Education / Re: How To Achieve High Scores On The GRE by CptCharlesVane: 5:05pm On Feb 26, 2019 |
Hey Guys! I applied to 6 unis in total for PhDs. All apps sent in and completed before Christmas '18. Chemistry (Accepted; Science scholar $30k (stipend + GA) no tuition ) UMinnesota - Medicinal Chemistry (Rejected) UIowa - Medicinal and Natural Product Chemistry (awaiting) Texas Tech Health Sciences Center - Pharmaceutical Science (Accepted) Virginia Commonwealth Uni - Pharmaceutical Science/Med Chem (awaiting) Washington State Uni - Chemistry (Rejected) Acceptance mail came on Friday but somehow I missed it. Stumbled on it yesterday, and Voila! a pleasant surprise, especially after seeing the demoralizing result updates of the elections and realisation of the trajectory of the future of Nigeria, on the way to electing a senile, insensitive, barely literate cattle herder with a dubious WAEC qualification that has no regard for the law or court orders. I want a better Nigeria, and that's not being selfish, and this election was an opportunity for the people to have made a statement but what do we have? Anyway, I'm almost certain I'll be in the US this fall, haven't really decided yet, as I hope to get at least another offer, but doing Chemistry in the heart of the big apple is a fascinating prospect that I fancy, pretty much why I applied. I didn't contact any faculty member by the way, I however corresponded with the program officer/coordinator especially since my GRE quants was below the required 50th percentile and he advised I should still apply. My GRE Chemistry was also abysmal percentile-wise, although I got a little over 50% of the questions correct. I would say praise god or whatever if I believed in any of that. But it can't be only god and prayers that produce desirable results, however, I would still say I was quite fortunate this time. Being my third application cycle, first two were focused mainly at European universities. Serendipity, providence or whatever the nomenclature caused me to stumble upon this thread and blessed be the day that I read experiences of people here with funded offers, thus rekindling my aspiration for a PhD scholarship and directing my energy where the money is, the US. Good fortunes to the fall '17 and '18 set who left their experiences here that are still of tremendous benefit to all and sundry, High Star for una! Thanks to everyone who responded to my posts and inquiries and also those who aspire for an education by taking the GRE. You never know who you may inspire to dream again and go for opportunities for a better life. Keep contributing! Blessed be the ones that have contributed and still do here. Y'all should be President of Nigeria. TL;DR Got a funded admission offer, the first after 2 rejections. 20 Likes 1 Share |

Can't you see how silly you sound? is it even up to a year since the pant nonsense started? why do I have to wait for 3 years for mine? Just look for the person that got money through pants get the details then we can go public with it. Just because your life is ruled by fear of the unknown and superstitions doesn't make you any knowledgeable. Oga people are making plans to live in mars through math and science and you are here talking and ready to stake your existence on crap. Education is supposed to enlighten you not to think that rain and thunder are caused by your village people or gods but look at you using 4G internet and a smartphone/computer defending rubbish. Don't be a disgrace to your education. First study how your smartphone works first, if you are able to understand it, then move and to other things like aeroplanes, then finally google how money is manufactured and where it comes from, and why countries are in debt or take loans when they have hundreds of millions of fresh pants I hope you see how silly this is getting? I would be ashamed and wary of you if you were my sibling because like I said you are no different from those guys, except that you don't lack food and money for luxury like internet. If you still want your doubts to be cleared. Take me up and we will stake everything, so it hurts when your superstitious beliefs fail you like it always had. It isn't limited to you by the way, if you are too afraid. Privettoall: |

Will I be surprised if you cannot see that it's thoughts like these that fuel and keep these barbaric actions to continue happening? No! If you can type on a smartphone that is very sophisticated believes pants bring money then you are no different from those guys, save that you're privileged and have food to eat and money in your pocket. By the way, come and take my underwear and give to the gods that provide money in the poverty capital of the world. For a bet, I've got cameras we'll record the whole process and post it on the internet. Privettoall: 1 Like |

