Education / Re: How To Achieve High Scores On The GRE by CptCharlesVane: 5:27am On Oct 25, 2023
Wow! This was me mixing my excitement over my offer with my disappointment from Buhari’s re-election. It’s crazy how things have degenerated in Nigeria.

So many significant life events and milestones years later, it’s almost incredible looking back but I dreamed about this! and life is much better over here.

I want to encourage anyone left on this thread to keep at it, don’t get discouraged, and keep dreaming and believing.
CptCharlesVane:
Hey Guys!

I applied to 6 unis in total for PhDs. All apps sent in and completed before Christmas '18.
Chemistry (Accepted; Science scholar $30k (stipend + GA) no tuition )
UMinnesota - Medicinal Chemistry (Rejected)
UIowa - Medicinal and Natural Product Chemistry (awaiting)
Texas Tech Health Sciences Center - Pharmaceutical Science (Accepted)
Virginia Commonwealth Uni - Pharmaceutical Science/Med Chem (awaiting)
Washington State Uni - Chemistry (Rejected)

Acceptance mail came on Friday but somehow I missed it. Stumbled on it yesterday, and Voila! a pleasant surprise, especially after seeing the demoralizing result updates of the elections and realisation of the trajectory of the future of Nigeria, on the way to electing a senile, insensitive, barely literate cattle herder with a dubious WAEC qualification that has no regard for the law or court orders. I want a better Nigeria, and that's not being selfish, and this election was an opportunity for the people to have made a statement but what do we have?

Anyway, I'm almost certain I'll be in the US this fall, haven't really decided yet, as I hope to get at least another offer, but doing Chemistry in the heart of the big apple is a fascinating prospect that I fancy, pretty much why I applied.

I didn't contact any faculty member by the way, I however corresponded with the program officer/coordinator especially since my GRE quants was below the required 50th percentile and he advised I should still apply. My GRE Chemistry was also abysmal percentile-wise, although I got a little over 50% of the questions correct.

I would say praise god or whatever if I believed in any of that. But it can't be only god and prayers that produce desirable results, however, I would still say I was quite fortunate this time. Being my third application cycle, first two were focused mainly at European universities. Serendipity, providence or whatever the nomenclature caused me to stumble upon this thread and blessed be the day that I read experiences of people here with funded offers, thus rekindling my aspiration for a PhD scholarship and directing my energy where the money is, the US.

Good fortunes to the fall '17 and '18 set who left their experiences here that are still of tremendous benefit to all and sundry, High Star for una!

Thanks to everyone who responded to my posts and inquiries and also those who aspire for an education by taking the GRE. You never know who you may inspire to dream again and go for opportunities for a better life.

Keep contributing!

Blessed be the ones that have contributed and still do here. Y'all should be President of Nigeria.

TL;DR Got a funded admission offer, the first after 2 rejections.

My appointment was for 8am this morning. Got here 7:35 and I’m done grin. It was easy peasy. You get into that first check point area where there are lots of chairs and they check your old visa, receipt, appointment confirmation and Ds 160 confirmation page. They collect your passport or passports and your passport photo only and tell you have a nice day. That’s all.

I don't know if this might help someone out there.

I am South African, our IW started in Nov after travel ban was lifted.

I called call the embassy call center, told them I qualify for IW but can't schedule app as it showed no appointments, they then asked for my Ds160, and asked me to log in , upon logging in there was a page with 3 qualifying questions
E.g
1. has your visa expired in Less than 48months? ( bear in mind our visa validity is 10yrs)

2. Did you capture biometrics at the embassy?

3. Are you applying under the same vis a category?

That's how I was able to get IW letter and scheduled DHL drop off & pick up.

So contact your embassy

First, you write really well.

I thought I should chime in to share my experience in a similar situation. I’m like you but a guy, quite ambitious and love information about everything and opportunities. So, I kind of understand how disappointing it is when a partner has no desire to do the bare minimum even for their own best interest. Sometimes, it gets overbearing and demoralizing, but Love is mysterious.

With time/age, I’ve come to understand that people are not the same and even if they become who you think you’d like them to be, the process of becoming often makes them lose the essence about them that made you like/love them in the first place.

With my SO, I’ve never met anyone so kind and charming, always listens to me with grace, respectful and outright adores me. Even in my critical analysis I have yet to discover the special things that I do or that I am to deserve all of these. She will go to the ends of the world if it will make me happy, but she still has a mind of her own and can walk away from it all. Her peace of mind is paramount. This I realize is truly rare, and must admit that I’m so grateful for her and us, because with her I’ve realized that many times, all one needs is support and loyalty from being in love.

