Doesn't matter, she isn't the only one with more than one master's degree and VOs won't deny anyone solely on the choice of degree, besides it's funded and she has travel history that shows repeatedly that she isn't likely to have any immigrant intent. As she says she hasen't violated any visas prior. Time2win: |
These shouldn't be that much of an issue, maybe the transcripts would reveal more. Your uncle works for the UN, was he the host with the emergency and could it be that the dates you stated he was having the emergency he was actually somewhere else which they found on the internet. Did your uncle ever violate his visa before changing status? *I'm aware these could well be baseless conjectures but what do you really think is likely to be the reason for your series of denials? If you could post a transcript of the event at the PoE the time you were turned back it will also help. **Oh and did you use the hospital and not pay for it, like had any recourse to public funds (benefits, tax credits, government assistance etc) whatsoever during your stay in the US because this for sure leads to straight denials Edit: Host was a female. So apparently, you said you were going for a conference and you stayed for up to five months (as long as your visa was valid, not much of a problem) but what kind of emergency? Did you go help babysit a newborn or work as an au pair and told them it was an emergency? Your case is hard to wrap my head around but four denials in a year indicates something is up which I think has nothing to do your course or uni and I'm inclined to think little to do with your interview performance ... and you still have a valid B visa ontop. Likely suspects: - Misrepresentation. - Had recourse to public funds ... And perhaps didn't admit (misrepresentation) MyCaseIsDiffere: |
Why were you denied four times, sure you haven't been blacklisted? Were the denials all in the same country? Why did you stay for up to five months on a visit visa as opposed to what you told was your reason? You should get a visa with funding from Harvard but with a backdrop of the aforementioned, VOs won't send even if it's the POTUS that invites you. We've read a padded fully funded offer get bounced because of spousal history and precedent. Anyway, you should share the past transcripts as well as you remember make people wey sabi help. All the best!!! MyCaseIsDiffere: |

Questioned Obasanjo's system only after realising OBJ was unrelenting towards a third term which by the way, was going to affect his 2007 presidential ambition. Excessive borrowing, nepotism, selective 'justice', gross incompetence and clueless administration didn't begin when Atiku moved to PDP, he was with 'them' for over 3 years and he kept mum the whole time, not even close to Sanusi or El-Eufai who sometimes raise some of thes issues with curteous verbiage either out of respect for Buhari or loyalty to the APC. You only need to go back to Atiku's recent response to FFK about RUGA to know the kind of person he is. WTH does he mean by he takes the stance of the PDP? Are all members of the PDP united against RUGA? Atiku is a man with no conviction except that of his personal interest which for decades now has been to become president of Nigeria. He 'speaks for justice' when it serves his presidential ambition. So talk wetin we no know. Next level just started. Kylekent59: |
@sherlock5577 Congrats bro, you deserve it ![]() |
Everybody knows but the problem with people like Atiku is that he wouldn't have said a thing about this if he was still in APC. Now is 'General Buhari' Kontinu |

Perhaps you're unaware that you're responding to one of the mindless imbecïles that campaigned and most likely rigged in that failed senile bigot of a president. Despite not being fulani because he or his kinsmen hasn't been slaughtered yet. wifeesnatcher: |
Better then. But if you can try to retake, it would greatly improve your chances even for spring as there's still time. Take TOEFL asap and try to get a great speaking score. ![]() Tamison: |
Fall '20? What are you applying for? If you have the funds, give the GRE another shot. There's still time and I believe you will do much better. Tamison: |
He actually came to beg the senate president, which you happened to be in the office at the time ![]() |
Reads more like you want to meet up with your uncle than attend school. @ the bolded, what did your google search result show? Keep discarding great advice like your previous comment and watch yourself frequently donate 60k+ to the US embassy. Undergrad? How old are you, have you taken SAT and $10k? MOwasola58: |
I see what you did there ![]() AgreatMan: |