There's no better way to fight corruption than improving the extant laws and adhering strictly to them. If someone decides, based on 'morality' to tackle corruption cases by violating the constitution and process it sets a precedence. But where does this unconstitutionality end? Admittedly it may be popular and right, for instance the morally popular punishment for armed robbers is instant execution by burning tires but the law gives the robbers room for fair hearing and a completely different sort of punishment or worst case the robber might be set free depends on the argument of his case. Buhari's disregard for the constitution and legal process is no different from Nigerian soldiers disdain for laws of the land. That's why it is only in Nigeria soldiers do whatsoever they like to citizens and go scot free. The executive arm of government and soldiers have always lived above the law, except you don't live in Nigeria. In fact, the top executives have immunity and unaccountable funds called security votes. Buhari himself was faced with a moral crisis to resign or not run for office since he 'forgot' or 'made a mistake' with his WAEC certificate, making him unqualified for the position, but what did he do? rather than do the moral and right thing he employed scores of SANs to use 'technicalities' to explain away and justify his missing certificate. So, it not about what the CJN did, there is a process for his prosecution. It is about what and where the next person especially governors who are minigods would take unconstitutional means to do whatever they like since Baba has shown the world that the constitution is not important and court orders don't mean anything. There is a reason why the world vehemently rejects military governments, not because they are incapable of any good or morality. If one doesn't like the laws or constitution, review and change it. That too, there is a process for it. don4real18: |

Yes! almost like the governors and president that cannot be tried under law because of immunity. If you want better, ask for the laws to be reviewed and changed. Prosecutions in Law isn't really about morality ala 'the right thing' it is rather about what can be proved in court. So, if they keep finding new funds that's good for the spectacle of bloggers and amebos although good evidence when presented in court. Currently, he is still presumed innocent until proven guilty from a fair hearing in a court of law. The 'right thing' Buhari should have done was to resign or better not contest an election since he never met the WAEC requirement but did he? He rather went to court for them to prove that he didn't have the certificate because he understands this. He is the primary beneficiary of 'technicalities' in law he talked about. Resignation always at the discretion of the resigner. Fuckuignos: |

Perhaps, my reply wasn't good enough for you. No one here, except they work for the admissions committee in the universities you want to apply to, can categorically tell with certainty your chances of being funded or if you should apply with your current score. The graduate admissions officer is better informed about the weight they use for the GRE and have knowledge of the profiles of their admitted candidates for several years but continue, remain here and wait for gurus to advise you on what to do while you run out of time and options. This is one of my last posts on here, as I notice people only ask questions and don't even acknowledge people who respond to them. Good luck everyone. Best to mind my business. Please what do I do? Do i go ahead and apply to non top schools for a PhD program in Mechanical Engineering for fall 2019? What are my chances of being funded? or do i just write the GRE again? 1 Like |

- Contact the graduate program administrator and In your case, ask if your GRE score is within range for funding or ask if you can still go ahead to apply. Ensure to be forthcoming with your detailed profile in the email. As they say, 'if you want someone to help you, make it easy for the person' rozay111: 1 Like |

TV/Movies / Re: LionHeart: Ugezu J Ugezi Reacts To Reviews Of Genevieve Nnaji‘s Movie by CptCharlesVane: 12:35pm On Jan 15, 2019 |
Movie reviews are subjective so what's the fuss all about? A lot of igbo people always see everything through ethnic lenses and always squeal as victims. I'm sure Genevieve wouldn't see every review as hating like this director or whoever he is. She is far too sophisticated for that, I hope. I haven't seen the movie but for Netflix to pay +$3m to someone in and from Nigeria is very inspiring. Let's stick with the positives. Having completed my NYSC in the east, I would say a culture that discriminates against their kin and brands them as 'osu' has no moral ground to call out others for preferring their own (which they largely don't). Imagine the popular saying in Imo state 'if you had to dine with a snake or an Mbaise person, you should choose the snake.' Imo state sacked all non-imo ibos from their civil service, likewise Abia state. Now isnt it ironic that one of the most intolerant ethnic groups in the country are the ones that squeal as victims of discrimination the most while at the same time being the overwhelming beneficiaries of other ethnic groups' hospitality. Ibos are accommodated all around the country, plus they would rather migrate than remain in their extoled homelands, yet they don't and can't even live with one another and become suspicious of everybody. 7 Likes 2 Shares |