Yet, she is so unlike me in terms of dreams, aspirations, how children should be raised, investments etc etc and I’ve also come to understand that her life experience has been different; as our experiences are what largely shapes us and many of our aspirations and ambition. Not acknowledging this usually leads people to project their insecurities (eg. fear of poverty) on others in relationships, and this is not the best way to approach relationships.

So, I have come to use such motivational speeches for myself, towards my development. I have also improved my communication to make her understand my POV without making her feel inadequate while acknowledging her free will to either take or reject counsel without me becoming salty over it. I love the support I get from her anyway so it’s all good.

I also decided to engage in specialized or otherwise intellectually demanding conversations with my colleagues or other friends as I’ve stopped looking to derive all my interests in a single individual, because it is just self-centered. Perhaps, these discussions are not so important in the grand scheme of things, like we’ve believed them to be.

The nature of my profession leaves me mostly around highly intelligent people, but I’m not oblivious that such people can be big trouble to convince, and many times one needs to make an argument to have them do something, even mundane things. They can be very difficult when misunderstood. Thinking of myself, if roles were reversed, best believe I will and can never approach a relationship the same way my SO does. But I think it’s beautiful now when I think about it.

Before we met, I would have preferred ‘someone intelligent, ambitious, hardworking etc ‘ but now, if this ideal person comes along I’ll gladly pass up on the offer, again and again.

Love is powerful, and I think knowledge of building spaceships and nuclear warheads pales in comparison to kindness and honesty in relationships, even as I like learning about such things.
It’s been many years now and, honestly, I wouldn’t have it anyway else.

Should you call off your relationship? It’s your decision to make. If it is an intelligent and ambitious person you truly want, you should know that they also come with their bag of chips, worse is when you find yourself as the less intelligent and ambitious one. They also can in turn can project their insecurities. It’s hard to find intelligent people already, but genuinely honest and kind people are even more rare.

Ginger yourself to become what you think your boyfriend should do for himself to be respected by your parents. They are your parents, not his. Besides, It becomes a win-win situation, in the event that your relationship goes south.
Acmepreneur:

But I love him very much, and I'm not sure I can date someone else again or have feelings for someone else. His love is already spread in my brain

I saved 19,000 Canadian Dollars in 8 months working minimum wage jobs, before gladfully I got out of minimum wage jobs. But that's not the point. The point here is that even if you work 80 hours weekly, 7 days a week for one year, which is kinda impossible cause body no be wood, at the rate of $16, you WILL NOT make 100,000 that year. Let's do the maths. 80 hours (1 week) times16 dollars is1,280 dollars. Times that by 52 week. That is 66,560, mind you that is before taxes. To the OP of this thread, I get that you want to motivate people and honestly I've devoted my spare time to reading your thread believing in you until I saw the crap about making 100,000 in a year. Please don't come here exaggerating big figures; I hope you were exaggerating, other wise you just think the people on Nairaland are stupid cause we are Nigerians.

Many African women are victims of FGM including some here giving advice. All non-mutilated women would grow to love sex and pleasure from clitoral stimulation naturally but how e no go taya person dem cut the whole clitoris comot for small pikin? and how would a woman without one understand a foreign woman with one or better yet advise them?
OP didn’t even read like she enjoys or has ever enjoyed sex, just married the guy as a bestie for only gist ; no dīcking cheesy

Secondly I do not think you people has started having kids, bc when he stays awake sometimes bc of the cries of his child in the night, he won't always have stamina for sex unless he is jobless.

Leave her, she’ll soon join ‘all men cheat and men are scum’ gang. I think the perception in Africa that women don’t like sex and are not supposed to like sex cannot be unrelated to the high rate of female genital mutilation and religion.
For all we know, OP must have been a victim of FGM and have been raised to see sex as a duty to create children. Even sounds like she never ever enjoyed sex with her husband and doesn’t even have a clue that women love sex naturally and love feeling sexy especially by men who really desire them.
djon78:

Me and you who is discouraging faithful men? With the way you talk on this issue can you even maintain a faithful man.
A woman that doesn't even know how to talk. You maintain a faithful man with a befitting character. Character is the beauty of a woman, not one that talks anyhow.
Family / Re: How Do I Handle A Husband Who Wants To Have Sex Almost Everyday? by CptCharlesVane: 11:39pm On Apr 27, 2020
Honestly, I’m not much of a cheating type but if my wife believes and does so much as you say up to recommending a sex timetable, I’ll ensure she regrets that decision for the rest of the marriage. She will beg for attention until we dissolve the marriage. You think you’re doing your faithful husband a favour by making him beg for sex?

