversity continues to factor increasingly in university admissions to 'aid' minorities or improve global profile. So sometimes, it might not really be how better your application and interview is compared to the rest of the pool. You might just be filling a 'minority' quota.

So, nothing wrong in 'following' the worst that could happen is a denied admission and lost application fee.
100kobo:

I have not discouraged anybody from applying, rather I am advising that people eschew laziness. You don't follow my blueprint because it may not suit you. Design yours!

Regarding the bolded, you must learn to choose your words aptly. A faceless forum does not require you to churn out rude remarks behind your keyboard. Let me stop so far.

Isn't this the whole point of this thread, to follow a blueprint? While you may have some points, you shouldn't be condescending about it. The outcome will be what it is and the only sin is to not try at all.

As a matter of fact, some institutions are more diverse and receptive towards international applicants - you could even go further delineate into international as in a first country or a third country - some use quotas and some leave a level playing field regardless of nationality. A program I looked at explicitly stated that they've had only 2 international students enrolled in the past 10 years. Many, I'm sure, would not be that forthright. You also have to consider that applications cost money and it is only rational to follow what seems the most successful for a given demographic. Saying people should not apply to schools that accept Nigerians with full waivers and scholarship is being disingenuous on your part.

Nothing wrong in applying to 'certain schools' at all. The worst that could happen is a denied admission.
100kobo:

Mr A comes here to share his interview success and how he got waivers. Mr B, the lazy opportunist, quickly inquires of Mr A about this 'certain school' and the next thing he applies without carrying out due research. Tell me how Mr B will make it during interview when all he did was apply because somebody else has succeeded there. Most people are simply copycats. And what they fail to understand is that interviews are case by case and conducted on the merits of what each candidate is able to present.

PS: This thread is not here to spoonfeed you, but to give you a lead. Be smart, be proactive, get busy with research.

Congratulations! It would be nice if you shared your GRE and admissions experience.

Hello there, I just got an offer of admission for an MS program at the University of Southern Mississippi, which also comes with a full tuition waiver and stipends. The sum of the assistantship is more than the estimated cost of study for a whole academic year. I will like to know if I still need to send an account statement with a balance exceeding the estimated cost of study or not. Thanks

You need to include your SSCE in compliance with the new policy as for the transfer, send them an email, like I did, on the contact WES form requesting for transfer of evaluation for expedited processing. You don't have to start over again.
gobby:
pls what if i have evaluated my results before now but in WES USA, so how do i go about it, will they just transfer the result to WES CANADA or i will start all over again?

How long did it you prepare for it?
lexychuks:

Won’t lie, I didn’t write it well. I was terrified while solving maths, I got a simple question but forgot how to solve it. Smartly however I left it to focus on other questions. I ignored the data interpretation with the aim of coming back after I was done with the others. I did my best even though I knew I wasn’t my usual sef. I finished on time and selected submit scores. Result came out Verbal = 155 Quantitative = 160. Total =315.

Conclusion. GRE no be beans o. Please study for at least two months and also the GOD factor is key. Thanks to the originator and elders of this thread. I gained a lot from the experiences of people here. I hope my experience would help someone too in the future.

Especially when your accent is entirely different and easily noticeable grin I can imagine. it gets better with practice I guess. If Beyonce, after all these years, still gets nervous before every stage performance, who are we?
If you are interested in a PhD wouldn't it be better if you applied this season to other schools for fall 19 so you would be able to transition immediately rather than wait if you don't get funding from your current department. I'd suggest you talk it over with your advisor.
Scholastica16:

I am still doing a masters primarily because that is what PTDF is funding me for. Whether I would transition into a PhD on completion of it is definitely in the offing but God may lead me elsewhere grin.

I am actually mandated to undergo a teaching practicum which is a requirement for all grad students here and I must say I am not thrilled. I have taught once (as part of the syllabus for the class) and will need to teach 2 more times before the semester ends. This is just a training. By next semester I will be randomly assigned to assist in a class teaching - either during office hours or even in class. I am not looking forward to it at all because I am a very shy person -in person.