Don't worry, you'll be fine. I wouldn't worry about choosing a program just yet. You have options with your GPA either going towards your work experience, your bachelor's, something in-between or even something entirely different. Read the thread, and start making preparations for GRE (wouldn't know about GMAT, but it's for you to find out whether it is what is required and prepare) and also TOEFL -- many top universities need good speaking scores for their Teaching Assistants. Don't know about Business Analytics as I'm into the sciences but I'm certain that there will always be opportunities to practice whatever you studied in the US and I believe there you would find more reasons to love it, if you never really liked it before. Your GPA indicates you can actually pass courses that you don't really like like that. Besides, we're not white people, if not how many of us attended our Nigerian universities out of 'passion' for the subject ? ![]() So start that slow grind and remember to pay your tithe from that $25k that you won't spend to the house next summer after you've got your funding and visa. Rule of Thumb: --- R1>R2>>R3 universities for available funds --- Bigger department, more students accepted, could translate to greater chance of acceptance --- Pay attention to GradCafe on international student profile and acceptance rates (not so reliable, but you'd get an idea) --- Hedge your applications to avoid 'tori dat touch' ie. Spread applications between top 10-20, top 20-50, top 50-100 etc according to thy pocket. All the best!! segunbolawole: |
@segunbolawole Securing fellowships (funding) is process and not for the faintest of hearts. You've got to be dogged and resilient and also be ready to put some money toward your efforts as well (not by paying agents o). When it ends in praise, nobody cares about the struggle. This should help: First thing first, get mentally and physically prepared for the process because it is not cheap and requires a great deal of effort. Applications cost money, even more is the entire process. It would also be in good stead to evaluate your chances of getting a US visa for study if your program isn't going to be funded. |
Your GPA is good. I'd advise you take some time and reflect on the program you'd like to do in the US, either related to your work experience or your bachelor's and evaluate which gives you a better chance of being fully funded. While you're at it, go through this thread: https://www.nairaland.com/1832477/how-achieve-high-scores-gre/200 Start from 200, keep reading in your spare time. Read everything. You'll certainly find some life/career-changing stuff and strategies to help you secure funded admission offers for fall 2020 and you and your Keep your head up, the VO helped you with some extra motivation ![]() Good luck and let the force be with you segunbolawole: |
Apologies, but it seems you are naive about modus operandi of con artists and the con game. Stop justifying BS. No one asked him to contribute to this thread. Matter of fact, most of the relevant stuff written on part 14 and 15 of this thread are recycled information freely given and freely recieved by selfless people, some still present here to this day. If his posts have been of help to you, fine but NEWSFLASH: He probably read it here anyway, like many of the newtimers. Or how many visa interviews has he gone for or organized or is he married to a VO? How someone who opened an account in 2019, barely 2 months ago asking if he could present T-bills at the embassy as SoA, and looking for legit hustle to travel instantly becomes a consultant luring people into PMs to charge them, for what?. Same fellow even went on to the GRE thread to advertise himself. Is it really that hard to spot a poser? I know it's your opinion but this one dey vex me la ![]() dreambound: |

Congratulions! So happy for you. Now let's go to america Mikkyboy: |
abike12:Christmas holidays for students don't last that long. She should've returned earlier perhaps stated she's on a gap year and say something more convincing. And pushing documents to the VO when not asked, shows desperation - it shouldn't apply to her with her history and age but the VO could've been having a bad day - next time she should ask the VO first "I have documents showing the birth of my niece, if you may like to see them" I think the VO wasn't convinced she is a bonafide student, he thought she was more interested in connecting with you over there than going to school. |
Wasn't adequately/sufficiently prepared ... I was unable to put forward a strong case ... Semantics. Emphasis on 'it's my fault not the VO' even when we know that VO sometimes is on a short fuse. How it is said too matters (to which extent, I wouldn't know...most of what I'm saying is just general interview tips) Personally, I think anyone that doesn't fill the DS form themselves is not serious at all. How can a prospective graduate student pay an agent to fill information about themselves? And this may be apparent to the VO but not the applicant and the others waiting in line. So what the VO sees is different; what the next person in line observes is "everybody before me got coloured paper, even people with funding". You never really know those on interview day who did or did not fill their DS-160 form or whatever themselves, or accurately so there are rarely any near identical profiles. The interview is just one part, the form goes way before you appear for the interview and I believe many denials are predetermined and the interview is just formality, except the person convinces otherwise. Nobody should tell anyone what to say in the real sense, a lot of what is on here should serve as guidance. The applicant should