Sex is meant to be enjoyed, more so by women if not during this pandemic it wouldn’t be women all over the internet dancing naked and talking about sex all the time. if the woman doesn’t enjoy it then maybe she needs to check her history. Many women in Africa have been genitally mutilated so that may be one of the reasons and that’s why I really take opinions of women on such less seriously because nobody knows who has a full clitoris and those without yet every woman’s advice should hold the same weight.

Don’t come and spoil somebody’s groove with duty duty sex. It isn’t attractive to healthy men with active sex drives. Again monogamy is very unnatural but it is just one of the many things that distinguishes us from other primates so we do it anyway especially as it is good for raising children, but no man with low libido married many wives even then for mere achievement grin what about poor people? Don’t they take many wives? Or they also think achievements, why are they selective then if they don’t intend to sleep with them as much as they desire?

Pound for pound no man with excessively high libido can match his equivalent in a woman but monogamy, marriage, relationships often is about compromise. Personally, I avoid girls who see sex as something only a man wants that’s why I never signed up for the ‘no sex before marriage’ clause. We’ve been enjoying sex with other people before we got married so don’t come and dull my life and expect faithfulness for lifeless negotiated sex.

It takes tremendous discipline to remain faithful to one woman, especially as an attractive and desirable man and trust me comments like yours would make many seemingly good men laugh because you really don’t know what you’re asking for. Some people are sex addicts, while some are too busy to have sex all the time, but every healthy straight man loves sex and would want it as much as possible with the woman he’s attracted to. so please be guided.
LilMissFavvy:
The men sleeping around do so cuz your society permits them, their wives do not have a say......(some wives). I spoke my mind and you got absolutely no business to call me out. As for your stupiddd advice, keep it for your sisters, thank you. Your kinds are the type that preach and encourage cheating, it does not occur to you that everyone, male and female can actually develop self Descipline.

What about the black doctors, you ask? When the black Nigerian doctor thinks like you (highlighted) that would be the same reason he would take the ventilator off you to die in order to save a white patient or the same reason he would not respond to emergencies of ‘pant sagging thug’ black teenagers that look the same as your children and nephews.

You guys are really pathetic, honestly. What has Nigeria contributed to the world? Who are the role models in Nigeria? Would you be in the US (if you are, anyway) if these people you despise didn’t stay and fight for the liberties you seem to enjoy? LESS OPPRESSION IS NOT THE SAME AS NO OPPRESSION.

The struggle for equal rights is not over and AAs are still fighting for it. What is changing in Nigeria? Is Nigeria better off than it was twenty years ago, in terms of civil rights and liberties. Nigeria was well past independence when Jim Crow was still a thing in the US.

At this point, ignorance is a choice, you can choose to remain stupid. And if you attended any university in the US why don’t you check when black people were allowed to attend them. Or you really think you look any different?

Your problem is that you have been oppressed for so long in Nigeria such that you think less systematic oppression = no systematic oppression. Do people even have or know basic human rights in Nigeria? Can you even speak to a government official in Nigeria the way the Nigerian ambassador spoke to Chinese officials in communist China, without any consequences? You lot even despise and frustrate people who make the effort to fight for decent rights in Nigeria

Please, that flea does not represent many of us. I’m sure if there was a dislike option we might have got a more representative opinion poll.

The reason nigerians even have somewhere to run to, like the US, is because of the sweat and blood of AAs who fought for their basic human rights, which is still elusive in Nigeria and nobody is even fighting for it. We cannot all run away, honestly, many are and have given up and leaving - at least they have where to run to. I still haven’t seen the reason for chest beating anywhere. Nigeria is just a pathetic nation on all fronts, a disappointment is a gross understatement cry such that even the president of Nigeria runs away to these other countries at the slightest discomfort.

The guy is ignorant and his parents never told him why they also ran away.

safarigirl:

Why will they be educated? Do you know how much college is? You think it Is the cheap education you get in Nigeria that they get there? Do you know how debt profiles are set up? Do you know some people are still paying off generational debt?

Did you ask how centuries of abuse may have affected them and their outlook in life? Did you wonder that maybe they were set up to fail from the start, by virtue of their race?

Who told you all the white people are rich? Their wealth is their race. Bring a poor white man and a poor black man, and the poor white man will get preferential treatment. Do you know why? Or you think it is because black Americans are lazy?

It is very clear that most Africans are ignorant and refuse to be educated.