Same egos rate federal universities with antiquated libraries and systems over CU that is in record time making remarkable strides. Save for their priggishness, and fundamentalist approach, CU is a very good university for acquiring knowledge.

We could argue about the so called roadside unis in Europe but I digress. Yes, universities are not businesses to yield ROI like the model nigerian private universities use but at this time in our history, more universities are always better than few.

HigherEd:

You are quite right. For instance, when Covenant attempted to start medicine they understudied their foreign counterparts, but when they saw the requirements of creating a World Class Medical program they simply backed out - temporarily. Yet, Covenant is more or less the richest institution in the country. A small replica of University Of Wisconsin - Madison's molecular laboratory at CU cost over 250 million naira.
So Universities are fund consuming machines and i would understand if many of them here find it hard to compete with the foreign ones. Nevertheless, there are roadside universities in Europe and USA too. I believe in the next few years Covenant and soon to be Dangote university would be Nigeria's flagship universities.

An unaccredited school is what it is, unaccredited. It doesn't count. Perhaps you mean unranked, even so, I can guarantee that you would be shocked at what is at students' disposal in the West, particularly in the sciences. I understand the US has a lopsided capitalist sort of tertiary education unlike in most Europe but no way in hell would I choose UI over an unranked university for any STEM degree. It's a case of look at the department you are going into and find out how much money it gets, then you can really compare and see where these universities really are.

"don't mind these oyibo people that always tell us about atoms that nobody has seen" said a professor of Chemistry in a federal university, perhaps fancying his sense of humour or simply flaunting his ignorance like a badge.

As for getting grades, the outcome of universities are more student based than how good a lecturer is, even in the best universities globally. Moreso, in graduate/postgraduate degrees. a lot of nigerian lecturers are notorious in that regard, probably cos they're poorly paid, who knows.

No basis, honestly. I have travelled a little to know what I'm talking about. Rwanda is currently making giant strides in education, and Ghana has always been solid. South Africa, a world apart.

The rankings can deceive foreigners who have never gone through university in Nigeria but we wey dey here know. Nigeria has a penchant for making otherwise seamless processes seem like rocket science. From JAMB to registration of courses or checking of results to NYSC to even getting your own money from a bank. Perhaps things are different in the private unis or generally changing but I don't think so, not with my WES experience.

Why on earth would anyone, given a choice, choose to do science in Nigeria - that hasn't figured out how to be constantly powered - as opposed to learning in the US where minimum standards have to be met and opportunities to see what you learn come to life.

For the liberal arts and social sciences, that I don't know about. UI could be better for the context of what is being studied. eg. Nigerian Law, Culture and languages would be best studied in Nigeria.

Apologies, I like writing plenty.
Postfut:

True. But I think it makes sense to try as much as possible to apply the best school your profile affords you.

Going to UI is far better than going to an unaccredited school in the USA

How many of the US institutions have you been to? 70% you say cheesy Universities that are part of striking ASUU undecided I understand if you want to stoke your ego but on what basis is UI better than any even lowest ranked US university that could be a1,000 times better funded than UI?

Looking into STEM fields, what equipments are in UI and how much access is a regular student granted? XRD, NMR, MS or MM modelling software. For chemistry in labs abroad, acetone is used to wash glassware, like it's free and you could use up infinite amount of solvents learning the ropes for flash chromatography.

I'm sure you're trolling, if not then I wonder. How much goes into education in Nigeria? How much external funds does UI get how much is internally generated and how often and much do the staff get payed and owed? A cursory look at universities website tells a lot and when did they start using one. I suggest you read an article by Pius Adesanmi on Education and universities in Nigeria. How many foreign students are in Nigerian unis, you think if it was so good even in West Africa there wouldn't be lots of foreigners here?