know best why they want to go to the US and present their case as best they can and prove home ties because it is a non-immigrant visa. A case in point here was a person who because he reads many cases here of people applying to more than two universities, misrepresented himself by claiming he applied to other schools when the truth was he applied to just one, and as fate would have it, mentioned that Columbia didn't require standardized exams from him. Imagine standing in front of the VO who has the internet and a computer to verify such outlandish statements. Dude didn't even consider that the interviewer could be an alumnus of the program and university the person is lying about. Or maybe have interviewed a number of students going for that same program at the university. If you applied to one school only, then convince the VO why you applied to only one school. There are numerous reasons why and if you really want to apply to more than one school, would it be because of the visa interview or because you actually want to study at those other schools? A lot of people can stand liars, but the ones they despise the most are the ones who lie directly at their faces. Lying is misrepresentation and only makes things more complicated and the visa more elusive. Pefuele: |

Pointless to you, but not for many others. Everyone's dealt a hand and not too many have that many options. She isn't the first, neither would she be the last but mind that even with the transcript, we don't have all the information. Sometimes, the transcript reads better than what transpired in reality. Communication isn't merely words spoken. Different nationalities, different SOP. My brother didn't get a B visa to present their project that won a competition with his school mates, upon travel history and all expense paid and sponsored by a company in the US. I'm sure his coleagues got visas, just not him, the Nigerian (although he didn't prepare like a Nigerian ). There's always room for improvement because if she shelves it, who stands to lose, the VO or the applicant? It wasn't like this a decade or two ago, well, just like almost everything else. Things change and are expected to, either for better or for worse and with Nigeria(n) things, we all know what to expect Let's just make the best out of the situation and not be discouraged. Na condition make crayfish bend. Thegamingorca: |
It depends on what she wants, if she really wants education in the US, by all means she should go for it. It's ridiculous in my book for anyone to change their aspirations merely because of a VO that didn't even give up to 5 minutes of his time. Also, it's one thing complaining and blaming all failures on the cesspit of a system we have in Nigeria with our peers and on nairaland. For the most part, it's true but taking the blaming to any interview is silly and would only lead to a certain outcome. Interviews are about fronting and making oneself look better than they really are and at the same time not coming off as being 'too great for your own skin' ** By the way, discrimination isn't a northerners' thing, it's a Nigerian thing practiced by individuals of all major ethnic groups in the country, including religious groups. Wouldn't know about the minorities because they've rarely been given a chance but I wouldn't raise my hopes. Thegamingorca: |
Deefav:Show that you accept responsibility for your shortcomings, even though many times the decisions are largely subjective. When asked say: "I am better prepared to present my case as I was unconvincing the last time" (Yes, take the blame like Akon and don't say it's the VO who didn't give you a chance) In my opinion , you didn't own up with your response about admission into a university in Nigeria. You should've been upfront saying "I was slightly below the cut-off for admission and didn't qualify for an admission ..." Saying quotas, although true, appears to absolve yourself from your responsibility in the outcome. Don't blame JAMB or the system or anyone at interviews. At interviews, you turn negatives to positives in interviews, so to follow up a response like that above, say something like: "... so it made me doubly determined to secure a scholarship at a much better and equipped university in the US" (which you did btw) You should anticipate such questions when there are gaps in education and employment history. A typical question is "What have you been doing since xxxx?" Also, let what you say be consistent with what was filled on the DS form. I noticed after submitting, you no longer have access to the information on the form, so print the review before submitting and practice answers for specific questions. There are general questions and there are specific questions tailored to each individual according to your profile. Use yours to raise questions and provide answers that you'll be confident about. For example, if you responded on the form that you have family or relative in the US, anticipate questions such as: "how long have they been in US?"... etc for something like this you shoud have at least 5 possible questions It's never easy being on the spot but the good thing is that the more you practice the more confident you become. Best of luck with your next interview ![]() |