First thing first, get mentally and physically prepared for the process because it is not cheap and requires a great deal of effort. Applications cost money, even more is the entire process. It would also be in good stead to evaluate your chances of getting a US visa for study if your program isn't going to be funded. Let's get with it: 1. It's never too early to begin preparations. Start several months before the start of an application cycle. - Take standardised tests very early as many people do not achieve reasonable scores on first attempt. - Contact your referees about your intention for their support - Process your transcript evaluations, if necessary, asap. *Perhaps the most tedious, and expensive process of it all. 2. Look up programs and universities of interest. My people say: 'who stop ask question no dey miss road.' - Contact the graduate program administrator and be upfront with your credentials asking whether your profile is competitive for funding for international applicants. It may be on the website, but still *you'd likely get insider info about retaking standardised tests or not - Proceed to contact researchers of interest, before paying that application fee and sending in your application. 3. The more the number of strategic applications, the higher the chances of an admission with perks. Bon Chance ! fatsonm: 3 Likes |

Politics / Re: Not Fighting Corruption Is More Dangerous, Kagame Tell Okonjo Iweala. by CptCharlesVane: 7:52am On Jan 10, 2019 |
The fight for freedom has always been dangerous. Hate it or love it, the bravest Nigerians today are the IPOB believers. I'd always remember the video where Nnamdi Kanu and his followers marched ahead, with him defiantly in front, even when faced with squads of armed police and soldiers with orders to stop them. They were unarmed but they marched on ready to die for what they believe in. If anyone knows anything about freedoms fought for and achieved, whether the civil rights movement or the apartheid regime, it was on the blood of numerous people. Even the dehumanised slaves had numerous bouts of insurrection for their freedom but it seems as long as the oppressors look like the oppressed, it becomes a thing of joy to be dehumanised and humiliated by the kinsmen. Many times, I think Nigeria got their independence too cheaply. The British were too civilised to let it go through negotiations they should have been more brutal so that the bloody cowards stealing the future of unborn Nigerians today would have understood from someone in their lineage who might have lost limbs, eyes gorged out or locked up for almost 3 decades to know implications of stealing funds meant for education and development and worse storing it in the land of the colonisers. I am a strong advocate for capital punishment for the corrupt in government, and this includes civil servants who extort people using all sorts of devious schemes, just like they have it in China. Until then, Nigeria cannot be salvaged. That way only strong willed people would still go ahead to steal government funds, not cowards who loot mindlessly and easily run away to countries where they enjoy freedoms paid for in blood by indigenes. Just imagine Nigeria in 20 years at this rate, considering greatly decreased demand in crude oil, population explosion - Lagos would have over 50million people (no trains, no power, pollution, no functional state healthcare system, state schools/universities etc) even worse in the other states; more people in poverty (by then world leaders by miles in excruciating poverty) more people out of school and undereducated in public school systems. Jesus! I can't even imagine. If you can read this and think about the future of your children in Nigeria and still vote a 80+ year old semi-literate senile man to decide that future or a known dubious customs officer who spends over 200m naira every election cycle without publicly raising funds, YOU ARE A BASTÅRD! take that to the polling unit. Not fighting corruption and the corrupt is way more dangerous 14 Likes 3 Shares |

For GRE: 1. Only use a few materials (Official GRE sources is a must) and be thorough with them 2. Take simulation practice tests only for evaluation of your weaknesses and speed and save the ETS official practice tests until when you feel ready for the real test. 3. Focus more on your weaknesses and work hard to improve them. Taking different practice tests without consciously working on problem types you missed won't help much or at all. 4. Keep a detailed journal and record your challenges and progress. Little victories will motivate you. 5. Get adequate rest before the main exam. The GRE is also a stamina test. 6. Endeavor to give back by posting here and this is a threat Good luck with everything. Spanishmario: 5 Likes |
