6 trunks represents 6 elephant.

6X2 is 12 eyes of elephant.

6X4 is 24 legs of elephant.

40-24(the elephants legs) is 16 legs.

Since snakes has no leg, therefore 16 legs represents 8 ostrich.

16/2 is 8...therefore 16 legs represents 8 ostrich.

8X2 is 16 eyes of ostrich, which is for the snakes.

50-16-12 equals 22 eyes.

22/2 equals 11 eyes each for the snakes.

marion g: 5 snakes. If there are 40 legs then elephant + ostrich = 20. However, we have 6 trunks which means there are 3 elephants and 17 ostriches. Since we have 50 eyes, it make the snake, elephant and ostrich combined= 25 (dividing it by 2)since they are in pairs.
Taking the 20 out of 25 we are left with five (number of snakes)

You're wrong...an elephant has one trunk and 2 tusk.

So the idea of 6 trunks for 3 elephants is totally out of the question.