So they had his new passport all along The level of incompetence and propensity to make things difficult for the next person in the average Nigerian is very discouraging. And the worst set of them all are clustered in the Nigerian Civil Service. Thank God he's British. He has immunity We need more Nigerians by origin to follow his lead. Maybe when they smash the ogas head, they will have sense. Carried their useless lackadaisical attitude to work to civilized spaces ![]() |
A big shout out to Lagosismyhome, Fairheart and the rest of the guys that are dedicated to this thread. Visa approved. Abuja Me: Good morning! VO: Good morning, your passport and I-20 (passed it) VO: Have you ever traveled out of the country? Me: Yes VO: Which countries? Me: A few countries in Europe and Africa (didn't say this. I just named them) VO: Are you married? Me: No VO: What do you want to do with the degree? Me: I intend to use the specialised skills that I'd acquire in organic synthesis to explore local plants with pharmaceutical (nodding) and cosmetic potential here in Nigeria where it is in abundance. (not as fluent as written but she got the point) I also wo.. (interrupts and passes white paper and explained when I'd get my passport back) ** I must admit, reading through this thread made me take my whole life's documents along. Birth certificate, bank statements, sponsor's letter of consent, waec, neco, nysc, association membership card, nepa bill, police clearance, estate levy etc except my GTB receipt. Well, better over-prepared than not at all.Travel history and funding might have played a role for me but one thing I understood well and is the essence of the interview is that it is a non-immigrant visa application and everyone is presumed an immigrant until one proves otherwise at the interview. The DS-160 form is the other part, very important. I prepared by anticipating a lot of questions that may arise from my submitted DS form, information on I-20, and my program...under the theme of "PROVE NON-IMMIGRANT INTENT" as the VOs on suspiscion of immigrant intent are by law, bound to reject such application. Good luck to other hopefuls and those on AP. It would be good practice to use an inverted pyramid approach in answering questions, sort of the style they use in writing newspapers where the all you need to know in an article is in the first paragraph. The interview is short, barely over 5 minutes and everyone gets interrupted at some point. so better to eliminate all the wordiness and go straight to the point. To the pith and core of the matter. Good luck again. See you in Stockholm at this year's Nobel's. |
Dude, you really believe in creationism With the wealth of information available? The vacuum you talk about is depicted in your essay, and sadly it is a vacuum of knowledge. As DeGrasse Tyson says, 'God' is the ever receding pocket of scientific ignorance." That is to say the more ignorant you are of the nature and working of things (universe, plants, animals, insects, advanced soceities etc) the bigger your god. Ponder on this for a moment, and let it challenge you to seek knowledge, at least to know an alternate explanation for the universe if by some slim chance your 'God' happened not to create anything. One doesn't need to know all the science but only read and learn from professionals who've devoted their lives to studying nature, the universe ... whatever Again, "The gods people worship look like them and desires what they desire" Any wonder why the Nigerian god grants visas and loooves money, fraud and fraudsters? The almighty God of the chimps wouldn't be a dog, would it? Even if it was, it would surely crack nuts with their bum ![]() Again, Twoods is right in his description of Christianity and its God. You only need to read the 4 gospels to know the kind of man/God Jesus was and contrast that with the charade of pentecostalism and its 'america wonder' Jesus in Nigeria. It's very easy to tell those who have actually read the bible in context. This thread is for aspiring intellectuals but it is underwhelming disappointing the way it's all about God. People can't post useful information before fantasising about their cherished beliefs. Don't you guys even in the least reason that there are even more people getting US visas that don't believe in what you believe? Religion and gods should be personal, whatever rocks your boat, but don't come here asking people to fast and pray for a visa when Leah Sharibu and others have been in captivity since forever and Nigeria tops countries with highest persecution of christians. Seriously, what are the priorities of this Nigerian visa god? Pray, fast, sacrifice a goat, whatever but let's leave those for our churches, and shrines. I've observed that the Muslim God isn't mentioned much here, maybe he isn't in charge of visas ![]() orimahspence: |
You can go without the receipt. It isn't collected, neither is it used for anything. The fact that you have a printed appointment confirmation and a DS-160 confirmation indicates you used a valid means of payment. Go with it if you can, if not, don't sweat it Tohajan: |
