You're quoting the wrong person. This should be directed to whoever is talking about top schools and success. Think that discussion had passed.
All I'm saying is it's a privilege to be here among legends, self-acclaimed and otherwise.

Cheers to you too wink

dabaniru:

So much hate in one post. SMH.

How you guys manage to twist people's opinions because they differ from your reality amazes me.

Are there facts in what he says? Most certainly. Has he said top schools are the 'only' way to succeed? Well, I am yet to read that. Saying top schools are not important is akin to saying getting good grades are not important - cos we all know "no be everybody wey go school go make am". I'd advise you all to be a little less touchy/offended about the "top school" matter and instead just pass your important message that it's not all about the school you attend (all without crucifying the man for stating obvious facts).

Cheers!

One doesn't have to be clairvoyant to spot a poser. And Yes, I know as he's written here severally. He's the top b school MBA who got an emergency F1 visa, recruited on campus to become MD of JP Morgan Chase, that also operates in the IT sector with Sergey Brin. Did you not know that he wrote the reference letter for the Akosua somebody. I forgot to mention he also wrote the source codes for nairaland and has alternate accounts to like and support his comments. grin

Can we stop all this shading. Do you know his background? We can always have positive criticism without attacking often.

Go to their office, mails (email) rarely elicits response in Nigerian government agencies.

Thanks for the response.

Will do that ASAP.

I have sent them mail but am considering going to their office in Nigeria.

'Searching for greener pastures' means going to violate Visas and do fraud in Nigerian parlance. I would've said don't bother yourself because China is just another kettle when it comes to human rights for criminals and we should be happy justice is served for his victim(s).
Tough luck, but if he did the crime, he should do the time (that's if it's only time he'll do in China).

Anyway, see if you can contact the Chinese embassy in Nigeria, and the Nigerian Embassy in China and be upfront with what exactly he was up to there in the far east. You can take it up from there.

People like your brother continue to make things difficult for legitimate Nigerians trying to earn a honest living and bring value to Nigeria in these countries angry

How somebody who was supposedly recruited from his village and given an emergency visa by a 'top 10 b school' would be having conversations with himself with different monikers, patting himself on the back for giving 'top quality advice' is really something for tv cheesy
Didn't know genius senior management MBAs of JP Morgan or is it Morgan Chase had so much time on their hands or perhaps they have to be borderline crazy and miserable to get recruited 'on campus' for the position.

She notified me by mail on Thursday that she had secured 2 years GRA offer for me regardless of the outcome the fellowship offer I was nominated and applied for 8 weeks ago. The offer is in addition to School of Engineering scholarship I was awarded 5 weeks back.

I greatly appreciate the effort of everyone on this thread. Full funding mail will continue to flow in for all.

Yes, or even a school essay. I think he's asking to see a technical work from you to see how you write and reason from your experience probably stated on your SOP or something.

First, make your project report neat. Run it on the net for plagiarism, if you haven't and edit until <20%. Make sure your citations are clean too. Then, review your arguments/explanations from your experiments and also your conclusion.

Or you could produce a 1-2 page summary of your project, cited and referenced properly. I would suggest you do this instead because dissertations are voluminous a lot of times, and you should want to save him the stress going through chapters of methods etc and literature review. Some of my applications asked for such.

Your email should also inform him about what you are sending.
4gunners:
Thanks for taking your time to reply. Do you think my final year project thesis will suffice as a technical paper? I've not written nor published any journal.

Very positive development, I think you're being evaluated for critical thinking and ability to pose research questions. Perhaps, someone else with more research exp in also being considered. Anyway, whatever you decide to send, make sure the plagiarized content is at the barest minimum.

For the paper you will read, you might want to identify gaps and talk about possible options to test and explore those ideas you found. You should thoroughly understand the paper.

You're in already so good luck and congratulations in advance.

Hello scholars!!! After waiting endlessly for the update on my PHd application to UA- Fayetteville. I sent an enquiry mail to the grad co-ord Civil dept. He replied that I've been granted admission and will be officially notified very soon. However, they're still searching for funding for me. No one has decided to fund me yet.

This morning, I received a mail from a prof in the dep. who I I sent mail to several months ago on the possibility of securing RA with him. The mail reads: "

Are you still looking for a place for graduate school? Have you published any papers, conference or journal articles? If so, I would be interested in reading them. If not, do you have any technical writing you could share with me? Perhaps something on the brachiopod shell research.

I have attached a paper of mine. Would you mind reading it and giving me your thoughts? I would be interested to know what questions you have after reading it. Either about our methods or future work you think it promotes.

Thank you,

I need your advice on the best way to go, as I do not want to take a wrong step. Pls, I know the mail is not vague but still, I need input from "elders"

AspiringPHD:
Hello,

Please, I need your advice. I have taken GRE twice;

First Attempt (V: 147, Q: 145, A: 3.5)

Second Attempt (V: 151, Q: 146, A: 4.0)

What's the interval between the two exams? On the bright side you improved, indicating that you can keep improving for a much better competitive score. If you're willing to give it another try, send a message and I can help with some of the current editions of GRE prep material ebooks.

For techniques towards improvement, endeavour to keep a log of question types you struggle with and practice more on improving on those areas. Also, don't register for the test before preparing so you don't add more pressure on yourself.

I am greatly discouraged because these scores are not competitive enough. My CGPA is not that amazing either, 3.69/5. I am interested in Msc programs in Cell biology, Anatomy, basically programs in the biomedical sciences field. But from all indication, my profile does not look competitive enough.
I'm also a borderline 2:1 so I understand how i
uphill it might seem holding up against competition. Since you cannot change your GPA, focus on what you can do to improve your profile like acing the GRE, and getting strong recommendations and SOP. You might want to consider taking the subject GRE if possible

I have tried reaching out to Professors to at least get some level of assurance before spending money on applications, but the response has not bee encouraging in any way.
There's an art to contacting them, especially when nothing really stands out about your profile so if it's going to be generic, don't bother; well you could always try, but you would most likely be ignored. Quoran has a number of posts about this.

The biomedical science field seems really competitive, at least for my profile, and I am considering looking at programs in Biomechanics and Kinesiology as well.
I doubt there's any program with funding that isn't very competitive and increasing in the no. of applicants. Let it serve as your motivation and take solace in the fact the STEM fields are less competitive than non-STEM ones. There's always that chance for you to get in.

It is worthy of note that, I can't afford a graduate degree without some sort of funding, so the funding part is important.
What would you advice? That I spend the money I have with me now on taking the GRE again (it's heartbreaking) or submit applications for Spring and see how it goes?
Prepare to take the GRE again and see how it goes, aim for fall '20 as well, in-between take up roles like teaching, research, conference etc anything that would improve your profile and application

The only thing I consider as an advantage is the publication of my undergraduate research in an unpopular India journal.
Don't we all feel inadequate? You'd be surprised how many elite scientists feel the same. Even our brother here with 8 publications and top 1% GPA was quite unsure about his prospects. grin So don't worry, it's normal. Let this your achievement be emphasised in your SOP as this actually indicates you are capable of doing research, essentially what admissions look for in a candidate.

Also If you have any suggestion on schools that wouldn't mind a profile like mine, I am greatly open to suggestions.
It is my first post, and I hope it will get some insightful response.

Please help a confused mind
Don't know about schools but you might want to start looking at Gradcafe for funding info with your GPA range in addition to suggestions you would get here.

You'll be fine, you are in a good place for insights. Best of luck in your endeavour and welcome.