Say what you know and be proud of your uni but don't talk about what you know nothing about. If you compare universities like high schools, based on students and alumni performance as a result of teaching, perhaps. but universities are mainly the birthplace of new knowledge and you damn need a whole lot of money for that.

I'd rather send my ward to Ghana for an education than Nigeria. Simple transcript and responding to emails they need genuises for that.

** There's a researcher who collaborated with a professional association of scientists to send old model lab instruments that have been replaced to African universities for very subsidised rates, sometimes even for free. They occasionally come around to teach your uni professors how to operate old low resolution models of spectrometers.

Nigerian universities are based on rote memorisation that's why AW on GRE record low scores. We were never taught or encouraged to question, just follow, do as I do. That's why you have professors with huge egos abusing students in Nigeria.

You can memorise how an electron microscope works but can you deduce the principles behind it and why one is needed in the first place to build a better and more affordable based on paucity of funds in the 3rd world. Raman was Indian and developed Raman Spectroscopy in India and won the Nobel Prize that's how you measure universities (Places where knowledge is generated that becomes useful for future inventions) how do you do that with hungry lecturers, can you even do research without funds? but even then our tertiary institutions began in the 60s, while universities have been in existence way before the 10th century.

Tip for you: go to a university where there is more money per member than big ego 'prestigious' universities that strike over workers emoluments.

kylexy61:

Better than only 15%, which implies that Ibadan should be ranked somewhere below 10,000th in the world. Come on, you can't really think that lowly of the best unis in Nigeria. Times Higher Education ranks it around 800-ish. Not even 1000 oo.

Well, no need to argue.

Ok I would submit all my applications before Mid-December.

How's your program (PhD?) going, Do you get to do some teaching?

Scholastica16:

Anything before January is still good. January is not even bad at all but it favors people who have very good stats and are in communication with faculty already. Early bird gets the worm works outside the region I just described.

Thanks. When do you think is late, my GRE is on the 14th
Scholastica16:

You have everything you require. Just take the GRE soon and make early applications. Take note however, that the GRE is just one aspect. You will need to make sure the other aspects of your application are strong.

As per schools, the schools you have up there are very good. Put more thought into it. Use LinkedIn to get a hold of some members of the faculty you are considering and try to contact professors where necessary. Not all will respond but you must take it in your stride. Most of them are very busy people.

Thanks. I'll go over it. I plan to begin applications right after my GRE in November. Looking to meet all priority deadlines by December. Hopefully smiley
Timotee:

Looking through your application profile, you have quite a reasonably good profile. Don't be deterred by the admission rates that you see listed for programmes. Just choose a mix of programmes, some top and some moderate rankings and make sure to have really very good recommendation letters (where the recommender personalizes it and highlights in detail your research work and research potential) and a well written personal statement. Try applying to at least 6 programmes to maximize your chances of admission.
Here's a link from the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy that gives a detailed list of graduate degree programs for Pharmaceutical Sciences and Medicinal Chemistry (https://www.aacp.org/resource/graduate-degree-programs-pharmacy-and-pharmaceutical-sciences-north-america) It may serve as a guide.

I'd like some assistance with regard to choosing Universities in the US or Canada for admission and funding. I am not shooting for the stars and have modest and realist expectations as I've spent over $1000 already - exams, transcripts, and evaluation cry without even starting any applications. Looking to add another $1000 for application fees and official documents posting Lord! cry

Where do I start? I want to go for a PhD in Medicinal Chemistry / Pharmaceutical Science but it seems quite competitive from what I see on admission rates. I'm interested in Drug discovery and synthesis areas. Anyone with Uni suggestions, please.

My Profile:

GPA: 3.25/4 (WES)
Masters GPA: 3.42/4 (WES)
Tests: IELTS 7.5; GRE Chemistry (Oct 27)
GRE General (Nov 14)
Research Experience: +2years uni thesis projects + research internship abroad that led to a conference publication and poster in Geneva.
Work Experience: QC chemist 2010 (Ind Training) + here and there med lab rat experiences. Unrelated work experience afterwards.
